SparklyCookie, I love the flowers on the windowsills, they're so cute!
This is my first house so i'm very proud of how it came out. Usually I just tend to download houses because i'm too lazy to make my own

Here's where the cabs come from ... the pregnant girlfriend of one of my sims just moved in with him, so they need to find a bigger place -- they'll be living on the two floors up above the Yellow Cab Co.

Tenielle, I always love your houses. There's a simplicity to them, yet they always look so very nice.
Anyway, it's been a while since I've been in a building mood, but lately I have been. So, I built some stuff for my neighborhood that's a Prosperity/Multi-Legacy/Build-A-City melange. Some pics:
One of the businesses, a pool hall with a bar and card tables:

Here's a (unfinished) house I built for my new legacy family, the Taylors

So far, it's 2 bed, 1 bath, waiting for some more money to come in so they can finish it.

Flux, I'm totally jazzed by the Cab Co. Did you make that sign on Mog's template? Lots of talent on this page, loving the clean architecture. Stuff like these great suburban lots and Tenielle's condo are what should have shipped with the game. Looks deceptively simple, really takes a good eye to achieve.
This is the Crystal Beach Motel. I built it because I wanted a Gulf Coast resort, not tropical, then I donated it to the prize bin at Sims Urbania.

So as people have probably guessed, i love building small modern homes,
i figure its easy to make awesome large homes that a very interesting but its a lot harder to create an eye catching small home,
i believe the outside is just as important as the inside, your furniture should look like it belongs and is meant to be there
therefore i would love to see some of yours,
what have you got?
so here is another of mine, this is a small simple modern home,
what do you think? and i will return the favor

There are a couple of homes I am working on right now...
The first home is NOT done, shown by the lack of landscaping. I do the landscaping last.

The second home is 1377 Mill Street (http://www.modthesims.info/download.php?t=400012)-- my favorite I've build with the Sims 3. Not only is the landscaping over-the-top (but I like it ;]), I also love the actual home. It's my absolute fav.

I made over the Pleasant's house. I really didn't change that much, but I did add a porch around the whole exterior of the house. I also built a large gazebo in the yard to take up some of the unused space. I think decorating their house is the most time I have ever spent on the outside of a single house!

Great. Now not only do I want to make-over all the Maxis sims, I want to make over all the Maxis houses. I'm thinking maybe a Reverse-Foundations style challenge - don't mess with the existing architectures. No adding foundations/decks/porches, or tearing out walls or building new ones. Just remodel... but a lot of those base houses are so unplayable with Seasons.... (Pleasant house, anybody?)

So I downloaded some really nice siding made by Honeywell here at MTS that is actually realistically variegated instead of one unrealistic solid color. It inspired me to build some "pretty houses," which I haven't done in a while, being focused on playing. (When I'm playing, my Sims tend to cobble together ugly houses willy-nilly.) I'm not at all done with the "guts" or landscaping of these two houses, but I thought I'd post some pics of the outsides.
First: A traditional American suburban thing, with a wrap-around side porch and little screen porch off the back. It has a relatively small footprint, built on a 3x3 lot, but lots of living space inside, with four good-size bedrooms.
http://i654.photobucket.com/albums/uu261/icads_sims/suburb_frnt.jpg
http://i654.photobucket.com/albums/uu261/icads_sims/suburb_rear.jpg
Next: An attempt at a modern/contemporary style, at which I usually utterly fail, in a "lakefront" kind of setting with lots of glass on the back. I didn't like this house because to me it was just boxy and uninteresting, but then I decided to jazz it up using different exterior finishes, and now I kind of like it. I think the interior will be really pretty, and I'm also experimenting with "terracing" the back yard. I'm pretty much failing at the terracing, but it's fun to try...

A house I created in Desiderata Valley, using stuff from the Bohemian collection (I believe that came with Apartment Life)
http://i1017.photobucket.com/albums/af292/alexandrasims2/snapshot_198c2937_798c293c.jpg
I found out how to make the foundation raised--you have to raise the ground level, lay the foundation, then bring the ground back to street level. The foundation does not just "sit" on the ground; it goes INTO the ground.
Rear view of the house. I thought the bistro table and chairs that came with Seasons looked good on the patio:
http://i1017.photobucket.com/albums/af292/alexandrasims2/snapshot_198c2937_d98c297d.jpg
Side view. This is where I played with the ground level, since this is basically built into a hillside:

I built a house for Cyrus and Gina Leong, and for Cyrus's sister Chelsea Leong and her future husband Clarence. Cyrus and Gina are currently the only ones living in it, because Chelsea and Clarence are still in college.
I set it up kind of apartment like. One side is Cryus and Gina's area, the other Chelsea and Clarence's. The middle portion is a shared area of the house between the two couples.

Good houses everyone! :gjob:
Pennysims, thanks for your kind words. I like your pics, too.
jman93, you build very nice modern houses, so simple yet original.
kayleigh83, cute houses, too. The last one is awesome.
Tenielle, I'm in love with Baskerville, its tiny lovely houses and its unique atmosphere. (I use the Plasticbox's baskerville SC4 for my NH by the way)
Unfortunately, mu HN glitched, perhaps because I used big lots, and my PC couldn't handle them; now I build only on 3*3 or smaller lots.
Here are 2 houses from the old part of my new NH (lot size is 2*4)

No, EA-Maxis builders were not drugged. Their lots are not horrible at all. I don't care if you don't care about my opinion, which anyway is about your attitude and not about your houses. Read the rules about pictures:

And I don't understand why you are being disrespectful in your first post, when no one said anything to you (unless you had been banned before). So I suggest that if you want to stay as a member of this site, stop being an organ that is at the end of the digestive tube. I'm not sure if you are a troll, so I wrote this. Delete my post if it's against the rules, moderators. :mod: (I finally found a reason to insult someone, I needed that).

continuing fixing lots and making new ones. and as always negative feedback will not be accepted under any circunstance.
UPDATE:
fixed this horrible maxis apartment lot. it was so ugly it was a point i thinked to delete it and start all over. but no i was very bored and i did it.
now the last floor with pizarra rooftops its with elevators as a public space to use for free computers, hng out with your magical friends on the room of good witchcraft and the other of the bad witchcraft. two bathrooms one for male other for female sims. and seats with the weird machine to do excercise (the one that the sims spins around) and some musical instruments to the sims does not wanna do other stuff. the apartments where all recycled. here the shots:

if the builders of EA-maxis would have cared of making look the building as a REAL old apartment building i should not do anything. but apparently nobody cares nothing there like when they put on the apartment life trailers sims going on a bike and then the expansion was released and that was only on the imagination of EA-maxis team. but dont worry i am here to fix all of them!!! and its looks awesome now.

Excuse me... :giggler:
Are you sure you were watching the AL trailer? Because a new object with a new animation doesn't come out directly of a person's mind, it needs to be created.

your avatar pic looks cute, so i will give you the unique pleasure of reading and awnsering your post, since you seen nice also. first please remember its a game its not the real life. second i use so many solar panels since at the end all the apartments habitants gets to live for free since that many solar panels makes many many simoleons. i would say pays all the bills plus the apartment rent plus an extra so the sims can buy stuff or save simoleons. yes one of the AL trailers showed one male sim on a bike and a male sim jumped behind him and they drove away. so where its the bike???
and i add windows since my country architecture has those kind of constructions. since when uruguay started and even today any insane architect can come and with enough money can demolish any beautiful house that i made on sims 2 and do any horrible building. but to awnser at you, there are many victorian houses and even mansions with that kind of windows and skylights on my country. i just need to say to you there is a museum build originally as hydrotherapy center on 1890-1893 thats has all the front with windows and balconies and a double skylight that measures in feet: 328 (100 meters) divided as a square (82 feet = 25 meters every side) so before tell me that i am making insane buildings come to my country watch our insane architecture and then tell me i am making unrealistic horrible lots. i leave you the picture of the skylight. its so big that my digital camera from the main stairs rest step cannot take it 100%:

I never said that your buildings were horrible, just that I've never seen that style. I just don't agree with all your comments about how horrible are Maxis lots. You were doing the same thing I was doing: criticising other architectonic styles because you don't like them. But, it's ok, it's your opinion. And If you hadn't written your first post in a defensive and a bit rude way, maybe I wouldn't had answered like that.

well if you come to montevideo dearest argentinian fellow or fella or whatever, come to the MAPI (museo de arte precolombino e indigena and on english for the rest, museum of art precolumbian & indian) you can see a half restaured building with the huge skylight i leaved the screenshot behind. i will leave a picture link to see how was about to collapse then in part restored with canarian island money as a donation gift for our country. anyways my buildings may be crazy yes, and i dont like maxis lots because the apartment life "old" apartments where exactly as a modern build but with bohemian rooftops. the old houses where not like that at all. i will also leave a beautiful mansion picture that now in days its waiting to collapse since its on real bad shape and nobody cares about it.

and before nobody tells at me this is not a real life picture thread i know and i am sorry. but its my way of justify at least why my houses the exterior looks like that, we could say "insane".

