It's not solely internet-based; it was a sociology and psychology term initially. But the internet is super susceptible to them. For instance, lolcats and Rickrolling are both better-known examples of memes. The key signs are the sudden and unintentional popularity, (usually) closely followed by the sudden lack of popularity as the Internet moves on to more interesting things.

Essentially, Cece had said she wanted to make Brandon's hat a running internet joke.

I've never had autonomous pranking, I'm guessing it's a mod?

The thing I hate about pranking is the same as my bugbear with a lot of the features in Generations - the lack of control over how your sims react to it. It would be fantastic if someone could come up with a mod which killed the autonomous reactions and allowed you to pick your sim's reaction.

I use a no autonomous pranking mod.
Without it, it not only have an entire town of red blinkies, but my bathroom sinks end up blinkied for generations, because no one uses them except to prank.

LOL, I just don't think in real life terms for Sims. They don't have bacteria born diseases or what not, they just have a universal hygiene bar, and the time it takes to wash hands isn't worth the small gain in hygiene motive. Also, they pee through their pants, so a simple hand washing isn't going help, anyway. ;)

It doesn't seem to big to me, i've attached a screenie of my savefolder so perhaps you can tell me which is the most important one to look at? I just figured because the error12 usually pops up when you're game becomes to big. Well, thats what I've read about it.

I'm going to see if I can figure out what my population is like, I've never tried that before :) but I will give it go, but first, I will go and try again, fresh day for me, perhaps now Satya is willing to move in! *crosses fingers*

It's now started, hope it won't be glitchy or anything (well not more then it already was that is...) but apparently, the game did safe, before it crashed down on me!

Thanks, Klev. I have most of the community lots done, the rest I can build as I play. I'm still working on houses and making the population. I'm planning to start with a smallpoulation, so I'm hoping I can be moved in and maybe get my first chapter up by Monday.

I'm starting with a small population of characters. I set my immigration settings on SP very high, so there won't be a lot of immigrants, but I'm sure some will come in. I'm not placing all the rabbithole rugs right away, to help stop the flow of immigrants to fill jobs. I'll have all the service ones like grocery, bookstore, bistro, etc, and most of the career ones. But I'm starting out without a military, police or crime rabbithole. I'm also considering removing the stadium rug from the school temporarily until I roll a sports career.
Over time I will add new CAS Sims and also allow some SP immigration (though I will tweak any immigrants to fit what I want in the town).

Mmm, I'm using a lot of buildings by My Sims Realty, so sharing it could be problematic. I could possibly put it up on mediafire and share the link through a PM.
But keep in mind that I'm not going to finish the world before I start using it, I plan on adding more community lots and houses over the course of the legacy. So what I'd be sharing is a not even half-finished world that is missing some rabbitholes and has almost no houses.
Also, I'm not keeping track of what Store or CC items I'm using.
If you still really want it despite all that, I can try to get it on mediafire before I populate it.

Thanks, Maddie, but really most of the credit goes to My Sims Realty. I took those buildings from their towns. I did change the roofing, wallpaper and landscaping, and sometimes changed the windows and doors, but the basic architecture isn't mine. If I was building everything myself from scratch, this project would take three times as long.

Well, I'm having a fun issue. When I loaded Sims today, I had no mods and no saved games. So I quit and looked into my Electronic Arts folder in my documents, and found no mods, no saves, the whole folder and all its contents were like in a newly installed game. All my saves and the whole mods folder were gone.
I searched my PC and found my original electronic arts folder had somehow moved itself into my Bioware folder. I have no idea how that happened.
I moved my original folder back, and now my game won't start.
So, I'm probably going to have to reinstall the whole thing and hope it works.

But I'm really hating Sims right now.

After zipping up my Sims 3 folder, I discovered that I could restore my EA folder back to a version from Thursday, so I'm going to try that before I reinstall.
I've made a bunch of buildings and Sims since Thursday, and worst case scenario (if the game even loads) is that I lose those, but even they should be in my Library that I zipped up, so ideally I'd be able to restore those.

