Gone... Updated 30/4 - EPILOGUE

She pressed her forehead against the cool, grimy glass and gazed at another nondescript street in another nameless town. She sighed and slid down in her seat, in the almost empty bus, and tried to get some sleep.

She startled awake as the bus drew to a halt, looking up as the other passengers descended the bus. She sighed and closed her eyes again. There was silence, then footsteps walking up the aisle. They stopped beside her seat. "Sorry miss, this is the last stop." a voice spoke. She sat up and looked at the driver, "what?" she mumbled, momentarily confused. "It's the end of the line, you have to get off here."

She pulled herself out of her seat and out into the cold night. She looked around her, "Damn!" she thought. The other passengers had melted into the night, the street was in darkness. She looked down at her bare wrist unconsciously, she hadn't worn a watch for years, relying on her own body clock to get her through the day. It was still the good side of midnight, "Damn", she thought, "I'll have to find somewhere for the night.", her hand touching the pocket where her remaining few dollars resided. She looked around again, and finding no one, turned to ask the driver if he knew of anywhere cheap to stay nearby. She was greeted by a hydraulic hiss as the door swung closed and the bus pulled away from the kerb. "Damn!" she thought again, "Left or right? Heads or tails?"

She heard a noise behind her and spun round to see him standing in the darkened doorway of the bus station.

She hesitated, he looked familiar... had he been on the bus?
"Here goes nothing." she thought, reluctantly approaching him. "Do you know where I can get a room for the night?" she asked, "... cheap..."
He held her gaze for a moment and she felt a frisson of fear pass through her. "There's a guesthouse a couple blocks up." he replied, "I could take you..."
"No!" she gasped, louder than she meant, "Just tell me where it is, I'll find it."
He raised an eyebrow, "Sure."

As she strode purposefully down the street she felt the urge to look back, knowing he was watching her, but she gritted her teeth and continued onward.

She walked down the narrow street of terraced houses, looking for number 17. The houses looked shabby and uncared for, but that was okay, shabby and uncared was within her meagre budget.

An old lady opened the door, upset about being disturbed so late. "Well, I wouldn't normally take guests at this time of night, but you'll not find much else around here, and I can't let a young lassie wander the streets. In you come now."

She showed her upstairs to a small, tired bedroom. It wasn't the worst place she'd spent the night, but she certainly wasn't going to sleep in those sheets. She lay on top of the dingy covers waiting for sleep to find her.

Thank you for your comments :D, and welcome katey_r and leos_pride, it's nice to have some new readers (the chairs on the bus are sectional chairs from one of the EPs, NL maybe, the same as the ones outside the bus station). I'll post another chapter when I get back on my own computer :)

"There's no buses on a Sunday." he said.
"You have got to be kidding me, right? This is the 21st century isn't it? Or have I just gone back in time to another era?" she said bitterly, remembering the few dollars left in her pocket.
"Folks are pretty religious round here."
"Blasted Wee Free's!" she muttered under her breath.
"Pardon?"
"Nothing!" she scowled and pushed past him, hurrying down the empty street.

She wandered around aimlessly for a few hours until eventually she came across a small park. She found a bench in a quiet corner and took a seat whilst she tried to figure out what she was going to do now. She pulled out her dwindling cash and counted it out, enough for something to eat. Her stomach growled in protest as she thought about food, it had been many hours since she'd last eaten. She stuffed the money back in her pocket, food would have to wait till later. She looked up as she heard the bells calling the last stragglers to church, and saw several people hurry across the park. There was a chill in the air and she couldn't sit here long, and there was no way she could sleep out here tonight, though it wouldn't have been the first time. "Keep moving." she told herself, and she walked towards the warmth of the church.

She stole anonymously into the back of the congregation and sat enjoying the familiar sounds of the service. She had been in many churches, in many towns these past few years. All too soon the service was over and she slippped out quickly, sure a stranger would swiftly be noticed in a small town like this. Warmed, she crossed the street, hiding in the shadows, watching and waiting for the minister to leave. Dispirited, she turned away as she saw him lock the door. She turned and drifted aimlessly along the road. After much walking she eventually found herself in the town centre, being Sunday nothing was open except a small mall behind the main street. As she pushed open the door the smell of coffee set her stomach rumbling again. She made her way to the small cafe and counted out the exact change for coffee and a sandwich.

She sat in her quiet corner enjoying her third refill, this would have to be her last, she could feel the waitress's eyes burning burining into the back of her head. Suddenly there was someone sitting in the empty seat.
"Are you stalking me or something?" she snapped.
"Something." he replied. "I'm Jake." he added.
She looked blankly at him.
"This is the part where you tell me your name."
She froze for a moment, "Alex." she replied curtly.
"And does Alex have a second name?" he asked.
For a moment he thought she wasn't going to answer, then she gave a surreptitious glance at the palm of her hand.
"Smith," she said, "My name is Alex Smith."
He opened his mouth to say something but thought better of it. They sat in silence for a few minutes.
"You staying at Mrs O'Connell's tonight?"
Alex frowned at him.
"Mrs O'Connell, the guesthouse?" he asked.
"Oh, yeah... no."
"Where are you staying then?"
Alex shrugged and stood up, "I've got to go." she said.
"Looks to me like you don't have anywhere to go to." Jake said.
Alex paused, then sat down again, slumped in defeat.
"Look, don't take this the wrong way, but you can crash at my place tonight. It's not much, in fact it's worse than Mrs O'Connell's..."
Alex thought about it, she didn't know this Jake but there was something familiar about him. She slid her hand into her jeans pocket, feeling the chill of the steel in her hand. "One more night then I'm out of here." she thought.
"Okay," she said, "Let's go."

They headed out of the mall, Jake leading the way.
Within a few blocks they were in a rundown, industrial part of town. Jake headed down a dark, shadowy alley, overgrown with bushes. "Maybe this wasn't such a good idea." Alex thought slipping her small switchblade into her palm. Jake paused outside a splintered old door, "Here we are."

He pushed the protesting door open and led they way inside. "Jesus! He wasn't joking when he said it was worse than Mrs O'Connell's." thought Alex.
"Why on earth are you living in an abandoned old warehouse?" Alex asked.
"Why do you have to write your name on your hand to remember who you are?" he shot back.
"Touche!" she replied.

"You can have the bed." Jake said, "I'll sleep on the couch. There's restrooms upstairs."
Alex looked around the room, all the furniture was old, shabby and recycled but everything was spotlessly clean. Jake grabbed a pillow and blanket out of the locker. "Time for bed already?" Alex asked.
"In case you hadn't noticed there's no electricity." Jake replied, "Oh, and there's no hot water either."
Alex sighed and fumbled her way up to the washroom in the half-light to get ready for bed. Soon she was fast asleep on his surprisingly comfortable bed.

Alex awoke in a familiar room, someone was leaning over the bed, caressing her forehead. She knew him, but somehow she couldn't remember his name. She frowned in concentration... the more she stared at him the more confused she became.

Alex sat up suddenly in bed, disorientated and dazed, her heart pounding furiously in her chest. "Where was she?"
"Hey? Is everything okay?" Jake asked.

Alex glanced across the room. She leapt out of bed and raced across the where Jake stood. "Look at me!" she demanded. She reached out and traced the faint scars travelling across his face. "How did you get these?" she insisted.
Jake pulled his face away, "A car crash." he replied quietly, turning away from her.
"Did you used to wear a red hat, or bandana, in your hair?" she persisted.
He picked up his clothes and headed for the stairs, "Yes!" he replied angrily.
Alex sank onto the couch. "Who was he?" she wondered. The first time she laid eyes on him she had a sense of deja vu, but that dream has seriously rattled her. Time to hit the road!

She decided to brave the icy shower before heading to the bus station. As she walked across the cold landing towards the mouldy restroom she noticed a guitar on the far side of the room, she walked over, curious. On the table next to it was a photograph, she bent down to inspect it. She gave an involuntary gasp as she looked at the pictures.
"What's wrong?" asked Jake appearing behind her.
"That girl! Who is she?" she stuttered.
"Beth," he replied faintly, "She was my girlfriend."
"Was?" she asked.
"Yes," he replied, with an edge to his voice. "She died in the car crash."
Alex felt her head spinning, she stumbled against the table, pushing Jake away as he tried to help her. Time to go!

By the time Jake got downstairs she had gone. He grabbed his jacket and headed out the door. As he approached the bus station he could see a commotion outside, with a sinking feeling he drew near the furore. Alex was having an altercation with the bus driver.

He stepped between them to intervene, the driver, seeing his opportunity, climbed aboard the bus and pulled away. "What's going on?" he asked.
"That stupid driver! He says my ticket is out of date!" Alex spat.
"Let me see it!" Jake said, taking it out of her grasp. He examined it closely, "It is out of date!"
"Yeah, well, it wouldn't have been if there had been buses running yesterday!" she exclaimed. "I hate this town!"
She tore the ticket from his hand and thrust it in the nearest bin, spun on her heels and took off down the street.
"Wait! Alex," he called running after her, "Where are you going?"
"Home! I'll hitch if I have to."
Jake grabbed her arm, spinning her round to face him. "Where are you going? I could maybe lend you the money for your ticket..."
"Ha!" she gasped. "I've seen where you live! What you going to do, rob someone?"
"I've got a bit of money... if it's not too far..." He saw a momentary glimpse of confusion pass across her face.
"I... never mind!" she relied harshly.
"Come on then," he said, "Let's find you a job."
"What?" she asked, in confusion.
"You want to get out of here, you need a ticket, and to get a ticket you need cash."
She pulled away from him, gazing longingly at the open road ahead of her. Eventually she turned back to Jake, "Sure," she said, "Why not."

Two hours later she was serving coffee in the same small cafe she'd visited yesterday. She would have laughed at the irony of it if the pay wasn't so pitiful. But what could she expect with no ID the duty manager had said, "Duty manager my ass!" she thought, "Jumped up little waiter more like!" Tomorrow, she had the joy of cleaning the beauty salon to look forward to, she sighed inwardly. "Never mind," she thought, "In a few days this dump will be history. Meantime, I need to find out more about Jake, maybe he can help me..."

Alex finally finished her shift and walked reluctantly back home, "No!" she thought, "Not home! Definitely not home. Just a cold, empty warehouse."
As she passed the pizza parlour the delicious smell of oregano and melted mozzarella hit her. She hesitated and looked hungrily inside at all the smiling faces and happy families, normal people. Twenty minutes later she stepped outside, pizzabox in hand, as an afterthought she went into the Off Licence next door and bought a couple of bottles of beer. She hurried back to the warehouse, all her hard-earned cash spent.

