Thanks again everyone! You and your blogs have inspired me to try and write a story along with my photos! Once I get everything set up I'll share the link.

Whoops again because I already took out the money. Lol. It's okay though my 2nd gen is an artist and she's been racking in cash thanks to painting constantly. =] Also, I'm wondering if I could just take their homework out of their inventory and shift click object, delete? If that works the only problem then is remembering to do that. Usually in my game as soon as they come home from school they start on their homework.

One more question, So far all of my heirs have been female which I like because I usually play them but when my 2nd gen got married she took her husband's last name. Do you tend to keep the heir's last name and change the husband's to her's or do you just go on and have a long list of last names in your legacy? I'm assuming it's okay to pick all female heirs if I wanted, right?

I usually have them take my heir's surname. Although if I can't come up with a good reason for it I just pretend the whole name issue never happened >_>.

I realized Quynh and Edward were Von Hagens after all the kids were born... but I changed it since A) Von Hagen isn't my legacy, and B) I was still calling them the Speries. Also, it's totally alright to have a matriarchy/patriarchy if you'd like to play that way, we have no rules against it. Only if you decide to roll for the heir would that dictate the gender for you, but that's completely optional.

My game won't even load after taking out all my CC. I can get the game up and running, but I can't load any saves or start a new game *ponders*

In my case my gen 2 sims will actually have different last names. But my heir will keep the founder's name.
And Elsie will keep her mother's.

Hi all, sorry for my absence :) been sick for a few days (as was my son and is my daughter :(), getting a little bit better right now so i thought i'd read up on here :)

Welcome to the challenge! and panda, i'm curious about your first legacy as well :) my sims are not yet on the upload page, though i should get them there i'd think :S but you can find them on my blog :) and jessica, i agree with the rest, if you do like taking the pictures, just post those :) i'm also curious :D

GNOMES!!! I've been reading through beckys R&R legacy on my mobile (thats fun to do when you're sick and can hardly sit up straight! :D so thanks for that becky) and noticed all those gnomes :D and I love them :D but ehm, I was wondering, since I never knew you could "collect" them. I always thought it was a random idea.....is it perhaps an idea to make a 10 generation goal out of it that says collect all the possible gnomes? And since those goals are optional, and choosable if you want, people who hate gnomes *winks at Jessica* won't have to do it.

Talking about gnomes......is it perhaps a good idea to mention them in the money earning section rules thingy?? As in don't sell them? Because the rules does say that you can make money by anything that is not named in a profession (though i haven't sold any yet, i love them to much (only have one :S)

Jessica, I normally changed the husband's name to my legacy name. But there have been a few times where I've changed my legacy family's last name. When Violet McDermott married Lyle Carlton, I got his last name and ended up keeping it.
And in my current legacy I changed the family's last name when they had to go into hiding from the law.
So, you can do whatever you want really, there's no rule about your family name, and it is okay to pick all female heirs.

Gnome-getting is kind of random, actually.

There's three from the vacation worlds (though I have heard they might pop up in the consignment shop, I've never seen it).

The vampire gnome pops up when you have too many plasma fruit plants I believe, and assimilates all teddies on the lot like some kind of borg.

The sculpting gnome must be sculpted, and it's a very small chance that your sim will make one. It took me several generations of hobbyist sculptors to achieve one, and then the same person sculpted another soon after. Ugh. I've had much better luck with the invention gnomes, which are randomly invented.

There's a hip-hop gnome that can be given to your sim randomly as a celebrity gift. I don't use the celebrity system in my game, so I've considered buying it with buydebug just 'cause.

Laundry gnome is randomly found in the highest quality dryer. I find one about once a generation.

The normal magic gnome now ages and dies (*cry*). He can be obtained in a variety of random ways, such as fishing or having gems returned in the mail. I think there's a surefire way to get him with the WA display case transfiguration, though.