A few questions that I need clarification on, please:

1. A sim in the police career or the journalism career, going trash rummaging (to do reports on sims). Sometimes they get gems from doing this. These gems weren't collected by any of the methods listed in the Collector career, nor were they collected by any method listed in the Adventurer career. I don't like random junk cluttering my sims' inventories. Can gems collected in this manner be sold, or do I have to use debug mode to delete them for zero simoleons? I am assuming they can't be cut, as gem cutting is specified as part of the Collector career.

2. The current generation has completed its goals (which did not include perfect children, deadbeat parents, or similar child-dependent goals). The current generation can move out when the heir reaches YA. What about any younger siblings of the heir, can I move them out with their parents even if they haven't reached YA? Or do I have to keep the siblings in the house until they reach YA even though the way they turn out is irrelevant?

3. Idle career. If this is rolled up for a C2 career the rules suggest that as a strategy I maximise the relevant skill as kids & teens. This appears to be worded as a valid strategy rather than as a exception to the rule. What if the career is a C1 career - in this case musician (rock star)? Can I skill the heir in an instrument before they reach YA? If so, that kind of defeats the purpose of the rule.

4. Idle career. If a sim has a career where relationships with co-workers are important, how do I avoid befriending people who may be in the same career - or might be in that career in the future. Does my sim have to never make friends with any child or teen they're at school with, in case they later turn out to be co-workers?

5. Idle career. "Your sim won't make any effort in his/her career" Does this mean I have to always choose for them to slack off at work? They can never choose the work hard option?

6. Idle career. Does this apply to both sim & spouse, or just to one of them?

Hi, Kyna, welcome to the challenge.

1. You can't sell gems found by rummaging through the trash. You can set their value to 0 to delete them. You can get gems cut if you want to keep them as decoration, the restrictions are only about what you can or can't sell.

2. You can move out the previous generation, but the younger siblings have to stay. I asked that question from the challenge's creator when I first started and that's what she said. I agree with you that it's kind of pointless, since there's no 'real point in keeping them around if they aren't part of the perfect children or any other goal requiring their participation. Maybe that is a rule we could discuss changing. (This challenge changes a lot over time)

3 -6. The Idle Career questions. I fought against adding that rule to the challenge, tbh. My understanding of it is that your Sims are restricted from doing anything positive to advance their careers from the time they become YAs. So, yes, you could prepare in advance by maxing the relevant skills and making friends with everyone in the neighborhood on the chance they will you co-workers. It does kind of defeat the purpose of that rule. I'm guessing those suggestions were put in to appease people like me who really hated that rule. So, it's really up to you how much you want to play to the letter of the rule or to the spirit of it. If you really want to do Idle Careers from a purist perspective, you could abstain from having your heir skill as a child/teen. Or you can work around it by having them skill as much as possible before the generation starts.

I can see why the rule is that all children must age up to YA, even if their parents have met their own goals. Otherwise with the 4 kids I'm faced with next generation (with heir being number 1), I'd wait until the heir was a teen before I had the other three.

My daughter discovered this challenge on a knitting blog she follows, and told me about it. She's blogging about her challenge, but I've never blogged any of the challenges I've played before. I have a low-end computer with a lousy graphics card, and I know some people can get very critical of the quality of graphics in Legacy stories. Maybe on my next playthrough of this challenge, I'll consider blogging it.

Besides, I've just moved out generation 3, and generation 4 has just had their first child & heir, and I don't have any pictures of the first 3 generations.

Generation 4 goals: couple, 2 children, heir #1, primary income job hopper, secondary income farmer, expansionist (planning to add a cellar for the inventing and chemistry station he'll use as he hops jobs, and throwing in a sculpting station as well), fashion diva.

Generation 5 (just born): couple, 4 children, heir #2, primary income music (rock star), secondary income education. Idle career. Tattoo addict.

