I've been reading this story for awhile now, and I keep checking the forum just to see if it's been updated. The plot and plot twists are very captivating, and I love that Lorenzo and Michelle reunited before the baby was born, although I feel terrible for Claus. Hopefully he'll have better luck in the future - with a different girl of course?

Chapter 20: Crushed

I stayed at the hospital for two more weeks. They needed to take more tests and stuff like that. I also kind of got used to the thought of not having any more children. After all, we did have this perfect girl now, and I supposed I could live with just having her.

Lorenzo stayed with me most of the time in the hospital, and my family also came to visit me. None of them seemed mad at Lorenzo anymore, which made me glad. I did get the feel though that Jan hadn’t quite warmed up to him yet. I wondered why, but then I forgot about it. He would eventually come around.

To my surprise I found when we arrived at home, that Lorenzo had decorated the nursery. It was very sweet and it made me extremely happy. He really cared about both me and the baby.

The next few days were just perfect. Lorenzo and I were as much in love as ever, and he was happy to help taking care of the baby. We decided to name her Maja. Lorenzo had gone back to his former workplace, and he was happy there.

Claus called me a couple of days after I returned from the hospital. He didn’t sound well. He pleaded me to come see him, but I wouldn’t. Lorenzo wouldn’t like it, and I didn’t really want to go. “I still love you… so much! It kills me not to be with you. Lorenzo isn’t good enough for you! He’ll leave you again, I know it. But I won’t. I’ll always be by your side. Won’t you give me a second chance? Please! I’ll do anything. I just… I can’t live without you!” As he spoke those words, I slammed on the phone. I didn’t know what to tell him. I wanted to be with Lorenzo, not Claus.

I decided to give Claus a call back later that day. I didn’t want to be enemies with him – he was after all one of my closest friends. It took quite some time before he answered the phone. His voice was slow and blurred. “Michelle?” he mumbled. “Hi… yes, it’s me. Are you okay? I’m really sorry.” A few seconds passed. “I…” he began. I could hear he was crying. “Claus? Please answer me” I pleaded. “Sorry, Michelle… I gotta go now…” and then he hung up. I sat a few minutes just holding the phone in my hand.

Then Lorenzo came home from work – I was still holding the phone in my hand. “Hi, sweetie. Who’ve you been calling?” he asked me. “Eh… Anne” I lied.

I suppose he could tell that I was lying. “Anne?” he asked suspiciously. “Alright, it wasn’t Anne. It was Claus. I had to check if he was alright. He called me earlier and…” “Alright, wait a minute. You called Claus, the guy you almost married? Listen, if you want out of this relationship…” he began, but I interrupted him. “No! It’s nothing like that. You know I love you”. He didn’t use to be this jealous, nor so temperamental with me. I wondered where this was coming from all of a sudden. “Hmm, right… sure. Okay, if you say so” he said in a low voice. Then he went into the kitchen, grabbed a beer, and went into the living room to watch TV.

This wasn’t normal behaviour for him either – especially not the beer thing. I looked at him and wondered if I had to do something about it, but I figured that he was probably just still adapting to being a father, or something along those lines. My real concern was Claus. He had sounded awfully strange on the phone. I felt an urge to go see him… what if he was in really bad shape. But I knew that Lorenzo would not like that. Perhaps… perhaps I should bring him along? But then they’d probably start fighting again, and besides, who was going to take care of Maja while we were away?

I thought about the problem for a couple of hours.

“Lorenzo? I’m worried about Claus. He didn’t sound right on the phone”. I hoped he’d listen to reason and stop this jealousy act. “Oh, so you’re worried about him, are you? I bet you wish you’d married him instead of choosing to be with me, right? Just admit it!” he spat at me.

I was confused. I had never given him any reason to be jealous. Well, except for the fact that I almost married someone else. But I chose Lorenzo right the minute he came back; he must have been able to see that.

He sighed and seemed to compose himself. “Listen, Michelle, I’m sorry. I just had a really bad day. Look, if it will make you feel better, just call him back. I’m sure he’s alright. Go ahead.” I took his advice and tried calling Claus again. But this time there was no answer. I tried calling him again. And again. Nothing. “Lorenzo? I’m really worried now. He’s not answering the phone.” Lorenzo looked at me and in fact also seemed a little worried now. “Perhaps you should go over there. No, wait, strike that… I’ll go with you. Just in case something’s wrong. We’ll drop off Maja at your parents’ house on the way.”

And off we went.