Nissun: I just love the solar power plant. It's so simple, yet so creative and definately fits into Strangetown nicely.
basson_crazy: That's a beautiful nature lot! You don't tend to see many people make parks that are strictly just plants and nature, so it's very nice and refreshing to see a new idea like that.
First time posting in this thread, hope community lots are okay. I took the strip-mall thing from Strangetown (the one with the "abandoned factory" that has a pool in the bottom of it :wtf: ), and began re-modeling it to place in other hoods. I plan on making it look more grungy and like it actually has run-down or abandoned buildings on it. Since I'm keeping the weird pool-in-basement, I decided to re-name it "The Docks" and give the "abandoned factory" more of a naval feel (so it's going to be an abandoned shipyard) and placed the lot in another hood, closer to the coastline.
One of the other buildings though, the "game shop," has always reminded me much more of a church, so, that's what I've been turning it into.
http://i991.photobucket.com/albums/af35/SimulatedSpector/Hood%20pics/snapshot_0000001a_fa314007.jpg
Forgive the half-roof, I'm still re-modeling the thing, and I can't seem to get that last little piece to turn out quite right.
I'm not religious at all, but I do love old churches (for the art and architecture), and I thought it would be cool to have something like that in-game.

So, a thread on here has gotten me wanting to play a monastery set-up again. Only this time I want to do it "right," not half-assed as I usually do. *laughs* So, I'm setting one up as a subneighborhood of a neighborhood that I'm currently playing, to play when I get bored of that neighborhood and need a break from it. I thought I'd show off some of the lots for the place that I've built over the past couple of days. You'll notice a brick theme. *laughs*
Here's the church with the refectory (which is a kitchen/dining hall, for those not up on the building names in a standard monastery. :) ). The refectory seats 18 and has room for more if needed. This lot also has the monastery's fish pond:
http://i654.photobucket.com/albums/uu261/icads_sims/church.jpg
The church is an expansion/remodel of one that I downloaded forever ago, probably from MTS, but I don't remember who originally created it. Anyway, some inside shots, one of the church, one of the refectory:
http://i654.photobucket.com/albums/uu261/icads_sims/church2.jpg
(Now that I have M&G, I just the other day discovered that I have ceilings! I'm so excited!) The church isn't set up like a "normal" church with pews and such. Mostly because in my game the Sims meditate to pray, and they need floor space for that, so that's what it has. :)
Then, there's a little crafting mini-village within the monastery, where the moola is made. It has six separate 6x5 bungalows, one for each craft plus painting, and a garage area where up to 4 junked cars can be worked on at a time. I quite like how this lot turned out, looks-wise. I'm just hoping that it will actually work the way that I have planned. It's hard to capture from the outside, so have a top-down shot, too:

Now to build the cloister, the garden, the scriptorium, the school, the orphanage, the dormitories, the prior's house, the infirmary, the graveyard, etc., etc., etc.... :) This is what I get for not wanting to be half-assed. *laughs*

Hencing, I love that house. It's very nicely mountain-y, so it reminds me of lot of the houses around where I live. One of these days I need to figure out making not-just-flat lots so that I can make that sort of two-story house. :)
Me, I...was apparently in a Craftsman-y state of mind, so I built this li'l thang. And since it's been snowing on and off here for the past several days, I popped it into a neighborhood that has winter:

Here is a community lot I just finished building. The plan is to use it for weddings - the arch is over by the two climbing roses, and the tree that hangs towards the road - I generally use an invisible recolour for wedding arches because I have yet to find one I like!
The lot also has two bathrooms (with showers!) with a small vined pergola, a patio with a buffet, tables and chairs and a bottle of champagne, a pond with a bridge, a gazebo, a swingseat and a fountain. The wedding corner has the invisible arch, seating for six, and a fallen tree bench.
I basically set it up to be able to take good pictures of my sims when they get married there! I like taking photos of sim weddings :-D
Here are the pics. First the whole place, then a close-up of the pond and gazebo, then a close-up of the wedding corner, and finally a collage of some other pictures.

I'm looking forward to using this lot though! Won't be for a while though - the next generation of the family I'm currently playing (slightly obsessively!) are still a child and a toddler (and one bun in the oven!).......
**EDIT** I got to playtest this lot today, when Jared Brookes and Suzanne Gallagher Brookes got married there. I had Jared buy it as a business so that I could access Buy mode whilst they were there. The wedding went well! They invited 5 guests, and of course a bunch of randoms turned up too. I used Simlogical's formalwear sign to make everyone wear their formal outfits for the whole time they were there - I love that sign! I got lots of nice pictures (YAY!!), and all the guests had fun. The business went up to Level 2 whilst they were there, but I sold it right afterwards because I cheated them the money to buy it (and then got rid of it when they'd sold it).....

Thanks, Lauratje86. I currently have one female Elder, and one female Adult, as well as three toddlers living on the lot. The female Adult plays the role of 'Social Worker', and the Elder that of 'Nanny'. They are responsible for caring for the orphans until such time that they are adopted. That includes teaching them skills, such as walkign, talking, potty, homework ect. When I have decided which family is getting which orphan, I put them up for adoption using Simlogical's Teleporter shrub, so that when the family rings up to adopt, they get that child. Does that make sense? The Nanny & Social Worker are paid out of the Town Funds, and the Orphanage runs from Town Funds and the Adoption fees.
MsScrible- I haven't really played the Orphanage yet, but I'm expecting it to be busy! Thankfully there are two full time carers amongst the three toddlers, so that should help, and one of the toddlers will be adopted soon!

Some things are different because of the limitations, other ones because I wanted, and other ones because I am lazy and I didn't want to look at the picture all the time. The house is empty for now, but when I furnish it it will probably be unplayable. The outside is not finished yet.

So I got Apartment Life the other day. In "celebration," I'm working on putting together a new neighborhood. It's kind of urban, though more like "edge of urban, but not quite suburban yet." I used the big city buildings neighborhood deco and kind of built around them and for once in my life I'm actually trying to make this 'hood fully decorated with neighborhood deco and stuff. All of the lots are community lots (parks and "public buildings and such) or apartment buildings or lots where there is a shop below and living quarters for the owner of the shop above, or detached rental houses.
For the latter, I decided to be a bit lazy and use some of plasticbox's Newbie Road houses instead of starting from scratch. I completely redecorated/refurnished them and then turned them into rental houses by slapping an apartment door on them and fencing in the back yards if they had a back door. Over the past couple of days, I've converted a whole street of mostly 2x1-lot Newbie Road houses plus a couple of 2x2s. 12 lots total, so far. It turns out that they range in rent from $400-$4000 a week, which is just about what I was aiming for. And I thought I'd show a few of the results. As I said, I did not build these. plasticbox did; I just redecorated and added stuff to them.
#9, which is one of the high-rent ones, obviously. It has a little pool in back. It's just around the corner from the hospital, so I'll probably stick someone pretty high up in the medical career in here:
http://i654.photobucket.com/albums/uu261/icads_sims/9.jpg
#2, a teeny-weeny 2-bedroom one, but I think it's really cute. I put playground equipment in back, in anticipation of someone with a kid renting it.
http://i654.photobucket.com/albums/uu261/icads_sims/2.jpg
#4, my favorite. It's a funky 1-bedroom barn-style house with the bedroom up in the loft. And for once, I like how the interior came out; it's all in lighter/sage-y greens with oak furniture. I put a greenhouse and a non-greenhouse garden in back, so I'm going to stick a shy, destined-to-stay-single/childless Sim in here and let him/her garden his/her little heart out. :)
http://i654.photobucket.com/albums/uu261/icads_sims/4.jpg
And the cheapie, #7. "Yours" for $425 a week:
http://i654.photobucket.com/albums/uu261/icads_sims/7.jpg
It's itty-bitty, just one 4x4 bedroom, a 3/4 bath, and teeny kitchen/eating/living area. But it'll house a childless couple well enough. And it's cute. And it's cheap, cheaper than any apartment in town, even one of the trailers on the "bad" side of town by the nuclear plant.
Anyway, I'm having a strange amount of fun with this. It makes me wonder if I'll ever actually play this neighborhood rather than just building/decorating it.

