3.3 - Siren's Song http://sabolegacy.blogspot.com/2011/11/33-sirens-song.html

In which I finally start introducing the fae thing I've been planning since friggin August...

EDIT: Actually I realize now that since yesterday was American Thanksgiving and we did a lot of talking some people may not have noticed I updated. So uh... you may wanna read 3.2 - Audtion (http://sabolegacy.blogspot.com/2011/11/32-audition.html) before moving onto today's update.

No more updates just yet, but I thought I'd post my generation 3 roll:-

Single Parent

Law Enforcement (Forensics)
Generation Goal: Social Bunny
Misc Fun: Live your Trait

I'm having 5 kids coming up too, but since I love being psycho busy with lots of babies, I'm happy. I might even try for 6 or 7 if I can get the fertility treatment to work right XD
But babies aren't coming until Christmas for sure, I want to get maternity leave GONE first by a mod, and I don't want mods on this computer except some "outdated" Twallan's. (If I could get on the site, anybody else not able to get in? It's been like this since yesterday!).

I've just tried and had no problems getting on there...

Edit to add:- Once you can get on there, MC currently has the ability to remove days off and also to force the sim to go to work regardless of days off (in the new "MC Cheats" module). I don't think it'll stop you accruing maternity leave but you'll be able to remove it

Yeah, I looked hard and found a good mod in Crazytown I believe that removed Maternity leave. I just need to install it again XD
Hopefully they update for Pets by Chistmas time, if not already :)

I'm annoyed that Twallan split up MC. But I'll get over it.

I have an update, too.

I just love Mittens, though I'm surprised neither child decided to get a name change when they were old enough to do so :P

I'm wondering if it's a Firefox problem or something? Anybody with Firefox able to get into Twallan's website?

Emma, I updated all my mods yesterday using firefox, and I didn't have any problems. I hope you can figure it out!

So, I've decided that I hate playing large families in the Sims. I only have 5 humans in my house, but right now I also have 3 horses and 1 cat. It's such a nightmare trying to keep everybody occupied! Maddie, I don't know how you managed with 7 kids. I think my brain would have exploded or something. And trying to get screenshots is such a pain!

Ali, I don't envy you're 5 kid roll. I'm personally dreading having to deal with that many children.

I rolled second chance/5 kids for gen 8... I'm really considering slowing my game down so I never get to it xD.

Then again I rolled 5 kids in gen 8 last time and I never got to do all 5 because of lag sooo...

For the first time in my life I'm considering praying for lag.

I'm sorry you guys don't like your big families :) I love my big families, especially when there are bunches of babies and tots and you got to rush to keep them alive. It's an adrenaline rush XD

Oh, and if anybody missed it because of Thanksgiving, I updated yesterday :) Tylar is here, what a cutie :P

Isa keeps on making the funniest faces, but Irish just has stolen my heart. Sorry Isa XD

And in-game Irish and Kipp had their first kiss. OMG, SHE MADE THE CUTEST ADORABLE FACE! I took SO many pictures of it :D She was all giddy and cute and sweet and I just love Irish so much! How can I make Irish a deadbeat parent!?!

I got a picture of Irish with that adorable face, I even managed to keep Kipp out of the picture :P It means her forehead is a bit cut off, but whatever :P She usually just looks so serious, it was so freaking cute to see her actually look like a lovestruck teen :D And yeah, it has slight spoilers to the wallpaper and stuff.

I'm pleased I've got my graphics working (the first chapter of Twinbrook is going to have really sad graphics, they look low even though they're not *shakes head*), though it has the weird side-effect of making my beds glow. It's kind of freaky, and since I used white for a few of the beds, they're awfully painful to look at. I have the lights on at normal, they were bright before. But I don't want it to be dim, because then my pictures would be all shadowy.
And yeah, don't care about spoilers here. If you're going to be upset over seeing a few shiny beds, you're crazy XD Besides, Tyson's room has aspects from the old house anyway, it's only Irish's room that has the new look. And you see some of it anyway in the above adorable spoiler :P
Though it could be leftover Alien Magic making everything bright and shiny :P Who knows at this point? XD

As from generation 3 I've started using names from books I've been reading, previously it was just random names although my previous (abortive) legacy I was inventing the names which was quite fun

I'm weird about how I name my Sims. I love trying to think of just the right name, one that not only suits the parents' tastes but will fit the kid's personality too. I really try not to choose names that I normally gravitate towards. Honestly, I spend way too much time looking at baby naming websites, lol. Usually, I do a google search to find my Sim's names, particularly if I'm aiming for a specific type of name or theme. I love Yahoo answers cause those people sometimes have really good ideas. Also, I attempt to make all the siblings' names sound good together or have a similar theme (you know, like trendy or vintage or some specific origin). Like with Nathaniel, Faye, and Anastasia, I went with the "a" vowel sound in all their names.

