I am actually quite partial to Showtime myself. I haven't really played through the careers but, so far, my favorite thing has been creating an arcade type lot a la Dave & Busters style (Yalena and Jeanie's hangout spot) with pool tables, foosball, darts, arcades, and skee ball. I even stuck in a few of the golf ranges and, if I could figure out how to recolor that gothic backdrop, I would make it look like a "virtual" indoor golf shooting range.

I second the glad that Reya will be back! I miss my nightly readings. You too Buckley. Hope you can figure out your make-up issue. I can't think of anything off the top of my head that would fix it other than going back vanilla and slowly adding things in to see what's causing it.

Hi flanah! Welcome back! I don't see any problem with including twallan's careers in the rolls. This challenge can be adapted to a player's personal preferences and playing style, so it seems just fine to me. (If it's not, I'm sure someone else will speak up and correct me.) :)

Ali, what part takes a while to load? One time it took my world an hour to load so I ran dashboard and found I had a rogue sims 2 pack hiding in my CC. Taking that out fixed it immediately.

Uhm. Some questions.

1. How do I make a sim sit down on the ground anywhere, aside from meditation?

2. So, for those of you experienced with the three new showtime careers. Do they work in "normal" towns, like my Barnacle Bay, or do I need to install stages or something special?

I use poses to make them sit on the ground.
The only other way to do it in game is to watch stars, which is a romantic interaction and therefore not suitable for every situation.

I haven't played much with the SHT careers, but there are some parts of the careers that can be done without adding stages, like the singing telegrams for the singer career, and you can perform for tips anywhere, like busking an instrument. But you will need to install stages to perform. My understanding is you can't use a LN bar with NPC bartender at any venue you want to perform in, you need a SHT venue with a proprietor NPC.
I have no idea what you need to add to a lot like a park that makes it work for the careers, though.

For sitting on ground, there's also the help with homework interaction. You could start that interaction then use move objects to reposition your Sim once they are sitting by the teen/child.

The game itself is taking twice as long as it used to (6 minutes rather than 3) to load to the point where I select the save file to load but the save files are taking the longest time to load.

Edit: since the problems started I've downloaded CC Magic & used that to combine my CC but it hasn't had much effect tbh

You only need the 64x64 if you are placing the pre made big park or the new stadium lot.
The new stadium can actually replace the base game one as it still houses the Sports career.
There are smaller venue lots you can add, too, in the pre made commercial lots bin.

I do like Redwood Harbour, but you're right, it's tiny compared to the worlds I usually play. Quite a few community lots are missing, and nothing from Pets or Showtime. Pity about the lack of pet lots, as I think it'd work well for horses.

I already rolled for generation two of my legacy, and they rolled Change of Scenery. So Laura'll live in Redwood Harbour, because it fits with her story, but I'll almost certainly move the family to Great Bear next generation. I love Great Bear <3
Don't feel like a traitor! The Nothing Is Free challenge is a lot of fun, and quite a few people here seem to be playing it (including me!). I don't blog it though, because I'm too lazy :-D

Thanks guys! For the first hour after I got the call, I was super excited and grinning. It's just been so long since I've seen a result to the applications and resumes I've been sending out like crazy. My last interview was in October. v.v

Regarding floor plans, this website (http://www.thevictorianhouse.com/homeplan.htm) might be a good place to look. I don't really know what English style farmhouses would look like but the site looks like it has a lot of authentic styles. I didn't look too in depth though. I love the one on the top of the page and want to find that floorplan to make myself!

That's a cool website heaven! Thanks for the link. :) I'm currently attempting to build a Victorian manor (for my legacy), and it's not turning out well. I'm loosely using this house (http://sun-surfer.com/photos/2012/02/Victorian-house-Redlands-California.jpg) as my inspiration, but since we can't have diagonal stairs I'm having to adapt it quite a bit. Question: Does the octagonal roof always show up even when it's under another piece of roof? Like this: (Pardon the mess. I just started working on it tonight, so it still needs A LOT of work.)

Buckley, I made a house that had an octagonal roof like that. It doesn't show up in the house if you are on that floor but from the outside view, yes. If you want to take a look at it, it's Cherry Blossom (http://modthesims.info/download.php?t=432270). I do wish EA had made it so that the inside exist or there was one that was a "wrap around" rather than full roof. Same with diagonal stairs...really EA?

There are so many build aspects that drive me crazy: no matching build sets. Windows and doors are not modular or placeable like furniture (half tile placement), no diagonal stairs, diagonal roofs are a bitch to get right, plants/bushes aren't recolorable (or at least don't have as many colors as they should, like the agapanthus...a white version would be nice), cfe to do attached garages and shaped stairs (though at least there is SOME way to do it). My list could go on and on and I am sure there is much I am missing.