This thread's on the second page again. Can't have that. :)
I needed an orphanage in one of my neighborhoods. Of necessity due to its purpose, the house needed to be rather large, with a number of large bedrooms. So, I decided that now was the time to recreate the house I grew up in, back in the Dark Ages. It was a big old farmhouse in the Midwest, originally built in the 1870s. And here it is:
The front:
http://i654.photobucket.com/albums/uu261/icads_sims/front-7.jpg
The back:
http://i654.photobucket.com/albums/uu261/icads_sims/back.jpg
It came out pretty dang close to accurate. About the only difference is that we had a carport, not just an open driveway, but I didn't feel like building one. And in fact, if the truth must be known I made that color siding a while ago with the express intention of one day building my growing-up house. And it came out danged close in its other particulars, too. Outside, that is. The inside is totally "Simmified," of course. :)

Wow- that rare thing, the house that looks smaller outside than inside. I was thinking "nice little place" and then I looked at the floorplan...it's freaking huge! And pretty.
I think you're going to want a walkway between the pond and the corner of the house. At least three tiles, so sims can pass each other and there's room to fish. I'm thinking of the narrow corner on one of my lots, where Ma was standing when she gave birth to the twins (the fridge was empty and so was the purse - plus, she likes fishing). She set Twin 1 down next to her in a square only she could reach, then gave birth to Twin 2, so I had to have her give Twin 2 to Pa and pick up Twin 1 herself. I really didn't like seeing Twin 1 on the cold hard ground so long!

Im not sure if this is the right place to ask these questions buut:
1) iCad & Tenielle - Where do you get the house numbers from..?
I use these: http://nene.modthesims.info/download.php?t=93932
I need to make me some recolors with some shadows. The lack of them bothers me...
Anyway, I lost my monastery that I was painstakingly building when the neighborhood it was attached to went kablooey and I had no recent back-up. (Bad Simmer!) So...I'm rebuilding it. I decided that I wanted some isolated hermit cottages scattered about, where some members will live in isolation.. They're all tiny, on 1x1 lots situated on the very edges of the monastery 'hood, and all have a little garden and/or a fruit tree for self-sufficiency. If I can swing it, I might give some a little pond for fishing, too, but there's not a whole lot of room on a 1x1 lot. Anyway, I'm making them in a range of rustic-nesses, which is not entirely "realistic," but I think I will get bored if they're all desperately primitive.
Here's one of the rudest so far, for a "hard-core" monk. It's medieval octagonal hovel-style (although the monastery is modern, not medieval). Cold stone floors. Rusted tin roof. Few windows. No electricity (Well, except that it has a fridge; I have the CC "root cellar" fridge, but it takes up too much room. So, I just pretend the fridge is an old-fashioned icebox.) Very uncomfortable furniture and just a mattress on the floor. And no plumbing. The entrance is on the side, because I like to be different sometimes:
http://i654.photobucket.com/albums/uu261/icads_sims/herm3.jpg
Here's one of the fluffier ones. It has no indoor plumbing or electricity, either, but it does have a few creature comforts. Like an actual bed, although it has no actual bedroom.
http://i654.photobucket.com/albums/uu261/icads_sims/herm1.jpg
I even went and created walls for that darn thing!
Here's the fluffiest so far. It has an actual bathroom and an actual bedroom and an actual kitchen area and actual electricity. So, I'm not really sure it's "appropriate" for a hermit. Maybe it should be called a guest cottage instead. But it was funky and fun to build. I usually don't think so vertically when building, but a 1x1 lot will force you do exactly that. So I'm keeping it. It's near the "ocean" (It's an island monastery), so the back has a screened patio and a little deck off the bedroom. It also has a fireplace in the bedroom upstairs, so the resident won't freeze in the winter.
http://i654.photobucket.com/albums/uu261/icads_sims/herm2.jpg
As a "bonus," here's a fun one from my desert neighborhood. It's only got one bedroom, but it's a fun one to "jazz up" for a rich single Sim. This lot's owned by a Sim in Show Business who's one step away from Icon, but she just refuses to roll a want for that last skill point she needs.
http://i654.photobucket.com/albums/uu261/icads_sims/des1.jpg
ETA @ pixiesim:
I don't usually like to offer "what I thinks" because it seems that usually I upset people when I'm not trying to do so, but...I feel like doing so.
I agree with Peni that it's one of those houses that looks smaller on the outside...although that could just be because the pics don't show the entire outside. :) It's a cute not-so-little house. I give you kudos for using the storybook doors effectively; whenever I try to use them, the place looks cheesy.
For my own playing preferences, the rooms are too large, especially the living room. Such big spaces can be hard to decorate. But like I said, that's my own playing preferences talking; I prefer smaller rooms, which results in smaller houses, and it works for me because I don't allow my Sims to have a lot of stuff.
From an aesthetic point of view...Well, I like mixed-media exteriors, for interest. The siding you used is very nice-looking, but used on the entire exterior, it looks a little monolithic. Maybe put some different exterior finishes in some places, like maybe on the forward- and rear-facing gable-roofed bits. Maybe a nice stone or a stucco in an eye-catching color? Also, I would vary your roof pitches a bit (assuming that you have the EPs that allow you to do so; I can't build without being able to alter individual roof pitches.). The "middle" hip roof is dominating the house, from what I can see in the pics. I'd either lower its pitch or raise the pitch of the gable roofs, whichever looks better, to give it a bit of balance. And/or, add dormers to the hipped roof, to break it up a bit.
But overall, I think it's a very cute lot with a "whimsical" kind of feel. I've attempted whimsical often, but I just can't seem to pull it off...

Basically its for when my favourite family(but my first sim who started the family of my cas sim) Danielle and her husband, Bruce Rauscher and her youngest child Leah, are going to live when there old. Leah, is going to look after them because they are a close family.
She has 3 adopted children(all adults) Adam, Louise and Laura... Jess (her own child who is in uni) and Leah her last and youngest child(toddler nearly child) she has seven grandchildren... Adele..Selena and Lexci(twins) Zac and Harry(twins) Mlissa and Jade. and Adele, oldest grandchild(child) has a dog called Nugget. and thats about it. haha. I love this family and been playing them for 4-5 weeks for like 10 hours a day.. I'm embarrsed to say I have filled loads of notepads planning everything ;D

I needed a pretty little house for the prior of my monastery sub-neighborhood. I didn't feel like building something entirely from scratch and I didn't want to reuse a house...so I decided to try my hand at a "Maxis Makeover" instead. My victim was the base-game lot bin house called the "Bonny Bungalow." IMO, it's the least-stupid and most potentially useful of the base-game lot bin houses. This is what it looks like, out of the box:
http://i654.photobucket.com/albums/uu261/icads_sims/mmoext_o.jpg
Except for that thing in the roof (It's like a dormer, only...not. WTF?), it's not too bad-looking for a Maxis house. Especially for only being able to use base-game stuff for finishes and windows/doors in addition to being stuck with 45-degree roof pitches. But since I don't have those constraints and I have a ton of CC at my disposal with the ability to make more if necessary...here's my made-over exterior:
http://i654.photobucket.com/albums/uu261/icads_sims/mmoext.jpg
Play spot the differences! ;)
Next, this is the original floor plan:

Again, it's far less stupid than many of Maxis's floor plans, but it does have its oddities, IMO. Namely the bathrooms. Dears, if you're going to make a "jack and jill" style bathroom, at least give SOME consideration to privacy in case of someone walking in while someone else is sitting on the toilet or is in the tub. I know that Sims don't really care, but...I care. Plus, if that bathroom becomes a plain old standard hall bath, then there's no need for the silly (double-doored!) half-bath in a single-resident house. So...
Here are my fixes, plus the furnishing/decor:
http://i654.photobucket.com/albums/uu261/icads_sims/mmofp.jpg
So there you have it. It's not particularly monk-y, I know, but for my purposes that's OK. I wanted something comparatively luxurious and very different-from-the-other lots in style for the prior. And this was kind of fun to do. I might take a shot at a more-stupid Maxis house at some point. Heck, I might even resurrect the deleted Pleasantview et. al. in my game, just so that I have more stupid to choose from. ;)