There was light in his apartment, so I tried the doorbell. There was nothing to hear from inside the building. I went to peek through a window, and what met my eyes – Claus passed out on the floor in the middle of the living room!

I panicked and told Lorenzo to break through the door.

He succeeded in the third try, and I ran as fast as I could inside and over to Claus. His body was a little cold. He wasn’t breathing! “Lorenzo – call an ambulance, now!” I commanded. Lorenzo did as told. “Claus? Claus?" I checked his pulse and found none. I started shaking the lifeless body on the floor, hoping that this would wake him up. “Claus? Please wake up! Claus!?!” I screamed.

The paramedics told us that Claus had died from an overdose of pain killers combined with an obscene amount of alcohol. If something were to have saved him, it should have happened several hours earlier. This meant that when I talked to him three hours ago… I could have saved his life… my best friend. My world fell apart.

Chapter 21: The Change

I was overwhelmed with sorrow. Especially because it was all my fault. Lorenzo tried to comfort me and help me through it, but it didn’t help much. I was devastated. Most of my days I spent on the couch or in the bed watching TV and eating chips.

Lorenzo pretty much took care of Maja by himself. I just didn’t have the strength. He made quite the effort to make it all better – I suppose he felt guilty too. When he had to go to work, my Mom, Jan, or Anne came to help with Maja. I was in a state of darkness and pain and wasn’t much help. I didn’t even clean anymore, so if it hadn’t been for my Mom and Lorenzo, the place would have been a real mess.

When three weeks had passed, Lorenzo took matters into his own hands, and dragged me downtown to see a therapist. I didn’t feel up to it and didn’t feel like it helped matters at all. But Lorenzo insisted, and he brought me there three times a week, even if it meant that he had to miss work. I didn’t see it at the time, but this was a tremendous help. If it hadn’t been for Lorenzo’s help getting me to the therapist, I don’t think I ever would have gotten better.

I eventually did get better though. After two months I was out of my depression. Now Maja was 4 months old, and I was able to take care of her again. I felt ashamed of the time I’d missed with her, but I had enough time to make up for it now.

Lorenzo on the other hand changed. He had begun drinking more and more often and lately it had been every single night.

Whenever I tried bringing up the subject he would snap at me or cut me off with a harsh remark.

A day where he was at work I called Anne to hear what she had to say about it. Jan answered. Typical. Anne wasn’t at home, so I talked to Jan about it instead. He had new information for me. While I had been in a coma he had been drinking a lot too. I didn’t fully understand – I thought he had been with me in the hospital all the time. “Yeah, he was. But he had brought his booze to the hospital, hiding a flask in his coat. I know it – I noticed it a few times. Besides, it was easy to tell that he was not quite sober most of the time.”

“I mustn’t be hearing this correctly, Jan? Are you telling me… do you think he’s an alcoholic? But he used to never touch the stuff!” I didn’t exactly believe what Jan was telling me. Perhaps he was still mad at Lorenzo and was making it up? “I’m sorry, Sis. I’m telling you the truth. Something must’ve happened to him during the time he spent in Italy.” Apparently so. But this meant that now I had to have a serious talk to him about it. And now I understood why Jan still seemed a bit cold towards Lorenzo.

As Lorenzo walked in the door I could tell he had visited a bar on the way home. He had a vague scent of alcohol only noticeable if you concentrated on it. I walked up to him. He smiled a goofy smile. “Hey… what’s up, honey?” “You are what’s up. You’ve been drinking. Don’t try to hide it.” He looked a little ashamed. “What’s wrong with a few drinks? No rule against that, not as far as I know anyway” he said and winked at me.

“But it’s not good for you. You have to cut down” I tried. “Alright, I will. No problem. Don’t you worry, I won’t drink anymore” he assured me. “It’s not like I drink that often though, don’t know where you got that idea into your head” he grinned at me.

I felt like the issue had been solved. No need to worry about that anymore. As we went to bed I kissed him on the neck just the way I knew he liked it. To my surprise he just kissed me on the forehead and went to sleep. What was going on? That usually did the trick. Well, no person is in the mood all the time… it was probably nothing. I went to sleep.

At 2 am I woke up because Lorenzo wasn’t next to me. I got up too and snuck into the kitchen… where I saw Lorenzo standing in front of the fridge hurling down a beer in about 10 seconds. I was speechless.

After he crushed the can and threw it in the garbage – aw, man, I’d told him like a gazillion times that cans need to be recycled – he popped open another one and drank it just as fast.

