View Full Version : Milkshape.. and Im stuck
10th Nov 2010, 09:01 PM
Ok so I used TSR Workshop, imported a object in milkshape, created a new object out of it, but now...
I see in tutorials that they replace the old files exported from TSR workshop with the new ones u create in Milkshape under 'group'. BUT what if you end up with more groups than the original object.
For example: I made a new table and I removed all the old framework and made something my own out of the tool 'box' in milkshape.
Now I have a bunch of groups called 'box 0, box 01 etc.
Actually I dont know what to do with these 'groups' to finish my work and I can't find the exact answer in tutorials.
Someone to help me out pls?

You have to regroup all the groups so that you end up with the right amount groups. Select the groups you want the regroup in 'Group' tab and click the Regroup button.

You probably will need to make sure the groups are in the right order also...I'm not sure since I don't use TSRW. You use the up and down buttons to move things in the group list under the Group tab.

It's a good idea to write down what the original group names are because the final groups have to have the same names when you import your modified mesh back into the object.
i.e., you have 4 boxes to make a 3 legged stool. After mapping the parts, the horizontal box would be selected, grouped and renamed as 'seat' and the other 3 vertical boxes would be selected, grouped renamed as 'legs'.

They have to actually be renamed the same and simply being in the correct order is insufficient? I ask because with the tool set here all you have to do is keep things in order...renaming is not necessary.

I don't know if the workshop re-names the group if you export it from Milkshape, I have never tried it.
I always re-group and re-name in Milkshape first and place them in the right order, it's easier to keep track of things if you re-name them.
I used the tool set here once and found it too be a bit tedious, so I changed to the workshop, as it is much easier too use.
Don't bite me...I know you don't like it, but I wanted to have fun meshing, what the tools here just didn't give me. :)

Dee you know I don't bite :) So the answer is that TSRW causes things to appear in MS with certain names that must be kept along with the order? Or is the proper order and number of groups all you need?...I apologize but I couldn't be certain from what you said in your post.
My issue with TSRW is TSR...never with a creator who has selected that tool as the tool which works best for them. Meshing should be fun. For you using TSRW makes it that way which is a good thing...for me dealing with the gang at TSR isn't something I consider fun so I don't use their tool. There's no reason that needs to be something which creators fight or bite over IMO.

The only thing that matters in TSRW is the order and number of groups, the names are irrelevant. Well the names are irrelevant in the tool set here as well.
But as has been said, you will need to regroup your new meshes. You need to have the same number of groups exported from MS that you imported and in the same order. Also remember to properly assign joints. You will need to look on the joints tab to see which mesh parts were assigned to the joints, and then assign your new mesh parts to corresponding joints.
Please keep this on topic of answering the questions for the OP rather than going off on a tangent of who's tools we like and who's tools we don't like. :)