"I come bearing gifts!" she announced as she pushed open the rickety old door.
"Mmmm, pizza!" Jake grinned. "I'm in heaven."
They sat down and ate pizza whilst Alex told him about her afternoon at the cafe, and the annoying Duty Manager, Gary. "He's such a cretin! He won't do anything without checking the Rule Book first!"
"So," asked Alex, "What do you do for money?"
"A bit of this, a bit of that, construction, painting, just whatever I can get. In the summer I busk, for the tourists."
"Would you play something for me?"
"Sure." he replied and headed upstairs.

She sat on the cold floor as he tuned his guitar, he began strumming a few chords, then started to sing quietly. Alex closed her eyes and listened.

"... I miss you more than words can say, A part of me has torn away...
... But things are gonna heal again, Eyes once blind will see again, I miss you more than words can say..."

As Alex listened to the words she felt a tear roll down her cheek, she felt a great emptiness inside her as she thought of all she had lost.

When she had composed herself, she looked up and realised Jake had gone back downstairs. She followed him down and went over to her bag, "Here." she said, pulling the bottles of beer out of her bag, "I forgot about these." Jake hesitated, then reached over to accept one. "Thanks."

They sat and drank in silence for a few minutes.
"The girl in the picture..." Alex began.
"Beth?" Jake asked.
Alex nodded, "She looks... she looks just like..."
"You?"
"Yes." said Alex slowly, "She could be my twin..."
"I had noticed!" said Jake.
"Do you feel guilty?" aked Alex.
Jake looked confused for a moment.
"About the crash." added Alex.
"Ha!" Jake laughed harshly. "Why does everyone assume I was driving!"
"Oh! I'm sorry! I just thought... What happened?"
"A brick wall happened!"
"Oh! Did she lose control?"
"Oh no, she meant to hit it alright."
"What!" Alex exclaimed.
"Can we change the subject please!"
"Sure, I'm sorry."
"Can I ask you a question?" Jake asked.
Alex shrugged, "You can ask..."
"Is Alex your real name?"
Alex thought for a moment, "As far as I am aware, yes."
That was certainly a strange way to answer his question. "Are you in trouble with the police?"
"What!" she exclaimed, "No!"
"Then why do you carry a knife?"

That night Alex slept fitfully, she felt bad about her fight with Jake, and lay listening to him tossing and turning on the sofa.
She wanted to get up and apologise but something held her back.
She woke later, bathed in sweat, remembering vividly her dream, the dream of Jake caressing her brow. How could the dream seem so familiar?
She crept carefully upstairs to the restroom and stepped under the benumbing shower, it's icy jets clearing her head. Dressing quietly she sneaked out the door before Jake awoke.
Jake watched her silent departure...

Working at the salon wasn't too bad she decided. She liked cleaning, she found it soothing and reassuring, as if it was something she had done many times in the past.

She looked up and caught Riley, the stylist, watching her in the mirror, she smiled inwardly, the job had other perks too! She found herself wondering if he was gay... she hoped not.

Later, working the afternoon shift at the cafe, Riley came over on his break. Gary was in the middle of giving her a lecture about politeness to customers, "Great timing." she groaned to herself.
"Is everything okay?" asked Riley, as Gary headed to the backroom.
"Yeah," she relpied, "He's always an ass!"
Riley laughed, "You got that right! Hey, I was wondering..."
Just then the rowdy, after-school crowd arrived. "Sorry." shrugged Alex, and turned to serve them, trying hard to be civil, feeling Gary's critical eyes upon her.

"Here," said Alex, thrusting the bag into his hand. "It's my way of apologising for last night." Jake peered tentatively into the bag and smiled at the sight of steaming hot coffee, sandwiches and fruit. "Did you pay for this?" he asked cheekily.
Alex coloured, "Umm, just call it a perk of the job!"
"And does your boss know about your little perk?"
"What he doesn't know won't hurt him." giggled Alex, "But that's a shame, I wouldn't mind hurting him, severely!"
"Bad day at the office?" inquired Jake.
"No," smiled Alex, "Quite good actually." she said, picturing Riley's toned biceps!
They sat and ate, "I really am sorry about last night." sighed Alex, "I just... I guess I just don't liked being accused of being a criminal!"
"Hey!" said Jake. "I'm sorry about that, I don't know what I was thinking. I was..." he looked up to see her shoulders jerking as she tried to suppress a laugh. "Why you little..."

Later Alex pushed her way through the hot, thronging crowd at the Black Nightclub. She could see Jake, but he was always just out of reach. Every time she got close he moved away. "Jake!" she called. He turned towards her voice, "Hey!" he shouted above the deafening noise. She reached out to him, but the room started to spin. "Jake!" she cried alarmed. "Jake!"

She glanced over to where Jake slept peacefully, glad he hadn't woken.

The dream was different this time. "The Black Nightclub!" she thought suddenly remembering the name from her dream, did it exist? She fought the urge to rush over to Jake to waken him and ask him. She rubbed her eyes wearily, she wasn't going to get any more sleep tonight.

Alex roused herself groggily, she'd finally fallen back to sleep just before dawn. As her dream came back to her she turned to ask Jake about the Black Nightclub, but the couch lay empty. A glance at the light streaming in the grimy windows told her she was already late for work...

"Sorry Gary!" she called as she rushed through the door, "My alarm didn't go off!" she lied.
"He glanced pointedly at his watch, "I'll be docking you 2 hours pay!"
Alex glanced at the clock, she was just over an hour late, but she didn't have the energy to argue with him. She grabbed her apron and set to work.

It was pretty quiet this morning and she was glad when she saw Riley pushing open the door. "Hi, gorgeous!" he grinned, making her blush.
"I bet you say that to all the girls." she quipped.
"Damn! You got me there!" he laughed, "My usual, please."
She started to prepare his coffee, "Is there a club in town called the Black Nightclub?" she asked.
"Used to be," he replied, "But it was just called 'Black'. Burned down about 3 years ago."
She silently finished serving his coffee. "Why did you ask?" he enquired.
"Oh, just curious. I heard one of the customers mention it the other day, thought I might check it out."
"If you're looking for some action, 'Mercy' is the place to go. Maybe I'll see you there on Saturday?" he said with a questioning look.
"Maybe!" she smiled.

She arrived back before Jake, wondering where he had been all day. She glanced up as she heard the door creak open. She couldn't help but laugh as Jake walked across the room, "Hmmm," she mused, "I'd never have taken you for a lumberjack!"
"Quit it!" he bantered, "Some of us actually do real work!"

Later, as they sat and chatted, Jake couldn't help but ask, "So, where is home?"
"Pardon?" Alex replied.
"On Monday... you said you were heading home."
"Oh..." she said and fell silent.
"Are you going to tell me or is it some big secret?" Jake asked after a moment.
"Tell you what, I'll answer your question if you answer one of mine!"
"Okay." said Jake, curiosity getting the better of him.
"Why do you live here?" Alex asked, gesturing round the cold, barren room.
"It's all I can afford."
"But why don't you get a job? A proper job?"
"Ah!" he exclaimed, "That's two questions, you have to answer mine first."
Alex shrugged sadly, "I don't know."
"But... You said you were going home... That doesn't make sense!" Jake retorted, confused.
Alex just shrugged.
"So... are you going to answer my question now?" she asked.

Jake sat in silence, Alex held her breath. Eventually, with a long sigh he started to explain, "I can't read." he said almost inaudibly, obviously embarassed.
"But... but I've seen you read." said Alex, bewildered.
He shook his head.
"But..." Alex eyes flitted round the room, apart from a couple of old magazines and a yellowing newspaper, she could see no books. "I remember!" she exclaimed, "My bus ticket! You read it!"
Jake shook his head again, "No, I just looked at the numbers. I can do numbers, dates, time..."
"But why?" Alex asked perplexed.
"My turn." said Jake looking up. "Where were you born?"
She shrugged again, "I don't know."
Jake frowned, not sure whether to believe her...
"I was home-schooled." he said. "Where do your parents live?"
"I don't know!" replied Alex insistently. "Why didn't your parents teach you to read?"
"Enough of the questions!" Jake snapped, "You haven't told me a single thing about you!"
"Well, now you know as much as I do!" countered Alex angrily.

Jake looked at her, she was an enigma. "Geez, I thought I was messed up!" he brooded.
"Come here." he said kindly and gathered her in his arms. He felt awkward and bumbling, but as she rested her head on his shoulder he relaxed, her body fitting perfectly against his. He could smell her shampoo, it smelt of aloe vera. It reminded him of the old lady next door who used to put it on his cuts when he'd been in a fight, Miss Florence, that was her name...

Jake took a deep breath, "My mother... the only education she ever gave me was how to shoplift bottles of vodka without getting caught, and how to clean up after her..."
Alex tried to imagine what that must have been like, but drew a blank. "I'm sorry." she said.
"When you said you were going home, what did you mean?"
"Just that! I've spent the last 3 years travelling around looking for my home. Every time I arrive in a new town I hope that something will look familiar..."
"What happenend to you? Did you lose your memory or something?"
Alex shook her head, "I don't know. All I do know is my life started 3 years ago."
"That must be weird, not knowing anything about your past, kinda sad too..."
Alex held on tight and bit down on her lip, she was going to keep her dreams to herself for now...

They sat there for a while, just enjoying the silence, then Jake extracted himself from her arms and stood up. "Hey!" she called after him. He paused and turned to face her, "Thanks." she said. He went to turn away, "And," she added, "I'm going to teach you to read."

As he walked away Alex felt a warm glow suffuse her, it filled her veins with hope. "Wow!" she thought, "So this is what it's like to feel happy!"

On Saturday, Alex was working the morning shift at the salon. It was a hectic morning and Riley didn't have time for any playful flirting. Just before lunch, a girl came in and walked striaght up to Riley.
"Can you fit me in for a trim?" she asked sweetly, fluttering her eyelids.
"For you, anything!" beamed Riley.
Alex glanced over as he sat her on the chair, she was pretty in a spoilt kind of way. She sighed to herself, "Looks like he's got a girlfriend after all." and went back to sweeping the floor.

On the way home she stopped by the Thrift Shop, she still hadn't forgotten her promise to Jake to teach him to read. She sorted carefully through the old, dog-eared books and selected a few, paying her money at the counter.

"Surprise!" she said to Jake as she walked in holding the books aloft.
"What the..."
"It's time for your first reading lesson!" she said cheerfully.
He examined the covers, "But these are kids books!" he exclaimed sharply.
"How do you think people learn to read, Shakespeare!" she replied sarcastically.
After 20 minutes she could sense he was getting frustrated, "Typical male!" she thought, "Wants to learn it all in one day."
"Okay, lesson's over." she said, to his relief. "I was thinking about checking out 'Mercy' tonight, do you fancy coming along?"
Jake thought for a moment, "Sure, it's not really my sort of thing but I could do with a change."
"Great!"