The trash rummaging question arose out of something my daughter and I were discussing in a previous generation. What about other objects acquired by trash rummaging by a police officer or journalist (e.g. bubble bath, rubber ducks, books, etc) - are they allowed to be sold? They were acquired as part of meeting a career requirement.

I assume that since photographer, ghost hunter, and inventor are Ambitions professions, my job hopper needs to reach level 5 in those. The alternate of 1 sim week would only apply to the freelance scientist job he rolled. The last time I tried to play with photography (just after WA was released) I found it very glitchy and extremely frustrating when the text saying what the photo would be of didn't match whatever I was attempting to photograph. I did not enjoy the experience, so I'm not really looking forward to his stint in the photography career.

Kyna, several people here blogging their legacies don't have great graphics. We really aren't critical about that kind of thing (I know what you mean about other legacies, but we aren't like that here), so if you feel at all like blogging your legacy, don't be worried about sharing it here. Even if you have to start in a later generation because you don't have pics for the earlier ones. We'd love to have your daughter share her legacy here as well.

If you experience glitches with any career, you don't have to play it. Feel free to reroll photographer.

I guess we should discuss the trash rummaging. Since those are career related finds, maybe we should allow selling of those items. (We make decisions on these issues by majority opinion, so whenever a question like this comes up, we discuss and decide as a group what to do.)

Hi guys. Sorry I’ve been so absent lately. I haven’t really been following the forum or keeping up with your blogs. I lost my job last week, and I’ve just been really depressed about it. It was just a part time position, because officially I’m a “student”, but I don’t know what to do with myself when I’m not working. I tried registering for some spring classes, but I signed up too late and they were all full.

Anyway, the bad news is I’m *probably* not going to be able to keep up with my legacy any longer. My desktop computer is broken, as some of you all may remember, and I was going to get it replaced but now that I’m unemployed that probably isn’t going to happen. I tried playing on my laptop, but the game freezes and crashes at least once every fifteen minutes to an hour. I just can’t stand it, so I haven’t been doing any Simming recently. I miss it so much it’s not even funny.

I’ll try to stick around I guess, but it’s just no fun when you aren’t playing the game. It’s sort of hard to be a part of the community when you really don’t have anything to add. I hope you all understand. Good luck with everything, and I wish you all the best.

As for the idle career thing, just to bring up discussion again :P.......I like the idea behind it, but I don't get the "skill up while you're still allowed to" bit. I think it should be more in its right if it would start at birth. Don't people who are idle are like that all their lives? They don't push everything in childhood, and then all of a sudden decide to not do that anymore.....

as for moving out the parents......i'm not sure why parents should move out....Though, in cece's story it did make sense, because of all the memories that hurt, but otherwise, it would be more logical to let the children move out.
But since I can understand people who do not want to have to move to a new place all the time, I think perhaps it should be, No moving out the parents until all their children are YA, you are allowed to move out your heir before that? I do think that the amount of children and raising them is a goal.

Melissa, YAY! for having your game working again! sometimes I think computer are sentient, moving your files around just to fool with you, or piss you off.

There have been many patches since I last attempted photography, so the glitches I experienced may well be gone. Unless it's like the Sims 2 piano/fun glitch, where they'd patch it and then break it again in the next EP.

Part of the fun of playing this challenge for me is to mix up my gameplay a bit, and try content that I don't normally try. So I figure it's time I gave photography another go.

And I think I will try NOT skilling up my idle wanna-be rockstar sim, at least not in music. That'll be challenging for me, since I normally skill, skill, skill all through toddler, childhood, and teen. Typically I max out an instrument during teen years, sending teens out to play in public locations, with the side benefit that they end up knowing enough people to make charisma easy if they need it as an adult. For story purposes, my next heir will be a sim who is tone-deaf and with no sense of rhythm, so he never gets the hang of music, but still wants to be a rockstar. Poor Eben :lol:

The only one I really refuse to play is Born with it. I just can't do it, it's no fun and it would make me miserable to play with mismatching sims :( Idle would be nice for me actually, especially for a rabbithole job :P I like to focus more on the family, which is why I'm sulking a bit with deadbeat. But I won't take that one off my roll, I just might use a joker if I get it with a couple again. I see it better as a single parent roll.

