I'm running out of room on my C drive (about 500MB left) , and I have 12GB free on my D drive, (aka I have a partitioned hard drive). I want to download more objects and such, but since my game is installed on C:/ I don't want to use up more space.

Is there any way to change the destination of my downloads folder, for use in the game, like can I move it to D:\ and somehow still be able to use my custom content in the game?

Sorry but I'm not extremely knowledgeable about this game, and what you can do and what you can't/

Are you using WindowsXP?
If so it's easy to move the whole My Documents folder. Just right click on the folder icon, select properties, and in the Target tab, change the path from C:\whatever\my documents to D:\my documents. It will probably ask you if you want to move the files to the new location; say yes.