...And a longwinded answer for a short question, hah. :)

I named my family's second cat War Machine.
Lol

My family are decidedly unimaginative when it comes to naming cats, we're currently on Smokey II and Sammy III (it's a family tradition to call black cats Smokey or Sammy)

Had a frustrating afternoon with my game, my sims kept ignoring what I told them to do (Tamara in particular spent an entire sim afternoon mounting a horse - she kept either deciding to do something else or immediately dismounting) so I stopped playing and spent the evening building (or more accurately re-building) them a new house since I'm going to need a lot more room for 5 kids next generation

Does anyone know if the field trip glitch was ever fixed? I'd really like to start accepting them again..

For names, I usually use a generator, which I'm starting to find kind of boring... so I've started looking at name sites and choosing names based on the parents (for sims)/owners (for pets). Sometimes I'll also use the names of famous people. For instance, I'll look up famous architects and pick out a name from them for my to-be architect. I recently named my family's puppy Darwin since my last couple of generations have been interested in science-y things and most of the Sims have carried the genius trait; it seemed like a name they would pick out. This has been way more fun than the name generator ~

i just use websites to find names. sometimes when im making sims in the body shop, if they are a guy i name them after crushes  and if they are a girl i never name them after people i know because if they woohoo then i get a nasting picture in my mind. haha

CinderEmma
26th Nov 2011, 11:32 PM
I search names on baby websites. Usually they have a theme, like next Gen is going to be classic names (to counteract all the Alien stuff XD). Or they have the first letter in common, like both Tyson/Thorne and Isadora/Irish. Though with Irish and Isadora, it was more the shock of getting twins that caused me to make Irish's name, not because I wanted the matching first letter.

EDIT: My rabbit's name was Cinnibun (yummy) and my cat's name is Granger. Those are the most unique animal names I've had so far, better then Goldfishie #1, #2, #3, and Angel (there was one white goldfish).
EDIT 2: HOW COULD I FORGET BABOON? He grew up with Granger, but he ran away :( And yes, I was 9 when I named him, poor Baboon :P

It's not fixed, but I have found that when one of my kids is stuck on a fake field trip, if I check the status>personal on MC for each kid in the class, I will find another kid in the class who is also stuck in field trip mode. When I reset that stuck kid, my kid's status is fixed as well. It's a little time consuming, but I'd rather do that than not go on field trips at all.

I get Sim names from all kinds of sources. I will use baby names sites sometimes, or sometimes name Sims from characters in books. Sometimes I'll see a name on the news that I like; I once named a legacy family in Sims 2 for a Bush staffer named Dayspring because I really liked the name.

I like the souvenirs kids get from field trips, and sometimes they pick up a few skill points. From the trip to the mausoleum, kids can sometimes get magic gnomes, special seeds and gems. So for me it's worth it, but YMMV.

I haven't had any troubles with field trips that I've noticed, but then again I only send them to field trips when I think it would suit their future career (I.e: Yuki and Sam went to the theatre twice) because the souveniers they get bug me.

Don't worry Teal, I think it would happen right away or probably not happen at all. I've never been able to go on a field trip, they just get stuck outside the school. Bah.
I see the benefits, but not enough to try to fix it XD I dunno, I just don't like messing with my game much, even if it's to fix glitches.

So on the topic of maternity leave if you use Twallan's MC to force a sim to go to work on a maternity leave day, the day is still counted. They don't just roll over and add up. You do however get the maternity leave money on top of what you made that day.

Just figured that knowledge was worth sharing if anyone was interested in a way of getting around maternity leave.

Just thought I would pop in and let Buckley and Cali know that Bea and Foster got divorced (finally) and are enemies. Foster has had six kids with two different women (so far) and Bea is dating a new man, but I forgot his name. Those two lasted A LOT longer than I thought they would.

Harper is emo; Cedric and Harper have a moment; Uther opens up about his past.

Edit: Bea got married to Wil Abbey (already) and Foster is still playing the field. I have a feeling my town will be overrun with Foster-spawn and I'll need to do some major culling of his kin to make sure I don't have a bunch of inbreeding (is that even possible?). Which would actually be pretty funny, but no. Not happenin'.

Double Edit: A new search term for the Harris': "Hairy legs Harry" Wut.

In a game that isn't modded to be otherwise, sims can interbreed once they're second cousins or more distant.

For example, Arjun could not have romantic interactions with River, but he could with River's daughters. Not that he would ever be inclined to do so.

GigaRevival
27th Nov 2011, 9:03 PM
Ah, thanks for clearing that up Becky. I thought it could only happen if Woohooer allowed "near relation" or whatever that is called. Well, if it gets to that point then I'll worry about it. For now, Foster is permitted to procreate to his hearts desire (mostly because I'm far too lazy to intervene).

