View Full Version : Toddlers escaping from cribs

I was playing my legacy household yesterday. One of my toddlers kept screaming for someone to let her out of her crib, while the others had already stopped crying. Eventually, she just climbed out of her crib.
I was just wondering what will cause toddlers to do this. I've never seen this before in my game, and, honestly, I think it's adorable. Does it have to do with their personality, aspiration level, mood..?

I'm usually not staring down toddlers but at least to me it seems random.

Maybe there's a better chance if they're more active/outgoing? Or they know how to walk.

Well first off, for a sim toddler to be able to climb out of the crib they must know how to walk. They must also be very bored as well. I've never had it happen in my game and I've been playing off and on since early 2005. My Sim tots are rarely so bored. Usually Mommy, Daddy, or another family member lets the tot out as soon as the tot is awake.

It has only happened once so far and just a few days ago. Everybody in the house was busy and the toddler after waking up was throwing the usual tantrum and just let himself out! The said toddler was 10 active and 1 nice point.

I don't use any sleeping or toddler related mods, so it wasn't mod related. Since I play without freewill, the toddler just stayed put outside his crib picking his nose. I don't know what caused it, as I have had active toddlers before too. Maybe it was the combination of active points with the lack of nice points? Whatever, it was really cute to watch.

She knows how to walk, and she has 8 active and 10 nice points. Maybe it's the active points that made her do that?

Hey, enough cruelty to toddlers! Download a toddler bed, and she will never scream again. She will just get up quietly, without waking other sleepers, and settle down to play. My game has been so much more peaceful since I acquired toddler beds. I could never stand the screaming.

I think theres a hack that lets them get out of the crib themselves. I dont have toddler beds and I use this hack because sometimes my simmies are making breakfast or still showering getting ready to attend to the baby asap.

There is a hack, on Simlogical. I use it too.

I know Atavera retired, but his/her toddler blanket works wonders:

when I had a computer that could play The Sims 2, I always used the toddler blankets so the toddlers could get on and off by themselves and didn't need to scream to get moms/dads attention to let them out.

I've only had it happen with unhappy toddlers. I've never checked their active points.

Nothing to do with active points. I tested it in my game a while ago. If the toddler has learnt to walk and their fun motive is in the red there is a chance they will climb out of the crib. The toddler in question only had about 3 activeness.

This only happens for me if one or several of the toddler´s needs are low. Then they will stand and scream until they manage to let themselves out. Since I mostly learn them how to walk the first day I don´t know if that´s a must for them to be able to escape. If all the toddler´s needs are good however, they will just stand there and scream for a while and then give up.

The last time this discussion came up (either here or over on Livejournal) I did a test. The only requirement back then was that the toddler knew how to walk; active points seemed to have no effect at all. Motives may have had an effect, because I kept their motives up high during the testing and it took them about an hour to get out of the crib.

It happens to me with any toddler who you leave in the crib long enough who knows how to walk. Not sure how motives play in: I've had toddlers wet themselves before letting themselves out, but the amount of time spent in the crib varies (some drain energy about 1/4, some get energy into the yellowish area before letting themselves out.) Basically, they wake up, howl, plop back down into the crib for an undefined amount of time, and then eventually let themselves out. I usually manage to have a parent come and get them before that happens, so it's not a very frequent occurrence despite the number of toddlers I have in my 'hood.

Atavera's toddler blanket is very useful if you have multiples and want them to be able to put themselves to sleep; they don't wake the other toddlers when they wake up (unlike with a crib, where they start howling), so if you want trips or quads sleeping in the same room it's definitely a wonderful hack.

I've only seen it once in my 2 1/2 years of playing and I was like, "Did the toddler just get out by himself?"

I still don't know what triggers it, maybe it's random?

Here's a couple of variations on the toddler blanket by Hugelunatic based on the Freetime quilted wall hanging:
Takes its textures from the wall hanging (http://sims2artists.com/index.php?topic=1105.0)
Slaved to the crib bedding (http://sims2artists.com/index.php?topic=1109.0)

I have that blanket myself, along with a babies/toddlers sleep all night hack from Simlogical. My toddlers sleep until morning, and have a late morning/early afternoon nap on the blanket.

When I was making my crib and changing table I know I looked at the code and it looked like (if they could walk) having a low fun or social motive would trigger the escape. BHAVs are still really confusing to me though so I might be wrong about that but if anyone wanted to test it that would be a good place to start.

You'd better not teach them walking,I guess

about the blankets, HL said that the Freetime coloured one is a clone of the wall hanging, does that mean it will get replaced by the bed blanket? i.e. no more wall hanged blanket? or does it look the same only?

That sounds fantastic. O: I'll have to download some toddler beds soon. :anime:

No, it means if you download a recolor for the wall one it'll show up for both.

It happens all the time! If your not watching the toddlers, and then you see them out and about you probably assumed that another Sim took them out.