He paused for a moment after drinking that beer, and I stepped a few steps to the side so that he wouldn’t notice me. Then I peeked out again. He was drinking another beer. I wondered how many he had had. After that one he walked in my direction towards our bedroom, and I hurried under the covers again, pretending to be asleep. He practically threw himself on the bed and after just 5 seconds I could hear him snoring.

Lorenzo always got up before me in the mornings, since he had to be at work at 6 am. I got up around 8 am the next day and walked straight into the kitchen and opened the garbage can to check for beer cans. Empty. Now I understood why he was always so helpful as to empty the trash can every morning. I wondered how long this drinking of his had been going on right under my nose… probably ever since he came back from Italy. Oh, darn it!

As for Lorenzo, I don't dislike him as much as I'm wondering what on earth is going on. What specifically inside is causing him to self-medicate? The baby? Being a father at a young age? His parents? Claus? Some or all of the above? Why is his attitude changing so drastically? Did something else happen in Italy that we don't know about yet?

I am NOT a fan of psychiatrists, but methinks he needs some sort of help. If not a shrink, then AA, a clergyman (though he isn't religious, so I guess he wouldn't consider that) ... someone. He needs to sort it out before he kills himself or hurts his wife and child. And oh, it would help to admit he had a problem first.

But this is the Sims world, not the real one, so I have to wait and see what you're going to be up to next. :)

Chapter 22: Development

I was prepared for a quarrel with him about his drinking when he would return from work, which was usually around 4 pm. However, when it was 7 pm he still wasn’t home, and I was worried. But I calmed myself down – after all, he often had to work late in the garage. I spent the time with Maja playing with her and cuddling her. I was so happy I had her, my beautiful baby girl.

Then the phone rang. It was one of Lorenzo’s co-workers, Nicholaj. He wanted to talk to Lorenzo. Apparently he hadn’t shown up for work today. I was stunned. I told Nicholaj that Lorenzo wasn’t feeling well and couldn’t come to the phone. “Alright, I hope he gets better soon… he’s been sick quite often lately”. Then I hang up… dear lord, what was Lorenzo getting himself into?

He came home around 8 o’clock, as usual with a scent of alcohol. I asked him where he had been for 4 hours. “You know, there was a lot of work at the garage… we had to finish 5 cars before we were able to go home, so…” he excused himself. “Nicholaj called” I informed him. His face turned a little pale and he looked worried. “What did he want?” he asked, and I told him what Nicholaj had told me. “Oh, Nicholaj is quite the prankster. I’m sure he was just kidding” he smiled at me, but I didn’t believe his words one bit. “You’re still drinking, aren’t you?” I asked him with a cold voice. He looked baffled. “No. You told me to quit, so I quit. I don’t drink. At all” he tried convincing me. I sighed. I had seen it with my own eyes just the night before. I honestly had no idea how to deal with this situation, so I dropped the subject.

The next day was Friday, and I got up at 8 am as usual. I went into the nursery to check on Maja. She was sound asleep. Then I went to the phone to call Jan, since he already knew about Lorenzo’s drinking. I told him everything, and he didn’t sound surprised at all.

Then he told me that him and Anne had gone out to a bar last night, just to unwind a little after work, and they had seen Lorenzo there. He was sitting at the counter, gulping down one scotch after another. Jan had walked up to him trying to figure out what was going on with him, and Lorenzo had gotten up from his chair and shoved him angrily, telling him to mind his own business.

Jan had sat down next to Anne again, and after a while, a girl had approached Lorenzo. As Lorenzo was quite good-looking, the girl had begun hitting on him. Lorenzo hadn’t encouraged her, but he hadn’t brushed her off either. She had whispered something in his ear, and they had left the bar.



I didn’t like this new information one bit. Not only was he drinking more in one night than I did in a month, apparently he was also cheating on me. I didn’t have the courage to face him with these facts though… what if he left me again? I couldn’t bear the thought, so I kept it to myself.

He didn’t come home Friday evening. I was extremely worried about him.

At 5 am Saturday morning I got a phone call. It was from the hospital. Lorenzo had been drinking way too much, so he had been admitted. He was out of the woods now, but it had looked pretty serious for a while there. The reason they hadn’t called me sooner was that Lorenzo had no ID on him, so they’d had to wait for Lorenzo to wake up.

Of course I went to the hospital to visit him. He was in very bad shape.

“Michelle, I… I’m sorry. I don’t understand what’s going on with me. I can’t seem to stop drinking” he admitted. He looked very ashamed and sincerely sorry.