When we arrived at Mercy, Riley spotted me through the crowd and waved me over. I turned to speak to Jake but he had disappreared through the dancing throng. I pushed my way through to the bar, ordered a drink and wove my way through to Riley.

He shouted something unintelligible into my ear, then led me over to the bar where it was fractionally quieter. As he leant close to speak and I gazed into his mesmerising pale green eyes...
"Hey!" a voice interrupted. "Aren't you going to introduce me to your new friend?"
I turned and saw Riley's girlfriend standing there, my hopes sinking.
"Sorry, sweets! Alex, I'd like to introduce you to my exceedingly spoilt and annoying little sister, Ciara."
"Sister!" spluttered Alex through a mouthful of soda.
"Yes," she replied cattily, "And you must be Alex, you're the one that hangs around with that weirdo, Jack."
"Jake!" retorted Alex angrily. "And he's..."
"Well, ta-ta for now, see you later! Be a good boy Riley!"
"Sorry about that." said Riley, "She can be so embarassing as times!"

They sat in silence for a few minutes, Alex still upset by Ciara's words.
"Come on." said Riley pulling her to her feet, "Don't let her spoil our evening, let's dance."
"I'm going to ask the DJ for a request, back in a minute." said Alex.
She leant over the decks, "Can you play 'Let Me Go' by Turracoo?" she shouted over the din.
He gave her a funny look, "Sure babe, whatever you want!"
As she walked away he called her back and pushed something into her hand, she looked down at the piece of paper, it was too dark to read it so she shoved it into her jeans.

Riley was waiting to drag her onto the dancefloor. She closed her eyes and let the rhythm of the music wash over her. "And this next song is for the mysterious red-head..."

Alex snapped her eyes open and looked around embarassed, Riley gave her a grin, "Mysterious, eh?" Alex started to laugh but then it hit her, this wasn't the song she requested. She glanced over at the DJ confused... he must have misheard her.

Later she sat at the bar once more with Riley, exhausted but exhilarated. "So, Alex... the night is still young..."
"Oh my god," she thought, "didn't he have a more original pick-up line than that?"
She was saved from answering by Jake appearing at her shoulder. "I'm heading home now. Do you want to walk with me, or..." he said, glancing over at Riley, "do you have other plans..."
"I'm ready to go!" she replied brightly, glad of an excuse to avoid Riley's advances. Afterall, she didn't want to appear too keen! "I'll meet you outside in five."

Alex and Jake walked slowly back to the warehouse, arm-in-arm. "So," he asked, "How was your 'date'?"
Alex giggled, "Well, he's pretty cute, once you get over the fact he's a hairdresser! Did you see his awful sister? I wanted to punch her on the nose!"
"I wish you had!" laughed Jake, "It would have stopped her pestering me all night!"
"Did she? I hadn't noticed."
"No, I don't suppose you did, you only had eyes for one man tonight..."
Suddenly Alex ran into the park pulling him with her. She threw off the boots and sock and jumped into the fountain, laughing and splashing. Jake stood watching her, an ache growing in his heart. "Damn!" he thought, "She looks so much like Beth."
"Come on in!" she yelled.
He paused then jumped in to join her.

Jake pulled her close and rubbed her arms to try and warm her benumbed skin.
"Why don't you get into some dry clothes, your frozen." he said. He peeled off his wet outfit and pulled on the warmest clothes he could find, wrapping himself in a blanket. "Here." he said as she walked back into the room, and he held the blanket open her to join him.

He pulled her close, letting the warmth of their bodies do their work. He closed his eyes and for a moment he almost believed it was Beth here beside him, then a whiff of aloe vera brought him sharply back to the present. "Oh, Beth..." he sighed. He thought back to the night Alex arrived in Black Ridge, as she stepped off the bus he thought she was an apparition, had slunk into the shadows, watching, unsure... Now... now, he felt an urge to protect her, guilt maybe... Tonight he'd seen the predatory look in Riley's eyes, had quickly crossed the floor, fists clenched. "I couldn't save you, Beth, but I promise I'll keep Alex safe." he vowed. Looking down at Alex's peaceful face, he gently laid her down, and pulling her close, fell asleep.

Next moring he woke alone, he saw Alex crouched down by her clothes reading a piece of paper, "What's that?" he asked.
"Oh, nothing." she replied, crumpling it up.

Alex felt herself enveloped in Jake's cold embrace. He rubbed her arms trying to get her warm but he was freezing himself. "Why don't you get into some dry clothes, your frozen." he said. When she came back down he was sitting on the couch, wrapped in a thick blanket. He held it open and she snuggled up to him in a coccoon of cosiness.

She sighed in contentment, and thought back to all the men she'd met in the past three years, they had all wanted something from her... even Riley wanted something... but not Jake. He seemed happy just to be around her, he was a friend she realised, a smile passing over her lips, maybe even a best friend, but certainly her first... As the warmth enveloped her body she felt herself getting drowsy and felt herself falling asleep in Jake's safe arms.

Next morning she awoke stiff and sore, her left arm totally numb. It took her a moment to realise where she was, and another to realise that for the first time since coming to Black Ridge, she hadn't had a dream. She glance over to her bed, well... Jake's bed, and the damp clothes she'd discarded on the floor. "The DJ!" she remembered, stumbling painfully off the couch. The found the crumbled business card in her jeans. Smoothing it out she discovered her wet clothes had smudged the ink, the only word she could decipher was his name at the bottom, Lorcan. "Oh well," she thought as she scrunched it up, "It was probably just his telephone number."

Alex sat on the edge of the bed, alone, pondering the future. She'd been here for a week and Jake couldn't sleep on the couch forever. She counted out her meagre savings, enough to buy a ticket, get her a hundred miles from here, but not much else... It was November, the nights icy cold, the days bitter. She wanted to stay and explore her ties with this place, with Jake, but as she looked around the cold, empty room, she couldn't imagine spending the winter here. She heard a door slam outside and she froze, her hand unconsciously reaching into her pocket. There was a cacophony of crashes and clashes, then another door slammed and the vehicle pulled away.

A few minutes later Jake walked in with the slightest hint of a smile on his lips.
"What the hell was that racket?" asked Alex angrily. "I nearly had heart failure!"
"Oh, nothing. I was helping a mate out, clearing out some old houses. I said he could dump some of stuff here."
"Yeah, well, it's not as if will bring down the tone of the neighbourhood I suppose..."
"What's up with you today?"
"My so-called life! I'm living in a freezing cold warehouse in the middle of November with no hot water, no electricity and no money! Could it get any worse!"
She glared across at Jake and saw the look of hurt in his eyes.
"Oh my god, Jake... I didn't mean it like that. I'm just cold and tired and all the noise outside frightened me... I didn't mean... I'm not ungrateful..."
He glowered back at her and stalked out.

Alex lay in bed waiting for Jake to return. Finally, she heard the door quietly open well after midnight.
"Jake?" she whispered. "Jake?"
"Geez, he must be really mad with me." she thought as he lay unanswering. She pulled the covers closer round herself and tried to get some sleep.


Next morning he had gone before she woke. She endured a freezing shower and trudged slowly to work. She should have known it would be one of those days... customers who couldn't decide which flavour coffee they wanted, customers who kept changing their minds, and Gary looking over her shoulder all day.

At lunchtime Riley popped in, at least that brought a smile to her face.
"How do you fancy going out one night this week?" he asked.
"That would be great!" she enthused, keeping one eye on Gary.
"Give me your number and we can arrange something later."
"My number?" Alex asked momentarily confused.
"Yeah, your phone number."
"Oh!" she laughed, "My phone got stolen... I'll just see you around. I'm working at the salon tomorrow."
"Okay, sure thing." he said with a wave.

She could see Gary looming in on her.
"Miss Smith! I'm sure we've had this conversation before, but there are rules about fraternising with the customers!"
"Keep your hair on Gary! That's my boss, my other boss... he was just checking when I due in."
Gary frowned at her, obviously not believing her, then stalked through to the back room.

She knew it definitely was one of those days when Ciara walked in.
"Hi Alex! I didn't know you worked here!" she simpered sweetly.

"So, how is your friend Jake?"

"In a minute, how's Jake?"
"I'm sorry," Alex said smiling, "I've just had a lecture from my boss about not fraternising with the customers, you don't want to get me into any more trouble do you? Can I take your order?"
Ciara gritted her teeth, "Oh, I forgot, I left my straighteners switched on. Silly me!" and she marched out of the cafe.

Alex walked briskly home, desperately wanting to apologise to Jake. Maybe she would take him out for dinner, there was a cheap Italian at the far end of Main Street...
She pushed open the door and stood there in horror, where had all the furniture gone? Was Jake throwing her out?

"Hey!" he said turning round.
"What's going on? I am really, really sorry about my outburst last night. You know, I saw a kid having a tantrum in the Mall today, and I realised that was how I behaved last night. I'm sorry, I didn't mean to hurt your feelings. You've been so good to me..."

"Are you finished?" he asked.
She nodded her head, ashamed.
Jake took hold of her hands. "Don't be sorry about last night. You gave me the kick up the butt I needed." Alex looked at him baffled. "I went round to see my mate Mike last night, the one I'd been helping out... he's given me a job, as a labourer!"
"Wow, Jake! That's great!" she paused as she looked round the empty room again. "Are you leaving..."
"No, that's the other good news. Mike said we can stay in one of those houses we cleared yesterday, just till they're ready to start work on them. They don't have electric, but they do have wood-burning stoves."
"Yipee!" laughed Alex with glee.
"And," he added, "The stoves heat the water."
"Double yipee!"
"And, there is a cooker, we picked up a new gas cylinder for it this afternoon."
"Triple yipee!"
"Come on, I'll take you over there now."

Even in the dark Alex could see the crumbling exteriors of the houses, but she didn't care, all she could think about was hot water and hot food.

Jake lit the fire and they stood in it's rosy glow warming themselves. Heavenly!
"Come upstairs." said Jake, leading the way. "The flue from the log burner goes through the bedroom and keeps it warm, Mike gave us an old sofabed, I thought you could have this room. What do you think?" he asked.

She stepped into the room and a wave of nausea hit her, this was the room, the room from her dream. She grabbed hold of Jake's arm to steady herself.
"Are you okay?" he asked, concerned.
"This room... I just... Have you been here before?"
He looked at her puzzled, "No, not before today, is everything okay? You look a bit pale."
"I'm okay, I just had a weird feeling of deja vu."
Jake studied her for a moment, his intuition telling him there was more to it.
"Let's go downstairs." said Alex, "It's warmer down there."

