I extracted the files to the game, but for some reason I can't find any of the starter homes in my lot bin. Plus, a pop-up doesn't appear on the screen asking if I'd like to enable the mods. What did I do wrong? :(

I looked at the tutorial and it only covers things about custom content, like hair and furniture. I skipped the required expansion packs, because they only need the base game. I also skipped meshes, because that's for clothes and hair.. which show up just fine.

Lots are different from other types of sims 2 CC. They need to be installed, not just placed in the downloads folder. This part of the faq is what you're looking for: http://simswiki.info/wiki.php?title=Game_Help:Downloading_for_Fracking_Idiots_7

Oh, I did install them.. I think. The little blue pop-up appeared on my screen telling me so. The only one I had trouble with was mods, because it kept telling me to select a program to open it with..

You should use Clean Installer to install lots. Select just the lot file and check that it says Teleport folder as the destination and that the file extension is Sims2Tmp. The game takes it from the Teleport folder and places it ready for you to use in the house bin.

You will need Rar, 7zip or some other unzipping program for the mods. Read up and make sure you know exactly what the mods do and if it's suitable for your EP's. Download it to your desktop, right click on the file and choose properties, under there you can change what program opens it.

Umm.. Wow. This seems very complex. I've downloaded several mods before, but that was a while ago. It seemed a lot easier last time..
[Wait. I think the mods actually work, but I'm not sure. ]

I had no idea sims could do that.
