If I gave a dorm a complete makover with more expensive furniture and stuff, would the price of moving in go up? I know that the house prices go up with better decoration, but is it the same for dorms?

I don't want to go in and revamp it to find no one can actually move in coz it's to expensive for students.

Dorms are free. It doesn't matter what you have in them.

You do get bills though, which are calculated by what stuff you have. My uni dorm had a big makeover and the next day a bill for more than $2000 arrived. Happily one of the sims had a genie lamp and could wish for more cash.

i once decorated a dorm with expensive stuff! my sim wanted to move out when she saw the bill. She got charged thousands for an expensive bed, an expensive desk, an expensive computer and an expensive TV!

What do college students need with expensive stuff? Have you every seen an expensive dorm in real life? I save as much of their money as possible for setting them up after graduation.

Fortune sims need it. ^^ Also, I made my teens put their own nice home furniture in their inventories before going to college, because who doesn't take some of their own stuff with them? Additionally, one of my students is an adult and hell yeah he wants his nice, expensive double bed for woohooing those 20 sims!

What on earth do you put in a dorm to make it generate four figures worth of bills? My students renting the old stately homes I put on Crumplebottom Lane, who put their grand money into hot tubs, instruments, fishing holes, greenhouses, sculptures, and yes comfy double beds only get bills in the low hundreds.

I have specific dorms for different types f people sometimes. For example the Landgraabs will always go into the nice dorms or students who have lots of scholarships but those who barely made it to uni will stay in a smaller 'crappier' dorm thats not so nicely decorated nor does it have lots of the skilling items. All for storyline purposes of course ^_^

In order to offset any bills, if you have Mansion and Garden Stuff, put in green energy sources.

I don't know how it's calculated, but there are eight playables and I spent about 23 grand personalising each of their rooms. Maybe it's charging me for all the fixtures and fittings already in place, I dunno. But after genie lamp cash, paintings selling at around $50 each and end of year bonuses, they now have 26 grand, so they can afford it.

$23K to furnish dorm rooms? It must look like Buckingham Palace! Obviously my sims and I have much, much cheaper taste than you do. Though there was that time I almost bankrupted the sorority stocking the closet...

When I move my Sims into dorms, I sell the beds for the Uni students that arent mine and buy a bit better of a bed for my students, also I upgrade the sofas and buy them the bigger tv ... other than that they are students, they arent gonna have money to buy extravagent stuff. Maybe in their junior/senior year I will get them a pool table but thats only if they are good. After all they are there to study ... I am a bit strict when it comes to controlling my Sims! LOL

The worst thing is that your sim is not just charged for their own furniture, but for the furniture in all of the unused dorm rooms.

23 grand is less than 3000 each sim. Each with a nice bed and computer and desk. Plus I don't intend to play these guys once they graduate, so I have no incentive to save. ^^

I gotta say, going up to four figures, you might as well rent a house. I put a lot of expensive stuff in a house, and I think the most my Sim ever had to pay was...$670. And as dorms are free. Revamping them can be almost expensive as paying a mortgage on a house. Plus...I dunno, dorms just bother the hell out of me. No space, have random people coming in and out of your Sim's dorm room. I know there is a private sign, and all that jazz. Then you have random dormies bothering the hell out of you.

I tend to have my Sims in a nice, peaceful environment :)

99% of my sims live in dorms for the entire four years of college. I guess I must have a hack or glitch or something because my students haven't had any bills for ages!

I generally make my own dorms but I don't tend to use expensive stuff; I use all IKEA stuff.

This is why you don't have any bills - it's likely you either started the dorm as a community lot or deleted the mailbox. Sometimes, this can cause the repo man to turn up because the bills keep getting sent but never arrive.

Nah, that's the best part! I love the chaos of dorms, with the mascots and cheerleaders running in and out and random dormie's getting into relationships and then dying and the dorm chef setting things on fire all the time! IMO, they've plenty of time for a boring, private, peaceful residence when they graduate.

GO GERBITS!

Well... I do it this way.

I always like to move my Sims in Small Dorm with 5 Rooms (the first one from Dorm Bin). Then, I type in "motherlode", people, and build a castle outta their rooms, and replace that crappy couch with normal cozy one, buy them a flat screen TV and maybe redecorate the kitchen. Then, I type in "familyFunds EffYea 9000" and continue the gameplay.

Like a boss.

I already have that problem. Cheerleaders and Mascots running in, cheering. And then fighting. And plus, college students area always on the lot. So, its not as peaceful, but better than some random dormie walking up to you, when they are pissed off, and just start poking your Sim, then brawling it out. Then the rest of the time, my Sim is stomping around, pissed off because some dormie didn't like that my Sim picked a major and didn't want to hear him/her whine about what they want -.-"

I have done the Dorm thing, it was fun. But then got dull >.>

The cheerleaders and mascots don't bug me too much, surprisingly. I let them do whatever they want, I really dont notice them ever unless the cow mascot is trying to start something with my specific sim then I just ask them to leave.

I build my own dorms so I built it in a way that I lock the door to the bedrooms so when I have a party or people over they don't disappear into them :)

That sounds boring as heck to some of us, DJ, but if it's fun for you that's all that matters.

All of my dorms are more or less glitchy these days, and having a cook on site interferes with my sims getting cooking points; plus the storytelling element is important to me, so I have some continuous households that I never let empty out. They all started in dorms except the new one, which started with seven sims with scholarship money, and then moved to residences, and in one case upgraded residences, once the grant money has accumulated. There usually is a bunch of grant money lying around, because I run out of things to buy. They don't need a bunch of crap and though they generally accumulate skilling objects, not having them on the lot encourages them to go to community lots on campus. Which is one way to keep the University years from dragging on the player, BTW.

I keep thinking I should upgrade Romantic Resources from that little two-bedroom on Peanut Street, but it's so full of history now I can't bear to. There's photo booth photos of previous tenants all over the walls, and leftovers in the fridge from way back when Clovis Point, Maddy Moiselle, and Dom Estic all moved in.

I prefer to play large households, so for college I tend to wait until there are enough teens to send off that there's no room for other dormies, and just move them all in together. I like to keep a close eye on them and get through it fast.

I build dorms as residential lots and then use "changelotzoning apartmentbase dorm" to make them dorms, and I never delete mailboxes. Come to think of it, even on the dorms that I haven't built myself I still don't get bills!

If you are changing your dorms to apartment buildings without any proper apartment doors, it's no wonder that you're getting no bills. When you do odd things, you can expect the game to behave oddly.

Sorry, that was a typo. I didn't mean to say apartmentbase, I meant I was changing them to dorms.

I seem to remember there was a bug early on with bills in dorms - fixed in a patch? Maybe. Did you patch Uni?

I have my game patched, but I dont get bills once the first student graduates and leave. The post person comes to the lot, stand in front of the mailbox, post person move on and leave lot. No bills delivered.
This will probably not happen if you have the dorm continuosly occupied, but I dont.

Hey guys I normally build fairly cheap dorms for my sims but this last time I decided to splurge a bit since I had five kids going to Uni together. They had double beds, a card table, floor model tv, the microphone and a computer/libray/art lab and violin. The bills weren't super high but they were about a $1000 the first year so keeping them paid proved a fun little challenge especially since they were all family, romance or popularity sims. :)

Do you have that buyable mailbox in your game? I remember I had that in my game and it would bug out my dorm's mailbox like that and it really got on my nerves and I finally took it out and just built another dorm.

No, no buyable box. I even had this issue before I began my downloads spree a couple of years ago (but still had every patch).
I dont bother much about it in my game, just commented because Maxon asked el_flel if the game was patched.