NutsAndDolts
27th Nov 2011, 9:25 PM
I don't use woohooer, so I'm not sure if it adds or removes restrictions.

That it has an option to "allow near relations" seems to indicate that either (a) allowing it would permit cousins or siblings etc to interbreed, or (b) the mod searches family trees and automatically disallows distant relations like second cousins, and the option to allow would merely set it back to EA standard.

Hm. Curious.

GigaRevival
27th Nov 2011, 9:36 PM
That...is a good point. I've never allowed it myself, but I remember someone on the threads at NRaas a while back questioning what near-relation actually did and I *think* Twallan stated that it would permit siblings (closer relations than second cousins, I assume) to have romantic interactions. My google/NRaas search is coming up nil though.

NutsAndDolts
27th Nov 2011, 10:36 PM
That would make sense. I guess I was just kind of hoping for a mod that disallowed inbreeding entirely, haha.

calisims
27th Nov 2011, 11:21 PM
I'd prefer no inbreeding too, but with such a small pool of potential partners and limited ability to go outside your community to find mates, if it wasn't available, you'd eventually run into problems. If I get squicked out by it, I just remind myself that in Austen's era, marrying second cousins was not only acceptable, it was desirable, lol.

ReyaD

So, for once I edited the legacy challenge page. I changed some wording, took out extraneous words, cleaned up the black/blue thing because there were some mistakes, etc.

It was clearly supposed to go black, blue, black, blue... but in some places it was black blue blue black.

EDIT: This effed up again anyway. Hmmm. I'm looking into this blue black travesty again right now.

I also deleted the "compendium farming" from examples of sneaky exploits, since we'd agreed some time last year that compendium farming was permissible if one had rolled collector. It was covered under the word "alchemy"; I put what this means in parenthesis in the collector roll. Also at some point we'd decided it was also permissible to use gems from the miner or from breaking space rocks (both of which take more time than running across town and picking up a gem, in my opinion, but I remember we discussed it back in my first legacy, when I had a collector for gen 3).

I threw out the general rules "you can move blah blah" because that info was already stated in the "To Begin..." section directly above it.

I added the "you may make money...." paragraph to general rules instead of misc, since that's pretty important and a lot of people overlook it at first.

I changed the wording for "step children" quite a bit. It was confusing. Please look over this and discuss if you disagree with the new wording/provision. We eliminated all other rolls that kept your heir from reproducing, hence the addition I made, allowing you to produce at least one biological child, even if the step children already meet or exceed your child count.

I considered taking "choose a trait RANDOMLY" out of Runs in the Family, but I didn't do anything to it yet. Nobody seems to really choose this family trait randomly, and for story reasons most of us would probably like the option to do so. So, guys, can I change the wording for this goal, or should we leave it be? What do you think?

...Also why does having a child with the Butler count as multi-cultural? I know maid gives you an extra trait but... lol.

Also, the challenge runs "until the children considered to be the 10th generation die of old age". But by that point, the new generation will have taken over, with no goals unless you've rolled them. Should we change it to read "until the 10th generation completes all of its required goals, or until the 11th generation reaches YA, whichever comes last"?

...THIS post itself isn't the cleanest post but I like to think I helped the blog. x.x

ReyaD
28th Nov 2011, 1:04 AM
It really helped the blog, Becky thank you for all that work. <3

For "runs in the family" I'd agree with taking out the random aspect.

As for the end of the legacy I'd suggest making it the point where the gen 10 heir achieves his/her goals, at which point any "weekly" goals would also be considered done.

NutsAndDolts
28th Nov 2011, 1:17 AM
When the next heir takes over all weekly goals always end (thankfully). =D

But we're still allowed to work on other ones if they aren't complete. I remember my gen 2 this time did not complete property mogul until sometime after gen 3 took over.

Yes I am. I can't imagine how difficult it was to come up with a chapter almost per week (especially considering I can't do that with my own legacy). Judging was hard too, no doubts about it. Congrats on making it this far!

Thanks for doing all that work Becky. I like the new wording for step parent. It reads well, imo. Also, I vote for taking out the word "random" from "runs in the family" because it's more fun to choose which trait you want for your kids. Finally, I think we should change the "challenge runs until..." line to your suggestion, the "whichever comes last" idea.

As for the multi-cultural butler issue, if we are counting service Sims as multi-cultural, then the butler should be allowed (I think). However, if service Sims are considered from a different culture, then what about role Sims like mixologists, stylists, and tattoo artists? Do they count as well?

Oh, I never liked the black/blue style personally. But if y'all like it, then it's no big deal. :)

I'm not really a big fan of the blue/black either, but I was an even bigger not-fan (it's a word now; don't judge me) of the weird color pattern that was on the blog prior. It was a bit of an eyesore. Good on ya' Becky for clearing that up. My eyes thank you too.

