Moving to the Help forum.

Did you create the SavedSims folder yourself, or did you let the game do it? If you save a sim yourself in CAS, it will automatically create a SavedSims folder and you can put your .sim files alongside the one created in there. Then the sims will show in CAS to be chosen - use the * icon in the top right in CAS to find only custom sims, and make sure you're looking at the right age/gender.

CAS = Create a Sim. Delete the folder you made, save a sim in CAS (click on their portrait picture at the bottom of the screen) so the game will make its own SavedSims folder, and put your downloaded .sim files in the newly-made SavedSims folder.

Make sure you're using that icon - you want it saved as a .sim, not a .sims3pack

Where are you looking? See here for instructions on finding the sim easily: Game Help:Sim Files Not Appearing#Check_Sim_Binwiki.

Mine is such a simple little question I'm piggy-backing on this post!

Some sites include both a .sim file and a .sims3pack file for a sim. Is there a preference for which one to use? I see that the .sim file doesn't have the thumbnails or additional content (if included in the .sims3pack) but, as it is a much smaller file size, is all of the information included in it that is in the .sims3pack file?

Since I've extracted most of my .sim3pack files, obviously I would prefer installing .sim files. Just curious about the differences...

Thx!

It's a matter of preference, really. I prefer .sim files: they're easier to install and uninstall, and they're smaller files.
Sims3packs don't require you to install any required CC separately - but I prefer using .sim files and installing the clothes, hair etc., separately despite the lack of convenience, because it means that if a sim comes with something I don't like or don't want, I can just not install it. If you install a sims3pack sim which comes with bad CC, you'll have to uninstall the sim to get rid of the CC.

What I lack in decorum, I make up for with an absence of tact.