The pets gnomes are apparently a menace, with the horse one cropping up constantly as your horse licks the salt lick or something. Some modders have changed the frequency of the horse gnome appearance. I have had no luck getting the other three (cat, dog, freezer bunny ... apparently the dog one involves the dog choosing your sim as BFF and then maybe the gnome will spawn, the cat one involves catnip and the bunny involves a pet freaking out at the fridge... but the chances for the last three are very small).

The Troglodyte (caveman gnome) can be found randomly with the time machine. I had to delete several alternate timeline children from my household before I got that one. v.v

...But hey, gnome collecting is fun, lol.

First time i saw that in your blog I nearly fell of my chair. Thanks everyone. I think I may change the husband's last name to my legacy name. Oh the gnomes! They climbin' in my windows and snatchin' my Sims up. Ahahahaha. I get gnomes all over the place. But of course it's only because I don't like them. If I wanted them, there wouldn't be a single one in sight. Go figure.

I've never gotten a magic gnome from transfiguration, just the 'sleeping gnome McNulty', who doesn't move. But I have had kids bring home a magic gnome from field trips to the mausoleum (also, seeds and gems, which Sims can also get from touring the mausoleum. As well as mauled by a bear.)
When I was collecting every cut of gem for Rex's museum, I was frequently annoyed to find one of my rarer gems being replaced by yet another magic gnome (by then a I had more than 24 gnome graves on my lot, and they had become somewhat less than special and unique by that point). Rex had to break a lot of space rocks to get that Fluorite, damn it!

I have seen the WA gnomes in the consignment shop from time to time, as well as the Ambitions gnomes.

I got two dog gnomes from being BFFs with my one dog. Never got the cat gnome, though.

Since we're on the subject of gnomes, how do you get the baby gnomes? You have to have two of the base game magic gnomes on your lot or something, right? I want to collect all the gnomes eventually, but I really want a baby gnome. Because I really want to see the punk teenager gnome, haha.

Also, do the other gnomes age and die? Or just the base game gnome? I've been wondering about that ever since I collected nine (NINE!) of the horse gnomes. That would save me the effort of shift+click+deleting them all.

Yeah, sometimes when you send gems to be cut in the mail, you get a gnome instead, with a message that says 'oh hey, it turns out that gem you sent was really a gnome!'

Colleen, I've seen reports of people getting baby gnomes with only base game magic gnome on the lot. I got my first baby gnome right after a wedding party (I had more than one gnome on the lot already) After that I would get baby gnomes rather regularly. I had a veritable army of gnomes at one point. Then a gnome mass grave.
It is only the base game magic gnome that ages now, the rest don't.

Alma: I have my first day of the last term of college too, although i think over the pond i'd be a Senior in high school. Why can't all our schooling systems be the same!!! It's so confusing.

I have only ever had one inventing gnome and one gnome grave in my whole sim playing life, i feel so left out.

Also, I went to my friends bday today and it was a shopping trip. There happened to be a game store aaaannnnnnd...I got Sims 3 Pets! Finally!!!
I might stop playing my legacy for a while to get used to it. I have a buffer that is plenty big enough anyway so it shouldn't be that much of a problem

I was under the impression that baby gnomes appeared after a sim in your household got married. I've had a couple that way. Don't think it matters if the wedding is private or celebrated though.

I saw the wiki the other day when I was updating for the new patch. I love it! Except there's no easy way to see what version the mods are except under the update history... but since most of the updates are just him moving the mods over it's been difficult. I think I updated all of them, but my game still won't load. *frustrated*

I've had a hell of a time with error 12 over the past few days but I sorted that out, and I'm slogging away at my first chapter now (when I'm not reading other blogs =p). I haven't used blogger for years - my first legacy was done in a Word document - so I'm still getting used to it. I'm heading away to the bach for summer break today, but hopefully I can get the first chapter up before I go.

I'm incredibly curious about gnomes now. I used to just delete them. Maybe I won't, and see if I can get my own little gnome army going...