And I echo Buckley's question about multi-cultural sims: I always played it as ANY service sim (or role sim, as the Buckster put it) was considered a different culture; and then I read the rules again and had a big whoopsie moment - I seem to be having a lot of those recently. Definitely *accidentally* cheated on my last legacy.

The service sim thing wasn't originally there. It was added later, and I don't quite remember why, but it involved some philosophical discussion about hidden traits.

I don't think it makes any sense at all to count ANY service sims as multicultural, unless you've gone in and added a foreign culture trait to them.

If I roll multi-cultural I'll probably add French or Egyptian culture to a new person in town, instead of traveling or relying on the supernatural. The rules don't say I can do that, but I'm gonna. =P

I'm totally agreeing with you guys on this one.

So I was thinking for my next generation.... Should I keep Ana in the town but I feel I have to restart the legacy, but keep the story since I failed in my next generation.

I am going to have to reset all her.... well everything I guess. But oh well. What is your guys take on this?

Apparently I didn't read that much into it. I just thought we were including service sims because, well... I don't know exactly. Hidden traits didn't even come into the equation. Goodness, it's embarrassing when you have a dense moment. :| I also didn't have WA at the time, so that counts an excuse, right? Right?! :faceslap:

Giga: *Pat pat* Of course it counts, hunny.

So for the farmer roll, are we allowed to start the farm before the heir is of age to take over the farm? I had Marion start a farm since he has the green thumb trait and needs something to do, then rolled farmer for my gen 5 primary career. Would it be okay to continue with the farm and just let my farmer start his/her career with an awesome farm already set up?

LadyAwesome

I don't see why not, especially since it is a legacy, and that the farm got passed down is a good thing. Makes it extra awesome.

Thanks for all the work, Becky.
On the few times I've rolled Runs in the family, I've chosen the trait randomly, but I'm fine with it not being random. I just rolled it again, so I look forward to picking a trait for that.

The multi-cultural originally only included WA location Sims, and it was made as a way to have a WA based rule that didn't involve doing quests (which people wanted to save for the adventurer career). The supernatural was added after LN because someone suggested a separate roll for supernatural children, but some people (me) didn't want to be forced to have ghost/vamp babies. So the idea was rolled in as a option for multi-cultural. The role Sim and other stuff was added later, I don't remember why. So I don't care if that changes. I think it's fine to add Sims with culture traits to the neighborhood. Some custom hoods like Riverblossom Hills have them in place already, so it's only fair to allow players to add them.

And, I have an update:

Oh, I didn't realize that the multi-cultural role centered around hidden traits. Whoops. I actually rolled multi-cultural for my generation 2, but as I haven't decided whether I'm going to travel or not I re-rolled. I didn't want to deal with supernaturals or service Sims either. If I get it again, I'll probably just do your idea about adding the hidden trait to a Sim that moves into town.

Cece, I don't think you have to start a new farm, but I don't believe you can sell any produce that your family harvested before your heir became a Y/A. But you may want to wait for Melissa or Becky or whoever to make an official ruling though. :)

Personally that makes sense. I guess I'll just have a full fridge until Gen 5 is born.

Okay, I changed multi-cultural and runs in the family.

I threw out the service sims option and hopefully made the rest clearer. There are still lots of options aside from travel.

Also you can breed with the maid any other generation. It's just for multi-cultural, you gotta make her French now. ;)

You obviously don't fail if you're currently playing multi-cultural and using service sims. xD Or if you rolled this for an upcoming generation and were planning on use a service sim. By all means, stick to the plan.

Hopefully everybody's OK with this. Speak up if not.

Edit: I'll change farmer, too. This has come up before, and Buckley is correct. The heir may take over an existing garden, but if you have 600 apples in the fridge from his father's time gardening, sorry you still can't sell those, lol.

This is how I looked at that rule before (as in, you can only sell the stuff the Sim in the career has done), but I recall Martin saying that you could sell anything you have for it once you get into that career? So any paintings from previous generations once you get a painter, any fruits/veggies from previous generations once you get a gardener, etc. So um.. which is it? lol.

Nothing to add to the conversation going on, but I have Round 2 of Riley, Sara and Samson. Riley and Sara are from Nick Knack and Samson is from Goodwin Goode.

Also, Pavel and Carey's first children, Isobel and Shawn (the last 2), I aged them up in CAS so I could take the pic then and there, because I'm impatient. They're toddlers in game.

:!: *ponders* *removes brain* *shakes brain* *watches information fall out*

Ah! There it is. I remember. You're right, Martin did say that about paintings.

Though it makes no sense to me personally. D=

"Ah, I am a famous painter. My grandmother did this crappy watercolor of a dog once though, any chance you'll buy that?"

If I had a painter and an unemployed sim, my unemployed sim could function as a painter under that logic, and not have to wait for opportunities to sell paintings because his/her partner could sell them. I feel this breaks the spirit of the challenge, where your sim has a career, and if they have hobbies they depend on random opportunity to make money.