Thanks. Thanks a lot, iCad. I just restarted Pleasantview and now I'm going to want to remake all the houses.
Yer welcome! ;)
I mentioned resurrecting Pleasantview et. al. in order to have stupid houses to redo? Well, who needs them when for some reason I haven't gotten around to deleting Belladonna Cove yet? I'm telling you, Belladonna Cove fresh out of the box isn't very...well, bella. :)
Like there's this "charmer," 319 Bella Park Rd.:
http://i654.photobucket.com/albums/uu261/icads_sims/319bella_origext.jpg
What the hell is that thing? Yes, let's sit the entire house on the stupid lattice foundation. Looks sound to me! Plus, I just hate the lattice foundation in general. It's fugly. And then there's the fact that the deck/porch thing appears to be floored with...gravel? And then there's the placement of the windows, not to mention the general lack of them. Seriously, there are six windows on the whole fairly big house, and one of them is just a privacy window. I had more windows when I lived in a dinky little one-bedroom apartment in NYC. Even if EA was trying to keep it under $20,000, this one costs $18-something out of the box, so they could have added a couple more windows, for heaven's sake. Instead, the lack of windows creates endless, unbroken vistas of boring white siding. And dark interiors. Peachy! And then there's the asinine shape of the house in general, which in turn necessitates a stupid-looking roof. Ya just gotta love it, eh?
Now let's have a gander at the floor plan, shall we? Downstairs and upstairs we have:
http://i654.photobucket.com/albums/uu261/icads_sims/319bella_origfp.jpg
Uh-huh. Well, the asinine shape of the house sure doesn't help matters, does it? And yes, let's make a fairly windowless house have nice dark walls and floors, too. Swell. And, pray tell, why have an actual door into the kitchen/dining area? I don't think I've ever been in a real house that didn't have an open arch or arches between the living and dining areas. Are they trying to create claustrophobic houses? And then there's the secondary bedroom upstairs with its huge-normous bedroom-sized walk-in closet, while what I'm assuming is supposed to be the master (since it has a bed)...has no closet at all. Yeah, whatever.
Well, anyway. Enough bitching. Here's what I came up with:
The exterior:
http://i654.photobucket.com/albums/uu261/icads_sims/319bella_newext.jpg
I actually tried not to change too much; I basically made myself not change the footprint of the house except to alter the porch...which became big. And wraparound. I also added the side porch, which steps down to the also-added driveway. Finally, I added a fireplace, which sort of changes the footprint but not in any structural way. Basically, I often add them because their chimneys add roofline interest; I hardly ever have Sims actually use them.
Now, the floor plan, with bonus furnishing/decorating, at which I generally suck:
http://i654.photobucket.com/albums/uu261/icads_sims/319bella_newfp.jpg
I kept one of the diagonal exterior walls downstairs, so as not to change the original footprint. (Squaring off the other wall didn't do that, since there was already a deck there. Cheating! ;) ) Upstairs, both front corners have been squared off because diagonal walls just create wasted space. Downstairs, not too much changed, except moving the stairs, making the bathroom a standard half-bath, and partitioning the kitchen from the dining area a bit and splitting up the living area a bit with half-walls.
Upstairs, I moved the master bedroom over to the other side of the house and expanded the existing bath into the added front dormer, making it a private master bathroom. What was the master bedroom became two smaller secondary bedrooms. The added rear dormer became the full family bath. I am officially unhappy with the long and skinny nature of the master bedroom, but widening it by a tile, which would have made me happier, threw off the exterior symmetry too much for my likings, so...it is what it is. I offset the odd shape a bit by partitioning off a chunk of it as a sitting/reading area. Works well enough, I think.
Of course, the result of all of this is that this house is no longer a starter by any stretch of the imagination...but I don't care about that. :) With all the furnishing and such, it now has a price tag of close to $70,000.

Awwww, I feel all fuzzy over the love for my remade Belladonna Cove house. I'm in the midst of ripping apart another, 120 Siena Street, so I'm sure a post about that one will be forthcoming. In the meantime...
OK, so it's not really a house, but it is a...uh, building. After taking quite a few abortive stabs at it, I finally decided on what I wanted the stupid cathedral thing in my monastery subneighborhood to look like. Which is good because I think the monks were tired of praying on a half-constructed lot exposed to weather while I poked at it. (But hey! It was kind of realistic. Cathedrals ain't built in a day! ;) ) So here it be.
First, front-and-center, from ground level:
http://i654.photobucket.com/albums/uu261/icads_sims/church1.jpg
I do love that front door. I think macarossi made it...
A closer-up 3/4 kind of view:
http://i654.photobucket.com/albums/uu261/icads_sims/church4.jpg
And then slightly aerial from the back:
http://i654.photobucket.com/albums/uu261/icads_sims/church2-1.jpg
I wanted it to look non-traditional, without a steeple or any medieval-like towers and/or flying buttresses (because this is not supposed to be or look like a medieval and/or traditional monastery), but I also wanted it to retain a generally cruciform layout so that it would be sort of recognizable as a church, even without Christian statuary. So, the center of it went non-traditionally octagonal, but it also has four "arms" to give it a cruciform feel...although in this case it's more like an equal-armed Maltese cross than a standard Catholic cross. Three of the "arms" are chapels, one fitted-out for weddings for main-neighborhood couples who "want" to get married in a church...for a fee, of course. ;) And somewhere along the way it acquired a dome that gave it a faintly Greek Orthodox feel.
Here's a general interior view from central square of columns the thing has. The pic shows one of the non-wedding chapels:
http://i654.photobucket.com/albums/uu261/icads_sims/church3.jpg
Basically, for my purposes, the place had to have a lot of sitting-on-the-floor room because when playing a monastery, I use the game's meditation self-interaction as a substitute for prayer, once a given monk has enough Logic points to do so. (Until they do, the statues scattered around, made by KevinsHope, have various prayer interactions.) In the game, Sims meditate sitting on the ground/floor. They won't sit in a pew or kneel or even just stand to do so. So...there we are. :) So only the wedding chapel has "pews." The rest is basically a floor and a half of very open floor space, enough to "seat"...a ton of meditating monks. It's quite the sight, really.