“What about that girl you left the bar with the other night?” I asked him. He looked confused. “What girl?” he asked. “Oh, come on Lorenzo. Jan saw you leaving with her! Yesterday, remember?” “Yesterday… hmm. I honestly don’t remember. Are you sure?” He looked like he really concentrated on remembering. “Oh! Now I remember! That was Tina… or something like that. She tried scoring with me”, he grinned.

I couldn’t believe this… was he actually laughing at the fact that he was cheating on me? “Jan told me that they saw you two leaving the bar together…” I began. “Of course. Her hitting on me reminded me of you and that I needed to get home. It was 7.45, and I was home at 8, remember?” His excuse sounded believable, but of course I’d have to check with Jan about the time of the events.

Turns out Lorenzo was telling the truth. I felt ashamed that I had thought he’d cheat on me. After Lorenzo had admitted to have a drinking problem, he also agreed to follow a program to help him quit drinking. He got a leave of absence from work so that he could concentrate on getting better. Twice a week he went to a psychologist, and thrice a week he went to some AA-like group meetings. I went with him a few times in the beginning for support, and after three months it seemed as though he no longer had any urges to drink, and he went back to work. He still went to the meetings once a week and it seemed as though things were really getting better.

He told me the reason why he had never been much of a drinker. Already when he was 16 he had felt the urge to keep drinking whenever he got more than a single beer. So he had pretty much steered clear of alcohol altogether. But in Italy when I had told him about the pregnancy, he had just snapped. He couldn’t deal with the situation, so on that night he had been drinking a little just to get his mind off things. But one thing led to another, and he couldn’t stop again. It was out of his control. And he was so sad because of losing me that one thing led to another - and he used the alcohol as a form of self-medication.

“This combined with my parents and… my upbringing. I…” he got tears in his eyes. “I haven’t had the best childhood. I mean, we had enough money, but… and my… my uncle… he…” Lorenzo choked. I put my arms around him to comfort him. My poor Lorenzo…

Despite this new information, I felt good that he finally told me about this. Apparently it had been nagging in the back of his head a long time now. And even though he wasn’t quite capable of telling me everything, I knew that they had worked hard on those things at the psychologist’s. And now everything was going to get better; I could just feel it!

Chapter 23: All Is Good, Part I

Slowly but steadily Lorenzo returned to his former self, and he no longer had any urges to drink. Well, occasionally he did, but then he’d tell me, and we would talk about it. This worked well for us. We really enjoyed life together with Maja. She had grown up into a toddler and looked absolutely adorable. Lorenzo in particular enjoyed teaching her to walk and talk.

I couldn’t help but feel incredibly lucky as to how well everything turned out in the end. It did look very dark for a while there – but now all was good. I even had a job now in an office – only part time, which suited me very well. Lorenzo made good money so we didn’t really need my income; however, I liked having a job and this one was perfect, with friendly co-workers and a nice boss.

One day Lorenzo surprised me in the morning. “Honey? Why don’t we go out to dinner tonight? We can get your parents to baby-sit. What do you say?” he asked me. It had been a long time since we had been alone together, so of course I was thrilled at the idea of going out.

He picked me up right after work, and then we went for a long walk in the woods. We were just relaxing and having a great time together. Just like when we had first begun going out. Then we went dancing, which was both fun and very romantic.

Afterwards we went to the restaurant, where we had a delicious meal. After we’d finished eating we just sat there, gazing into each other’s eyes and making funny remarks about the people at the restaurant. All of a sudden, Lorenzo’s eyes turned serious. He looked me deep into my eyes and caressed my hand.

“Michelle… I know I haven’t been the man you deserve…” he began. I tried contradicting him, but he wouldn’t hear of it. “No. You know I’m right. I… I’ve done some horrible things to you, and I’m genuinely sorry. I am incredibly grateful that you decided to forgive me” he smiled at me. I smiled back. “And… and I love you so much. I’ve never loved anybody this much… you are the only one for me; the only one that I’d ever…” he paused for a moment. “What I’m trying to say here is that… Michelle? Will you do me the great honour of becoming my wife?” he asked – looking very anxious and a little scared.

I was very surprised – I didn’t even know he was thinking about proposing! Of course I was ecstatic, and when he pulled out the velvet box and showed me the ring, it took my breath away. It was gorgeous! “Yes! Oh, of course, Lorenzo, of course I’ll marry you!”

We set the date to August 20, and despite the past events all my relatives were very happy about it. I guess they had realized that Lorenzo and I were supposed to be together. My Mom and Anne helped me plan everything, and 10 days before the big day, everything was taken care of, except for the honeymoon. My Mom told me that she had a surprise for us regarding that, so we weren’t allowed to plan anything. I never doubted my decision to marry him, not a single time. I was completely head over heals with him, just as I’d always been.

