View Full Version : Can't save my launcher/downloads to my D drive

Hey guys. I'll keep browsing the forums to see if this issue was previously addressed, but for now I'm tearing my hair out.

My issue is that after re-installing the Sims 3 base game, my S3 launcher is not allowing me to choose where my launcher (and therefore the downloads and mods folder) will be saved. It instantly saves to the Documents folder on the C drive, no matter what I do.

Is it possible to save the launcher elsewhere? Obviously simply moving the folder over the 3 drive corrupts things and prevents me from being able to launch game effectively (disk authorization failures occur). I also used regedit to modify the file paths of all Sims 3 and EA related files to be directed to my D:\ drive, and that didn't seem to work.

A little bit of background: I have an ASUS that comes with a C drive that is quite small (around 70 GBs), but that also has a nice big data drive (200 GBs). When I had the game, the EPs, and all my mods and downloads installed on the C:\ drive there was a whopping 500MB left on my C:\ (which is obviously no good). So I uninstalled everything, and am now starting the process of reinstalling everything on my D:\ drive. The game and EPs install/work just fine on the D:\ drive but if all my downloads save to the C:\ drive I am going to run into space issues again.

Can any kind soul help me or offer me any advice? :faceslap:

On Windows 7 you could move the hole c:\users\xxx\documents folder to another drive:

Just open up the properties of your documents folder, open the "path" tab and choose move. This is the easiest way, but moves all the content in there.

Another easy way that you can try is through the command prompt.
Just use command (it creates a symbolic link):

MKLINK /D "c:\Users\xxx\documents\electronic arts" "d:\xxx"

Sims 3 - Installing / Patching / Uninstalling
Whether you are Installing for the first time or Reinstalling, be sure to read the Game Help:Install FAQ.
-
This Game_Help:TS3_Uninstall link has the step-by-step instructions to guide you through uninstalling The Sims 3,
and its (EP/SP) packs. As well as removing any leftovers after uninstalling.
-
The Game_Help:TS3_Patching Guide provides information on:
Tips Before You Begin
Patching Common Errors
Manual Patch Downloads
Invalid File Errors and more

It appears that there's already a mess, and doing the above moving about of Documents won't help at all if Registry is messed up. The only cure is a full uninstall and reinstall to your D drive. Use CCleaner to clean and repair that Registry first before you reinstall.

Then, use junctions to move your "The Sims 3" user folders to a custom-made path you specified.

To have Launcher automatically reroute to the Downloads folder of Sims 3 user folder in D drive, you may also need to clean up the setting in your browser; either under General Tab for the Downloads settings or the Applications Tab for the "Open With" settings. Set it back to "Always Ask". That is, if you use Firefox. But I believe all browsers have similar settings, just the option or tab names may differ.
After you've corrected the paths and have run it successfully once, you can get the browser to remember the selection and stop asking again, if you prefer.
