Convert Playable Sims to NPCs?
I know that it is possible to create NPC's--or at least to spawn them for a custom NH, but I am curious about what to do in a well-established NH if you'd like to add to the NPC pool. Is it possible to convert a playable sim into a townie using simpe? How would that be done, if it were possible? Sorry if this has been asked and answered. When I searched I really only saw info on townie/npc default replacements, which I don't want to do.

I've been wondering about the same thing too. I want to beautify the genepool in my legacy hood. And alike you could not find any info on replacing NPCs in an already established neighborhood. So, if anybody has the answer, I'd love to hear more.

You can use the sim blender to convert a playable to a townie/downtownie I believe.

I don't know about using SimPE to accomplish this, but I know Inge's teleporters at Simlogical include the function to change a playable into a townie, and the Simblender (at Simbology) might as well.

This method would increase the townie pool; it would not replace existing townies.

Thanks, I will check into this. For clarification, townie & npc are not synonymous--would I be able to hire these people as maids, butlers, etc? Or, only have them become the walkby folks? Either way, it's good to know.

A townie and an NPC are not synonymous no. If you want custom NPC's maids ect I believe you need to use the NPC gun that you spawn from the mailbox, just making them a townie with the SimBlender (this is what I use) or the gun will not work for. Might help for you to look at a tutorial on creating custom hoods because creating the NPC's and townies are part of that process.

You can make a playable into an NPC by doing this:
1. backup your neighborhood
2. Use InSim to Remove Sim From Family -> As NPC
3. Go into SimPE, open your neighborhood, go into Sim Browser. Find and open the sim.
4. Click the Other tab, and click "0x0000" next to "NPC Type". Look up a list of the NPC types (like this one and paste the type of NPC you want the Sim to be into that field.

Note that if you already have three of a kind of NPC in the "NPC pool", one of them won't be automatically spawned in-game.

Wow! Thank you sooo much for this info!

Edit:
OK,so I finally got up the nerve to try this--and I think I must have done something wrong. I looked up the code for butler (0X0045) and maid (0X0013), changed two townies that I had custom made, assigning them NPC codes, and I changed their family instance too (should I not have done that?) At any rate, they both showed up in SimPE under SimBrowser as NPC's after I made the changes, which seemed like a good thing. However, back in game, had playable family order up a butler and .... --l--a--g-- the game spawns a new one with a perfectly awful name: BJ Hollmo.(Ok, I know, I should have gotten that default name replacement I was thinking about!) Geez! Why, Maxis, why? The NH started out with NO Maxis NPCs at all--now I think I have on the order of ten-fifteen. All of which I am okay with--whatever--but I was really hoping on being able to have some storyline for my household servants. One odd coincidence: that BJ Hollmo guy looked quite a bit like my custom sim, with the same personality, I think. However, he did NOT retain any family relationships. And the maid--was just not the same dear little Abigail Foster I'd created. I got some fugly guy with a bowl cut hairdo and another really, really stupid name. Stupid Maxis.

Does anyone know where I went wrong with this?

Hi, I don't know if this ever got resolved or even looked into, but I've been looking for a way to do this for a long time now. I really hate to bump this up, but I'd really like to bring this to light.

I'd really like to make one of my Sims into The Grand High Witch of a neighborhood, but I can't seem to figure out how. Does this method work? Also, I have no idea what InSim is. Sorry, it's late and I may be a bit sleep deprived.

Does anyone have any ideas? Again, I'm sorry for bumping this, but I'd REALLY like to see it resolved.

InSim is a mod that is similar to the simblender, if you've heard of it. It exists in different versions, I use the object version which adds objects that can do pretty much everything boolprop does, but more user-friendly.

It's called InSimenator, and I recommend using the object version as it won't conflict with other mods.

Awesome, thank you! Believe it or not, I actually did think they were referring to InSimenator, my brain just wasn't sure and I couldn't find it as InSim.

Okay, I am off to find it and try this out! I will be sure to post what I find out

EDIT: So, none of that worked. I tried deleting the FAVi as well, but nothing. It did the same thing. It just made a new NPC. Anyone have any ideas?

Maybe something in the Creating a clean custom neighbourhood tutorial will help?

Hiya, I have made playables into townies a few times, this is what I do (never had any problems so far).

1. Create sims you want to be townies/decide which sims you want to be townies.
2. Move them out. Leave them in the family bin.
3. Go back to the household, press shift+control+c to bring up the cheat window.
4. Type in 'boolprop testingcheatsenabled true' (exactly as shown but without speech marks)
5. Shift+click on a sim and from the pie menu, select 'Spawn'
6. From the menu, select 'NPC and Townie maker'
7. A leafless tree will appear.
8. Click on the tree, select 'Make into townie'
9. Look for your sims that you want to be townies' name.
10. Select their name, you will get a message saying they are now a townie.
11. You can only do this for one sim at a time.
12. When you have finished, sell the tree, bring up the cheat window again, and type in 'boolprop testingcheatsenabled false'

Hope this helps! EDIT-Just saw the dates! lol! Never mind.

As for making them into NPC's, I'm not sure how to do that, I've never tried it.

I've done the same thing as Dizzy-Noodles and I believe there is an option to make NPC's as well. I made some University Professor's and they are working great in my game.

Note* You need Nightlife EP installed to Spawn the NPC and Townie Maker.

Hope this helps!

NPC and Townie Maker - if you have later EPs, it's a gun not a tree.

I no longer come over to MTS very often but if you would like to ask me a question then you can find me on tumblr or my own site tflc. TFLC has an archive of all my CC downloads.

I don't think your method works either. Each NPC sim has special tokens and behavior records inside their character files. (Good example are the nannies. They all have a special insane behavior) You can't add those records in SimPE. Doing so will just corrupt the sim and perhaps the neighborhood.

You will have to use this tutorial instead.

You don't have to create a new sim in the neighborhood for that.

Just extract the NPC sim to body shop and make him/her over and save your changes.
Then you can use Alt Sim Surgery to replace the NPC's appearance.

It might be that the older information was from a time when we were less aware of corruption etc.

I use the sims as a psychology simulator...

For something like this it's best to start a new thread not drag up an old one as it may contain bad information. A lot has been learnt about corruption in the last few years.

Okay, I'll try out this method instead. I'm glad I looked this thread before trying this out on one of my sims.

I see what everyone is saying, sorry for bumping this thread.