We need to make the rules about these careers consistent, and add a note to general rules about them. Either (A) If you can sell everybody's paintings when you become a painter, you can sell everybody's produce when you roll farmer. Or (B) You may only sell what you harvest, and you may only sell what you paint.

So we'll need a consensus. Do you guys want to go with the restriction, or not?

Should it be A, or B? :deal:

So far, two votes for B.

Also. If you guys agree, I'm also going to add a rule that allows you to shift-click and delete any object from the home, rather than sell it. I don't consider it cheating, and when I brought it up before no one else did either. It's like, another of those unwritten allowances we should really write down. And it's the method I personally use to get rid of unwanted paintings and sculptures that weren't created by a sim who rolled artist.

Yeah, I've been using the shift-click method of deleting unwanted sculptures, too. Getting it written down is a good idea.

I think when Martin came up with the idea of selling all the old paintings in the artist career, he was just wanting to lighten his inventory. If people are more aware of the ability to delete those items without selling them, then selling off old inventory is less of an issue.

And, Becky, thank you so much for all the work on the blog. :D

Redhead Creations
28th Nov 2011, 1:07 PM
Nuts, I'm with ya on that one. I couldn't understand why it would be ok to sell off old objects just because you rolled a career that falls over those items. I'm assuming it was a way to be able to rid the household of a bunch of stale inventory - but since the invention of the shift-click, all old and moldy objects can be poofed from existence! It's like the Sim is throwing the item into the trash, really.

I vote B!

In unrelated news, the freaking bane of my existence (the world I'm creating) is coming along, more than 1/2 the community lots are done. I want to put in some houses of my own, but it would take me three more years to fill all the lots soooooooo Melissa, would you mind if I used some of your houses?? =). When I had a farmer, sometimes I let his wife help in the garden because she constantly rolled wishes to do so. I just made sure the real gardener did the bulk of the work. I never allowed her to actually harvest the plants, only to water and weed them sometimes.

Not sure how to properly word that in the rules. It's kind of a special case; it wouldn't apply to stuff like artist. Where no, your spouse can't help you paint, lol.

I've made a new sim that I've fallen in LOVE with :) If I get a roll for a medic/scientist/gardener/(maybe)chef for my spouse in the future and I have a boy heir, she's definitely getting introduced :) Right now I'm playing her in Sunset Valley, not really wanting to play my legacy further until I can get into Twallan's site *shakes fist at silly computer*. It doesn't mean no updates, I'm just a little obsessed with this sim right now :)

Meet Kenlee Day :D And yes, her name isn't real (I think), but it sounds really nice :) What do you think of her as a potential Marlin? (Or just a nice background sim in my legacy?)

She's heavier then she looks, though these are EA pants, they still seem to slim her too much. I plan on changing them soon though, I like her curvy :)

And I still have the shiny issue, it's more noticeable on really white surfaces. Bah, I guess it can't be alien magic then XP

Hi everybody :) i started this legacy last weekend :) so i am just going to jump in :) i'm working on a blog currently, but waiting untill i have enough pictures for a story before i will post the link here (ghehe, performance anxiety :))

Here's a bit about my family though:

Avian and Serena Crist:
Their background story's will become clear while the story goes on (so when i figured out how to do this lol)

Their roll:

Generation 1:
Marital Structure: Couple
Children: 1
Primary Income: Non-Standard Career: Freelance Scientist/Chem Addict)
Secondary Income: Non-Standard Career: Freelance Scientist/Chem Addict)
Generation Goal: Deadbeat Parents
Misc Fun: Homemade
Optional Pets Goal: Perfectionist

I also rolled for a 10G goal:
Remember the Past

I wasn't to pleased tbh, with my first roll ever! So i was really tempted to roll again, but then i figured that would take the fun and purpose out of this legacy......i do have a hard time coming up with a story. I find it hard for them to become deadbeat parents just with no reason :) so still working on that! But i am nearly there!!

I am already playing though :) taking loads of pictures etc, currently Serena just gave birth to the second generation. So i am going to try and work on the blog till i get to that point :)

I hope to have fun here and i will put some extra effort into reading the legacys of you lot as well!! :) (already tried, but noticed some legacys are nearly finished! What a reading i am up to then!!)

One question though, i read about the rerolling for careers, you can reroll if you have the same careers in nearby gens (like 1 and 2).........but what about my situation?? being stuck with two people that have the same career?? Does that count for a reroll?? or is it just very bad luck???

NutsAndDolts
29th Nov 2011, 3:04 PM
Welcome to the challenge! Personally I'd love your roll, except I'd re-roll for deadbeat parents since I've seen enough of those in real life to not want to be forced to do it in sims. And this challenge should be fun, lol. But some people have made cool stories out of deadbeat parents, and I look forward to seeing what you do.

