Yeah, we all knew a thread like this was going to come along eventually. So, what's your favorite Expansion Pack, and may I ask why it is your favorite?
My personal favorite would most likely be Superstar. I love how well that EP captured the life of the rich and famous, and I can't forget the awesome music in studio town's build and buy modes.

I love unleashed (love of animals) & Superstar (I just love the whole feel of the game)

Well, when I first got the game, I got the Complete Collection, so I've never really had a chance to experience each EP separately. But I personally love Vacation. I think it's a totally underrated EP (same with BV for TS2). I love taking my sims on vacation, especially in the snowy resort. :)

Makin' Magic, without a doubt. I loved the quirky take on magic in it and the whole feel of Magic Town. Superstar was pretty good too though.

All of them. I can't imagine playing the Sims without my singer which dog-owner sim who spends half her time on vacation and and the other half Downtown! The only one I didn't really use was the party pack because it was the last one I picked up.

Makin' Magic, Unleashed, and Vacation.. in no order.
Even though I never got to play Unleashed. xD
edit: Whoops. I meant to say Unleashed was the only one I got to play. :faceslap: I so close to playing Vacation, but my dad made us take it back because he couldn't figure out how to download it. I also liked Superstar, which I did get to play.

Hot Date was probably my favourite. I recall really loving the downtown neighbourhood and all the new romantic crap. Livin' Large was also exciting and made a very good game even better.
I also had and enjoyed House Party. Unleashed was alright - probably my least favourite of the ones mentioned which is the case with TS2 expansions as well. I never got around to obtaining Vacation, Superstar, or Makin' Magic. I think my dad got tired of buying them for me. ;)

I think Superstar was one of those you either loved or hated. I hated it. It always amazes me when people say they loved it. Still, it's very popular and y'all must have got something out of it I didn't which is my loss. Anyway, I probably got the most out of Unleashed because of the expansion of the neighbourhood, the pets and everything else that came with it (and my Goth Snr obsession, of course). I loved the pets. I also liked MM but only played it a really short time before TS2 was released and so don't feel I got as much out of it. I never played TS1 again and even though I've loved seeing all the pictures and reading all the discussion that's popped up on here since the opening of the board, I still don't want to. I liked all the EPs though. I made a lot more use of Vacation than I do of BV. I had a really nice airport lot (just the terminal building) with a hacked object that allowed your sims to set off for their vacation from there. It even came with a little object mod that produced an aircraft taking off sound. I remember that quite clearly. I modded TS1 to death too.

It's gotta be Livin' Large. 1st EP and think of all the missing content without it! It's the first one to expand beyond the few little houses that were available. It was the template for all EP's. I just think the first is the best!

You've reminded me koololdster that there were no community lots to start with were there? Was it Hot Date that added that idea?

Was it Hot Date that added that idea?
Correct, Hot Date introduced the community lot ability.

Maxon, you are correct. So I would add Hot Date for the community aspect. It's amazing how limited the original Sims was without any EP's!

All of them, from Living Large which was just awesome with all those new objects (so fresh), through all others that added tons of fun to game, to Making Magic that is so great. I loved going on dates, vacations, buying pets, being star, everything. But the greatest fun I guess I had with Vacations and Making Magic. And Hot Date. And... all the others. Man, I just can't pick one or even two.

Easy: Makin' Magic is in the number 1 slot across all games for me (1, 2, and 3). :D
For TS1 alone, it'd be followed by Unleashed, I think. Those + Vacation are, like, the trifecta of what I'd choose if I could only have three Sims 1 games installed, since they pair well (vintage magic circus, spooky classy New Orleans, fun carnival games). But then there's wonderful, wonderful things about the others, too...

16th Jul 2012, 1:28 AM
Makin' Magic for me, too. I love the whole theme idea, and gothy/antique is the way for me. Unleashed is probably a close second, for the classic New Orleans feel to it.

I played with Double Deluxe and the only expansion I ever lusted after was Unleashed. So I've never played without the capacities enabled by Hot Date and Living Large; and I loved the pets and the gardening. But then someone gave me the Complete Collection, and suddenly there were groceries! And community lots sims could go to by themselves!
I never liked Superstar much.Way too hard to keep those stars going - my celebrity sims had to go to Studiotown every day, and the things they had to do got old very quickly for me, plus they lost track of their families and friends in the neighborhood. I never did get anybody all the way to superstar. Reflecting the pressures of the celebrity life, though, the only serious affair I ever played in Sims1 was between two celebrity sims. Minerva was a Strange who married a sim of my making; Fabio was a Townie, ditto. When their families got prosperous I decided I'd work on Superstar with the two of them, and they met each other regularly on Superstar lots and got to be excellent friends. So when I discovered you had the option to rock the trailer, I let them do it. Every time it happened, though, they'd get chance cards about having to pay off a blackmailer, so it was a really expensive affair!

