I think a lot of people have steam (if you play anything other than the sims that is). I have to say I only use it because I have to in order to launch the games I play.

I no longer come over to MTS very often but if you would like to ask me a question then you can find me on tumblr or my own site tflc. TFLC has an archive of all my CC downloads.
I'm here on tumblr and my site, tflc

I recently installed Steam on my laptop and bought, downloaded, and installed Age of Empires II: HD and Civilization V: Gold on my laptop and enjoy playing them. I was not sure if I would like them because my typical favorites are SimCity 4, the Sims 2, and the like but I have some experience with previous games in those series.

I do. I didn't know you could add people on there. What's the purpose of that?

I resisted using Steam for ages, but then I got this unfaltering urge to buy Oblivion GOTY and replay it, and I happened to see how dirt cheap the collection was on Steam. So I caved. I bought the Fallout 3 collection during the summer sale too (I only had the base game on DVD). FO3 plus all DLC for $4.99? Kind of hard not to buy it.

Doesn't everyone who uses a computer for gaming have Steam?

So you can compare your e-penises achievements.

But really, it's mostly used to make it easier to set up multiplayer matches with your friends, and such.

Yeah, I'm on Steam; I got on it earlier this year when my favorite strategy game franchise went Steam-only. Same name there.

I have steam yes. Installed it, because it has some games which others, like GoG, don't have, like vtm"b. Also, some games that i have, like blades of time, requires to have steam, cause it needs that to activate it. And some games are only distributed through steam, like torchlight II, although you can purchase that one also from runic themself. But there is no hardcopy like the first one.
Anyway, i use the same name as here.

Not everyone. Although the group is growing since more and more companies use steamworks as copy protection (skyrim for example) or only distribute through steam.
And no, it's not only for multiplayer. Steam is an online distributionplatform in the first place, but has also functions like chatting, make screenshots and videos and it counts how many hours you have played your games (limited to those which are purchased through steam or which needs to be activated through steam)
If your goal is to only set up MP matches, then you use teamspeak. Teamspeak is specially designed for those who play multiplayer games.
