I have these little things called Forget-Me-Nows. Pop one of these and it'll knock you right out.

Take two benadryl it's the equivelent of a sleeping pill.

Find warm milk don't work, just ends up causing me to wake up later to go pee.

Chamomile. :3

I drink two cups of chamomile tea with honey about 30-45 minutes before I try to sleep. If you think you'll need to "go" in the middle of the night, try just one cup. I don't usually have to get up in the middle of the night for it though but everyone is different I guess. It's the only thing that actually helps me sleep but it took about a week before it started helping.
If you don't like tea, try meditation. It takes some getting used to but I usually meditate about an hour before sleep and it helps me sleep too. If you don't like that, lay down and read a book for a while and/or listen to classical or "nature" music.

I have chronic insomnia and sometimes end up going 20+ hours without sleep. I've tried warm milk, sleeping pills (prescription and non-prescription), and pretty much everything else that's always suggested and none of them work. Chamomile is the only thing that's ever helped.

Have you tried laying down with a pillow and blanket?

Sounds like these usually put me into sleep. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k0gsduLrfSU) Just some simple rain&thunder sounds, you can convert or download and put them on your mp3-player :)

I sometimes have such trouble sleeping (usually stress) that my doctor made me read up on "sleep hygiene". That's what they call it now apparently. It involves preparing yourself to sleep by stopping what you are doing and doing wind down stuff instead (taking a bath, drinking a warm drink, relaxing in a light-dimmed room and so on). You're supposed to make a ritual of it and do it, as far as possible at the same time each night. I think the idea is to train your body to start slowing down. It does work if I behave myself and stick to the rules but I'm not good at it. I remember when she first suggested it though: I was quite keen on the idea and said, perhaps I could stop working early - say 10pm. She rolled her eyes. She was thinking around 6pm. A good bed is important too.

You should try to do something physical during the day if you have time. If you're not that big on full on exercise then go for a long walk or something similar. Sometimes when I spent days not doing anything during a school break I'd start to find it hard to fall asleep. It might help a little.

Strong physical exercise outside, followed by a warm shower should do the trick. The exercise will tire you, the fresh air will oxigenate your blood and your brain, and will also help to relax you and take your mind off things. The warm shower will mellow you down. Shovelling snow off your sidewalk is good enough seasonal excercise.

I've dealt with nightly insomnia:

1. No caffeine. Seriously, not even in the daytime.
2. No internet after 9 PM.
3. Try midnite tabs with melatonin. Resist using more melatonin than you need, as that can be counterpructive.
4. Exercise 1 hour in the daytime.

I count every breath until my breathing becomes shallow and I drift off. It often works. I have very bad insomnia, and it's the only thing I've found that helps. Also, avoid TV and computers late at night - read a book. The light from the screens does not help.

Also, set a bright, white light on a timer for 7am or so, right by your bed. That did help me initially, except that it's horrible when it goes off after you've only been sleeping a few hours.

Taking a nice warm bath and turning off all the lights really helps. Having some nice white noise is also a good idea. Maybe leave your computer on, if it's in your bedroom, with rainymood if you like rain? Always works for me!

I find it hard to go to sleep sometimes, I usually end up getting comfy, closing my eyes and meditating/clearing the mind. If that doesn't work I'll do the opposite and think up a simple story, which helps me to drift off to sleep. Or I'll read a book until I feel tired.

Reading usually helps me fall asleep. Relaxing music may also help.

Find a really dense, boring book (something technical should do the trick), and lie down on your side and try to read it. I'm not sure if I've ever actually attempted this on purpose, but it works accidentally all the time.

I am an insomniac. The only thing that helps me is to relax the whole body:
Start at your toes and flex them and then relax them, go up from your calves and do that to your whole body.
The only other alternative is to bath in arnica oil. But beware, you will feel like a limp noodle afterwards

I'm supposed to use a pill. Even though to me taking pills are just plain annoying. I would want to watch TV till I fall asleep, I could write till I fall asleep, play on computer till I fall asleep...that sort of thing. :|

When I was younger my mom and her friend, Stacey, gave me and Stacey's daughter sleeping pills. And I almost passed out in the bathtub, when I was taking my bath before bed. >.> It wasn't good.

Alright back on subject.

Take a nice long relaxing warm bath before going to bed. If you must light some candles around the tub. YES, both women and men do it, don't be hatin. But yeah, just take a calming bath, it works for me :D

Yeah - I never think taking pills is a good idea if you can avoid it. I've had to take far too many during my life.

I agree with the calming sounds idea, that always seems to work. Another thing you could do is read something that you don't really find interesting. Might get sleepy then!

I typically do something that makes me sleepy (watching TV in a comfy position, staying on the PC too long with no break, listen to music in the dark and zone out).

I think I am likely in the minority here but reading/anything to do with words does not make me sleepy. If anything I am more likely to stay up all night if I am reading something or doing any sort of word puzzle. Listening to white noise/fans/nature sounds doesn't help me either. However listening to and focusing all my attention on my favorite songs seems to lull me to sleep most nights.