First...Yay, people like my cathedral. I was quite proud of it. :) I was thinking of mucking around with a copy of it to make it a more real-world kind of church as opposed to one in which the inside is designed to accommodate a bunch of Sims sitting on the floor. It'd require a bit of CC that I don't have, though... But thanks so much for the love. *heartfarts at everyone*
Next, @ Nymphy:
I've always had an interest in architecture. I wanted to be an architect when I grew up, but the math done killed me. Higher math and I are not on friendly terms. So now, I just like to draft houses using CAD (Hence, my user name) for fun. Not surprisingly, the aspect of the game that first drew me to it was indeed the building aspect. Trouble is, in many ways it's MUCH harder to build something decent-looking in the game than it is in CAD. In CAD, once you learn how to do so, you can design and draw with absolutely no constraints whatsoever, especially not if you're blithely ignoring real-world physics. But not so in Sims! Took me for-freakin'-ever to make a decent-looking roof...and roofs still confound me sometimes. I've had to abandon entire buildings because I couldn't get the roof to be not-stupid. (And for the love of God, unless you're building a very simply-shaped house, never EVER use Autoroof. The result is 100% guaranteed to be stupid.)
Anyway, for your questions, I can suggest a few things, with the proviso that I tend to build so that the result is a compromise between realism and playability, with the priority usually skewed more toward the former. I understand that, for instance, a garage-sized bathroom makes a certain amount of sense from a playing perspective, but it just completely turns off my aesthetic sense, and I refuse to create a house that has such things. I'd rather have to occasionally relieve a traffic jam using move_objects than have unrealistically gigantic bathrooms (unless it's a decadent master bath, of course) and 4-tile-wide hallways and such. My suggestions are geared toward that. So:
1) Instead of immediately trying to come up with your own original designs, which can be very daunting, try to recreate in the game as closely as you can the house you currently live in or one that you have lived in/spent a lot of time in in the past. Try to furnish it as closely to how the real house is/was furnished in terms of relative sizes of the pieces of furniture, leaving enough room for the furniture to be accessed. This will give you a feel for realistic room layouts and sizes. (Again, I know some players like to have cavernous rooms to fill with skilling objects and grand pianos and God knows what else, but as I said I prefer realism. If a family doesn't have room for the grand piano they think they need, then it's time for a bigger house. Or they just have to suck it up and go to a community lot to get their skill points. That's the way I play.) Anyway, I think it's much easier to recreate a building you're already very familiar with than to try to imagine something from scratch. If nothing else, it's good practice that you're likely to learn a lot from. If you do this sort of thing enough times, you get a feel for where various rooms "should" be and how big they should be and where it makes sense to have a run of stairs to the second floor and all that stuff. And THEN you can experiment from there and be more creative. And it doesn't have to be wasted time. Generally, ANY floor plan can become any style of house. Style is a function of external details like finishes and roof structure and what-have-you and internal details like furniture and decoration style and wall finish choices and such.
2) You might want to try your hand at making over a few Maxis houses. That way, the basic structure is already there for you; your job is simply to de-stupid that structure. (Because, trust me, ALL Maxis houses are stupid to some degree.) And some of them once de-stupid-ed might fit into your scheme for your neighborhood. (Cottages, yes? I'm thinking quaint little whitewashed houses with lots of flowers, although I know that in the UK, some of those old Georgian "cottages" are, in fact, mansions. Anyway, if the former is what you're thinking, you might want to have a look at the "Tiny Tudor" house in the lot bin, assuming that you haven't dumped all your lot bin houses. Some of the houses in Veronaville might suit you well, too.) Remodeling a house is easier than coming up with and building one from scratch, but you're likely to learn a lot from the process. Especially about roofs. (Can you tell that roofs in the game frustrate the hell out of me? I thought you could... ;) )
3) When it comes to building not-all-the-same houses, I'd say that house plan sites (and books/magazines, if you have/can buy any. Take a look in your local library if you don't want to buy.) are a good place to go. They will usually have MANY different houses in a certain style that you can pilfer ideas from or even try to recreate verbatim, if you want to. You can always see floor plans on those sites (and you can copy the images to your hard drive that you can print out or, if you play in windowed mode, that you can look at on-screen as you build in the game) and a photo or rendering of at least the front of the house. Sometimes they give you front and/or rear elevation drawings, too, which give you an idea of what the roof and window layout and heights are supposed to look like. Of course, real houses have things like laundry and utility rooms that are not necessary in the game, but those things can usually be subverted for a different purpose or deleted entirely. I think I learned the most about building in the game by trying to recreate as best I could real-life house plans.
And...there's a lot more I could say, but this probably isn't the place. Feel free to PM me and pick my brain. In the meantime...Look! Topic!
Speaking of making over Maxis houses...Meet 120 Siena Street in Belladonna Cove, as it looked before I fatally assaulted it with a sledgehammer:
http://i654.photobucket.com/albums/uu261/icads_sims/120siena_origext.jpg
This one is plain and boring but at least not asinine-looking on the outside. And I give it points for having a side entry, since I rather like side entries. Still...I dunno...EA's attempt at what I think is supposed to be log or at least rustic-wood-siding walls just isn't doing it for me. (Must remember to finish my log wall project...) And why doesn't EA ever cover entry porches/decks? I mean, I know that weather doesn't really affect Sims, but still, it bugs me. It's a missed opportunity for a bit of realism, especially since roofs don't cost anything. (Which in itself is stupid; in real life, the roof of a house costs way more than its walls. ) Aside from that, this one's not too terrible on the outside, for a pre-made starter.
On the inside, though....
http://i654.photobucket.com/albums/uu261/icads_sims/120siena_origfp.jpg
OK, you've got a 2-bath house, but you only put fixtures in one, no doubt to save money to make this a starter. Fine, but...Why, exactly, do you fixture the master bath, the one that you have to go through the bedroom to get to, rather than the family bath? Seriously, I don't get it. I mean, I know Sims generally don't care about such things, but given that the family bath is right next to the master, I just don't get the choice that was made.
That aside, I'm not feeling the big, square great room attached to the comparatively long and skinny bedroom "wing" configuration. Apparently, EA is obsessed with long and skinny rooms, at least here in Belladonna Cove. (And maybe in other neighborhoods; the other Maxis neighborhoods have long since been deleted in my game. I don't remember the layouts of any of the houses.) And on a very trivial note: Why put the trash can where EA put it when there's a perfectly good and much more logical spot at the end of the counters? Seriously, I just don't get the way EA's collective brain works sometimes. Like, let's not discuss their random closet placement policy, hmmm? Not to mention their random window placement. Speaking of which: Again, we have a house with not many windows and dark walls and floors. I don't get it.
Anyway, here's what I did to this poor thing's exterior, front and back:
http://i654.photobucket.com/albums/uu261/icads_sims/120siena_newext.jpg
On this one, I deemed it OK to make small(ish) changes to the house's footprint. Why? Because. :) So I made the skinny part wider by one tile and then created a further 1-tile bump-out in the middle to break up that loooooong-ass left-hand wall. This in turn better balanced the big, square great room area (which did not change in size) and reduced the Roof Boringness Factor by 4. And, as usual, I added a fireplace for roof line (and in this case front-facade) interest purposes. I altered a bit and then covered the side entry porch. Because, as I said, it needed to be done. And I slapped new siding on the sucker and added rock trim. Pretty much every house I've ever built/decorated has more than one kind of finish on its exterior, for visual interest's sake, and this one is no exception. I fenced in the back yard and added a back sundeck and patio, too, which can be accessed from either the dining area or the master bedroom. As you can see, the patio sports a sunken hot tub. I'm really not big on pools at all, but I do like to give my Sims hot tubs.
And the new floor plan, with furnishing/decorating for 4:
http://i654.photobucket.com/albums/uu261/icads_sims/120siena_newfp.jpg
In real life, as a person who likes open space and natural light, I like big, open, well-lit great rooms with nice views and all that jazz. But I have to say that I don't really like them for Sims purposes. I don't know why, but I feel like I lose track of Sims in large rooms. Plus, I have this strange real-life aversion to having kitchens in full, plain view when walking in the main entry door, and this bleeds over into my Sim-houses. So, I basically bisected the original great room with a wall in order to fully separate the kitchen/dining and living areas. And the bedrooms became wider, of course. And the front one acquired a li'l bump-out too. Because I like interesting shapes like that.
As usual, green invaded the interior, a nice, pleasant, springy yellow-green along with a greeny beige. Green is my favorite color. I love all shades of it, dark to light, cool to warm, and inevitably I end up decorating with it, both in real life and in Sim-houses. I can't NOT decorate with green. Of course, in this case, green is on the outside, too.
Meanwhile, over on the bedroom side, widening the structure and reducing the size of the bathrooms meant that I could create a niche-y hall area from which the bedrooms and the family bath are accessed. It bugs me when a bedroom is directly accessed from the living room, and in the original floor plan, both of the bedroom doors opened right into the great room. DO NOT WANT! Widening the bedroom wing allowed me to fix that. And lookit! I used Maxis floor and wall tile in the bathrooms. Shocking! :)
And of course, all of this futzing made this one not a starter, too. Its new price tag: Around about $60,000, which could be reduced by more than 10% simply by removing the hot tub. (Dang, that's an expensive hot tub!) Anyway, next I'll try keeping a starter a starter, but it's doubtful that I'll succeed. I suck at under-$20,000 houses without using unrealistically-cheap CC...

For Riverblossom Hills, I do all my houses in the Country theme. The challenge for me is using different combinations of the Country-themed wall and floor coverings so they don't all look alike.
In Belladonna Cove, it gets interesting...the neighborhood has different sections, like Socialite, Tech, etc. I won't build a Gearhead house next to a Socialite house.

Y'know, I have it in my head to try to Sim either Canterbury Cathedral or Chartres Cathedral, but it would be a massive project requiring building techniques that are quite beyond me. Salisbury is beautiful, too, though. As is Lincoln. So many pretty real-life cathedrals to choose from... *sigh*
Anyway, since this thread is on the second page again...must fix!
I felt like building something with hipped roofs, since I generally tend to favor gables. No one likes a rut, right? The French Provincial style uses steeply-pitched hipped roofs heavily, one might even say gratuitously, so that was my starting point. I didn't want to create something actually French Provincial because in order to do that right you'd need to be able to make things like sweeping curly/curved roofs and walls, and you'd need interesting roof embellishments and proper-looking wall finishes and such, none of which I have. But I did look at some pics of French Provincial-style houses in order to get some general shape/layout ideas, and then this was what I came up with. I call it "Pardon My French." Otherwise known as 164 Dahlia Drive, located in the well-off suburbs of one of my 'hoods, where the streets all have flower names.
Anyway, here she is, front and back:
http://i654.photobucket.com/albums/uu261/icads_sims/french1.jpg http://i654.photobucket.com/albums/uu261/icads_sims/french2.jpg
I love side-entry garages. Anyway, as you can see, it has a lot more interest on the back than on the front, mostly because the garage takes up most of the front facade, and it's a big, fat square. Snooze! But the place is big, bigger than it looks from the front. It's amazing what you can fit on a 3x3 lot if you set your mind to it. It has four bedrooms (plus a study and a den, one or both of which could be used as bedrooms if needed), and three full baths. And as if that wasn't enough, it'd be fairly easy create a second story if one needed even more room. I didn't furnish it, but here's the floor plan:

This house came about because i can never seem to find a Beach Lot that fits my needs, I think i find one then i put it in game and i think, Its not ideal for me, So i decided to build one of my own, I'm real good at decorating but Landscaping isn't my Forte so i don't think its as good as some of the lots shown on this thread but i gave it a go and asteitcally i'm pleased with its outside apperance although i'm questioning having a helipad on the lot.

This house was orignally all blue (What was i thinking lol?), literally all blue, looked like a blue blob in neigbourhood view, but it burned my retnas after a while (Neon blue= bad idea) so i changed it to a light wood colour and i think it fits the familly better.

I Put some plants on the back to make it look a bit prettier and hide the harsh terrian you seem to get with beach lots. No way is this lot the best lot evarr made but its good for me standards and i put some effort in because I adore the family (a dad and his daughter/I'll picture them and post them when i have time).