"Thanks Jake, for doing this. I've never lived in a proper house before."
"So what have you been doing these past three years then?" he asked, curious.
"Oh, you know... hostels, homeless shelters, a few parks and beaches..."
He pulled her close and gave her a hug, "As you as you're with me you'll have a home." he promised.
"Thank you Jake." She pulled away and looked up at him, "I was plannning taking you out to dinner tonight, as an apology, but now I think I should take you out to celebrate!"
Jake looked down at the floor, "That would be great, but this job... we're working over at Barrington, I'll only be here at weekends."
A knock on the door interrupted them.
"That will be Mike now." he said.
"What? You're going now?" Alex exclaimed sadly.
"Yes, I'm sorry, we need to go now, it's an early start in the morning." he replied walking to the door.
"Hi Jake, ready to go?" asked Mike.
"Yeah, just give me a minute."
Mike glanced over at Alex, "Sure, I'll wait in the truck."
Alex pulled him into a tight hug, an feeling of emptiness weighing heavy in her stomach. "Take care." she whispered.
"You too." said Jake, not wanting to let go. "Look Alex... Riley and Ciara, they're trouble. Just... just be careful, okay?"
"Okay."
"Promise me!" he said resolutely.
She frowned at his insistance. "Okay, I promise!"
"See you Friday!" he called over his shoulder.

The room which had felt homely and cosy a moment ago suddenly felt cold and empty. Alex glanced around at their sparse belongings, Jake's bed in the far corner, and next to it his guitar. Her eyes landed on the photograph of Jake and Beth and she felt a shiver of disquiet up her spine. She quickly crossed the room and turned the frame to the wall.

She made a quick tour of the rest of the house, carefully making sure all the doors and windows were locked. In the kitchen she discovered Jake had thoughtfully supplied her with some basic groceries, she smiled as she poured some water into a pan and made herself some coffee, he was always so considerate.

After rinsing her mug, she hesitated before heading over the easel by the stairs. She had seen it hidden away in a dusty corner of the warehouse but hadn't got round to asking Jake about it, it wasn't as if she could paint. There were some old, half-used paints in the tray, but no paper. She rummaged around and finally, triumphantly pulled two blank canvases out of a bag under Jake's bed. She was unsure about painting on these canvases, obviously made for someone who could actually paint! But a quick survey of the room informed her that her only other options were sleep or reading Jake's kiddie books.

She stood in front of the blank canvas for a long time, not sure where to start. Eventually she picked up the paintbrush and just started to paint. The brush seemed to flow smoothly across the canvas of it's own accord, and she watched mesmerised as a picture started to form. She paused for a moment and stared at the face materialising before her, it was the face from her dreams...

She continued to paint instinctively, unaware of her aching muscles, until the painting was complete. She found an old nail to hang it on and stood back, stretching her throbbing shoulders. "You know," she thought, gazing at the painting, "I think I might have done this before... and Jake... he's got a pierced nipple?"

Alex slept late, exhausted from her night's painting. She wasn't due into the salon till after lunch so she planned a leisurely morning, lighting the fire to heat the water for her first bath in... what was it? Two years? She lay there till the bathwater turned cold, reluctant to leave her little oasis. Eventually, though she had to drag herself out and dashed through to the bedroom to find some clothes. In the cold light of day the bedroom felt... ordinary... but still, she thought, she was uneager to spend the night there.

Outside it was a crisp, sunny day. Alex wandered into town, enjoying the sights and sounds of autumn as she strolled through the park. She sat on a bench and shared her lunch with some inquisitive squirrels then headed over to the mall. The salon was pretty quiet that afternoon, and thankfully there was no visit from the odious Ciara.
"Would you like to go out for dinner tonight?" asked Riley during a quiet spell.
Alex blushed, "That would be great!"
"Shall I pick you up?"
"Oh! No, I'll just meet you there."
"Are you sure? It's no bother."
"No, it's okay." replied Alex, with an innate reluctance to reveal her address.
"Geez," she thought, "Jake making me paranoid!"

"Wow!" thought Alex as they walked into Patraic's, "I hope Riley's paying as there's no way I can afford to go dutch!"

A waiter showed them to a quiet corner table and left them to study the menu, returning moments later with a bottle of champagne. "To a wonderful evening!" toasted Riley.
"A wonderful evening!" agreed Alex.
The meal was delicious, Alex couldn't remember tasting food this good in... well ever! And she was relieved when Riley insisted on paying, rejecting her offer to split the bill.

"Why don't we go next door." suggested Riley, "It's still early."
Business in Ted's Bar was slow, it being a Tuesday night, and they had the end of the bar to themselves. Riley, as always, was lively and garrulous, regaling her with tales of haircuts gone wrong. But the previous night was beginning to catch up with her and she could feel her attention drifting. She felt Riley's hand on her arm.

"Hmm, pardon?" she asked.
"I was just asking if you wanted to come back to my place, it's not far. We can have a coffee and I'll call you a cab."
"Thanks Riley, but I don't think I'd be very good company. I'm really tired and I think I'd rather just go home."
"Late night last night?" he asked jokingly, but she could tell he was disappointed.
"Yeah, something like that."
"Well, at least let me walk you home."
"No, it's okay! Let's see if I can hail a cab outside."
They walked out into the dark, frosty night and Alex scanned the street for a taxi.

"Looks like your out of luck." said Riley, "Come on, I'll walk with you."
Alex was about to protest when to her great relief a yellow taxi pulled round the corner, it's "For Hire" light on. She quickly waved it down, "Sorry Riley, take care." she said giving him a brief hug. "See you at work."

"Take the next left and pull over." Alex told the driver. She pushed the exact fare through the grill, got out, and hurried home.

"Hi!" said Ciara with a sneer in her voice, "You're home early, things not go as planned?"
Riley ignored her and turned on the TV.

Alex kept herself busy, working and cleaning the house, counting down the days till Jake's return. Riley hadn't been ignoring her, but he hadn't asked her out either. She wondered if she'd maybe been a bit abrupt with him on Tuesday night, but she'd never been on a date before, well not in the last three years anyway. She knew what he wanted from her, the same thing all the men she'd met wanted, but psychologically she was still a virgin, never even had her first kiss.

"Hey Alex, do you want to go to Mercy tonight?" asked Riley interrupting her thoughts.
"Oh! I'm not sure... Jake's coming back tonight."
"I didn't realise he was away!"
"Damn!" thought Alex, "Me and my big mouth." It wasn't so much that she didn't want Riley to know, just his sneaky little sister. She wanted to be there when Jake got back, but she really wanted to go out with Riley too... "What about tomorrow?" asked Alex.
"No can do. I'm meeting up with some old school friends in Barrington, sorry."
"Oh... okay then. Tell you what, I'll come out for a couple of hours, but I can't stay late."
"Great" grinned Riley.

She hurried home with a skip in her step, Jake would be home later and she had a date with Riley! Something caught her eye in one of the shops, comics! She was certain Jake would prefer that to kids books.

At home she heated some water on the stove and washed her hair, carefully dressing before leaving a note for Jake, "Back soon, Alex." She hoped he would be able to read it and left it sitting on top of his new comic.

After stopping at Carmine's for a cheap supper, Alex walked across to Mercy. Even though it was still early is was already busy. She scanned the crowded room for Riley's distinctive mop of hair, maybe she was too early. She spotted Ciara at the bar deep in conversation, and headed over. Ciara looked up as she approached. "Well, look who it is!" smiled Ciara. Her companion turned around.
"Riley!" she cried in surprise. "Wow! You look hot!" she blurted out before she could stop herself. She felt her face redden, but Riley just laughed and taking her hand led her onto the dancefloor.

"Let me get you a drink!" shouted Riley over the music.
While he was at the bar Alex noticed the DJ gesturing towards her. "What the... I hope he's not going to try and give me his number again." she thought as she wove her way across the floor.
"Why didn't you call me?" he asked.
"Look... Lorcan," she said hoping she'd gotten his name right, "You're not my type okay."
"What the hell! Didn't you even read my message?"
Alex frowned at him, confused.
"I see you didn't!" he relied exasperated, "I'm not trying to ask you out, I'm trying to warn you off your drinking companions." he said nodding towards the bar.
"Look mister, I don't know who you think you are, but my business is my business, period!" she started to turn away but he pulled her back.
"Just ask your friend Jake!"

Alex walked slowly back to the bar. Two people had now warned her about Riley and Ciara, she was confused. Sure, Ciara was a trouble-maker, but Riley?
"Riley said to give you this!" snarled Ciara, thrusting a glass into her hand, no longer needing to be polite with Riley out of earshot. Alex took a quick drink and spotting Riley by the bar, headed over.

"I have to go soon." she told him, finishing her drink. She suddenly felt woozy and shook her head, trying to clear the cottonwool.
"Are you feeling okay?" asked Riley.

Alex woke up, her head pulsing to an unheard rhythm, her mouth dry and sour. She looked around the strange room. "Where the hell am I?" she thought. She lay very still, trying not to aggravate her thumping headache, and tried to remember what had happenend last night. Had she gone home with Riley?

She glanced down and was relieved to see she was still fully clothed, but that small movement sent her head spinning and her stomach roiling. She staggered to the door and looked around desperately for a bathroom. She pushed open the nearest door and stumbled into a living room. Lorcan was lying asleep on the couch.
"Bathroom!" she managed to call out, Lorcan woke, confused for a moment, then quickly pointed to the next door along.

She just made it in time. She sat on the cold tile for a while, her stomach cramped from retching. Eventually she managed to pull herself up to the sink. She looked at the pale, bedraggled face in the mirror...

"Oh my god! Jake!" she suddenly remembered. She splashed her face with cold water and scrubbed her mouth with toothpaste to dispel the vile taste, then grabbing her jacket from the bedroom she rushed out of the house, without even a thank you or goodbye to Lorcan.

She ran most of the way home, furious with herself. How could he have gotten so drunk last night! Jake, hearing the front door open and close, rushed downstairs. His relief at seeing Alex, safely home, quickly turned to anger. "Where the hell have you been! I've been worried sick!" he raged, "Your note said "Back soon"!" I've been out all night looking for you!"

Alex had expected him to be angry, but not so incensed. "I'm sorry Jake, I don't know what happened... I must have had too much to drink... I..."
"Let me guess, you were out with Riley!"