I really enjoyed the gameplay of Hot Date, Superstar, and Makin' Magic the most. Between those three it's hard to say which I like most but if I had to, it would be Hot Date. It introduced leaving home and lots of interactions. I probably played it the most.
I think TS1 expansions were the best! I can't think of any TS2 or TS3 EPs I enjoyed as much as the three I just listed.

The game was not the game until Living Large came along. The Sims was interesting to start with, but it became exciting with Living Large and that's easy to forget. After Living Large, my favorite expansion of all time was Unleashed because I totally love the Louisiana theme from the paneled walls, velour love seat and curtains to the food booths in old town and the jazz player on the community lots. I love Old Town and the families that came with Unleashed, especially the Goths Sr, Claire, and the Hicks. The game play added with gardening was also sorely wanted. And the music - the music! It's my favorite of all time. I listen to a lot of Cajun, Acadian, and Zydeco at home, so this was right up my alley.
After that I liked Makin' Magic the best. But really, I love all the expansions. They all brought much to the game. I remember how fun it was when Hot Date came out and your Sim could finally leave his home! But he couldn't bring the whole family, so I was really thrilled when Vacation came out. When Unleashed was first announced, I thought it would be possible for kids to head down to the neighborhood playground by themselves. I was disappointed that they couldn't. I was also disappointed with how quickly their motives tanked on the community lots. It seems like the perfect place to go and hang out with the neighbors.

I really loved them all, however, I'd say Superstar. That's because when I first got it, I didn't like how slow it was to make money, I'd constantly use the slot machines to try increase funds-rosebud never worked for me, I always got the message "no cheating!". Anyways, I almost gave it away, but I stuck with it. Then once I passed the "busker" stage, and actually got into studio town, I really started to enjoy it. I remember trying to figure out what the directions were for my Sims to take, and the frustration from the directors when I had it wrong! I loved seeing my Sims names get into the paper, and seeing them finally get their star! The one thing I hated, and this was before I started going to any Sims sites, was when my Sims were ready to leave Waylon the bartender would be standing in the street. It took having my Sims needs going way down before it would load my neighbourhood. Once, they got home, they'd usually pass out on their lawn!

Waylon is annoying. He's a bartender with a star over his head and he stands in traffic, causing jams, regularly! I downloaded a fix for him here (http://www.simprograms.com/the-sims/the-sims-1/the-sims-patches/patches-the-sims-superstar/). (You don't have to register, just scroll down the page.)

I had so much fun with Vacation when I was younger. I loved the ambiance of Makin' Magic and Hot Date and Superstar gave us so much more to do.
But overall, Unleashed wins. Unleashed opened the game up and brought it to new levels, with a larger neighbourhood, pets, farming and all that. Plus, I love the New Orleans theme it had going on.

Hot Date was a BOMBSHELL. People who started off with Sims 2 can't imagine it. Original simmers were stuck....in the neighborhood with all of nine houses. NINE HOUSES! But Hot Date added this whole other area that Sims could "visit", which was a completely new concept. And Unleashed bettered it -- not only did it make the neighborhood comparatively huge, but it added gardens, even if the gophers and such were annoying as all get-out.
As much fun as I had with Superstar and Hot Date, I think Unleashed was the best.

I remember those days, being stuck on your home lot permanently. Although I only remember 8 lots? Hot Date was certainly revolutionary...I can leave my lot, yipee!!!
My absolute favourite was Makin' Magic though. I loved that magic town so much I just wanted to hug it like a cute little puppy. Unleashed was probably my second favourite with Vacation a close third.

I loved Makin' Magic, although I never really progressed as far as I would have liked with it. I adored Magic Town itself , and it's the one expansion pack I would really like to have seen updated and added to Sims 2. I'm a little surprised that EA didn't see fit to cash in on the Potter craze by coming up with their own heavily disguised and not at all parasitic version of Hogwarts-style, which is only Scottish Baronial Gothic after all!
I also loved Superstar and all the kitschy sets in Studiotown, even if the whole premise was a bit shallow and show-offy!
I didn't enjoy Unleashed very much. I found that the demands of the pets interfered with my people's storylines too much for my liking and became a nuisance, so almost every lot ended up with the 'No Animals' sign in the end!
And I didn't really get very much fun out of the Vacation one - never enough time to keep the Sims happy and fulfilled and also give them a good time!
Apart from the expansion packs I miss silly little things from the original Sims, like the cheap little side tables. They would look so good in some of my Sims 2 houses!

It's great to see the map. I have a couple printed out myself (forgot what site I got it from but I'm sure I have it bookmarked somewhere). It's easy to Forget that some of the empty lots are numbered and can be built upon, especially some of them way up at the top or in the corner.
As for favorite expansion pack? It's so hard to say, I love them all and got them all when they came out. I remember how excited I was when Livin' Large came out with all those new bright , crazy, tacky objects and wild animal prints. And House Party made it fun to have parties. And I Love Superstar and the Celebrity Town.