That's a sweet little house. I like its simple shape and the windows are very pretty. And the brick is a nice choice. It adds color without being glaring. Landscaping isn't my forte, either, so yours looks good to me. The only thing I might suggest is replacing the columns holding it up with "columns" made out of walls. Back of your remaked 120 Siena Street (http://i654.photobucket.com/albums/uu261/icads_sims/120siena_newext.jpg) is adorable!
Give me some of your building skills, please! :(
I really wish my gardens/backyards looked better...
There's one of my remaked Maxis homes: it used to be this big with red siding and porch all around the home. I turned it into 2 apartments. On the photos I've shown the one in ground floor. My version named:
"The heaven of green"

I think it looks quite nice with the columns. Making 'wall columns' would make it look too boxy, IMO.
Really nice make-over, Liv. ^^

@Liv94: I really don't think you need any of my building skills. Your Maxis re-make is quite lovely, and not just because I'm a total sucker for green in all its forms. I, on the other hand, am envious of your decorating skills. Decorating and landscaping are just not my things. *sigh* It's a good thing I don't upload decorated houses.
Anyway, I've been at it again. But first: Warning: Urban-Style Building = NOT My Forte!
I've been poking at redecorating the "downtown" (which is really a shopping district) of one of my neighborhoods, trying to go for a more cohesive look in terms of building materials. I decided to go with a brick theme. (Well, except for the deco buildings, of course...unless I can recolor 'em...hmmmm...) Anyway, we'll see how far I get before I get utterly bored...
I wanted to have some residential lots with a smallish shop (to be run as a "home business") downstairs and living space for the family upstairs. I also wanted them to be on 1x2 lots so that I could put a number of copies of this building side-by-side to create a "row" kind of feeling, even though they're all detached because I can't be bothered to make them actual rowhouses. This is what I came up with:
http://i654.photobucket.com/albums/uu261/icads_sims/resbus_ext.jpg
It's certainly not the best thing ever. Probably because I made it hard on myself by going long and skinny. Still, I think it will work well enough for my purposes.
Here's the shop (set up as a grocery store, obviously) and the downstairs bedroom:
http://i654.photobucket.com/albums/uu261/icads_sims/resbus_fp1.jpg
The rest of the living space upstairs:
http://i654.photobucket.com/albums/uu261/icads_sims/resbus_fp2.jpg
Sorry for the zoomed-out-ness. It's the long-and-skinniness. But look! It's NOT decorated in green!
...Well, OK, it's a greeny-blue. Shut up! Anyway, I was surprised that this came out to a hair under $36,000, including the grocery-store fixtures, which are expensive. That was a nice surprise. :) The future owner of this place won't have to go too steeply in debt in order to buy it, since he has $16000 on hand...

@iCad: Thanks man, I feel so honored :)
Minority of my homes are well-decorated as the flat in 'The heaven of green'- placing everything on the OMPSs and things like that are very tiring for me. But if I have some nice plants to place in the corner of the room or pictures to hang on the wall - why not? ;)
Don't like landspacing? Nor do I :) I've never tried it at all. I like building not complicated bungalow houses without fundaments, this is the reason ;)
I think your urban-style home looks quite good :D
From outside it's really lovely. I like it's look - simple and modern. Brick suits well :) Without high fence house wouldn't be as nice as it is now, too.
I think that indoors it could be more colourful. And decorations like plants or framed pictures would make it be non-so-severed. Personally I don't use many carpets in my sims homes (althought in my real one they're almost everywhere xD) and it's strange for me (but maybe I'll get used to? who knows...)
@Nymphy01: in front it looks nice. I like the colours of the building. They look great with sandy ground :)
I really really like this wooden floor, but imo in kitchen light tiles would be better.
On this (http://imageshack.us/m/585/2070/snapshot0000002b3adc3d3.jpg) picture I can see something in the desk. It's creepy :(
Try to use pastel colours - houses with them aren't boring or monotonous :) And try not to mix styles - Maxis with modern, shiny and realistic objects from your Downloads folder won't make a thing.
I looked at your thread and I think you should take more photos from the game. Your houses definetly need some decorations! Maybe potted plants? ;) And try to search for some nice paintings - there're loads of them on the Internet.
I wish your photos would be frapsed ;)
Good luck :)
I'm not a pro as you've seen, I'm just used to telling my opinion on various things ;) I hope it would help, even a little :)

@ Nym: Very cute little house! I like the exterior finishes that you picked very well. Brick is good for desert lots, and the stuccoes you picked coordinate nicely with the the brick you picked. The structure is interestingly-shaped, as is the roof. Nice job! :) For the decorating...totally not my forte. :) I'd say that Liv94 gave you some very good advice.
Speaking of which...@Liv94: Yeah, I'm not much of a decorator, I'm afraid. And really, for that particular lot, it's meant to be owned by a particular Sim who only had a certain amount of cash-on-hand, so I didn't want to send him TOO steeply in debt. I like to decorate houses and upgrade furniture and fixtures with the money that that the family makes while I play them. But as they do that, I will definitely keep your advice in mind. Thank you. :)
And now...another Maxis makeover. Yay. This time it's the "City Center Lofts" from Belladonna Cove. I regret that I have no "before" pics...because I forgot to take them, but hopefully you know what it looks like.
I have to say that I hate most of EAxis's pre-made apartment buildings. For the most part, the individual apartments are stupidly-designed with tons and tons of wasted space and the decorating leaves much to be desired. But I actually like this building very much in terms of its layout and such. The individual apartments are, to me, realistically cramped; they remind me strongly of one that I lived in in NYC when I was in school. So, since I've been rather lazy about making my own apartment buildings, I've tended to stuff multiple iterations of this building into my "downtowns." The only thing I don't really like about the building is its decoration. The outside is blah and the inside is...Well, "garish" would be a polite word, I think. And, IMO, much too dark for cramped apartments.
So, here's the new exterior:
http://i654.photobucket.com/albums/uu261/icads_sims/aptnewext.jpg
(HAH! Never mind the chair sitting out front; it must not have made it all the way to "delete" when I was removing all the furniture the building comes with. )
I changed very little on the outside. I changed the top roof trim from a drab grey concrete fence to a half-wall for matchiness and added a couple of balconies with contrasting railings. I replaced the columns that were holding up the building with "wall columns" because it just looks better/sturdier, IMO. I changed the finish from...whatever it was on the original, some sort of blue-grey corrugated material, to brick in order to go with the theme I'm working on. You can't really see it, but I got rid of the "fire escape" on the side because I think it's ugly, and I didn't replace it. I put in a pool underneath the building on one side and a mock parking area on the other, with a couple of non-functional deco cars. (I didn't know if cars owned by different playable residents on the lot would actually work, so I just went with deco for the look.) I changed the window/exterior door color and replaced the privacy windows on the side with CC ones from a completer set for the New Gear City windows. (People who make window/door completer sets are my gods, indeed. :) I seriously cannot build without the stuff they've made.)
Now, on to the inside. Here are the downstairs and upstairs apartments, respectively:
http://i654.photobucket.com/albums/uu261/icads_sims/aptnewfps.jpg
I changed nothing structurally. (Well, OK, I added a few half-walls and one-tile full walls here and there, usually to better separate kitchens from living areas.) Basically, I picked a color scheme for each apartment and furnished/decorated it from there. Interior decorating is not my forte, but I think this looks hella better than EA's "decorating." And when all was said and done, the rents went down across the board. I don't know why that's so because for the most part I used more expensive stuff than EA and the "square footage" of each apartment didn't change, but...whatever. I still haven't figured out how the game calculates rent. In any case, the rent range is about $400-$1650 per week now.
ETA, because I totally missed it: @Aryxa:
I think you've got a good start here, although I think it's a bit boxy. Part of the reason why I'm not fond of playing legacies is that you kind of build the house as you go along, so I've always ended up with bizarre boxy things as I've added rooms, so I can definitely understand boxiness in a legacy house. :) I might suggest adding some bump-outs here and there just to break up the boxiness a bit. Maybe add some bayed areas on the front or even on the side(s), depending on the floor plan? They can be a nice place to put a sofa, creating a nice sunny reading spot or what-have-you, and they add exterior interest as well. Also, if the floor plan allows, you could maybe add a balcony on the horizontal part of the second floor that would overlook the parking area in front. That would add some exterior interest as well.
I would also suggest changing the "middle" roof to a wide hipped roof. I think it would connect the two front-facing gables better than another front-facing gable, although you might have to mess with the slopes a bit to get it to look right. If you were to add a balcony, you could also make the roof cover all or part of it, if you wanted to. Finally, I might change either the window color or the exterior finish to match the windows/doors better. I'm guessing you want the oak doors/windows so that they match your interiors, and I can definitely understand that. I just don't think the grey brick with the white quoining is the best choice to go with it. Maybe some stone instead? I don't know what you have in the way of CC, but the Maxis "River Rock" wall tends to look pretty nice with oak windows. And you can always mix up your exterior finishes, too. If you can find a good combination, it can totally make your exterior.
And that's all I've got. :)

Yeah, that's a very neat make over. I have a soft spot for that apartment block. For a premade building, I've always though it had a small sense of grittiness like I hadn't seen before. I don't know, it has a sort of industrial feeling to it... As much as you can get without custom content, of course.
Anyway. I've been toying with the idea of beginning a new, dystopian neighborhood. You know, 1984 inspired and all. Everybody wearing the same clothes, a leader, etc... I tried to build this as a sort of landmark, like the headquarters for the ruling Party.
I know it's dull, cold and completely uninteresting, but without custom content everything I can do to create a sense of threat is make it big. And geometrically simple.

