Failed to find compatible directx 9.0 adapter

Sims 2 usually runs fine on my system, and I actually managed to play it earlier today. But right now I'm getting this error and I'm not sure why. I checked some other threads but the ones I've found have not been too useful.

Windows 7
Intel core i7
8gb of ram

I have had this issue before on my desktop computer that I run the Sims 2 on. Unfortunately, I cannot offer much advice on how to solve the problem. I know I tried downloading directx files again, or updating them, but that probably didn't solve the problem (at least it was no immediate fix).

Now whenever the issues arises I just restart my computer and wait a while until I try to play again. It's a finicky thing; most times restarting will allow the game to work, but other times it won't. I don't know why this error happens, but I know you aren't alone!
