View Full Version : Stair building question, any thoughts ?

Can anyone tell me if its possible to get either of these sets of stairs in the game. I have a lot of hours in mainly the modular set and then I started wondering if it was even possible to add more tiles to a cloned object. I cloned one of the stairs so I know for sure I will need to add more tiles to it, just another thing I will have to track down and study up on. :)
The other set I have in mind a wrapped set for an outside deck. I will post a picture of the small bit I started and will be back with something taken in game pus some crappy artwork to give a better idea of what I am talking about on that set.
I just wanted an idea if the "minds that be" think they can be done before I waste any more hours on them.
Edit: Well I searched for a couple of hours last night and could not find any pictures of what I am talking about so I took a couple more screen shots and butchered them a bit, should give a better idea of the modular set.

the screenie on the very right are split level stairs. thats not a type-o-stairs to create but instead you would need to apply a certain building technique using modular stairs.
look around for tutorials about 'split level stairs'
with regards to the first 3 screenies I donno what you are up to...

Thanks chrissy6930, I know they are modular stairs and have used the tricks to build them many times but I am not fond of the problems you can run into in certain buildings/placements. That's why I wondered if they could be made, bought and placed as one object.
If these would work, you would not have the problem of having to use vertical or "no texture" siding for one thing.
To make it more simple, can an object be made to use 9 tiles as that's what this contraption would take :)
I guess I forgot a arrow on the first group and have no time to put up another right now, maybe later tonight. But in a nutshell if you see a square corner of a deck or anyplace in a house for that matter, you can place a set of steps on the each corner of it which leaves a one tile open which you can not place stairs on. I want to fill that corner with placeable modular steps, I am sure I can just build blocks to fill it but would like for them to be placeable and usable although it would probably require animation to make Sims use the corner, something for a much later day but at least they would look funtional and be ready if I can ever figure out the animation.

Duke,
there are examples of spiral stairs and things that have been made. However, all of them seem to have awkward animation of no animation at all (in the case of Targa's stairs, where the sims sort of 'teleport'). Taking that route will probably be the easiest. Namely making the object you described and giving it a teleport function, instead of custom animation (since that's close to impossible).
You *can* change the footprint of a stair (where the sim walks). Chrissy has some experience in that, i believe, but i actually doubt that changing the footprint will make them round a corner.

Thanks for the reply Lethe_s, Its not important that Sims use the modular steps however it is very much so that they use the split level set. I know thats possible as they are straight\turn\straight... to the top.

I have got some non-modular stairs that do a half-landing, at dinnerbell. They're not totally open underneath, but you're welcome to adjust their mesh if you think they might be any use.

Thank You Inge Jones, I went and grabbed the half landing set, I will take a look at it tomorrow most likely. I have sworn off doing more than just vegetating today after hours of working on a MESH yesterday only to have MilkShape crash before I saved anything. Guess that will teach me to save more often :)
My thoughts are to make 2 sets of the spiral stairs, one closed underneath and one open, that should be easy to do, but unless I run across a mirror feature somewhere I doubt I will do another set going up to the left. :)

On the same site is a alpha recolour that will make the underneath bit disappear, so if that's all you want you don't need to do anything else.