"You can't tell me who I can and can't talk to!" she yelled, walking away.
Jake stepped in front of her, blocking her path and pushing her back against the wall. She could feel his body quivering with rage, a wave of panic rushing through her.

A loud knock at the door brought them back to their senses. Alex pushed him away and stepped aside to let him answer the door.

"Yes, I saw it. Maybe you could help me read it later..."
"Okay, but I need a nap first, I'm not feeling too great."

Alex relaxed into the vanilla scented bubbles. She slowly tried to piece together what had happened last night, but things were still a bit fuzzy and fragmented. Her thoughts drifted to Jake, she'd had a perfect weekend planned, but now... She touched her bruised lips, could still feel Jake's passionate kiss, it had left her confused and distracted. She had assumed Riley would have been the one to share her first kiss with, but she had enjoyed it, no... more than enjoyed it, she had wanted more...

"How's it going?" she asked nodding at the paper.
"Oh, you know... it's going."

Jake got up and gestured to her painting, "Where did this come from?"
Alex had forgotten all about it in the confusion of the last few days. "Oh! I painted it."
Jake frowned at her, "Are you sure?"
"Of course I'm sure! Do you think I would lie about it?"
"No, sorry... Where did you find the photograph?"
"What photograph?"
"The one you painted the picture from." said Jake, starting to get rankled.
"I didn't. I just... I just painted it!"
Jake looked at her curiously.
"I just... I've just... I've been having dreams since I came here... to Black Ridge. Dreams about you. This is from one of my dreams..."
Jake turned and studied the painting again. "Well, the piercing right, but not the tattoos."
"But... in the photograph of you and Beth... you had tattoos." said Alex glancing across to the empty table where the photograph had lain.
Jake shook his head, "Beth painted them on, it was for a party..."
"... at Black Nightclub?" Alex finished.
"Yes!" exclaimed Jake, "How did you know?"
"My dream, we were at Black Nightclub."
Jake shook his head again, "This is too confusing. Why don't you go and make that coffee."

They sat on the couch, silently drinking their coffee. After a few minutes Jake turned to Alex, "Tell me what happened last night."
"There's not much to tell, it's all a bit hazy really. I met Riley at Mercy, we danced and had a couple of drinks, then I started feeling a bit dizzy and hot, I drank my last drink too quick because I wanted to head home. Ciara took me outside and... I'm not sure, I think I remember someone grabbing my arm. Next thing I woke up in Lorcan's house."
"Lorcan?"
"Yeah, the DJ from Mercy... Hey!" she exclaimed, starting to remember. "He said to ask you!"
"Ask me what?"
"He told me to stay away from Riley and Ciara, and I told him to mind his own business. Then he said to ask you. What did he mean?"
Jake sighed, suddenly finding his shoes very interesting. Eventually he looked up, "Beth..." he started, "Beth suffered from depression, she'd been doing okay, taking her meds and seeing her psychotherapist... Then Ciara befriended her, and she started hanging out with her. Something happened one night, when she was with Ciara and Riley... The next day she was really upset but she wouldn't talk to me about it, she stopped taking her medication, she stopped seeing her therapist..." Jake shrugged, "I'm sure you can work out the rest."
Alex reached across for his hand, pulling him close.

"I don't know, but I do know I'd rather you stayed away from them, especially whilst I'm out of town."
"Okay." replied Alex meekly.

Alex paused in thought, "I just remember having two, one not long after I arrived, another just as I was leaving. I might have had more, but I just don't remember..."
"Just... just be careful okay?"
"Now," he added, "How about some reading, pass me that comic!" said Jake obviously wanting to change the subject.
"Sure thing, boss!"

Alex was glad things seemed to be back to normal, at least the surface anyway. The rest of Saturday passed quietly, she helped Jake with his reading, went shopping, just a regular day. By nightfall she was too tired to care about sleeping in the bedroom upstairs, she crawled into bed and fell into a heavy, dreamless sleep.

"I'd better go and see Lorcan today." she explained to Jake the next morning, "To apologise for the other night."
"Okay."
"I'll see you later."

"Jesus! Do you know what time it is!" exclaimed Lorcan, answering the door.
"Umm, about ten thirty?" Alex guessed.
"Yeah, and that's the middle of the night for a DJ!"
"Sorry," apologised Alex. "Can I come in for a moment?"
"Sure, just let me throw on some clothes."

"I just came round to apologise for the other night. I'm sorry I rushed off in the morning... I wasn't feeling too great."
"Look, I'm just glad you're okay."
Alex studied a slight fray on the rug. "Tell me," she said slowly. "What exactly happened?"
"I saw you having a drink with Riley, you were swaying like you were drunk. Then Ciara came over and started leading you outside. I didn't want you alone with them so I took you home here. You're lucky one of my friends was there, I could have lost my job walking out with you like that."
"I'm sorry." she said again. "Why did you do it?"
"Didn't you ask Jake about them?"
Alex nodded.
"Beth was my cousin... you look so much like her, and seeing you with them..." He shrugged, "I didn't want you to end up like her."
"Was I drinking alot?" asked Alex.
"I didn't notice, you weren't there for that long, and I saw you dancing with Riley alot."
Alex rubbed her hands over her face as if to rub away the memories. She stood up, "Thank you Lorcan. Sorry I woke you up."
"Stop apologising!" he yawned, "I'm up now so I may as well go to church, I'm not often up this early on a Sunday."
"Would you mind if I came with you?"
"Not at all, let me grab my scarf, it looks like it's been snowing."

Afterwards, Lorcan led her to the small cemetary next door. He walked over to a small, insignificant headstone in a far corner. She read the inscription, 'Here Lies Elizabeth Morgan Henderson, Born 27th August 1988, Died 8th May 2005.'

It had been a curious and tiring weekend, Alex was glad to get back to work, some kind of routine and normalcy.
"Hey!" shouted Gary as she walked through the door, "You got to get yourself a phone! Mary called in sick and I need someone to cover her shift this afternoon."
"Sure, I'll do it." replied Alex.
"And you'll see about getting a phone?"
"Yes, boss!"
Gary glowered at her insolent tone, "Make sure you do!"

Alex was tidying up the counter after the morning rush when she heard a customer entering. "Hi gorgeous!" She looked up and saw Riley smiling tenderly at her, her stomach gave a flip, was it nerves or something else?
"How are you feeling?" he asked.
"Okay."
"Did you get home safely on Friday?"
"Hmmm?"
"Ciara said she put you in a cab?"
"Oh... yeah, I got home okay."
"You seem a bit off with me today, have I done something to upset you?" he asked anxiously.
Alex looked up into his eyes, he seemed genuinely concerned and she couldn't stop the small smile that unfurled across her lips. Could Jake be wrong? She gave a small shake of her head, "No... I'm just tired."

"I've been worried about you all weekend, I couldn't call you, and since you won't tell me where you live..."
"It's nothing personal... it's just..." she interupted.
"It's okay, I know Jake's a private person. But anyway... I bought you a present." he said drawing a small package out of his pocket.
Alex stared at it, if she accepted it would it mean something? What would Jake say? And in that instant she knew she couldn't accept it. She glanced up and say his eyes gleaming with childlike pleasure, slowly turning to devastation as he read the mistrust on her face. She felt a flutter in her chest as she reached out with a quivering smile and unwrapped the small parcel.
She looked down at the mobile phone, "I won't need to worry about you anymore." he stated.
Alex tried unsuccessfully to suppress the big grin spreading across her face, "Thank you Riley, it's just what I need!"
"Do you want to meet up for a drink later?"
"Oh, sorry, I'm working a double shift today, someone called in sick. I'll probably be too tired."
"Tomorrow?"
"I don't know... let's see how it goes."
"Okay... are you sure everything's okay?" he urged.
"Yes, like I said, I'm just a bit tired. Maybe I'm coming down with something."
Riley hesitated. "Was there something else?" asked Alex.
"Well, actually," he said blushing slightly, "Ciara wated me to invite you and Jake round to dinner on Thursday, to celebrate Thanksgiving."
"Oh! I'm not sure if Jake will be home."
Riley nodded towards her phone, "Why don't you ask him?"

Alex sat in the staff room staring at her phone. She didn't have a clue how to work it! After spending 5 minutes pressing every button she managed to find the address book; Riley-Home, Riley-Mobile, Riley-Work! She gave a little chuckle to herself, he was so sweet.

That evening she found that card that Mike had left her with his phone number, for emergencies. She carefully pressed in his number...

"Hi Jake. Riley came into the coffee shop today..."
"No. I'm fine. But they want to invite us over for dinner on Thursday."
"Jake! If you're going to use that kind of language I'm going to hang up right now!"
"No, I really don't want to go," she lied, "But I said I would ask you and I am!"
"Oh for goodness sakes Jake, I don't know why I even bothered calling you! I'll just tell them we can't make it."
"I said I didn't want to go didn't I?"
"Why do you have to be so bloody contrary! Fine then! I'll tell Riley tomorrow then!"

She knew he didn't want to go, so why had she called him? She could have just told Riley they couldn't make it. Now she was going to have to spend an uncomfortable evening watching Jake sending Riley malevolent looks, whilst Ciara played the simpering coquette! She couldn't understand why Jake was so angry with her, all she did was talk to him, at her work, that was part of her job, "engaging with the customers" as Gary liked to call it. She had a hunch it was going to be a long evening...

It was late when Jake got back on Wednesday and she could tell by the way he slammed the door shut he was not in a good mood. He flung his bag on the floor and flopped onto the couch beside her.
"Do you ever take advice?" he asked bitterly.
"What am I supposed to do, lock myself in the house all day? I work in his salon, I work in the cafe where he buys his coffee!" Alex said exasperated.
"But you don't have to accept invites to dinner!"
"I didn't!" she said indignant, "I said I didn't think we could make it, you're the one that accepted!"

Her phone chose that moment to starting ringing, she leapt across the room to pick it up.
"Hello?"
"Yes, he just got back."
"Yes," said Alex, glaring across at Jake, "He's really looking forward to it!"
"Okay, I'll see you tomorrow."

"What the hell!" exclaimed Jake, "You're taking calls from him now?!"
"Oh for goodness sakes, Jake. He gave me..."
"He gave you the phone! You're accepting gifts as well!"
Alex took a deep breath, trying to keep calm. "It wasn't like that Jake, he was worried about me on Friday night, and he didn't know how to contact me."
"Why? Was he worried you'd find out he'd drugged you?"
"Drugged me? What the hell are you talking about?"
"You said yourself you only had two drinks. Why else would you blackout like that?"
Alex shook her head, bewildered. "Don't be silly, Riley wouldn't do that!"
"Think about it Alex! How well do you really know him?"
Alex shook her head again, she didn't want to think about it, not tonight.
"I'm tired Jake, I'm going to bed."

