Sims 2 - Sim Tracker
Just a sneak peek, the finished product may look somewhat different.

what will be its purpose? will we be able to extract sims or make copies of them with it besides just keeping info on them

For now it will just be for keeping track of everything. later (If I can figure out how) I'll add more functions, like the one you mentioned.
I've seen a few other tools similar, but none were ever updated for all EP's, so I am making my own.

When my sims 2 folder got to be 3 inches thick, I decided there had to be a better way. I found Sims2DB, but it is not updated past OFB. I made a spread sheet, but even it was too cumbersome, so, I might as well put my programming skills to use, and do this.

That program (SimsDB) is nice, but as you noted, it's not updated past OFB, and there aren't many if any replacements for keeping tabs on your game. Instead a player has to substitute all kinds of charts and notebooks for keeping all the information together.
The only closest one I can find is one by Rufio at MATY called "SimSheet" but it does require that you export information from SimPE-the latest version, too. It's not as handy when you want to look up something quickly.

Could you please post a bigger picture of what is already there? When I open your screenshot, I can't quite see the letters :(
Well, this is how I make bios for my sims, with all necessary fields plus SimPe screenshots for their personality and skills:
http://img38.imageshack.us/img38/5138/bioyl.jpg
Previous addresses is a field for sims who relocated, changed their address, etc.
Major is a field for a major, and I usually write the name of the uni after it (in the parantheses)
Body shape is fit or fat, - is normal
All the rest is self-explanatory :)
I don't know what others need, but I don't need anything else, I guess :)

From what I can glean from your screen, it's pretty much all that I would need-but with a couple of other ideas:
1. Turn ons and turn offs list (unless it's already in the 'traits' list)
2. Major attractions to people list? For instance-if the sim has a 3 bolt attraction for someone. Player input, of course.
The previous poster's output screen is pretty much what I'd need in the program, especially with personality.
If it could be done, perhaps inter-linking between sims would be nice. For instance, if you pull up a bio of Sim A, and then get a cross-link to who they're attracted to, and that bio.
But of course it's depending on what you can program in. Hope this helps you a bit. I'm looking forward to seeing your program, that's for sure!

Yes, at least for defaults. That info's knocking about on the web somewhere. I could probably even dig it out of my own files if need arose.

ME TOO!
I'm pretty sure the genetic codes are knocking around somewhere in the middle of a MATY thread. I know I copy-pasted skin/eyes/hair into a Word document from there for reference.
ETA: Found it!! :D Reply # 18 on the thread "Correcting the DNA of Strangetown premade characters". It lists all of the default/Maxis genetics. If you've got CC replacement defaults, they may change (I know I had to fiddle around and figure out the codes for my default skins from HystericalParoxysm's Idolatry of Flesh series)

This is an impossible request, unless the person rewrites the Sims 2 from scratch.
However, you can easily connect Pleasantview, Strangetown, and Veronaville with a shared Downtown or Shopping District. Just create your own Megahood.
Tarlia has a wonderful set of base game neighborhoods which have been modified to be Shopping Districts using my subhood technique:
http://meetme2theriver.livejournal.com/63030.html#cutid1
This will allow you to quickly and easily create such a Megahood, as Darby and maxon explained to you in the other thread:

(I am looking into learning how the game files work, and how to access them. If anyone can help me with that, I could sure use the info)The information that we have is scattered around a bit, but I'd suggest starting with the wiki:
http://simswiki.info/wiki.php?title=Category:InternalFormats
Be aware that some of the information is incomplete or invalid. In spite of that, I often find that it's enough to get me moving. If you find inaccuracies, be sure to fix them in the wiki for the next person.
I also find that the SimPE source code can be helpful:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/simpe/develop
Since we can use SimPE to edit the files, you can be reasonably sure that what's there is accurate (although I know of several SimPE bugs).
My other source of information was the source code for the programs that I've taken over from other people. If any of the other Sim Info programs have source code, be sure to take a look. For example, SimSheet has source code. There may be other programs available which will help.
http://www.moreawesomethanyou.com/smf/index.php/topic,12737.0.html
I have done some small amount of programming involving families and sims, so feel free to ask if you have a question. I'll monitor this thread to see if I can be of any help.

