I'm trying to build the apartments from "The Big Bang Theory", but am having trouble with the building's most iconic feature, the elevator/stairs.

I've looked at several tutorials for U-shaped stairs, but every time I actually get it to work, I wind up with a foundation height level between floors which won't work with elevators.
But I'm also wondering if it'll be possible to add the foundations to higher levels without cutting off the walk space?
Does anyone know how to do this, or should I just find someone to mesh me fake deco stairs?