Alex lay awake for a long time, reliving Friday night again and again. She'd been sure Jake was wrong about Riley, but as she tried to remember, doubts started to creep into her thoughts. Eventually, exhausted, she fell into a fitful sleep.

She awoke to the sound of a baby crying, she rubbed her eyes, looking round for the source of the noise. There was Jake holding an infant, rocking it gently. He turned to her and smiled. The baby started crying again, she looked round but couldn't see them. She rubbed her eyes again and sat up, realising it was her mobile phone ringing, just another one of those dreams that had haunted her since arriving in Black Ridge.

Next morning they shared an uneasy breakfast.
"Do you want me to call Riley and tell him we can't go?" Alex asked tentatively, unwilling to stir up last night's argument again.
"No, we'll go. If you're going to hang around with a psychopath, I'd rather be there!"
"Jake!" exclaimed Alex reproachfully.
"I'm sorry, Alex, but I'm not the only person that has warned you about those two. It seems the more I tell you to stay away, the more you see him!"
Alex sat in silence. Was Jake right? Did she find Riley more attractive because she had been warned off him?
"Truce?" she asked cautiously.
Jake gave a laugh and wrapped her up in a big hug, "I can never stay cross with you for long!"

Jake held Alex close as they walked along in the frosty air, catching a hint of aloe vera as her hair brushed his lips. Why on earth had he agreed to this, he thought, gritting his teeth as they climbed the steps and rang the bell.

"Hi!" said Riley opening the door, "It's great you could come." he added towards Jake. Jake just glowered at him. Alex elbowed him as Riley hung up their jackets and gave him a warning glance. He pulled his face into a fake smile then turned and scowled at Riley again.

Ciara walked out of the kitchen, a vision in purple. "Jake! How lovely to see you!" she exclaimed walking straight past Alex. She put her hand on his arm, leading him away, "Let me get you a drink."
He glanced over his shoulder at Alex with the look of a condemned man, Alex couldn't help but giggle.
"What can I get you?" asked Riley.
"Just water please. Oh, here these are for you." she said, "We didn't know if you preferred red or white, so we got both."
"Thank you! Are you sure you wouldn't like to try some?"
"Maybe later..."
They wandered over to where Ciara had Jake cornered on the sofa.

"Ciara, could you get Alex a glass of water?" Ciara threw Riley a dirty look but bit back her answer, rising to fetch Alex's drink, much to Jake's relief. Alex quickly sat down next to him, "Having fun?" she asked innocently.
"Great!" he managed to squeeze out between clenched teeth.
Riley came and joined them, and Alex watched in amusement as Jake edged closer, draping his arm along the back of the sofa, staking his claim. Riley glanced at her with raised eyebrows but she just smiled and shook her head.
"Here you are Alex." said Ciara arriving with her drink, noting Jake's position with displeasure. Jake sat glaring sullenly at Alex whilst they made small talk. "What a great start to the evening!" thought Alex.

"Jake, you sit here next to me." said Ciara, steering him towards a chair. "Riley, can you help me serve?"
"What have you gotten me into!" hissed Jake as they disappeared into the kitchen.
Alex giggled, "You got yourself into this one! I think Ciara has a crush on you!"
Dinner was surprisingly good, even Jake stopped sending dagggers her way, leaving Alex to relax and enjoy Riley's company.

Afterwards Alex helped Riley clear the table and stack the dishes in the dishwasher. "Come outside for minute." he whispered, opening the door to the rear deck.
"Alex, I have to ask, is there something going on between you and Jake? If there is I..."
"No!" interrupted Alex. "We're just..." She hesitated for a moment remembering Jake's burning kiss... "We're just friends. Jake's just... he's just a bit protective."
"I don't think he likes me much!"
Alex chuckled, "And I thought he was doing such a good job of hiding it!"

It was clear frosty night, Riley pulled her close and pointed up at the cloudless sky. "Do you see that star there?" he asked.
"Which one, the one to the left of the other 7 million!"
"Yes," laughed Riley, "That one! It's called Alex."
Alex laughed out loud, "Yeah, of course it is!"
"No, honestly. I named it after you, I've got the certificate inside. I'll give it to you before you go."

"That's so sweet Riley." said Alex, turning to face him. The nearness of his body gave her a shiver down her spine.
"Are you cold?" he asked drawing her closer.
Alex shook her head, sure he could hear her pounding heart. She held her breath as he gently tipped up her head and leant in to meet her lips. It was gentle and seductive, she could feel her body relaxing into his arms.

Suddenly, they were startled by a loud knock on the door. Alex looked over Riley's shoulder to see Jake standing with a petulant look on his face, pointing at his watch.
"Sorry." Alex sighed, "Looks like it's time to go."
"Wait! There's something I wanted to ask you... this is my last weekend off before Christmas, I was wondering if you would like to come up to my parents holiday home with me? Stay for the weekend..."
Alex gave an unconscious glance into the kitchen, the thought of spending a weekend alone with Riley both thrilled and terrified her in equal measure. "I don't know Riley..."
"Hey, separate rooms, if that's what your worried about."
"I... I need to think about it, I'll call you tomorrow, okay?"
"Sure." he said, closing in for another tantalising kiss.

Jake strode home ahead of her, Alex hung back leaving him to his black mood.

He paused just outside their house and waited for her to catch up, giving her puppy dog eyes and opened his arms. Alex smiled cautiously and snuggled in close.
"I'm sorry for being an idiot." he whispered into her hair.
"It's not me you should be apologising to."
"I know..."
Jake thought about the evening that had just passed, reluctantly he could see why Alex was attracted to Riley, why Beth had been drawn to their company. He remembered his vow to Beth, to protect Alex, that was proving harder than he thought. "Oh Beth..." he sighed.

Suddenly he went reeling backwards as a stinging slap caught his cheek.
"What the hell, Alex!"
"You just called me Beth!"
Jake stood stunned, not realised he had spoken out loud...
"Is that what I am? A replacement for Beth?" she yelled. "Is that who you were thinking about when you kissed me? ...is that why you don't want me seeing Riley, are you jealous?"
Alex pushed past him into the house, storming up the stairs, furious.

She got ready for bed but was too incensed to sleep, instead pulled out her mobile.
"Hi, I didn't wake you did I?"
"Thanks. I just wanted to let you know that I can make it this weekend."

Later, she heard the old stairs creak in protest and her bedroom door pushed open, she closed her eyes, feigning sleep.
"Alex?" Jake whispered, "Are you awake?"
She felt the covers shift as he climbed in beside her.
"I know you're not sleeping," he said quietly, "You make these little snuffly sounds when you're asleep."
"What do you want Jake?"
"I just wanted to explain..."
"... I didn't call you Beth," he continued when she didn't reply, "I was talking to Beth, I didn't realise I had spoken out loud."
Alex gave a derisive snort.
"It may sound strange, or silly, but I've been living on my own for 3 years and... well, Beth was the only person I could talk to. I made her a promise to look after you, and it seems the harder I try the more I push you away."
Alex lay there digesting what he was saying, she knew all about talking to people who weren't there. She'd had hundreds of imaginery conversations with her parents, whoever they were, wherever they were...
"And to answer your questions... no, you're not a replacement for Beth. You make look like her but that's as far as any resemblance goes. And no, it wasn't Beth I was thinking about when I kissed you, and yes... if I'm honest, I am jealous of Riley."

Jake slipped out of bed before Alex awoke. He went downstairs and lit the fire then headed out to get breakfast. As he walked into town he thought about the events of last night. He'd made a mess of things again. Sure, she looked like Beth, but it was her personality that attracted him, strong but vulnerable, resolute but cautious. Warning her to keep away from Riley hadn't worked, but maybe now he had confessed his feelings for her she would think twice. His hand unconsciously touched his lips as he remembered their fervent kiss, she had felt it too. If Mike hadn't come to the door then...

Alex turned to the empty space beside her. How was she going to tell Jake that she'd accepted Riley's invitation? She went downstairs to discover the house empty. Jake had lit the fire so she made herself a cup of tea and went upstairs to run a bath.

She eased into the scented bubbles to ponder the events of last night. When she had first met Riley she had thought he was another guy out for what he could get, but since she'd got to know him a little he seemed sweet... and maybe even a little bit shy. But she knew she was going to have to tackle him about Beth before she could truly trust him. And Jake... Jake was the family she never knew, a big brother and protective father all rolled into one. Until the kiss, that was... and last night he confessed he had feelings for her, as she had for him... but it felt wrong. Jake was the reason she had stayed in Black Ridge, was maybe a link to her past, and she wasn't sure she could jeopardise that...

Yesterday had been a strange day, Jake had been remarkably calm when she told him about her trip with Riley, maybe he was beginning to accept that Riley wasn't the bad person he had thought he was. His only concession was that she leave her mobile phone with him and called in at least three times a day, that was nothing compared to the fireworks she had expected. The rest of the day Jake had been quiet and preoccupied in his thoughts, he obviously wanted to be alone so she had gone to the park, to feed the squirrels. She'd bumped into Lorcan and they sat on a bench for a bit, chatting awkwardly.
"I forgot to ask you the other day, why didn't you play my song, that night at Mercy?" I had asked.
He had looked at me strangely, "Turracoo haven't released a song called 'Let Me Go', trust me I'm a DJ, I would know!"

When we arrived I hopped out of the car and looked at the house in awe, "This is a 'holiday home'?" It was bigger that most people's houses!
Riley had the decency to look embarassed, "Yeah, did I forget to mention my dad owns Pelican Paper Products?"

After a quick tour of the house Riley unloaded the car and made lunch.
"This is really good, where'd you learn to cook?" asked Alex.
Riley shrugged, "When I was younger we had this really strict nanny, I hated her and used to hide out in the kitchen with the cook, Mrs Beaton. She used to let me help her, I guess I just picked things up from her."
"You had a nanny and a cook?" gasped Alex in surprise.
"Yes, and a gardener and a driver." laughed Riley, "Don't look so surprised, some people do you know."

"How about a swim?" asked Riley, after they cleared up.
"Oh! I didn't bring a swimsuit, I wasn't expecting a pool!"
"Don't worry, I'm sure Ciara has one lying around somewhere, I'll go look."
Riley came back waving a tiny bikini, Alex feigned a frown, "And I'm sure that was the only one you could find!"
"Well, I could get you one of my mother's?"
"Uh, no that one will be fine." giggled Alex, snatching it from his grasp.