Okay everyone, I FINALLY finished creating my blog. I had to keep Googling how to use blogger because I've never had one before. Lol. But I did use some of your blogs to help me with what was supposed to be there.(A link to the rules, current generation roll and a link to this thread) I did a family tree too. Random heirs are all well and good. xD But if you're like me, you keep rolling Half-Siblings and like 4 kids. And then, just for kicks, you get your Sims to hook up with the ugly or really weird-looking people in town just for kicks. And then you look at the children and go "OH GOD WHY DID I DO THAT I DON'T WANT THOSE GENES IN MY LEGACY. DDD8"

So the pretty one is winning out so far in this generation. xD I might be shallow, but she's just awesome.

well...........thats why i filled my town with pretty simmies from other peoples legacys :D and dumped the EA created ones from the bin........so twallans mods creates new sims, and they turn out to be based on whats in my bin :) and then you only get pretty nice simmies :D (though I am starting to feel the need for some fresh genetics......don't want all sims to be alike......)

I have found that story progression tends to severely dilute any sort of racial diversity in my neighborhood. With the genetic skin blending feature thing, they always turn out lighter than their darker skinned parent. I'm trying though. :)

I don't know why, but Tiara/Zac actually birthed an extremely dark-skinned kid, pretty much right on target with Zac's shade. Maybe that's why I like her. I'm hoping she'll have a darker kid too so I can keep it going. 8D

...that also reminds me that I need to go back and get an updated version of MC, if it's out. My Stylist absolutely will not work through it, hah. Most frustrating thing ever.

No, they've been around a while. I've recently taken them out to try and spare my poor little laptop a bit.

I deleted the school building and then put it back down again which seemed to stop the kids from being kicked out of school before the end of the day, but I didn't find out if it solved the afterschool activities because the error 12's drove me to move towns before either of my kids had another afterschool activity day.

I love her eyebrows. I LOVE them. xD Eyebrows with character! That might seem silly to love, but I feel like I'm the only one on my campus who doesn't pluck or groom my eyebrows, and they're just a little less thick than hers, and I love them, so any characters with larger eyebrows automatically get my love.

Emma, this challenge is supposed to be fun. You shouldn't let your fears and insecurities overshadow that. I'm happy to hear that you're going to be updating regularly again. :)

I think it says check when there's a possible stuck sim, and if it doesn't correct itself, then it'll put up a message so you can reset them... But don't quote me on that

Yeah, with the stuck aging check, it doesn't fix it right away. iirc, if the stuck aging persists for a few days, overwatch will reset that Sim.
If you do it manually, check that the Sim isn't pregnant.

So far my base game works, I have yet to install any expansions or patches past 1.2.7. So I have a decision to make about my heir, and this also brought up an interesting scenario in sims genetics. I'll keep it under the spoiler button because 1) its a spoiler, 2) I'm posting two photos and I don't want it to stretch the page.


Okay so, my heir finally aged into a toddler and she inherited Sky's hair. Not her white hair, her black hair with white highlights and tips. I didn't give Sky that hair until the twins were teens! And in game, Sky is listed as deceased in the family tree (which I know shouldn't matter, but she died with the black hair so maybe thats why it listed the brunette hair as her natural hair colour?) She also got Sky's eyes.

Anyway, I dunno if I should keep my heir with Sky's hair:

That's the way genetics works, if you change a Sim's haircolor at any time, all their descendants born after the color change will use the new color. That includes grandchildren born to Sims who were born before the haircolor change. The haircolor isn't carried in the parents like a gene, you just have a percent chance to inherit a haircolor from a grandparent, and the haircolor will be the one the grandparent currently has (or the last color before they got elder gray hair).

Here are my thoughts on that.

Grandkids inherit whatever the grandparents' hair was at... well, whatever time their hair color is determined. So if a grandparent dyes their hair late in life, yes it can magically pass on because of oversimplified sims genetics.

