View Full Version : 4 Modules of basement garages + Tutorial

Answering a request (PM) I want offer a tutorial with pictures how to make basement garages by yourself.
It is in Wordformat because I guess it should be the easiest way someone could edit it for the personal use.
As I don't like to do always the same steps starting to build a house and do the puzzle to find the right hight of the basement I made the attached samples for my own use. Maybe others would use them too as starting point for new buildings. Much fun and success.

Thank you, I may never build my own basement garage right (I seem to be rubbish at building anything complex) so I'll have lots of use for your samples!

Great work, hexameter. I am assuming that this works even after the Nightlife patch is applied. I have heard that that patch kills the ability to make a basement garage. (if what you mean by basement garage is one where the driveway slopes downward to the basement door)

Hallo everybody,
Since this is a tutorial, I've moved it to the appropriate section. Thanks!
Thank you very much!
I'm sure all of you could find out these few easy tips. Thank you for the kind comments!
The driveway of this kind was tested in a fresh install of all 3 Sims 2 gameparts, the nl-patch and without any downloads. (last time some minutes ago)
Of course the movements of the cars are not accommodated to the angle of the driveway, but who cares. It works!
Those of you who want another pavement in the driveway or the garage should try to use the invisible driveway which can be found on this site. Put the floortiles in with moveObjects on, then use the driveway. Test it.
Have fun with your sims

Invisible driveway? [thinking about grass-colored or mud-looking tiles] That means my Trailer Trash Sims could park in the back yard. Thanks.

Hi folks,
I threw this together but I think it adresses most of the issues relating to garages and foundations. No cheats whatsoever are needed to make this work, though moveobjects is described to reposition the mailbox/trashcan.
Like I said. I've thrown it together but if the powers that be here feel that it is worthwhile I will redo the whole thing and optimise it for smallest file size (and make a .doc version as well.
The zip contains an html file plus a folder of images
Please let me have opinions good, bad or indifferent cos, I have yet to see this technique describe in any other tutorial ...

mirelly,
This is really a very neat tutorial. Smart uses on the default walls and the wall-foundation.
Is it good to start another new tutorial thread for this tutorial at build mode? Then, just wait for a moderator to move it into this sub-forum...
(After hexameter's following post...)
Lol, I just tried to link similar topics or techniques together to make them easily found. A forum is good for posting modularly, but the infos will get scattered/separate. All I'm trying to do is to link and categorise them back together in my own terms. Errors can occur due to my biases, so I can be misleading sometimes. Trust me, I've been in some cases, it takes a lot of wandering and fooling around just to grab certain pieces of interesting infos I need. Different people express differently with diferent words or phrases, linking them together will also make people aware of what terms they may see.. Making the linkage is for the convinience of other readers as well as myself.
As the amount of tutorials has increased into a long list, I may categorise them more to see if it works or fits.

Thanks for the feedback. I have improved the thing recently but have yet to get around to producing the photos, suitably optimised for a niftier downloading experience ... we all have to pay for bandwidth, don't we? And just cos many of us have mulit-gigabit DSL doesn't mean that a clear 1MB d'l isn't better than 2.4MB one. I have never given much credence to the bigger is better philosophy. ;)

Hi everybody.
First of all thank you 4 that nice tutorial!
I followed every step of this but after finishing my garage, the driveway still "Flyes" over the downway.
After getting a little bit frustratet cause i didnt find a solution for that, i allmost give in. But i finaly found out, that by selling the driveways and then click on UNDO, the driveway will be shown corect. So if annyone else got that problem, maby that will be a solution.

The may be explained by a temporary graphical glitch, in which that the graphica is not graphically corrected while the change is already made.
This can also happen to diagonal walls with boolprop constrainfloorelevation false, just the same fix. May also try to "save" the lot or reload it.

@ soloe_nlt: You have the same result just by changing the colour. I always use the "normal" driveway and after I finished the building, I switch to the transparent one, I downloaded here at mts2.

As this is a tutorial in Word-format you should download it without Q-Xpress. Extract the Zip-file to a separate folder on your hard disc. Then you can open it with word or a word file viewer to read. If you use Q-Xpress I think it will go to downloads, but I don't know exactly. So have a look there and move it elsewhere because it's no game object and not needed for the game, of course.
I hope this will help you.

I'm hoping somebody can help me! I've tried this so many times already, but I get hung up on step 5: Put the parking place in the empty garage. The extension piece will not lie flat - it automatically brings the basement floor up to be even with the driveway. I can't get it to stay as a basement. What am I doing wrong? Help!!

I am obviously doing something wrong, and I have no idea what.
This tutorial, by the way, is nice and easy, and everything works great ... until I want to insert the wall for the garage door. For some reason, I keep getting a message about not being able to cover floor tiles, just like the message you get when you try leveling outside a foundation and you find out that you put floor tiles in the foundation area by mistake. I can put a wall OUTSIDE that row of squares I'm suppose to leave, but not by the foundation as in the tutorial pictures. Putting the wall outside leaves a gap, and I can't fill that in no matter what I do. In fact, I can't even put a wall next to the foundation as pictured in the earlier steps, but I can work around that easily. I just cannot connect the wall to the foundation.
I don't have any floor tiles in the foundation.
I tried putting the wall with the FloorElevation cheat on AND off.
I tried "move_objects on" (Hey, when you're been trying for an hour, you try almost anything!)
I made sure the ground inside the foundation was flat, thinking that the ground curving inside it might be causing the problem. I even tried widening the garage.
I make sure I always have the row of tiles left entirely in the front of the garage, and that I don't elevate them by mistake when I elevate the driveway.
I've tried Googling.
I make sure that the basement foundation above is level.
I'm stumped. This seems to be a relatively easy tutorial .... what stupid thing am I possibly doing wrong?
P.S. At any rate, thank you for providing premade garages. I downloaded the largest one, and am enjoying your effort even as I'm writing this. I gather that a few of us wound up clueless despite your patient efforts. Thank you again!

Well, it has been a while now that I built a lot with an underground garage. I hope I remember well. It's indeed simple to do, so I think it's a problem of the correct height that causes the message concerning the floor tiles. You can check this with temporary stairs. I had that height problem sometimes, too.

I made a build this past week using one of your templates that I uploaded to the Sims2 Exchange, I gave you tks and credit for it with a link to this thread.
I was so glad to see the templates since I couldn't get the tute to download for some reason and even then if the tute is in .doc I can't open it to read it since I don't have Word (long story). So seriously... the templates were a God send.
I wanted to build an exterior replica, mainly the face of a residential design constructed by Jerry Veverka, called Modern Living Cube. That sim build was only possible thanks to you and since uploading it this morning it has nearly 150 downloads so far. I do hope people on the bbs and those downloading see my thread re: your templates or read my blog about them. These are really awesome!!! I owe you one.
