View Full Version : TSRW - Duplicate groups and textures help!

Hi! Huge problem! I'm creating a non recolorable sculpture in TSRW and is currently cloning the "school-bell" Which has one mesh group. When I import my mesh, which has 5 groups, i duplicate the original group. After that I try to change the diffuse texture in each group, but it keeps changing in all groups. Even if i remove the diffuse map and add a new one in the materals editor. How do I solve this problem?

TSRW does not alter mesh groups. You have to use a mesh editor like Milkshape or Blender to create, map and combine your mesh parts/groups, then import the finished mesh into TSRW. (At least I think that is what you are trying to do.) All TSRW does is package the mesh and texture files.
When you make a new mesh, UV map each part as you create your new item, them combine them into the correct groupings. The new mesh replaces the cloned mesh. You have to give it the same groups names as your cloned item and you can't have any extra groups or your mesh will fail. Please look at the tutorials for mesh basics, it will show you what steps you need to take.
Take a look at the wiki for some excellent tutorials. http://simswiki.info/wiki.php?title=Tutorials:TS3_Basic_Object_Creation

Well what happens when TSRW duplicates a group, it duplicates it as a faithful twin. This means both old and new group are pointing to (referencing) the one material, which is a seperate entity to the mesh groups and does not get duplicated. It is that material definition you are editing when you change the diffuse, so it will change for both naturally. There is a way of giving each group it own material, which I can't quite remember.... I'll be back if it comes back to me. Somewhere there is an option called "unlink" I think.

Hi! Sorry if i didn't make myself clear. I've already divided my mesh into 5 groups, and uv-mapped all of them. My problem is that when I import my mesh into TSRW I have to duplicate the group of the object which i clone to be able to import, since there is no 5 group non recolorable scuplture i can clone directly. These new duplicated groups all share the same diffuse map. So whem I'm trying to change the diffuse in one of the groups in TSRW, all of the diffuses in all of the groups changes. How do I make a diffuse map unique to a specific duplicated group? I read somewhere that you can remove the diffuse map in the material editor and just add a new, but when I do this, it's just the same as before. What is a good object for me to clone? And how do i make the textures for my groups unique after I imported my mesh? Can you somehow remove the links between the groups so that they don't share the same texture?

I thought you did make yourself clear. Anyway I have reminded myself how to make a new material definition
On the mesh tab, you have the groups listed, and there is the new group you made.
Under it thereis the line that says "Default material <silly number>"
using the ... at the end of the line, get the popup for editing the material.
Change the Name entry, then you get a prompt asking you if you want to unlink from other groups sharing the material. Say yes to this.
Ok now you get a duplicate material definition. When you start editing this material, you can choose some other image to be your diffuse map. Normally an object only has two Texture Compositors, a diffusemap and a specularmap. I am not sure the game can handle more than one CASTable group, so it wouldn't make sense to define a unique one for this new material to use as its diffuse map. But what you CAN do is point it at a DDS image, which will be an overlay for that group only. Your new group will be a non-CASTable area with its own unique overlay.

I'll try this later when I get home. What I am trying to do is making large deco-buildings to place as a sculpture above 2-story structures. The only thing i need now is to figure out how to make my mesh-group with windows to light up at night.

Update! It didn't work. I tried to rename my goups as 0x11111111 and so on, but the textures keeps updating in all groups

I think you missed some steps in my previous post. You're not meant to be renaming your groups :)