I would not allow this to happen in my game because it makes no sense.

I think Sabina's hair color looks better on the kid anyway, no offense to Sky.

Melissa, about the stuck aging check thing, are you supposed to manually reset the Sim when you get one of those notices or can you wait and let overwatch do it? Unfortunately, I get those messages all the time, and I'm not sure what I'm supposed to do with them. Thanks for your earlier tip, btw. I wasn't aware about any of that at all. :)

I don't what the "right" answer is in terms of genetics and all that, but I agree with Becky about which one looks better. Sabina's hair color looks really pretty on your heir. :)

Colleen, after what they said (thanks btw for all that! Very helpful!) I've been looking around and find raglan saying that you can check that person, if its a negative number on days til transition you can age them up manually, though most of them correct themselves within a few days, if its like 10 then there could be a real major aging glitch or something. Not sure what to do about that but hope it helps.

I have 3 possible reasons why Alyssa and Cole would be deadbeat parents. There is one I particularly want to go with I just don't know if I can write that much drama. Lol. Although just because theyhave to be deadbeat parents, that doesn't mean they have to completely ignore their children does it? Could it just mean they won't be teaching them the skills as a toddler or care too much how they do in school? Ugh, I didn't even think about this when I wrote their story then I happened to look at my rolls for their generation and was like, "Crap!" I don't want to re-roll though. =/

Altin had the kid dumped on him out of the blue so he's not quite used to the idea. And he's going to get into some situations that keep him pretty busy, so I was going to play it as the kid sort of falls through the cracks and gets overlooked. But I rerolled for Perfect Careers instead.

To be fair, at least 98% of the people here use either really weird names or really weird spellings, in my opinion. xD If I'm misspelling any, it's probably because they're not called like Anne or Mark or something simple like that. There's only so many names like Sabina that I can figure out without typing, say, Sabrina, in its place when I'm not thinking. Tylar is another example. I think that's why the majority of my Sims get rather simple names, with Rhiannon and Glynnis being exceptions because of a little Welsh flair.

PS: I know it's a bit early in the Legacy, but if anyone ever wants any of my Sims, lemme know. I've never uploaded one before, but it'll be a nice learning experience if anyone needs me too.

I decided on Tylar because I wanted Tyson's clone to have a similar name, but I've always thought Tyler was too masculine, even though I know it can be for both genders. I saw Tylar somewhere, and liked it.

And to be fair, I'm a bit different about it if you change it for your own legacy. It's your character after all, just based off of my sim :) Like, you could rename Tylar to Tyler if you wanted to. (Just warn me first before I have a heart attack over here!)
Though if Kipp doesn't like horse/western in any way and Irish isn't Chinese, I may give you the death glare. My two exceptions to the "you can do whatever you want with my simmies once you upload them" rule.

I striped my sims, the only one with any expansion stuff is Irish, who I gave a few generic Chinese stuff in case somebody lazy installed her. Though she is soooo sad without CC :(

btw Becky, I made the most hilarious sim based off of Paprika :) Her name is Strawberry Archer, and she's very...BRIGHT. And insane :) And loves lime green and neon red a LOT :P She might pop into my legacy, she's just somebody I made to make Eaven Archer (and yes, you can misspell that one) have a little back story in my head.

Maddie I had ann error with my game once and nothing would help....eventually someone pinned me out that it was possible to have tour inerrant your latest game patched but not the base game. I had to check somewhere to see which patchversion was behind every ep and then manually Download and instal the newest for every ep. But I'm not sure its the problem cause somehow I remember that they changed something to fix this issue......but perhaps its worth a check? I just downloaded the new Meadow Glen (the one for Pets), and I really like it! I kind of want to move my family there, but at the same time I really don't want to mess with it. I'm not sure how much longer I will be able to last in AP though. My next heir rolled "rock star" as their career, and I just don't see how I can pull off such a profession in tiny, rural Appaloosa Plains. I mean, why would a famous musician live and work in an old town like that? I can't think of anything believable.