She arrived at the pool before Riley and sat on the edge, dipping her feet in the tempting warm water. "Can I actually swim?" she mused, she'd always been too busy travelling, had never been to a pool, except to use the showers.
Her stomach gave a little flip as she watched him walk down the stairs, taking in his toned muscles. He was even more divine in his state of semi-undress... She could feel the heat from his body as he sat close to her.
"Ready to swim?" he asked.
"Umm... I'm not sure if I can." she answered honestly.
"What do you mean?"
"I haven't been swimming for years, I'm not sure if I remember how."
"Well, swimming is like riding a bike, it's one of those things you never forget." he replied, slipping into the pool.
"That's what I'm hoping." said Alex with a nervous laugh, as she lowered herself into the water. Riley took her hands as she tentatively pushed away from the edge. Her limbs instinctively knew what to do and she laughed with glee as she swam across the pool.

Later they headed out to the hot tub in a secluded corner of the garden, it was already getting dark and Riley lit the lanterns, giving it a cosy, romantic feel.
"So, tell me about yourself Alex." urged Riley, "I know absolutely nothing about you, apart from your name..."
Alex gave a sigh and began...
Five minutes later he knew as much about her as she did, including the strange dreams.
"So let me get this straight, your first memory is sitting in a park in Boston, with your hospital discharge papers?"
"Yes, there was some official legal paperwork too, I couldn't really understand it but I think it was about my name change, I guess I couldn't be called Jane Doe all my life." she replied with a bitter laugh.
"So did you talk to your doctors? Did they say why you were admitted?"
She shook her head, "It didn't even occur to me, I mean, I tried to read my hospital notes, but..." she ended with a shrug.
"Have you still got the paperwork? I could have someone look at it for you."
"Would you?" exclaimed Alex, a glimmer of hope sparking inside her, "Oh!" she said sadly, "I left them in a locker in Boston, at the train station, I don't know if they'll still be there..."
"Have you still got the key?"
"Yes, somewhere..."
"I'll talk to my lawyer on Monday, see what we can do about retrieving the paperwork."
"Oh thank you Riley!" she said sliding across, embracing him. "That would mean so much to me."
The feeling of his wet skin against her own was delicious, she reached up and gave him a long, lingering kiss.
"Ahem, maybe we should go have some dinner." suggested Riley.

Riley built up a blazing fire and laid out a picnic on the rug. As they relaxed in the fire's warm glow, Alex knew she had to ask about Beth.
"There's something I have to ask you," she began hesitantly, "Jake told me something happened to Beth one night, when she was out with you and Ciara... what happened?"
Riley froze, staring down at his plate. He thought back to High School, to the day Beth had turned him down, humiliating him in front of all his friends... that night, the night in question... that was the night he had planned his revenge.
He looked back up at Alex, "I don't know, I had too much to drink and went home early."

The logs were crackling, Riley was by her side, she wasn't sure if the warm glow she felt was from her blissful day or the delicious champagne Riley had served. She snuggled a bit closer, resting her head on his shoulder.
"Tell me about you." she asked.
"There's not much to tell really... I'm just your average poor, little, rich kid. Absentee parents who think throwing money at you makes up for not being there. Ciara and I used to get away with murder, wild parties, all sorts... you name it we did it." he gave a shrug, "I guess we were just attention-seeking. But having rich parents has it's downside, we never knew who our real friends
were..."
They sat gazing into the fire lost in their thoughts.

"Let's get some fresh air!" said Riley, pulling her to her feet. They wandered out to the garden and sat on a bench, the Christmas roses twining over their heads scenting the night air.
"My father despises me." said Riley faintly.
"No! I don't believe that!"

"What do you think!" chuckled Riley, pulling her towards him, placing slow, gentle, teasing kisses up her neck. Finally reaching her lips, the kisses increased in heat and fervour, creating a yearning within her.

Riley broke away with a gasp, leading her inside, to her bedroom. He stopped outside
the door and turned to her with a smile, enfolding her in his strong arms. She felt his hot breath on her neck, "Good night." he whispered.

Next morning it was warm enough to have breakfast on the terrace. They enjoyed the morning sun as they planned the day ahead; walk to the viewpoint, picnic lunch, then home in time for dinner. The panoramic view over Black Ridge was stunning, the food delicious, but all to soon it was time to pack up and head home. Alex waited whilst Riley locked up, then winding her arms around his back, pulled him close.
"Thank you for a wonderful weekend. I've had an amazing time."
Riley smlied down at her, "Maybe we could do it again sometime?"
"That would be great!" Alex replied enthusiastically, reaching up to kiss him.

As they neared Black Ridge, Alex could feel her excitement building, she couldn't wait to tell Jake that Riley was going to get his lawyer to try and find her paperwork. "Don't get your hopes up!" she scolded herself, "He probably won't find anything." but she couldn't help herself...
"Where do you want me to drop you off?" asked Riley, breaking through her thoughts.
"Oh, just take me home."
Riley raised a questioning eyebrow, she'd always kept her address private.
She smiled, nodding her head, and gave him directions. If Riley was shocked when he pulled up outside her home he didn't show it.
"It's probably best you don't come in..."
"That's okay, I know I'm not Jake's favourite person!"
After a final lingering kiss, she hopped out, waving goodbye. Looking up she saw a light on in the living room and hurried inside to fill Jake in on her hopeful news.

"Hello," she said, holding out her hand, smiling. "I'm Lily, a friend of Jake's. You must be Alex."

"Where's Jake?" demanded Alex.
"He had to leave hearly, he..."
"Who the hell are you?" cut in Alex, "I've never heard Jake mention you before."
"We met on Saturday, at the library." explained Lily. "I helped him find some books."
"So why are you here?"
"As I was trying to explain, Jake had to leave early and he asked me to wait and pass on a message."
"But what were you doing here in the first place?"
"I was helping Jake with his reading."

Alex felt like someone had punched her in the stomach. She was the one who was supposed to teach Jake to read, she'd been gone only one night, and he'd already found a replacement...
Lily nodded towards the table, "Your phone is there, he asked if you could call him on Mike's phone when you got back."
Alex nodded numbly and barely noticed as Lily quietly let herself out.

Alex felt deflated, her good mood of earlier wiped out by a few words. She felt a stab of jealousy as she thought of Jake here with another woman, she rubbed her face, trying to scrub away the feeling of dismay, then picked up her phone.
"Hi Mike, it's Alex."
"Okay, thank you... Hi Jake."
"Yes, I just got back."
"Yes, she was here."
"I had a great time thanks. Look Jake, I..."
"No, it doesn't matter. I'll see you at the weekend, we can talk then."
"Everything's fine, take care."
"Bye."

Alex scrabbled through the second box, hope fading. But just as she was about to give up a small glint in the corner of the box caught her eye. She dug through all the flotsam and triumphantly pulled out the small locker key. She carefully wrapped it in an old envelope and sat it next to her workclothes.

Next day she was doing a full shift at the cafe, Mary was still off sick, who wouldn't be with Gary for a boss, thought Alex. She waited for Riley to come over on his break.
"Hi!" she said excitedly, "I found the key!"
"Great," replied Riley, "I'll give my lawyer a call later and we'll see what he can do."

Alex glanced across to make sure Gary wasn't looking and slid the envelope across to Riley, her hand lingered on his for a moment, "Thank you." she said earnestly, "This means alot to me."
"My pleasure, I'll give you a call later. I'd better go, we're fully booked today."
"Have a nice day!" replied Alex, with a big cheesy grin, aware that Gary was watching her. She glanced under the counter, where her phone was charging, to make sure it was switched on.

At 5 o'clock Alex was getting ready to leave work, she checked her phone again, for the hundredth time, yes, it was still working, but she still hadn't heard from Riley. She thrust it into her pocket just as it started to ring, she scrambled to get it out and in her haste dropped it with a clatter on the tile floor. "Damn!" she muttered, quickly picking it up and pressing the Talk button.
"Hello?"
"Hi, Riley. How did it go?"
"Ten minutes? Okay, I'll wait for you out front, see you in a bit."
Alex put her phone away with a smile, and went outside to wait.

"I hope you like pizza." Riley asked as she climbed in.
"Mmmm! That's my staple diet!" she giggled.
Alex waited impatiently until they got settled on the couch with the pizza before asking Riley again, "So, what did your lawyer say?"
"He said he can look into it, I got Ciara to drop off the key at his offices this afternoon. But first he needs you to sign some paperwork, saying his firm is representing you. He's going to have it delivered to the salon tomorrow. Why don't you come round for dinner tomorrow night and you can sign it then, I can drop it of his offices on my way to work on Wednesday."

"He said that even if there's nothing in the locker he should be able to get copies of all the paperwork, of course that would take longer..."
"This is so exciting, I feel like I'm taking a step closer to finding out exactly who I am!"
"I'm glad to be able to help you." Riley put down the remains of his pizza. "Sorry, but I've got to go now, I've got some jobs to take care of."
"Oh, okay..." said Alex, more than a little disappointed. "I guess I'll see you tomorrow then."
"You bet!" grinned Riley, with a passionate farewell kiss.

As she walked inside she caught the scent of something delicious coming from the kitchen.
"Mmm, smells good!"
"Yes," replied Riley, "Ciara's cooking tonight."
As he helped her out of her jacket she turned to him, "Look, Riley, I'm not sure about this..."
"What do you mean?"
"I mean, I probably can't even afford to pay for these papers your lawyer had drawn up, far less for him to investigate anything for me! I got a bit carried away, I'm sorry. Maybe we should just forget about it."
"But I thought you wanted to find out what happened?"
"I do! But... maybe I should do it myself..."
Ciara came walking through with her coat on.
"You're not staying?" Riley inquired.
"No, I'm going to meet a friend, your dinner's in the oven. It will be ready in about fifteen minutes."
"Thank you, have a nice evening."
"I will, I hope you get everything sorted out." she replied, glancing towards Alex.

Riley steered Alex over to the table, where he spread out the papers.
"You don't need to pay a cent Alex, I never expected you to. Think of it as a favour, between friends, one day you can return the favour."
"But... but this is going to cost so much! I don't think I can let you do that."
"Alex, my father pays me a monthly allowance to keep me out of the way. I've never touched a penny of it... but this... this would be a worthwhile cause. Please let me help you."
Alex looked down at the papers, rifled through them, sighing in frustration.
"I don't even know what this says!" she exclaimed. "It's all lawyerese to me!"

Riley gave a chuckle and leaned over, "This one is confirming you as their client, these ones here allows them access to your medical and court records, in case they don't find anything in the locker. Mr Henderson has marked all the places you need to sign, he said if I get these back to him tomorrow you should get an initial report by Friday."
"Friday!" thought Alex with a shiver, "It's all happening so fast!"
She picked up the pen and gazed up at Riley, "Thank you for doing this. You're a true friend."
Riley smiled back at her, "Save your thanks for later!" he replied with a cheeky smirk. "I'd better go and check on our dinner."