2. You can move out the previous generation, but the younger siblings have to stay. I asked that question from the challenge's creator when I first started and that's what she said. I agree with you that it's kind of pointless, since there's no 'real point in keeping them around if they aren't part of the perfect children or any other goal requiring their participation. Maybe that is a rule we could discuss changing. (This challenge changes a lot over time)


I find that sending any younger siblings to boarding school can be helpful.
However, I agree that if you wanted to, you should be able to move out the parents WITH the younger siblings. eg if you have moved into gen 2, the gen 1 should be able to move out with any other children left over.
It can be quite annoying to look after the younger siblings

Guys, i have a question. I know that we said no to the Inheritance, but I really want it as part of the plot. For those of you who do not mind major spoilers, could you please answer as to whether or not you think of this as acceptable:

Ok, so if an elder dies, but just before they do, I get the inheritance lr then tell it as though it is their savings from their entire life that they wanted to pass on to the next generation. Would that be considered ok? And yes, if you really must know it is Blue who is about to die. I want Auburn to tell Coral that Blue wanted his money to be passed on to her to help her with the kids I was lucky actually, I just checked his days to transition status and was shocked It doesn't matter if not, but it would be nice and sweet, plus something to spend those last points on.

*face palms* I've been trying to figure out what piece of CC was messing up my game over the better half of the past two days... narrowed it down to nothing. Literally went through all couple gigs of CC, restarting the game each time before realizing that some of the hair you download from that site comes zipped with the resource.cfg file... but it's the OLD one, and somehow it overwrote mine and messed everything up. same here, I never played through the first gens, normally i'd get bored when the family had so much money they'd swim in it. I never realized all the possibilities inside the game, this legacy and its blogs, and going through several generations has taught me so many new things about the game! Yeah. I did the same thing. I had several saved game files because I'd get bored and make a new one. Then later on I'd go back and delete them. Lol. The thing is I'm only on the 2nd generation and my game is already freaking out. The only new thing I added was a few hairs and Master Controller Cheats thingy. Maybe something was wrong with one of those? I wouldn't think one of those would cause the blue screen of death but....I shall see. It's even taking my game like 20 min to load! This is very annoying. -_-

EDIT: Okay I don't have the "blue screen of death" that everyone knows about. Perhaps I should have worded it differently. What's happening to mine is there is a blue screen like Sims color blue. I can still see my control panel and everything and pause and play ect and I can see all the Sim's pictures on the side but everything else is blue. I can't seem to find anything about this. I was going to use the print screen so I'd have a picture but I have no program on this computer to paste it in. =/

have you got error trap from twallan as well?? It creates logs and tells you whats wrong, though I don't know how to read those logs, so I upload them for twallan to check out, then he can tell you what to do about it.

Although I think I have bad news, I just checked another save file and everything shows up like it's supposed to. It's just my legacy save that has the blue screen. *cries* I'll keep working on it later because right now it's 5:20am and I haven't went to sleep yet. you don't have back up saves?? That sucks.........have you checked you save folder in the sims folder? Someone once explained to me, that if the folder containing your save file has .bad behind it, it's corrupted and beyond repair.....

I recommend starting to use the save though, it prompts to save your game in a cycle, you can set the amount of time you want between saves, the amount of back-ups etc. It saved my ass with the error 12 thing. Cause I have it prompt every 15 minutes (thought I don't actually save every time...) and cycle through 4 save files.

So this may be a stupid question, but I know for a fact that I've had games with this exact folder name before.

There's a folder in my Sims 3 folder named "WTF" that contains an empty set of Mod/Packages/Override folders. Is this standard for Sims 3 or did I just get really drunk one night? Both are equally possible, to be honest.