Definitely The Sims Makin' Magic, it was the best hands down. i loved they little dragon you could have as a pet that would accidently set fire to everything :P and the skeleton maid and dueling. Hot Date was a BOMBSHELL.
I remember the wonder of a totally new world. (Well, it wasn't a new world in the TS3 sense but it certainly felt that way.) Hot Day and its interactions remained my favourite right to the end. I am still missing it in TS3.

Makin' Magic or Unleashed. Makin' Magic was a lot of fun and I love the spooky yet whimsical magic world and their take of witches in general. However Unleashed expanded the neighborhood a lot and added pets. I'm upset that the sims 2 didn't have magic like it did in the sims 1 the magic in sims 2 is so lame in comparison. Sims 3 supernatural looks cool but i'm not buying the sims 3 for awhile.

Makin' Magic, Unleashed, and Vacation equally.
MM for it's build/buy music, moving portraits, roller-coasters, carnival games, popcorn, mini golf, and cotton candy; UL for pets and gardening; Vacation for its Vacation Island because it was the closest thing to seasons in the Sims 1. :lovestruc

I loved Makin' Magic. There were the dragon eggs that grew into pets that would eat the flowers and the roller coaster! I remember the first time I played it, it was (graphically) fantastic!
Also, there was a website with downloadable content called Grim Sims. They had all kinds of beautiful objects. I wish it were still around. I kept all my Sims 1 content for years, even after my computer failed. When I switched external Hard Drives, I deleted everything.
Still, I miss it. Nighttime Sims, Sim Freaks and Grim Sims were AWESOME back then. Around the Sims too. And Simorpher and Persimmon Grove. Ack! Too many to count!

Hot Date was BIG when it first came out because it meant leaving your home for the first time. That was so exciting! We had spent months playing in our own little homes or seeing some of our Sims come over to neighbor's houses if we played the neighbors. What freedom to pick up a phone and go someplace else and with someone, if we chose! AND, we could chose new bathing suits and pajamas! The only disappointment was that children couldn't visit the new downtown.
There were so many other cool things that came with Hot Date, such as some wonderfully new interactions and the opportunity to shape Sim's interests through magazines. Plus, Maxis hit it again with the humor of the violin player and the various types of characters at the stores and restaurants.
Perhaps you have to have a sense of Sim history to really appreciate this expansion.

I liked Vacation because I had a weird obsession with building big hotels and I liked that it added quite a bit of variety to the game. And I had such a love/hate relationship with Makin' Magic - my brother and I spent such a long long LONG time saving up a bunch of Magic Coins (was that what they were called???) to finally get our houses in the magic neighbourhood and it just kind of seemed like the journey was much funner than the destination. I really did like that minigame where you had to touch the coloured mushrooms though...

Right, "accidently". :P I'm pretty sure it was always on purpose. At least it was purposely for them. For the caretakers, it was their mistake.
I always had dragons running away. I would have to say my favorite was Pyritie. Burnie burned too much stuff, Torch was too high-maintenance for me, so Pyritie was the perfect choice. (Burnie was the red one, Torch was the purple one, and Pyritie was the golden one.)
I'd have to say my favorite. Along with House Party and Unleashed. I probably would only say House Party due to me only playing it for a few minutes at a time before I couldn't play it anymore. Makin Magic I loved the music, the magic system, (Except the ingredients, most of the time I only got the basic spells.) the nectar press, (Only because of the mix of ingredients that would cause your sim to become a ghost temporarily, since the shed your skin charm never worked for me.)
Unleashed, I LOVED how it added more space. I mean, ten lots gets boring after a while. Plus, having more than two families to play is fun. I'm no good at building.
The only other game I played was Livin' Large, but I can't remember many of the features.

Yeah, I agree.
I struggled to run downtown areas, so I made a lot specially where everything was outside, there were no buildings except one just big enough to house 3 toilets. That lot ran brilliantly on that poor computer, but I built my first ever self built computer during that EP, partly because I desperately wanted to run it properly and partly because I knew I'd need it for future EP's. There's nothing more terrifying than fitting the processor and clamping the fan down that very first time, I still think of that every time I build a new one and it always reminds me of the Hot Date EP :luff:

At the time they came out, I loved Hot Date the best. One thing I miss from TS1 that the other two Sims games have had trouble with is crowds. TS1 Lots were always crammed full of random townies and gave a real city feeling to the area. You need lots of help from mods to get TS2 anywhere near that way and you still don't get sims milling about and all doing different things that you saw in TS1. TS3 is the worst of the three -- you can use mods to get a lot full of sims but they can just stand there for hours and not do a THING except wet themselves all day long.

Hot Date was pretty much the best. I loved the atmosphere of that first downtown. I enjoyed editing the lots into exactly what I wanted. The townies and npcs were entertaining to just watch.
Gonna give Unleashed some love too. I never played much with pets in any version of the game, but Unleashed expanded the home neighborhood and added those nice community lots. It made the neighborhood feel like a place people lived rather than just a random collection of houses. And loved the themed items, the trolley and the zydeco music.