"So what's Jake up to these days?" asked Riley over dinner. "Ciara called round while we were away but there was no answer."
Alex frowned, "How did she know where we live?"
Riley shrugged, "I guess someone must have told her."
"Hmm... well Jake's pretty busy at the moment, he's working in construction. He must have been out when she called."
"Is he working locally?"
"Umm, I forget where he said it was... I'm not good with place names, it took me two weeks to discover the name of this place! Ciara likes him doesn't she?"
"You could say that," laughed Riley, "She's had a crush on him forever."
"Poor Ciara!"
"What makes you say that?" asked Riley, a little too sharply.
"Nothing... it's just, Jake's obviously not interested."
"Got his eye on someone else has he?"
"Well, actually yes..."
"Anyone I know?"
"I don't think so, and I'd rather not say. Jake likes to keep himself to himself."

"Are you ready for your Thanks now?" giggled Alex, as they snuggled up on the sofa.
"Oh yes, I'm so ready!"

Alex was on edge the rest of the week, jumping every time her phone rang. Come Friday she was so nervous she couldn't concentrate on her work, and Gary took enormous pleasure in reprimanding her. At half past eleven she snuck a look at her mobile, 'One Missed Call'. "Gary, I need to take a break." she called through to the back room.
"Okay," he replied grudgingly, "Ten minutes."
Alex grabbed her phone and raced through to the staff room, quickly calling up the missed number. She frowned, it was Mike's number. A sudden panic rushed through her as she fumbled with the buttons, trying to return the call, "Why would Mike be calling me?" she worried...
"Hello, Mike?"
"Is everything okay? Is Jake okay?"
"Thank goodness for that, I was worried when I saw your number. Why were you calling?"
"Oh, okay. Tell him I'll see him when I see him."
"Okay, bye."

Alex ended the call with a sigh of relief. Jake was going to be working late tonight, getting the job in Barrington finished, that was all. She looking forward to his return, she couldn't wait to tell him her news. Or maybe she wouldn't tell him, she thought with a grimace, she was sure he would be pleased for her, until she got to the part about Riley's assistance... But on the other hand if she didn't tell him and he found out...
"Break's over." called Gary.

Alex stepped outside the Mall dejected, the long-anticipated call hadn't come. She started walking slowly home, the thought of an empty house depressing her even further.
"Hey!" called Riley, swiftly catching up with her, "I thought I'd missed you!"
"Hi." said Alex glumly.
"I wanted to catch you before you left, I got a call from Mr Henderson this afternoon."
"Yes?" gasped Alex.
"He's going to send you out a written report next week, but..."
"Just tell me!" interrupted Alex.
"... but he sent the key out to a contact in Boston, and he checked the locker... it was empty, I'm afraid."
"Oh!"
"Hey, we've only just started, don't give up yet. Here." he said, handing over a piece of paper, "This is the number for the Private Investigator he's got working for him in Boston, his name is Kelly Jackson. He's going to call you as soon as he finds out anything, okay?"
"Yes, I'm sorry. I guess I just hoped..."
"There's nothing wrong with hoping." he said, kissing her forehead. "Mr Henderson says there is still alot they can do, it might just take a bit longer."
"Thanks Riley."
"You doing anything tonight?"
"No, Jake's coming back later but I got a call to say they would be late."
"Fancy some company?"
"Thanks, but I think I'd like to be by myself for a while. I'll maybe see you Sunday?"
"It's a date, take care."

Alex lit a fire to chase away the cold shadows of the empty house. Sitting on his bed, wrapped in his blanket, she felt comforted. A sudden knock at the door startled her, "Who could that be?" she wondered. She glanced out of the window and saw Lily standing on the doorstep, "Oh, great!" she thought, "Just what I need." She pulled open the door.
"Hi!" smiled Lily, "Is Jake in?"
"No, he's not."
"Oh, right then." she said, hesitating, "Will you tell him I called round?"
"Sure." replied Alex, noting the book in her hand. "Is that for Jake?"
"What? Oh, yes." said Lily, glancing down.
Alex held out her hand, "Here, I'll give it to him for you."
Lily grasped the book to her chest, "Oh no, it's okay. I'll come back tomorrow."
"It's no problem." persisted Alex.
"It's okay." replied Lily insistently, "Just tell him I'll see him tomorrow." And she hurried along the street.

Her visit left Alex unsettled, aimlessly pacing the floor, before finally deciding to go to bed. In bed things weren't any better, she tossed and turned, anxiously listening out for Jake's return. Eventually the long hours she'd put in this week caught up with her and she fell into a restless sleep.

Alex awoke in a familiar room, someone was leaning over the bed, caressing her forehead. She knew him, but somehow she couldn't remember his name. She frowned in concentration... the more she stared at him the more confused she became.

Alex woke with a jerk, relaxing back onto the pillows as she realised it was just another dream. Someone was leaning over the bed, caressing her forehead. She frowned in concentration... then suddenly leapt up with an piercing scream.
"Hey, it's just me, Jake."

Jake reached out and touched her trembling arm.
"Are you okay?" he asked with concern.
"Alex nodded, "Yes, I just had another of those dreams."
"What was it about this time?"
"I dreamt you were leaning over me, stroking my forehead, and then I woke up and there you were, leaning over me stroking my forehead!"
"Geez, no wonder you freaked out!"
Alex reached up and touched the red bandana on his hair, "Why are you wearing this?"
"I just came straight from work, I haven't had time to change, or shower for that matter." He reached over and felt the still warm flue next to the bed, "I'm going to have a quick bath, are you okay now?"
"Yes, I'm fine, I'm going to make some hot chocolate, would you like some?"
"Thanks."

Alex threw some logs into the fire and went through to the kitchen. As she slowly heated the milk she thought about her dreams, waking up like that tonight has really shaken her.

She stood lost in her thoughts until the sound of the bath water draining through the old pipes roused her. She finished making the hot chocolate and carried it through to the living room. Jake came down and joined her, his wet hair slicked back.
"That's the job in Barrington finished now." he started, "Our next job is here, in Black Ridge, we're going to be refurbishing 'Black', the nightclub you were asking about."
"Hmm." said Alex, lost in her own thoughts.
"It means I'll be home every night." Jake added.
"That's nice."

"Is everything okay?" frowned Jake, expecting a bit more enthusiasm.
"Hmm? Yes. Jake... can I ask you something personal?"
"I guess..."
"Do you have any children?"
Jake stared at her for a moment, then turned away, but not before she saw the glint of a tear in his eye.
"No." he said gruffly, picking up their empty cups. "I don't."

By the time he came back from the kitchen, he had composed himself again.
"So, what did you want to talk to me about?" he asked.
"Pardon?" asked Alex, confused.
"On the phone, the other day, you said you wanted to talk about something when I got back."
"Oh... yes."
"Well?"
Alex took a deep breath, "Riley..."
"You want to talk to me about Riley?" Jake exploded. "I can't believe this!"
"No! It's not about Riley, it's about me! Just... just listen, please!"

Jake looked at her in disbelief.
"Why on earth do you trust him? How could you sign those papers? Do you even know what was written on them?"
"Riley said..."
"And you believed him?" interrupted Jake incredulously.
"Yes... I did."
Alex sighed, "Jake you don't realise what it feels like, having no past. I don't know my parents, I don't know my name, I don't know how old I am, I don't even know when my birthday is!"
Alex felt hot tears spring to her eyes, followed by Jake's strong arms pulling her into his warm embrace.

He tipped her face up and gently kissed away her tears, before slowly reaching down to kiss her lips...
This time there was no knock at the door to stop them.

Alex lay next to Jake's warm, naked body, horrified at what she had just done. After everything Riley had done for her, she had betrayed him in the worst possible way. She felt sick with guilt and knew she couldn't stay here any longer.

She listened to Jake's rhythmic breathing, waiting until she was certain he was asleep, before slipping out from under his arm. She crept silently over to the wardrobe, carefully removing her clothes, mindful not to let the hangers jangle against each other. She retrieved the rest of her belongings from the boxes in the corner and stuffed everything into two bags, then slowly, carefully crept down the old, creaking staircase. As she looked around the familiar room, her eyes landed on her painting of Jake. He was the closest thing she'd had to family, but one moment of unrestraint had put pay to that. She scrabbled around for some paper, and wrote a brief note trying to explain...

Dawn was breaking by the time she reached Riley's house. She put down her bags and retrieved his note from her pocket. She hesitated as she saw a shadow pass behind the window, and startled as the door opened. Riley looked at her in surprise, till he noticed the note in her hand, the bags sitting behind her. He took her arm, pulling her inside.
"Riley!" she protested, shrugging off his grasp.
Ciara walked thourgh to see what the commotion was. She looked to Alex, then Riley, then back to Alex.
"What's going on here?" she asked.

Riley grasped Alex by the wrist and led her upstairs to his bedroom. He closed the door firmly behind him and turned to face Alex, ripping the note out of her clenched hand. Her waved it in front of her, "Is this all I'm worth! A note pushed under the door?"
Alex sank back onto the bed, unable to meet his eyes.

With a sigh Riley crossed the room, joining her on the bed.
"Is this about yesterday? Are you going to run away just because we didn't find anything in the locker?" he asked, reaching his arm round her shoulders.
She shrank from his touch, stepping across the room to stand by the door.
"It's worse, much worse than that."
He thought for a few moments, then glared malevolently across the room, "It's Jake isn't it!" he spat, "God! I should have known!"
Alex nodded and turned to leave.
"Wait!" he called. "Does Jake know you're leaving, or did you just leave him a note too?"
The look of shame on Alex's face was all the answer he needed.
"Just get out!" he yelled.

He heard raised voices below then the front door slam shut. Moments later there was a knock on his door and Ciara walked in. "What was that all about?" she asked. He held out the unread note, grabbing it she quickly read it through.
"Shit! She slept with Jake?" she asked incredulously. "I'm sorry Riley." she added coming and sitting next to him on the bed. "What are you going to do?"

He stood up, "Get changed and go to work."
"Riley, I may be your spoilt, little brat of a sister, but even I can see how much she meant to you. Hell, they're usually lucky if they make it to the second date before you use them and dump them. So, I'm only going to say this once, go after her!"
"What! Are you mad? Do you think I could ever forgive her for what she's done?"
Ciara shrugged, "I don't know, but look at it this way... if you don't go after her, Jake will... do you want him to win?"
