Help! I've read everything but still no sims in CAS bin!?

Hi, I've read all the help and all the guides to installation and downloads and followed the guides and they haven't helped :( I've tried and succesfully downloaded and extracted the .sim packages and what not, I've checked they're in the correct place with the correct filename too. I'm sick of having all this custom content at my fingers but being unable to use it. Please someone I don't know what to do. When I put a CAS in the sim bin it works and saves and shows up and it is in the folder. When I put custom extracted files in the same place they just don't show up in the sim bin! Am I missing something? What have I done wrong?
P.s the person who answers this and solves the problem gets infinite awesomeness and an unlimited supply of hypothetical bacon.

What is the filetype of the file you are trying to install? Is it a Sims3Pack or a .package?

I managed to fix it somehow by uninstalling and reinstalling the sims :) thanks though.