So it's not just a tracker, there are other helpful functions? How exactly does it keep track of the household juice supply and planted plants, does it read game files on-the-fly (so you could simultaneously play and check the program to see the result)? Or do you need to enter the data manually?

As mentioned before, you will have to enter the data by hand. If you, like me, have a desk top and a lap top, then you will be able to do both at once. Eventually I plan to make mobile version as well.
I plan to look into adding a feature to read the game files directly (also you could use it at the same time, if you play in window mode)

I don't know about reading it at the same time, but as I (a non-programmer) understand it, SimPE has an option to export its data as some sort of Excel file which can then be read by the database program. I believe Sims2DB used a similar method to grab up-to-date information from SimPE when opened, as long as the program had the path to where the information was stored.

However, the game probably keeps a lot of the information in memory (or virtual memory), which may mean that you are not going to see changes made during the play session until you exit the game.

Yes, it did. The original file was a .csv file - a sort of spreadsheet file. I think you got it through the save description option in SimPE though the last version of SimPE doesn't seem to support the function (at least my version crashes). You can also extract some data by extracting the neighbourhood under Tools>Export (I think). The original Sims 2dB had a nifty import for the .csv file which would update a lot of the information stored about your sims - so if a couple had got married since the last time you updated, their relationship status was changed in Sims 2dB. The original creator of Sims 2dB was still posting here a couple of months ago.

Members (Shows Household members)
Gardening (Lets you keep track of when produce should be ready to harvest, and how many juices you can make based on your supplies)

On the college page are the careers listed for the majors just Maxis or are custom careers mixed in as well? I know for some of my custom careers when selecting a major they will appear but not all of them. I don't know whether it's because there's no room or no major was associated with the career when making it.

The program will come with default careers and majors, however, you will be able to edit all of the lists to add any you wish. Any where you can add custom content to the game, I have set up my program to be able to let you add it in as well.
Some of the features I want to add my not be done until after I publish the core program.

How 'bout you release a pre-release? A very basic version that just allows you to enter in information? I kinda would like that...
I have an idea...
A journal that allows you to enter in things that happen so that you can keep a log...maybe for testing CC...
Notes would be general notes, and the journal would be specific events and testing data...
How about it? A Journal would make an excellent feature!

I am very close to releasing version 1.0.
I do have places to keep various notes about the Sims and the Households. A full on journal should not be to much of a problem to add (a bit later).

Got the beta well and good, installed without a problem. Testing it on Windows 7.
Just testing the "options" section now, to add custom careers and majors. Darn you, I have to leave for work in half an hour and now I want to do nothing but test this all night!
ETA:
Noticed a couple of small typos. The vacation hoods are listed as part of "Bon Boyage" and in the Pets tab for the household section, it is written "parret" instead of "parrot".
Also got a couple of "Unhandled exception" errors - one with "Add New Major" -> Save, the other with "Add New Sim" -> Cancel. I'll test a little more when I get home tonight.

Interesting project, indeed!
I am assuming that the purpose of this database program is to keep track of all the Sims in your game by neighborhood manually, right? So, instead of having to open up SimPE all time (which seems to be too technical), users can open up this database program that can store important Sim-related information, written in plain English.
Is it going to be available in other languages or only English?
It will be English at first (as that's all I know) but I am willing to work with others to translate it.

If you're running Win7, I don't know-I had an different problem: I'm running this on XP, and I had to update the NET Framework to 4.0 to run the program.
In the end, it wasn't really a problem, because NET Framework is available for XP users and it updates nicely.