To compensate for that building's horridness, here's a house from another neighborhood (The Remake of Sinanda, which I call Sinanda 2)

Thought I might try to get into posting a few pictures in this forum now and then.
My current hood presently has mostly multi-family housing because it isn't in full swing yet. I may have up to three families in the same household - more if they are ex-students/graduates. This is so I can get businesses started and have help with raising the spawn as none of my upper-class sims have earned their fortunes yet.
This house is planned for the mayor, although I still haven't decided on a new title for that position yet and "mayor" just isn't working for me. (Yeah, I ignore and override maxis stuff and make up my own terms a LOT.) I just made a bunch of new custom townies and want to make some playable. The mayor has a kid, so she has to live with another family in order to have help with her kid. So, while I was creating sims, I created another single mother with a kid that will either never get a job or will run a business.
That's the explanation for the size of this lot. Plenty of room for gardening. Space for a sufficient garden is not an option because the mayor is a public servant, and as such, she basically works for the Queen and must provide provisions for the royal family. There's a pond of a nice size, space for a playground for the spawn, and semi-covered stables for the horses. (My 'hood is medieval-ish/fantasy so I don't have cars or garages.) The house has 4+ bedrooms and 4 full baths so the mayor can entertain a lot without every sim jockeying for bladder relief.
So, with that bit of preamble out of the way, on with the pictures.
Front of the house.
http://i268.photobucket.com/albums/jj7/cheshirekatttt/Ora%20di%20Sognare%20Island/Houses/PHouseforMayor-front.jpg
Back of the house. The lot is only partially landscaped because I prefer to have my sims earn most of their decor as well as their furnishings. The inside is empty, but I'll leave it up to everyone's imagination how the house is designed on the inside. But I will say that the mayor and her child have their bedrooms on the third floor. The little room on the top floor (fourth floor) is for storage. The first floor has a formal dining room, and within the house there is adequate space for a music/pool table room, and space for exercise equipment.

First floor has an open floor plan and one full bath. Double door front entry and single door to easily access the covered veranda, barbecue area, and garden.
Second floor has two full restrooms, one bathroom is connected to the master bedroom as a private bath, and one family/music/game room. Perfect for the single sim that loves to entertain and hopes to find the One sim to start a family with. No need to move with the sound of little feet running about because the family room is large enough to convert into a bedroom for several young ones, but there is also plenty of room to expand.

I love both of those two houses, cheshirekatt. I wish I could build "medievally" as well; it just doesn't seem to be my forte, I'm afraid. So, I guess I stick to modern. *sigh*
Speaking of which:
Plain and simple Garak. Uh, I mean, plain and simple cottage thing. (Sorry, as an avid Star Trek: Deep Space Nine fan, I cannot say the phrase "plain and simple" without adding the word "Garak." :lol )
Anyway, here you go:
http://i654.photobucket.com/albums/uu261/icads_sims/cott2.jpg
Here's a bit of a closer-up of the actual house part:
http://i654.photobucket.com/albums/uu261/icads_sims/cott1.jpg
This is the home of a neighbor of mine, which is of course modified for Sims purposes. I decided to build it because I needed a house for a new rural farming/fishing household, and I thought the style would fit well, style-wise in the neighborhood. I had originally started to do a makeover of the MacGregor farm from Riverblossom Hills, but it became so unrecognizable that it couldn't really be called a "makeover" so much as "I built an all-new house in the space where the old house was. And I ended up not liking what I did, anyway. :P Plus, the neighbor who owns this house in real life graciously allowed me to climb up on the roof of his garage to take some pictures of the roofing material which were ultimately used to create textures for the roof that's on this house as well as the "urban" one I posted before as well as 13 other colors of it that I made. So, I figured it was only fair to Sim his house...or...uh, something like that.
In any case, yeah, that's it. Plain little box in red and white with large dormers and a nice breezeway connecting the detached garage to the house. It actually has a fair amount of room inside, especially since it's essentially a 12x12 box with things stuck on it. It has four bedrooms, two baths. None of the bedrooms are huge, granted, but...Hey, there are four of them, and all will accommodate a double bed if you do some squeezing and don't put any other furniture in the room. Stuff in a few bunk beds and this one'll house 8 if they don't mind (really) close quarters.
I'm not at all done with the inside yet. I REALLY need to make/find some kitchen tile. I have tons of bathroom tile and hardly any kitchen-y tile. I need some to coordinate better with my massive granite countertop collection. But, done or not, here are the floor plans:

iCad, I really like the overall layout of that house. Inspired me to create something similar that is almost done now. I'll probably post it later, but for now, I will post another house I have done.
Front. This is a 3 bedroom home on a modest 4x3 lot. Fish in your private pond from the sunny bank or while resting beneath the shade of a large, well-established tree. Outdoor entertaining will have just a touch of class with a paved patio, easily accessed from the kitchen door. The patio is paved with local stones and the stonework extends to the front of the house and fenced for semi-privacy.
http://i268.photobucket.com/albums/jj7/cheshirekatttt/Ora%20di%20Sognare%20Island/Houses/GHouse-front.jpg
Another view of the front. The first floor features a spacious reception foyer, formal dining, one full bathroom, and cozy family/living room. The second floor features two small bedrooms for the spawn, large master bedroom with fireplace, full bathroom, and a large music/party room.
http://i268.photobucket.com/albums/jj7/cheshirekatttt/Ora%20di%20Sognare%20Island/Houses/GHouse-front2.jpg
Roof. Located at the end of a quiet road just outside the castle walls with the ocean view on the other side, privacy is a privilege that you can buy when you buy this house. Priced just under 35,000, it will certainly sell quickly to the family wanting a life of fresh air and self-sufficiency .

The layout of this house was inspired by iCad's most recent image posts. The exterior and interior obviously look different, but I was thinking of iCad's house, so credit to iCad for the inspiration. This house is set up much like I suppose a boarding house would be, but is also suitable for a family or two to live in. All the bedrooms are large enough for two single beds. Some will even fit a couple double beds without much space leftover for other furniture.
The garage is where the stables are, which lead to the horse corral out in the backyard. The lot has a pond and garden plots, landscaping, combined kitchen/dining, foyer, 3 baths (one downstairs, two upstairs), a covered courtyard, fireplace, and a lot of room to expand, garden, have parties, etc. It is a 30x60 lot.

Courtyard. The courtyard is between the main house on the right and the stables on the left, can be used for outdoor dining, grilling, and hanging out. A door leads to the courtyard from the kitchen. iCad had a walkway connecting the main house to the garage. This house has an open (fenced) walkway to the stables from the living room. The courtyard will be partially fenced in, but I thought it would be easier to get pictures before finishing with the fences and other landscaping that would block too much.

Because I use a lot of brown, earthy colors, I tried to lighten the shadows a bit while still keeping the "old" and semi-dark look. Washed out is not a good look. Not easy since I had not added any lighting yet. But I think the pictures are clear enough for you to enjoy.
Edited to add: Saturnfly, I really like all the flowers in the front of your hosue. Makes it very colorful and welcoming.

Cheshirekat: I'm so glad my house could spark some ideas for you. Although, your house is WAY more complex than mine. I do like to mess with breezeways and interior courtyards, though. It's nice to have something a little different.
Saturnfly: That's an adorable little house. I love all the flowers!
Nissun, I'm insanely jealous of both your skillz and your game's graphics. Can I ask, what sky are you using? It's lovely, almost like aurorae, and I like to take pics of my lots with pretty skies like that. :) I also loved the other buildings you posted. The style is very unique and, again, having a cohesive style like that for a neighborhood is very cool. Can't keep it up, myself; I tend to get bored. Plus, I don't have the CC for it, anyway. But I LOVE seeing that sort of thing in other people's creations.
Anyway, I just put this up for download on my LJ, since it doesn't have flat edges, which probably wouldn't go over well on MTS. (And for good reason!) But since pics are easily available, here you go:
http://i654.photobucket.com/albums/uu261/icads_sims/front1.jpg
This is a "lakefront" house, the kind I occasionally like to build. I flatten the lot so that the back of it drops off steeply and then butt it right up against neighborhood water so that, when you're playing the lot you get lovely "lake views."
If you want to see more, you can do so here:http://icads-sims.livejournal.com/1746.html The pics are too large in file size to directly post here, and I don't feel like resizing 'em. You can also download the lot there, if you're brave.

Hahaha, thanks iCad. But really, my game's graphics? I'll let you know that right now I'm looking into upgrading my computer, because it's seriously outdated for gaming. The graphics are actually really poor, so the pictures must be deceiving somehow!
The sky is a recolor of this mod: http://www.modthesims.info/download.php?t=187229 that has stronger, more fantastic colors. I couldn't remember where I got it, but I found it here (it's the first item on the list): http://wcif-sims.livejournal.com/275753.html

Hey, I play on an 8-year-old laptop that was high-end when I bought it and all special-like and whoop-de-doo because it had a dedicated 128MB video card instead of an integrated chip. But now, pretty much EVERYONE'S graphics are better than mine!