The night before the wedding I slept at my parents’ house of course. It’s customary not to see your future spouse on the day of the wedding. The next morning, on the day of our wedding, I was a bit stressed out, but I suppose that’s also customary. The wedding in itself was beautiful. My father gave me away of course. There were lots of flowers and beautiful decorations, the priest gave a beautiful speech, and of course there were two confident “I do’s”.

We just had a small party afterwards, with delicious food and several speeches. Lorenzo gave the most beautiful speech that made my heart pound several times faster. A few people had made songs for us, and in general the wedding was a great success. Lorenzo’s parents weren’t present though. I could tell he was a little sad about it, but when we opened up the presents we were in for a real surprise. Lorenzo’s parents had sent us a letter in which they had included a written apology for their actions – and also two tickets to Egypt at a luxury hotel for our honeymoon! My parents told me that they’d had a little chat with the Salvatores, among other things telling them that we hadn’t planned our honeymoon.

The wedding night was of course magical, even more than usual. I could hardly believe that I had finally married my Lorenzo! I was now Mrs. Michelle Salvatore. Oh, the happiness.

We had hired a professional photographer to take some pictures in a beautiful garden. It turned into a beautiful collage, which is now hanging above our bed to always remind us of this perfect day.

Chapter 24: All Is Good, Part II

The honeymoon was… well, absolute perfection! We left Denmark two days after the wedding and stayed down there for 3 weeks. The hotel was incredible, with an amazing pool, delicious food, and friendly staff. We spent a whole day snorkelling in the beautiful, bright blue sea, and another day on quad bikes through the desert. Everything was exceptional, and even though we were sad when we had to go home, we also missed our friends and family – and of course, most of all, Maja.

On the way home on the plane, I started getting stomach cramps. I figured it was due to food poisoning, but when it continued for two more weeks I started to worry, so I went to the doctor, who had very surprising news for me. I was pregnant again! I could hardly believe it. Wasn’t this supposed to be impossible? Apparently not. The doctor told me that it was a miracle. I was ecstatic and couldn’t wait to tell Lorenzo. I had a small fear in the back of my head that he’d react the same way as he did the last time, but his reaction was far from that.

“Oh, honey! Really? But, wasn’t this impossible? Oh, wow… that’s… that’s incredible. Wow!” and then he held me in his arms and kissed me romantically. I was so unbelievable relieved!

Finally our lives were on the right tracks… everything was perfect. But Lorenzo had another surprise for me. One Saturday morning he hired a babysitter, grabbed my hand, put me in our car, and drove for about 20 minutes until we were a few kilometres away from the city. He parked the car next to a wonderful house.

“Look, honey. This is our new home.” I was stunned. He had bought a new house for us! “I figured that our apartment was just a little on the small side for a family of four, so… I bought this for us.” He smiled and awaited my answer. “Oh, Lorenzo… I absolutely LOVE it!” and I threw myself in his arms.

It was a small farm, something I’d always wished for, and Lorenzo had even bought three horses for me. Life was perfect.

A few months later I gave birth to a beautiful baby girl – without any complications. My pregnancy had also been a lot easier than the last one, luckily. We named the girl Freya. She looked a little more like me, but luckily she, too, had Lorenzo’s gorgeous eyes.

Alright, the inspiration to the story came from my friend, who's pregnant - and her boyfriend wants her to have an abortion. That's why I made Lorenzo act that way, it was all planned out from the beginning - but as I wrote the story I just fell in love with him :valentine so I was sad to have to make him such a meanie.

So of course I had to choose a happy ending. Otherwise I couldn't live with myself. ;)

I just found this story (yea, I know I'm a little late) and I loved it. It was so sweet, I almost cried (I didn't though, so my pride is intact). I wasn't eactly sure about Lorenzo though. I wanted to hug him at points and hit him at others. Thank you so much for taking the time to share your creation with us.

Regarding Lorenzo's uncle, well, it's pretty much up to the reader to decide what happened there. :P ;)

Um, about the horses... I remember that I found them at modthesims2.com, but I don't remember who made them. :)

By the way, to anyone interested, I AM in the process of writing another sim story, but I haven't got much time, what with school and all, plus I have no internet at home anymore, AND I'm on the verge of getting a divorce - so it's pretty hectic here unfortunately. :( But I promise I'll be back with a new story some day... :)