We never discussed if the career re-roll should include a re-roll if you don't want both sims in one generation in the same job. It probably never occurred to us because many of us would find that to be, erm, ADORABLE. But I suppose we could add that exception to the rules, if the rest of you agree?

Keep in mind you wouldn't have to re-roll, but the option would be there. ^.~

Welcome to the challenge, Klevkin.

A lot of us have already admitted there are some goals we just don't do because they'd ruin the fun for us, like Deadbeat Parents. But as Becky mentioned, some people have done great stories around that goal, so it's up to you.

I'd be fine with allowing a reroll for partners with the same career. I would personally hate to have two Sims doing the same Ambitions job in one generation.

Hi Klevkin! Glad you're taking up the challenge! I can't wait to see what you do!

Regarding your roll and story - there is a lot of meat there! For one, both parents are in the same career, so that means they are totally career focused and perhaps the kid was a mistake. They never intended on having a kid because they don't want to distract from their great world changing experiments?

Or you could be creative with the backstory - since they're both scientists perhaps they "created" this kid on accident - a science experiment gone wrong - so they don't know how to relate or handle the kid (or even believe it to be human?!) so it's left to its own devices.

Those are just a couple ideas that came to mind. Just have fun with it! =)

@nutsanddolts yeah thats why i was put off at first as well, i find it hard to give them some caracter as it were, cause i can certainly not relate to them :) but well, my backstory has helped me play them a bit more..........

Yeah, I thought it would be nice for the family to help out as something they did together & Jo starting to take an interest in what Joshua was doing as she stopped being so depressed, I didn't really think about the implications on the career side of things. I have tended to make Joshua do the harvesting and restricted the family to weeding and watering.

Perhaps if we want to allow an exception for the farmer career we could say something along the lines of "while your family may help in the garden, your heir/spouse (whichever is relevant) must do the bulk of the work and is the only one allowed to harvest produce"?

ReyaD
29th Nov 2011, 6:17 PM
Personally I'd leave the rolls as is. Adding the exception to the farmer rule would just make it bulky and confusing to people who are new to the random legacy idea or don't follow this thread.

I have an update also.

http://archlegacy.blogspot.com/2011/11/chapter-56-only-useful-magic.html

Since you mention the ambitions careers, Melissa, I'm going to go ahead and add an option to re-roll if you get the same career for both primary and secondary in the same generation. x.x

EDIT: Added rule #15 to the legacy page. Please look over it and critique.

Buckley
29th Nov 2011, 8:25 PM
Hmm, I'm not sure about rule #15. It seems a bit... vague. I think it's a great idea to write down all those "unwritten" rules, but it might be better to leave that one unwritten? Although, I don't feel particularly strong either way.

Thanks for doing all that work on the blog Becky. It looks so much better! :)

NutsAndDolts
29th Nov 2011, 8:30 PM
It's just that new people may be immediately turned off by things such as deadbeat parents, or whatever nonsense, and don't realize we don't want anyone to play a goal that really makes them uncomfortable. I'm just not too sure on how to word it without saying "lol do whatever".

...Because it really IS saying "lol do whatever". =P

Buckley
29th Nov 2011, 8:32 PM
I see what you're saying Becky. It's a tricky rule to write. I guess, for me, rule #15 seems very common sense. If you hate one of the goals, don't play it. Before I ever started blogging or posting on the forum, I played a couple generations of this challenge and ended up re-rolling the "hands off" goal once. I didn't think it was hard enough. Also, I immediately knew I wouldn't play idle careers, even if I did roll for it. I just think it's somewhat obvious. Again though, I don't care either way.

EDIT: I guess you could always just say "If you hate one of the goals, then don't play it. However, you must be consistent from the start of your legacy to the end." Hah, I don't know. It is a tough one.

NutsAndDolts
29th Nov 2011, 8:37 PM
Common sense is outlawed on the Internet. O.O

You may be right though. I can just nix it. We'll see what the others think first, about whether it's an unwritten allowance that needs to be written.

Redhead Creations
29th Nov 2011, 8:59 PM
I'm with Colleen on this one, I think. Because I think people will do this anyway. There's a few rules that I re-roll for as well, such as Fashion Diva and and It's So You, because I do those things all the time in my own gameplay. Having something like "Born With It" (Can't we PLEASE change this rule to "Born This Way"? That would be hysterical) or even Deadbeat parents are good for a player like me, because those are things that I don't normally do.

I would hope people wouldn't feel so forced to do something they didn't like that they'd feel it's easier to abandon the idea of the challenge. But, again, there is no common sense on the interwebs! =)

That's a good point, Red. What we do and don't roll for is very... uh... nuanced, I guess.

I'm not doing no strangers anymore because it's like rolling nothing.

Trying to capture all of said nuance would make the rule very lengthy and bulky and confusing.