And that house is gorgeous. I hope that it turns out as lovely as the picture. I even love those strange colors.

I am redoing almost all of Sunset Valley before continuing my legacy.
I haven't been able to use any custom worlds without a ton of lag, but EA worlds are decent, not too bad. But then there's the problem of I hate the towns. So I got a version of Sunset Valley without all the lots. I'm almost done, I've been working on it almost all day. Just a couple more dozen houses to download then place, and a few families to make to throw in.

In just my mods folder I've got 1.15 GB, and then for all my store downloads, and things I install in Sims Launcher, it's about 2.75 GB.

There's a setting in SP, probably under the careers tab called 'allow teen job push' or something like that. Set it to false and teens stop getting jobs.
And there's a setting for self-employed careers, I'm not sure if AMB professions count in that. iirc there's also some setting for pushing the ghost hunter career.

I adore it. For Abrielle's gazillion children, I would have never survived without it. Granted, it's rather like a big, swinging cheat since, while they are in it, babies and toddlers' motives do not decay. However, if that is considered too cheaty, Buzzler has a mod to make it more realistic.

I'm combining this with the Differences in the Family Tree Challenge, but the rules of this challenge trump the DITFT rules. And the adventuring generation of the DITFT mean Samantha has to get all three Visas to level 3 and has to max photography.

Her traits are: Adventurous, Athletic, Commitment Issues, Brave, Disciplined. Her LTW is to be a seasoned traveler.

She's already had her first child and is pregnant with her second (and maybe third and maybe fourth). Both pregnancies were caused by the same male and the first child is a female named Stephanie. She's athletic and excitable.

But she's off on vacation currently working on getting Pangu's Ax. Which will make Egypt and France easier. And I think I've just stumbled into the quest chain that unlocks Pangu's Ax :D

Updated the Roller App to include SHT professions... Completely rewrote it in a new language so EVERYONE should be able to use it now, as it's an executable file "*.exe". It's attached to this post, and I'll be updating the link on the blog.

This doesn't work on my mac, I try to run it and opens up the base code for me to edit. All the previous versions worked though. What was the problem with the previous file type? Were people having trouble getting it to work?

Haha, me either! I've used the clothes and some of the items a little bit, but that's about it. Sometimes I feel like EA has too much control over my wallet...

As for genies, all I know is that for 30K Lifetime happiness points you can get a genie to magically grant you 100,000 simoleons. Three times over. I was so tempted to do that for my McKinley's, but I resisted. :cool: (<-- random emoticon. Cause I like it.)

I was considering using the genie in one of my Gen 3 plots... but decided to bring back a different character instead. Mostly cause genies are fugly. And there is no fug allowed in my legacy.

The singing career was pretty glitched for me. Melody had three steady gigs that would get cancelled sporadically and she'd have to audition all over again to get them. And sometimes the game would count her as still in the middle of a gig even though it had ended the night before or (in one case) three DAYS ago. I had to reset her to fix it but I'm pretty sure that was just a lucky fix. I got bored near the end of Melody's life which is why so few of her gigs got into the story.

Cyykosis - One thing I noticed when I was playing with the roller was my inability to roll something individually. For example, I got single parent first gen and then second chance for second gen with one of the careers being the same as the first generation. So I was going to reroll (mostly just playing since I haven't actually started one yet) and when I clicked everything off except careers it gave me an unhandled exception error. So perhaps an option to turn off each category and roll for something by itself? Since I haven't played, I really have no other suggestions about the actual rolls.

Summary of what they do (source: the sims wiki):
~Magically clean Sim - Boosts a Sim's hygiene to maximum.
~Make house spotless and sparkly - Instantly cleans the entire lot.
~Summon food - Summons perfect quality food. Almost all types of food may be summoned, with the exception of Ambrosia.
~Banish Sim - Removes an unwanted visitor from the lot.
***~Ensorcel Sim - Mind controls a Sim for 4 hours. The Ensorcelled Sim will get the Ensorcelled moodlet for 4 hours, and their PlumbBob will glow purple. The moodlet has no positive or negative effects, and is cast on Sims outside the active family. "Mind control" simply means that the target Sim is temporarily added to the active family, with no autonomy. Hence, this cannot be used to have more than 8 active Sims in the household.