I decided to try that sky mod as well. I am waiting for my game to load up now.
Nissun. I like how your palm trees look in the garden. The ones I have in my game with the white bark look like they have cloth for leaves, so I don't use them much anymore. Yours look more like real palm trees. Maybe I should look at downloading different ones and get rid of the ones I have. However, I will probably wait until I am done doing lot makeovers in my hood as I am sure that a few of those palm trees were used in the lots I haven't visited for a while.
Anyone else find that the more cc you download for building and landscaping, the more picky you get? To the point that you almost have to keep inventory in your head all the time for stuff that has lost favor in your eyes?
Which reminds me of something else I recently downloaded that I am extremely happy with. CuriousB (bagfran.livejournal.com) converted some trees into neighborhood deco that I put into my game just before finishing the last lot I posted. I am still amazed what a difference they make in my pictures not having blurry blobs for the backgrounds when I am in neighborhood view. Supposedly, they are a bit high poly, so I did not put too many in. But after seeing the results from a few different lots, I may try to put in a few more. But now I also want to remove the pink tree (maxis blobs) I still have in my game with another colorful (pink or purple) tree for neighborhood deco.

Well, this is my first post in these forums. I've been building in Sims 2 for over three years, and sharing my lots at TSR (though I don't quite accept the pay system). On one of my mysterious Internet tours, I stumbled upon this thread and saw many great creations.
Nissun, great buildings! I'm also a fan of 1984 and created many buildings for Orwellian themed neighborhood. My neighborhoods used to be filled with monumental skyscrapers before my old computer crashed. Recently, I remodeled Pleasantview, and included a bit older picture of it.

Great modern house, Hencing! For the nice roof and column, did you first make larger roof pieces and then removed some walls?
Edit: I started a new project: SkyGarden. I was partly inspired by a skyscraper in Simcity 4 (I wish I could play it with Windows 7 :( ), but ended up with something reminding a hospital.
Edit2: Interiors are quite empty, and I probably won't upload this. The main tower has only a very tall atrium with stairs and the smaller one has elevators.

Okey-dokes. So, I got Bon Voyage. And, I'm on the road, spending some time at a beach community, which has been awesome since where I live is landlocked. So, it's only natural that I try my hand at some beach lots, yes? :)
I dunno what happened with this one. It was supposed to be a little one-bedroom cottage kind of thing, the kind of place I'd like to retire to and be a professional beach bum. But then I got it in my head that I wanted "under the house" parking, which became difficult to make because of the unevenness of the lot I used plus the fact that I didn't want to make an actual "garage" with a door precisely 8 tiles back from the front of the lot, etc. In short, I made it difficult on myself and CFE became involved and...yeah. And then it became this three-bedroom thing with a big recreational space downstairs and more stairs than you can shake a palm frond at. I don't know what's up with that. But I like what I came up with, anyway. I even play-tested it a little bit with the Ramaswamis (I only ever use the Maxis families to play-test. ), and it turned out to be a fun house to play, so I'll probably be using it, assuming that it can be placed anywhere other than where I built it. Anyway, here you go.

iCad, I especially like the floorplan and interior colours of your house!
I made this Rainforest Research Centre for a contest at TSR:
Rainforest Research Centre is a science facility which was constructed to Vihrian rainforest after a generous donation from the owner of Simworld Corporation, Friedrich von Simstadt. One of the main focuses is finding plant medicines to several diseases such as the terrible Guinea Pig disease.
This residential lot is the largest possible, costs 220 119 § and it hasn't been test-played.

juhhmi, that really looks splendid and I hope you will post more photos. I'm sure it is not easy to show exterior shots with many trees on the lot, but I am curious to see more of the lot. I get tired of moving and deleting trees to take a few photos, to avoid getting frustrated trying to get a decent angle in the photo, so I often wait until after I've taken photos to finish the landscape. I applaud anyone for showing pictures taken with a full complement of trees.
I'm hoping to be done with a sim challenge by the weekend so I can be free to post more pictures of my lots. Funny how I always manage to find time to build another lot, but taking pictures and uploading seems like it steals so much of my time.

Thank you very much! I appreciate your response. :)
I'm not sure if I understood right, but more pictures can be found by following the previous link to Photobucket slideshow... And yes, it was quite hard to finish the building after placing trees since I kept pressing Page Down while trying to see under the tree tops. I'm glad, I managed to fit the lot nicely to surrounding neighborhood forest and got the feeling of continuity.
cheshirekat, I seem to have the same problem with taking pictures and uploading... Perhaps, I should upload this?
edit: I won't be uploading this because file size is big due to all the custom content. On top of that, I should find out what are the main meshes for all of those and add them to the lot. It would take forever.

I totally remodeled the "Harmonious Haven" house (comes with Seasons) for Jason O'Mackey and his family.
For some reason the camera didn't want to snap the pictures of the original, but some of you might recall it's the one with the pool in the living room, and the staircase smack in the middle of the kitchen.
At any rate, here's the ground floor. The room there was a nursery for Jason and Lillian's daughter Roseanne (I always like nurseries on the ground floor, in case another Sim has to give a baby a bottle if Mom can't nurse them). I took the staircase out of the kitchen and put connecting stairs.
http://i1017.photobucket.com/albums/af292/alexandrasims2/snapshot_00000005_9b248342.jpg
Upstairs was a HUGE bedroom with just a bed. I split the huge bathroom into two decent-sized bathrooms and added a third bathroom, and split the huge bedroom into two. (And it's okay to put a toilet or sink directly next to the bathtub--as long as it's not at the end with the faucet. So long as your Sim has access to the faucet, it's okay.)
http://i1017.photobucket.com/albums/af292/alexandrasims2/snapshot_00000005_3b248336.jpg
I also redid the outside in a nice cream-colored siding and used the flagstone flooring outside, as I felt it was a better match. When I added the driveway, I was sure to level out the terrain between the driveway and the pathway--or else hear whining about it being too steep.

I'm not very good at landscaping so I tend to do a lot of patios. This is one of my better efforts. The house is a three bedroom (+ nursery), three bath with a gourmet kitchen and two story grand dining room. The gazebo is where the hot tub is, and there is a lattice covered bbq/dining patio.

I thought I would share one more to give an idea of the kinds of houses I tend to build. This one is a very modern design and one of three modern concept homes I did side by side (you can see the backs of the others in one of the pics).
This is a 3 bedroom, 3 bath home. The upstairs could easily be redesigned to have more bedrooms by eliminating the game room, this is just what I did with it because I had a particular Simsfamily size in mind. The master suite includes a spa bath, and there is a home sauna off the upper deck. Outside reflects my tendency to fill yards with hardscaping and includes a large bar area next to the pool for entertaining.
Essentially an open concept, the most unique feature is a split level main living area with a raised home theater space and the more formal living area open to the kitchen and dining room.
You can see more pictures of this house and others I have built on my website (file:///D:/Documents/Brads%20Webpages/speculativevision/sims2homes/14/index.html)

I wanted to make an intrincate, creepy victorian mansion, with lots of rooms and stuff (to make secret passageways and confusing, doorless places!) It does serve that purpose, but I just don't get the style itself.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v437/Viki/Sims/snapshot_fb421c6e_7b42c5e1.jpg
And I can't get a nice picture of the entire thing. The neighborhood is still under construction. My final veredict is "meh, could have gone worse". It does have a quite cool conservatory on the other side, though...

I made over this maxis apartment block to better match a new neighborhood. Unfortunately, I don't think I'll be able to play it. Some rooms of the one apartment I've played are marked as not part of the apartment, for some reason. Maybe it's because I changed some of the doors? I just don't understand what may be causing it.

Some rooms of the one apartment I've played are marked as not part of the apartment, for some reason. Maybe it's because I changed some of the doors? I just don't understand what may be causing it.
Did you, by any chance, put down any of the "Great Divide" fences, the really low ones that are like room dividers? I use those a lot because I like a clean dividing line between areas of, say, carpet and tile, like real-life thresholds. I discovered, to my disappointment, that if you use those fences (Or, I imagine, any fence) inside of an apartment, it seems to mark interior areas of the apartment as "common area," even though it's inside an apartment, "behind" an apartment door. When that happened, I couldn't use, for instance, the phone in the kitchen because it was in a "common area."
So, I had to move out the Sims I'd moved in, change the zoning back to residential, remove the fences, then change the zoning back to apartments, and then everything worked fine.
That's the only similar issue I've run across, so I thought I'd throw it out there. That's a lovely remake of my favorite Maxis apartment building; it'd be a shame not to use it. I love the roof you put on it.
As for me...Been doing a lot of playing, not a lot of building, I'm afraid. So, no pics from me this time. :)

Thankyou, I really love that apartment building too. I tried to make it match the "gritty" feeling and textures of the neighborhood.
I didn't use the dividers (I rarely have), though I discovered and fixed the problem. I had changed a couple of double-door archways to put custom ones, and that seemed to mark everything inside the room as not part of the apartment. I changed the arches back, and the apartment is now working well.
Though I really liked that custom arch :(