I have the old one and it works fine with Pets. I haven't encountered any issues (yet); thank the stars. I also extensively updated the town (put in venues and such) because it doesn't come with much, but yeah... I love it. I'm glad you and Cece have warmed up to it as well. :)

... How were you bad at the math? It's literally just addition and subtraction. The few formulas you have to memorize are just common sense. You sure you weren't taking the wrong classes? Calculus and stats are only necessary if you're going into accounting/commerce. If you're just going into administration the math involved is very simple. Maybe double check that, Emma.

(And I do hope none of that came across as rude. I mention it only because a few of my friends made the same mistake and took classes they didn't need to.)

But yeah. Either way I am going into commerce. Nothing better than asking that cute boy out for a study session <3.

So, I think I'm going to have to take a break from my legacy for a while. :( My computer's graphic card has died, and everyone thinks it's a motherboard issue. Which means I need to send my computer back to the builder in Michigan and wait for it to be repaired/a new one to be built. Hopefully I will have a shiny new desktop by the end of the month, but who knows. It may take two or three months depending on the problem. Meanwhile, I'll still be around on the forum and reading y'alls legacies, but no updates from me.

I hope you guys will still keep reading when I get back though. I'm seriously depressed right now and just so, so frustrated. I may try to install Sims on my macbook pro to see if it will run, but I doubt I'll be playing my legacy at all. I am going to miss it.

I cried for a good hour when I thought I'd have to give up on Neverglade, and that was just over having to move! I can't imagine having to put your legacy on hiatus for such a long time after its become so dear to you. But at least its not gone for good, right?

I would suggest trying to get your game onto your laptop. I run sims on my Macbook Pro and its runs fine, graphics are great, and I have all the EPs. The only thing to watch out for is the evil invisible CC that sometimes crops up, but it goes away eventually.

I got the game up and running on my laptop. (Yay!) I think I'm going to spend the next few weeks (or months :() renovating Meadow Glen a little bit. I like the look of the overall world, but I feel like it might be fun to personalize it a bit more. It's quite laggy and slow, and the graphics aren't what I'm used to. Not that I'm complaining, but I don't want to attempt to play without my desktop. My laptop might explode or something. ;)

Colleen & Cece: Look out for a nice, long PM from me within the next 24 hours. I have a plot cooking for the fifth generation that requires both of your aid/permission (as in, I want to ridiculously screw up a couple of your sims... as usual). LOL.

I will have a couple chapters up by Tuesday. I start school again tomorrow (blargh), but I'm trying to get chapters going on a regular basis so I can finish this legacy. I already have plans for how it will all end and what my next legacy will entail; so I need to get moving!

So, I've just been working on my new town & thought I'd give a little update (no pictures I'm afraid)

I've added a few families from various legacies, so far I have the following:-

Lukas Sperie and his five daughters - the elder two as teens and the triplets as children

Elijah and Scarlett McKinley and their three children - Nathaniel as a teen, Faye as a child & Anastasia as a toddler

Yuki Sabo and Aquarius Ocean with Fabio as a teen, Glimmer as a child and Raindrop & Tempest as toddlers

Boy and Danya Crist with Derrick as a teen and Ryan as a child

Tyson Marlin with Irish & Isadora as teenagers and Tylar as a child

Hopefully I've got the respective ages right for the various younger generations *fingers crossed*

Ugh, dunno if I can manage an update tonight, haha. Longest five hours of my life at work today.

I don't know who here has ever worked in food service before, but Jesus Christ, you don't know the meaning of the word 'fear' until as a hostess of a very slow-traffic restaurant you look down at your wait sheet and see a party of 19 with 5 kids, two parties of 13, three parties of 10, and innumerable parties of 5 through 8 all still waiting...along with about 890374870394872 2-tops, 3-tops, and 4-tops. Add in that there's only one hostess on besides yourself, that you don't have a busser for the day, and that the bigwig manager over your ENTIRE district picked TODAY of all days to oversee you and you're basically peeing your pants within ten minutes.