Thanks heaven! I'm kicking myself for not handling my errors in that. Individual rolling would be a handy feature too! I will definitely work on that :) I always love feedback (good or bad!) especially since I'm still a student (1 more year!). It helps me and other programmers out there considerably (as long as they listen... *shakes fist at EA*). Even though EA sucks at that, I'm still looking into interning there... well more so at Bioware but they probably get thousands of applicants :(

I'm kind of in the same boat right now. My McKinleys just don't seem to be holding my interest atm, but nevertheless I'm currently working on trying to get enough material for an update. Anyway, to answer your question, blogging is what usually keeps me motivated to play my legacy, but if you don't have time to write about your family why not just show us a few pictures of your different generations? Also, even if you don't blog, try to keep a story in your head about what is going on with your different Sims. It makes playing so much more fun. :)

Gen 2 itself has the trait. So all of your founder's kids must share a trait, preferably one that the parent has as well. Because that makes sense.

If rolled for gen 1, the founders must both have the trait (or re-roll). Maybe we should clarify that on the blog. I thought we did that already.

Anyway I don't have problems sticking with the same sims obviously so I can't relate too much; my second legacy is even a continuation of my first one.
When I lose interest, it's in Sims 3, not in my legacy family.

When I lose interest in an heir I take a step back and survey the story I gave them and all the surrounding characters, then focus on whatever grabs my attention. If I get bored of an heir but I like their child, I'll just put extra focus on the kids and completely ignore the adults. but then again, I'm already working towards Gen 21 of my continuous legacy family. Writing out a blog and having people read and comment on it really does help with motivation.

Hi! I'm really enjoying the random legacy challenge, but I have some questions.
1. For my founder, my primary income is in journalism. My sim has gotten work opportunities asking her to write books. Is it cheating to write these since it makes money? I was thinking it went along with journalism...
2. For my second generation, I rolled single parent with help and three children. Do all of the children have to be from the same mother (my heir is a male), or can they have different mothers since I think that would be interesting lol

1) Opportunities are always allowed, even if you get money from them. So it is okay for your founder to write books to complete the opportunity ONLY.

2) The children can be mothered by one mother, more mothers, or even multiple fathers if you have the proper mods!

1. It's okay to do those opportunities, yes. =)
2. In any generation, the children can be from whomever you want. There's one roll, half-siblings, that forces you to use different mates for your sim each time, but there's nothing that says you can't do that without rolling half-siblings. Also, in single parent with help, not all of the kids have to be your heir's. The "helper" could contribute to your three total children by having a child of their own grow up with your heir's children. If you wanted to do that, anyway.

Right, I've been getting really annoyed at myself recently. I've been playing quite a bit, I'm into generation three with generation 4 just about to be born. But I am way behind on my blog. To be honest, I got a little bored with generation 2's story. But now I will make myself write my blog up until generation 3 takes over. Hopefully I will be able to catch up in a couple of weeks or so. I don't know how many new chapters you guys will have to read, quite a lot has happened.

I have more to say about some generations than others, really. Some generations last me 10 chapters, others 20. x.x

The only thing that could possibly get me excited for a Weather EP is the addition of aliens... I'd be so conflicted. I NEED aliens, but weather is something I've never enjoyed in the sims.

It's chalked full of dents, and my mom just sent me pictures of her car- There are at least half a dozen holes in her back window. And the irony of it all is that I'm moving to a new house in less than a week. A house that has an attached garage with an electronic garage door.

It really was! To answer your question, there's this really interesting new world that will hopefully be coming out before Supernatural. It looks like it could have some potential as a good magic world, what with the gypsy camp and overall historic vibe of the town. Aww. *pouts* I was hoping for Brooke...

But yeah, it feels like with every new expansion pack the lag gets more intolerable. My loading time went from like 2 minutes to over 5 minutes recently, but I did just move my family to a large new world. Have you tried CC Magic? It can help reduce package file lag.

I've been having some loading issues of my own. Sometimes my save just gets stuck and refuses to load, so I have to restart my computer and try again. Yeah, this wastes a lot of time. It may be a background program that the game doesn't like, or something.

Yeah, my load time for my save file is ridiculous. I don't know that it has to do with CC or not because, if I open another save file in the same AGS profile, it loads faster. It seems to depend on how long I have played/what's going on in the town. Although, my no CC AGS profile loads in seconds. I should probably look into combining some more package files.

Another reason for me to start a RL at some point. I've basically broken all the original legacy rules and am now just doing a "play 10 generations and make some shit up about it and post it for people to read" legacy.

I took out about 0.6GB of CC and the load time went down by about 8 mins or so.
I need to make a note of the names of the items i never ever use and then delete them.

In other news, the first child of generation 4 has just been born.

Anarthiel: I had that glitch in my sister's NIF game on her laptop. If it happens once, it'll happen again. What I did to get her babies back was "reset everything" (Nraas option when you click townhall -> master controller). Then once the baby is poof gone gone you click your active lot and "add sim". The baby SHOULD be there.

But thats assuming the baby is on the lot, but unclickable and not in your active family's portrait panel.