For the most part, the Sim Tracker is finished ... I still need to finish up the help files, and some of the reports I want it to generate. The question is ... shall I publish it now, or keep working on it until everything is done. Obviously, I can always publish updates as I get them done.
So, what do you think?
Peni Griffin

Never publish drafts. Get it into finished shape and you won't be interrupted by complaints trickling in from people who didn't bother to go back and get the update.

Never publish drafts. Get it into finished shape and you won't be interrupted by complaints trickling in from people who didn't bother to go back and get the update. If I followed that advice, one of two things would have happened:
1) I never would have released anything, since none of my programs are ever "complete". I always have thoughts on how to improve them.
2) I never would have improved my released programs, since they would have been "complete" (no matter how many new thoughts I have). No shrinking feature in the LotAdjuster. No extra features in HoodReplace. No no-slope basements in the GridAdjuster.
Peni Griffin
1st Dec 2011, 09:45 PM
Those aren't drafts, they're editions.
She sounded like she still had a couple of minor basic functions - report making and a help file - but felt that those were fiddly bits and was getting impatient to upload it.
But if you upload with the fiddly bits undone, that you know need doing, the incentive for the final polish is gone. Get something polished out there; and then revise again when a substantial change needs making - a new idea for functionality, or a problem fixed, or something.
But then, I'm not a programmer. My opinion's only worth what it's worth; and of course it's based on publishing stories, not programs.
RebaLynnTS

I mean, if Sim A is friends with Sim B, shouldn't they be cross-linked so the info doesn't have to be repeated?
Thanks for considering this idea!

5 Gold Rings
Beta Testers - In order for some changes to show up you need to goto
C:\Users\Rebecca\Documents\RLMsoft\W7-SimTracker\<User Name>\Files
and delete "nameScholarships.bin" and "numScholarships.bin", they will automatically be replaced with the corrected versions.
If you have added new custom scholarships to the lists, make sure you re-add them before selecting any sims.
You will also need to delete "AC1_AdultCareer.bin" to "AC25_AdultCareer.bin" for those to be updated properly.
You can of course, wait until the final release, then delete all files, and start over.

One of my earlier sims efforts:
On the Twelfth Day of Christmas, EAxis gave to me:
Twelve Drowning Swimmers
Eleven Runners with Scissors
Ten Hit by satellite
Nine Roaring Fires
Eight Electric Shocks
Seven Poisoned dinners
Six Empty Fridges
Five! Cow-ow plants
Four Deaths by flies
Three Hacking Coughs
Two-oo Scared to Death
And a resurrected sim zom-bie
So festive. Now, Rebalynn, I'm a bit puzzled. I've had a number of files appear on the C Drive (not in a sub-folder). Is that right? They have names like HH0_HouseData.bin, firstNames.bin and so on. There's also a folder called Sim0 as well as the expected RLMSoft folder. I'm wondering if I've done something wrong.

One thing I can promise .. There is an extensive help section :)
Basically, if you keep track of information about your Sims in notebooks, on notecards, or in any other format. You can throw them all out, and replace the with this handy program (transfer the data first though).
Also, if you use DropBox, I am going to add support for it, so your information will be available on any computer you have your DropBox on (And the Sim Tracker Installed).
I'm also thinking of adding thumbdrive support later.
PS: Feel free to ask me any questions.

As a beta tester, I've not commented on anything about the program specifically because it's still in development, and to give away too many details now would be rather premature:
But I can say that this is far better than the Sims2 DB was-it is much easier to use and more streamlined, with almost every aspect of the game covered from top to bottom. Once you put in data, it's almost automated.
Of course once it's released to the general public, I'm sure that a lot of people will be commenting on it.
It has been a pleasure working with it and making a small contribution to its' development.
I must thank you, Reba, for your incredible amount of patience with us beta testers and our whims, or at least mine!

I'm totally that kind of player. Or rather, I would be, if I had the energy to actually act on my perfectionistic tendencies. I've got notes and printouts like crazy, but it's an unorganized disaster. So yeah, something like this appeals greatly!