Semi-related: never attempt to redo the passwords to your internet accounts when you've been drinking, I'm still not sure what the password to my second email account is.

Also I checked the size of my mod folder. 3.14GB. I realize this is of course COMPLETELY INSANE but it's yet to cause me any problems so I haven't actually gotten around to doing anything about it yet.

Ugh, I'm so confused. I didn't physically back up anything but I do see backup saves in my saves files. Like I said I never had major problems and I could always fix the small ones by Googling it so I know nothing technical about this game. So I don't know what to do. =/

My mod folder is only 906mb. I'm not sure what I have downloaded in the installer though. I forgot how to check that. Lol. But yes, making drunk decisions always ends up bad. Haha.

The colour screen is a glitch I've had, Jessica. The only way to fix it is exit game without saving as soon as it happens. If you saved... yeah you're f-d. I'm sorry but there is no way to fix it that I've encountered. However I've also found that if you don't save when it happens, it rarely crops up again. I had it a total of 3 times in my Starr legacy, and zero times in my Sabo Legacy so far.

DAMMIT! I saved. I was worried I would lose everything so I saved. A few weeks ago I was playing and all of sudden it froze. I'd been playing for 6 hours and a LOT had happened. Usually it unfreezes but it didn't so I lost everything! Which is why I quickly saved it this time so I wouldn't lose it again. Go figure that would hurt me more than help me. So I'm just screwed? I'll have to do another legacy?

I've had that problem and saved and couldn't fix it. I did have alt saves though so twallans saver mod rescued the situation. It's hard to lose a legacy :(

I don't have the saver mod. Lol. I guess I should prepare for these situations. =[ Oh well, at least I was only on my 2nd generation. If I was on 7 or 8, I'd probably throw my computer out the door. I would be devastated. But I've already rolled for my first generation in my new legacy. I've already got the blog page set up and will link it when I have a couple of chapters. Bright side, at least now I don't have to figure out how to do the deadbeat parents goal. Haha.

May I ask what this glitch is about? A blue screen? How can you save if it's a blue screen? Or it is just a blue overlay thing, not like the blue screen on a tv?

Usually its blue, but I've heard other people having other colours (Can't confirm though). You still have your save bar and I think the sim's info/needs bar but its been a while so i can't remember. It's just the actual game screen goes kaboom. Usually it happens to me when I'm moving the camera while going out of the tab screen. It pops me behind a wall and then just won't show anything else. Its like the game is still playing in the background, but you can't see any of it.

I take a lot of different angles/facial expressions of each scene, plus whatever adorableness they randomly do (Jacob pouting, Kenzie freaking out, Sabina shooting guys down... etc.) And yes, no joke, EVERY TIME I send Sabina out to interview people someone will autonomously flirt with her. Usually Angel Starr or one of the Sperie boys. Tsk tsk. To her credit she has never accepted an autonomous flirt.

I'm so sorry about everyone's crashes and game problems. I've never had a game be more trouble than the Sims series. But then, I've never had a game that is so involving.

I take way more screenshots than I could ever use. I shoot multiples of every scene, and I also shoot a ton of stuff that gets cut out while I'm putting together the chapter.

I agree on that melissa, it is a very massive game, but it can get annoying, just rigfixed everything as well....so now its just wait and see if it did the trick ;)

as for the screenies, it depends, if I have a story to go with and certain shots I want to take, I can find the perfect picture while in game, so I don't have to take several, I its a lot of random events I just shoot away and let the pictures decide what happens......and then I usually end up with lots of pictures!

well I do actually feel better, perhaps it has worked like that for me :) I started cleaning the house right after (so did not want to do that today!) I use to turn on some sad sad sad ballads and even sing along very loudly.......but having a two year old running around prevents me from doing that, cause she either sings those songs along as well, or she starts asking for her favorite music.

You do realize that if your sims life sucks, so should yours! it works both ways hehe.