Klevkin
29th Nov 2011, 9:18 PM
I haven't read the rule yet, but I do get a feeling what its for, i'm not sure its necessary to make a rule about it.....if I wanted I could have rerolled and not tell anyone, who would ever know, its just that I started this legacy to also play the stuff I normally don't, like redhead says, people who play for that reason wouldn't mind to much with a goal like that, people who play for other reasons probably won't mind rolling again without telling?

Also......you have the option to reroll, you guys already added that, so perhaps you could clarify in there that it also counts for goals you don't want to play?

@lady, thanks for the hug haha!

NutsAndDolts
29th Nov 2011, 9:56 PM
I went ahead and removed rule #15. I didn't like the wording. I'm not overly concerned with it not being there in any form at all, since it doesn't affect ME, but if you guys want to figure out a way to make the spirit of the rule clear to new people, that's cool too.

For those of you who didn't see it, it went like this:

15. If you really hate a challenge objective, do not use it in your rolls, or just re-roll without penalty. This doesn't apply to combinations that seem nasty, such as five kids single parent. Provided you'd be okay with 5 kids, or with a single parent, and are only mad because you got both, you'd need to use your joker on that. ;) What rule #15 means is that if rolling something makes you very uncomfortable, don't use it. One example is Deadbeat Parents; some of us have seen enough of that in real life. Others don't mind rolling this objective and have created fantastic stories around it. Basically some challengers use all of the rolls, and some don't. This has gone as an unwritten rule for a long time because we didn't want to say "you can just blow off whatever you want". Therefore, try to decide what you really can't stomach beforehand.

Lady, I know what you mean - I am constantly behind the conversation here. =) BTW: I didn't even realize I haven't started your Legacy!!! I'm getting right on that!! haha

[EDIT] Nuts, if anything, perhaps something can be written up as a disclaimer in the optional section?

KaiRuh
29th Nov 2011, 10:19 PM
Yeah, I think it'd work better as a disclaimer than a "rule." Just to say that if a roll makes you uncomfortable or doesn't change your normal gameplay, you don't have to include it when you roll.

That brings me up to date in my game so the next update may be a while as my boyfriend is coming down this weekend :lovestruc

I'm in England where the weather is currently cold & wet but nothing like as bad as some of you have! Oh yes, Tab is "cameraman mode" and is excellent for getting those perfect shots! I miss my mod that I had that prevented Sims from "vanishing" so you could get REALLY up close and personal. That might have been in TS2, though, because I even remember you could get inside them and see the backside of their faces which was kinda creepy. haha

Down to 60, can't cut down anymore so the writing's going to be a bit short for a few scenes. Well, actually she was there 2-3 days, but usually it's 2-3 days per chapter XD

Oh, boy, you don't want to even know how many pictures I've taken for my legacy. I think Melissa and I have you both beat. =) I remember her saying that she takes about as many as I do. =)

And I don't see anything wrong with using Photoshop - especially when it's used to create something you can't do in game. And while I didn't use it for the scene with Vincent, I did use it for a "nightmare/flashback" shot of Morand's when he saw the woman "die" in the fire. But I would totally use it for a hypnotism scene as well. =)

I've seen some blogs where people have completely used photoshop on every image to give it a certain look - which can be very effective.

[EDIT] So, I just checked, out of morbid curiosity, and I have (for 29 chapters) a total of 2,422 screenshots. Ugh! That's an average of 84 pictures a chapter. (I have an illness)

I got good news! My firefighter career is working! IT HAS NEVER WORKED BEFORE! *squeals* I might switch Tyson back to Investigator in the new town, it would be fun to juggle an Ambitions career, horses, and 5 children :)

Firefighter + Equestrian makes my head hurt... that's mu current roll. Plus, it stopped working, meaning no jobs pop up, so I spawn them... and sometimes it won't let me complete them: won't let me inside the house, fire is out but can't save sims for some reason, etc.

Oh that is horrible. Jordan is in the Movie career. And something is stopping her from handing out fliers, its flippen annoying. Unsure if it is just lag or what. *sigh*
So yesterday it got to 30degrees Celcius. I was so freaken excited, it never gets that hot here. Looks like we are going to get a decent summer:D weeee.
Also Happy first day of summer, chirstmas Tree putting up day. So Teal celebrate with me.

xD It's not a bad year for me, Awesome. It's just not what I'm used to. Dec 25th for me usually means shopping on the pier followed by a frap on the beach and then a party.

This year it'll be a sit down dinner with my immediate family. Aaand... that's it. It's just weird. I'm not meaning to complain, its just not what I'm used to.

The last time I played it went for half an hour without crashing so hopefully I managed to fix the problem. Otherwise things are going to get very interesting.

Speaking of spawn... Ronnie aged into YA and Dahlia became a child. Cho and Tacia make some gorgeous kids. I'm so proud <3.