Hi everybody! My name is Hayley, and I'm new here. I stumbled on Calisim's legacies while reading her current story blog, We Are Stardust, read hers, then started reading all the random legacy blogs. Reading them has been such a treat, I decided to give it a whirl and start my own!

I just had an issue I wanted to clarify. I apologize if it has been asked and answered or if I somehow missed it - I searched through this thread to the best of my ability and read the legacy blog several times to see if it was answered, but I didn't find anything. Anyway, I'm not entirely clear on how I go about rolling careers for my job hopper Sim. I know I have to roll ten times, but do I simply base it on the career lists? The standard and nonstandard careers are both numbered 1-14, so should I just set the random number generator from 1-28, or should I roll to see if each career will be a standard or nonstandard, then roll to see what the specific career should be? Also, I see that some people have rolled none as an option for job hoppers - how does that happen? I'm just a little confused, which happens easily, I'm afraid.

While I'm thinking about it, am I correct in assuming that buying objects in buy debug mode is considered cheating? Traveling has caused some glitches in my game, so I tend to use buy debug to get the cameras and nectar making objects, but I'm thinking that falls under the cheating rule. Would it?

Bronwynn- the 5 star celebrity goal is just for your heir (correct me if I'm wrong guys)

Hayley-You would roll under the career type section and then the corresponding section for each roll I believe. As for none, it is only available if your sim is not your heir/founder aka spouse/help.

Brownynn: Actually 5-star celebrity applies only to your heir. And that roll isn't as hard as it sounds. While the child is a baby/not yet born try to get their parents star level as high as you can (3 or 4 should be do-able) then have them become best friends with the heir. That heir will grow up a child with at least 2 or 3 stars to their name from being best friends with their celebrity parents. And that should be enough to make getting to 5 stars easy.

hjaxon: Woo. Okay. Let's start with the easy question. I - believe- buydebug is allowed only when it constitutes glitches. I sort of just found out my own legacy save game absolutely refuses to let me load travel worlds.

The way I roll for job hopper is by hand (well, paper and pen and random.org). You know how you rolled for job hopper in the first place? You do that exact same thing another 10 times and write down what you get for primary career. Those are your ten jobs. You likely won't get through the whole list during the generation.

Hi Hayley! I'm so happy we have more people doing legacies. I was starting to fear they'd fall out of fashion in favor of no-rules blogs.

To answer your careers question...

For primary career, your heir's career, (section C), you roll between 1 and 20. If you get between 1 and 9, you proceed to chart/section C1 and then roll between 1 and 14. If you rolled on section C and got between 10 and 13, you'd instead proceed to chart C2, and roll between 1 and 14. Chart C1 you'll notice is standard careers like business and culinary, while C2 is mostly skill-based work like artists and fishersims. It goes on like that. There's a chart C3 for special expansion pack careers like ghost hunter (ambitions) and magician (showtime).

Now, section D is for your heir's spouse. It's not the same as rolling for section C; you'll notice it's weighted differently. It's more likely to roll a non-standard career for the spouse than for the heir, for example. But when you roll for section D, you'll possibly have to refer upwards again to charts C1 and C2 (and C3). We could have made a chart D1 and D2 and D3, but it would be the same careers so we didn't waste the space.

You just have to get used to the idea that when you roll for careers, you'll likely be doing a series of rolls to determine specifically what career your sim takes.

For job hopper (your actual question, yeah, sorry), you'll just make a list. Roll for careers again, and write down what you get. If you get job hopper again, just re-roll until you get something different. Say, you got ghost hunter. Cool. Write that down. Now roll nine more times, writing each one down. Your sim has to then play those careers in order, changing jobs once they hit level 5 of a standard or special career, or have gone on with their job for an entire sim week (7 sim days) if it's a non-standard career like artist, fishersim, collector or farmer.

This means your sim may die or choose to retire before going through all 10 of these careers. If you somehow get through all ten of them... uh, you could probably decide for yourself what you want to do. Maybe you could cycle through them again, or you could stick with the last job rolled.

You can only roll "none" as a career for job hopper if it's your secondary income. "None" is a career roll for them. They're a housewife/househusband/whatever-fits. So I guess that would be a week of your sim looking for work or going through a midlife crisis or whatever in the story, lol.

If you don't travel, it's not considered cheating to buy things in buydebug that you would have bought while traveling. I bought my legacy family some sim-fu training equipment.

It's also not considered cheating to buy things in buydebug for community lots.

Okay, that's good. I know it's not that bad, but I hate celebrities and have a mod that gets rid of them, so I'd have to reverse it to even complete the goal. Is this true of all gen goals? Like is idle career also heir only (or the other gen goals)?

Also, I used the application for rolls and noticed that I don't always get a secondary job for the spouse. Does that mean that the spouse needs to be unemployed? Or can I just choose one myself?
