Can't Buy Clothes

Hello,
Ever since I installed The Sims 2 (all expansions) on my laptop, I haven't been able to buy clothing. I select 'Buy' and the action goes into the queue but then immediately disappears. I've tried to buy clothes with every age and gender, but to no avail.

Did you do any of the steps in the game problems FAQ? Have you tested this without your downloads folder to eliminate custom content as the culprit? Could you please outline what steps you have taken so we don't suggest something you've already tried? Thank you :)