I'm just happy to finally be able to show you guys baby number 2. I can't decide if she's fugly or incredibly adorable. I'm so conflicted!

You're from the Netherlands?! How cool! It's no big deal about the blog. I still understand how to comment and follow and everything. Seriously, I was just curious. :)
TBH, i am not even sure if i can change the language of those parts :)

Just wondering :D why is it cool? haha, i was even thinking that you might not even know where it is hahahahaha (small little country that we are.......)

our current weather is about the same as AJH has in england, though general rule is, that over here its a bit milder then in england :)

@ Klevkin in came camera is just pressing c. I downloaded a print screan programme and such (because it was bets for ts2) But well... a year after I am like DUHHHHH lol. Also I use paint.net.... so kinda same???? Glad to have you aboard by the way.

oh lol.........i always used the c-button when taking pictures in game, but seriously, i normally don't take pictures, wouldn't know what to do with it, so i am glad i found a purpose for those pics now ;)
And yes, i use paint.net as well :) sometimes i'm a bit slow on developments so i used the old paint that came with the computer, till i read somewhere that paint had introduced layers as well haha, then i downloaded that one :)

Tab... tab is my favourite key for taking photos. It lets me zoom in to get those really adorable shots of toddlers and facial expressions.
I was wondering how you got that many cute pic's of toddlers! i never seem to get close enough to get those cute faces clear enough!

UGH, why won't Twallan's website load? I have no clue why I can't get in, especially if you guys can, it's driving me CRAZY! *smashes things*
Did you try a diff browser?? don't know what you are using right now? But maybe it will help you gain access to the site again.
If not, and you want the updates, you could pm me a list of what you need and the last date you updated. I am happy to help you out on that part and perhaps email the files or use dropbox to get them to you.
And seriously!! 127 pictures for one chapter??? I think i am going to be the person with the shortest chapters of all over here.......... lol i see you cut it down, can't you cut what you want to tell in two chapters?? And then use a major cliff hanger or something in the middle of it?? That way you don't have to cut out any scenes you don't want to miss, and you don't have that long chapter you don't want either :)

I had to clean up my screenshots folder yesterday.......i had over 500 as well......and my husband started to complain because his fav game (flight simulator) wouldn't start due to lack of memory :faceslap:

GigaRevival

Klevkin: Is it the Microsoft Flight Simulator? Because I'll admit, that game is damn addicting. I would have been bummed too if there wasn't enough room on the computer to fly my pixelated plane!
; )

I'm with both of you on the overabundance of pictures. I have some major photo culling ahead of me... and I don't like it.

Klevkin: Is it the Microsoft Flight Simulator? Because I'll admit, that game is damn addicting. I would have been bummed too if there wasn't enough room on the computer to fly my pixelated plane! ; )

yes it is!! And when he mentioned it i knew what caused this problem, but pretended to not know and told him i'd check it out.......aparently he had been stressed all day about why the game didn't work..........so he was a bit pissed that i didn't tell him i knew what the cause was hahaha

it is also the reason why i have the luxury of two screens on the computer, so i can play the sims and read on the internet at the same time .

My husband downloaded some apps that give him some extras for the game, but he needed a second screen for them.........so he got one from the attic and installed it last week......and now he even wants a third to create a real cockpit effect on our desk!
But he also made the mistake a few years ago, when we bought this computer, to let me ehm....lack of proper english word, the process where you divide the memory on your computer in diff portions and diskdrives??. Well anyways, he let me do that.........and i figured the C drive didn't need that much, because we would install new stuff on diff drives...never realising games like the sims save the screens and everything else on the c drive..........even if you install the game itself on a diff drive

Luckily we'll probably get a new one in about two or three months haha

Update! (Beat cha Giga!)

3.8 - Glimmer of Hope http://sabolegacy.blogspot.com/2011/12/38-glimmer-of-hope.html

Baby number 2 is born, Yuki breaks a heart and Watcher considered smacking herself for setting up a plot line without actually knowing how to end- oh wait. Nvm. I thought something up.

Now to head to class and play jeopardy for bonus marks.

^You win this round. *shakes fist*

So just for lulz, I had Harper find and befriend a unicorn and then set her neighbors house on fire... for science. Well Cedric, being the former firefighter that he is, decided to jump right in and put out the flames, but the game glitched and he got stuck in the room and no amount of reset sim would fix him (he would just spawn to a different portion of the room; it was weird). Anyway, he died and it was sad. Time to reload and pretend it never happened.

lol Awwww I think I was 10 because some evil bitch told me.
I can't remember how old I was, but my older sister stayed up one Christmas to watch and then told me the next day that it was Mum who filled the stockings not Santa so the following year I asked Mum (oddly enough on a Santa train I'd been taken on for a birthday treat) and she admitted it.