Ended up getting yelled at by a very pregnant lady who thought the phrase '30 to 45 minutes' shouldn't apply to her, by several large parties who didn't understand that a '45 minutes to an hour' quote doesn't mean you get to complain about your wait when it's only been 35 minutes, and by several smaller parties who didn't understand that when there's at least 2 or 3 servers on every large party and they can only have 3 tables a piece it means you're gonna have to wait around 15 to 20 minutes just to get a table.

That's all to say that my update is completely written out and my pictures are cropped...but I literally can't stay focused on anything for more than three seconds. AND my homework isn't all done. Good. God.

Okay, so I'm thinking (again) that I'll have to kill my legacy. I mentioned in the comments of my last chapter, replying to Giga, that my new town is lagging and freezing just as bad as AP was. So, I was contemplating yet another move. But the story reasons for this move would have to be connected to my Second Chance roll, and that would require staying in L.A. long enough for Kaiden and Becky to have their required child. And with the freezing and lagging playing is such a nightmare, I got in all of like two hours of play this whole weekend. And, I'm not happy about having to rush the story along, it's feeling very forced.
So, it's not looking good for the future of my legacy.

I just hope that when I finish my Riverview redo, it doesn't end up lagging and freezing, too.

The one thing I am happy about is that my last chapter ended in a good place for and ending, with Kaiden and Becky starting a new life in L.A.
If I don't continue, at least it isn't in the middle of a generation. I just wish redoing Riverview wasn't going to take so long. I'm concentrating on the community lots. When I get that done, I can just leave a lot of empty res lots and slowly fill them over time. Starting with a very low population actually fits in with the story I'm developing. Though it's weird to have a fully functioning town full of businesses without the population to support it...hmm...maybe I should add those over time as well.
Or just hand wave it, lol.

Aww, I'm sorry Melissa! But I completely understand how you feel. I tried playing on my laptop for just like 30 minutes, and the lag was unbearable. It's just no fun when you can't get the game to perform properly.

I can't wait for your Riverview legacy! If you get lags and freezes in your new legacy, you could always try to use the porter mod to move them to a fresh copy of the town. I'm not sure if that would work or not, but it's worth a thought. :)

But I do like the idea of sticking around for 10 generations in a single town.

I just can't play it like this. I try, but after an hour of constant freezing, I get too frustrated to continue. I mean I spend most of my time sitting and waiting for them to unfreeze. Then I get a few minutes of play and they freeze again.

Have you tried moving the town of them to a fresh town, where they aren't related to their relations etc? Maybe Traveller mod is a source of issues?

No, I haven't tried that. I don't really want to, honestly. I really wanted to keep Sage and Joff as genetic ancestors. And, I've kind of gone over the tipping point in terms of putting yet more effort into salvaging this legacy. I was not very excited by Kaiden's generation roll, and I'm even less excited by the roll for the next generation.
While I am a little sad by having to end early, I'm not all that attached to the arbitrary 10 generation legacy. This one made to a 6 generation legacy, and I'm fine with that. I'd rather pull the plug now than keep trying to resuscitate it.

Well, like you said Melissa, it did end on a good note. I will certainly miss your legacy, but if you aren't into the story/characters any longer (on top of the dreaded lag), then you definitely shouldn't be forced to finish.

I cannot friggin' wait for your next legacy! The setup was amazing and I'm sure your renovated Riverview will be gorgeous. :D *crosses fingers that you don't experience the same issues*

Calisims and everyone else having computer issues, I'm so sorry! I hope you get them all worked out. There is nothing more frustrating than that. I had a SMALL issue in my game and I almost ripped apart the internet trying to find a solution.