On a completely diff subject, does any of you know if theres a mod that keeps the objects in a sims inventory when you kick them out?? I'm going crazy with all those high school diploma's and "most likely to" thingies!

To get rid of those diplomas/most likely to/paintings I either build a terrifying third basement waaaay under the house and just stuff everything down there... or one by one hang it on the wall and shift+click delete it.

I make my sims lives suck because I'm a sadist and enjoy watching things in pain. Just be happy that I've gone from hurting my friends to hurting bunches of pixels on a screen (Trust me, my newest group of friends are VERY happy with my latest game obsession).

I've been on a downloading frenzy this morning/afternoon. Which is probably not the best thing in the World for my computer but oh well.

I downloaded: dead bodies, blood stains, crime scene stuff and guns! I'm really enjoying this law enforcement story. My Gen 1 is supposed to be a Super spy but I'm thinking more CSI than Burn Notice

I also downloaded some poses and the pose player. I tried it once but I couldn't never get them to work properly. Hopefully they will work this go round. Also I have a quick question. I'm having trouble getting everyone together for my photos. I know I can shift click add to household but is there an easier way to get them out of my household? I know I can move them out but then I'd have to figure out where they lived(Which I can never find twice anyways.) or it might bring more funds in. Or should I just make a copy of my legacy save and take the photos there and keep going back to that save when no one wants to stay where they are supposed to. I'd like to know what you guys do to get everyone to cooperate. Thank you!

Usually I shift+click to add in, and then move them out with via phone or edit town depending on if I have money to burn (I haaaate it when my family funds hit over 100k).

That said I rarely bring in more than one or two out-of-main-family sims at a time for scenes.

You can also use MC to add them back to their original house... click on their original house-->nraas-->MC-->add sim :)

For photos I can't get in normal gameplay I have a second copy of my hood with everyone I need in one house and aging and Story Progression turned off. And since it's not the real hood it doesn't matter where I move them back out to.

And then whenever I need to I "update" it by replacing it with a new copy of my savefile.

For instance, in the scene that took place in Oxy's office I couldn't get the lighting right in the proper game so I built it in the second hood and just left the ceiling and one of the walls off so it got more light.

On the topic of new legacies... (No I'm not ditching mine and at least so far the glitches and issues I'm having are annoying but minimal at worst. I've even been safe from the evil photography glitch that Becky once mentioned).

Another MTS user gave me his so far unreleased world free of content to play around with after I mentioned my inability to use CAW (Mac user), and I'm in the process of building everything for it. Cali, you have no idea how much I respect you right now. I finally looked at Riverview and saw how huge a map it is. My new world is medium. O_O How the EFF did you make it yours in such a short span of time?

Basically, asking for permission from people to use their sims again. My first 5 gens of my next legacy are "celebrity" based careers so I'm thinking of giving the city a very upscale and modern feel.

I know how you feel, Ali, DA:O is still one of my favorite games ever. I couldn't even count how many times I've played through. Have fun! But don't be too scarce, lol.
Don't worry, I won't be disappearing entirely, I still enjoy sims more!

Unfortunately though my playing time in general is limited due to real life...

Cece: First attempt starter home. Currently it's on a 25x20 lot, but I'm gonna put it on a smaller one (15x10) to make it seem a lot bigger than it is. Also, what could be more warm and welcoming than stone and chrome, ay? Nothing, that's what. It still needs some tweaking, but comes in under $16,500... Just. So, lots of tweaking really.

I've prettied up a couple community lots to show. Obviously they could ALL use a lil help but I just want to get everything set up as a base outline before adding in final details to make the lots look nice.

So I'll be editing it sooner or later. The actual building also serves as the military base and police office.

Ugh I'm having freezing troubles again. Restarting my computer fixes those issues (for the most part) but it also makes my CC hairs go poof for a while. Which is never fun when the heir does not LOOK RIGHT WITHOUT HER HAIR. *Eye twitch*

My computer hates me. That's the only explanation.
