Beginning Clothing Recolor using The Gimp

This Tutorial uses Bodyshop and The GIMP graphics editor (available for free on the web, for installation instructions see here (http://www.modthesims2.com/showthread.php?t=182601)).

With those tools, you can customize your sim's clothing to have new colors and designs on it.

This series of tutes normally live at http://www.sublimesims.net/ and are being posted here at the request of the lovely Tiggerypum. This is a series of tutorials; each tutorial teaches another technique in making changes to sim outfits. See the end of this tutorial for the link to the next one.

1. Hi Guys, today we are going to learn how to do a very basic recolour of an outfit. A basic recolour is a type of skinning where you don’t actually change anything about the texture or the shape of an outfit; you just alter the colour by using a combination of layers and filters in a graphics program.

2. This tutorial uses the most current version of the Gimp available as at 30 th October 2005 (version 2.6.9). The Gimp is an excellent and free image-editing program that can be downloaded from http://gimp-win.sourceforge.net/stable.html. If you have any questions about the basics of using or installing this program, please see the tutorial here (http://www.modthesims2.com/showthread.php?t=182601) or visit the help files on the Gimp site.

3.Ok, now let’s begin. Open up Bodyshop and Click Create Parts.

http://thumbs.modthesims2.com/getimage.php?file=353670

4. Click on Start New Project.

http://thumbs.modthesims2.com/getimage.php?file=353671

5. Click Create Clothing

http://thumbs.modthesims2.com/getimage.php?file=353672

6.Ensure that you have the Female and Adult categories selected, then select Formal.

http://thumbs.modthesims2.com/getimage.php?file=353673

7.Find the Green hippy formal dress, then click Export Selected Textures. (See circled)

http://thumbs.modthesims2.com/getimage.php?file=353674

8. This brings you to the Export screen. Write a title for your project in the box, in this case call it something like tutorial_dress so your project is easy to find for our next stage. Click the tick to export.

http://thumbs.modthesims2.com/getimage.php?file=353675

9. The screen you come to now allows you to preview your work in progress, or change the category of an outfit. At this point we just need it to help us find our project. The path to find your completed project is written on the top right of this screen. (see circled). The path will probably be My Documents/EA Games/ The Sims 2/ Projects/tutorial_dress/. Keep Bodyshop and open up The Gimp.

http://thumbs.modthesims2.com/getimage.php?file=353676

10. In The Gimp click on the File menu choice and select Open.

http://thumbs.modthesims2.com/getimage.php?file=353677

11. Find your project folder following the path provided by Bodyshop earlier.

To explain what you are looking at, the three files below all do different things. In simple terms

body-stdMatBaseTextureName.bmp determines how a skin is coloured or textured

body-stdMatBaseTextureName_alpha.bmp determines what part of body-stdMatBaseTextureName.bmp is visible.

body-stdMatNormalMapTextureName.bmp helps to render bumps and shapes on the sim.

As we are only working on the colour of the outfit today, find and open up the file entitled body_stdMatBaseTextureName.bmp.

http://thumbs.modthesims2.com/getimage.php?file=353678

12. On the floating toolbar Click on the paintpot Fill With Colour or Pattern. Doubleclick on the black upper square about half way down the floating toolbar (see circled). This will allow you to select the foreground colour. The foreground colour is the colour that you’re going to tint your outfit.

http://thumbs.modthesims2.com/getimage.php?file=353679

13. Use the sliders to chose a colour you want to chose and click ok.

http://thumbs.modthesims2.com/getimage.php?file=353680

14. Ensure the paintpot is still selected, that the option FG color fill is selected and that you have selected Fill whole selection. Leave opacity at 100 percent and the mode as Normal.

http://thumbs.modthesims2.com/getimage.php?file=353681

15. Click the menu choice Layer. Chose the option New Layer.

http://thumbs.modthesims2.com/getimage.php?file=353682

16. This brings up the New Layer box. Be sure that the Layer Fill Type Transparency is checked then click ok.

http://thumbs.modthesims2.com/getimage.php?file=353683

17. Fill your layer with your chosen colour. At this point you’re probably panicking going “Eeep! Kathleen! It’s covered over the top of the dress!” Don’t panic guys, it’s supposed to look like this at this point. It will reappear within the next few steps.

http://thumbs.modthesims2.com/getimage.php?file=353684

18. Select the menu choice Dialogs and the option Layers. This brings up the layers dialog box.

http://thumbs.modthesims2.com/getimage.php?file=353685

19. Click on the Mode box and slide it down until you pick Hard Light Mode. (I will mention that the mode is entirely a matter of personal choice, the Gimp defaults to Normal and any choice other than that will create a variation of the effect we want, for the original outfit to show through). Click the red x to close the layers box.

http://thumbs.modthesims2.com/getimage.php?file=353686

20. The dress is now recoloured red. Save your file and close The Gimp once you are happy with the colour. (All I can suggest is if you look at your first go at this and go “Ewwwww” just keep fiddling with it until you’re content.)

http://thumbs.modthesims2.com/getimage.php?file=353687

21. Click the refresh button towards the bottom of the screen (see circled). Your modified dress will now appear on the podium.

http://thumbs.modthesims2.com/getimage.php?file=353688

22. Your recoloured dress will now appear among your Sims outfits.
If you are happy with it, click the 'Import' button to bring it into your game. If not, you can edit and refresh again until you are (then remember to import)

Congratulations, you’ve just done your first basic recolour! I hope you have enjoyed doing this tutorial as much as I’ve enjoyed writing it. Take care Kathleen (Vashti)

Assuming your graphics were NOT blurry, you're having a bodyshop issue. Please check the FAQ for the close blurry fix/info.

Sirith, that is bodyshop, it came with your game. I'm puzzled as to why it might not be working properly.

In the GAME HELP area there are some articles about bodyshop. Maybe this can help you figure out what's going on with your bodyshop.
http://www.modthesims2.com/article.php?t=177332

If not, please post a new thread or in the bodyshop thread (as it isn't really a tutorial issue, but a computer issue) , and give us as much info as you can about what you tried and what happened, etc.

Sorry dude :D , I found it out. There were files in the folder which shouldnt have been there. Some of the downloaded files had been misplaced to the Projects folder. I deleted them and now the bodyshop is exporting the things.
Ne way thanks for the concern.

I tried installing the Gimp, and it just keeps going to the setup. I'm looking for any other installed icons, but even in the start Menu the only thing I can do is select a language, and I've done that about 4 times now. I've also tried doing the setup over, but it's the same story. Any suggestions? :(

Did you try the 'Install Gimp' tutorial? There's 2 programs that Gimp Requires to run.
http://www.modthesims2.com/showthread.php?t=182601

If that doesn't work, please go to http://www.gimp.org/ and look for help there, because I cannot begin to guess what could be going wrong with the install.

Well, there was one program that it made me install with it automatically, but I saw no other one, unless I already had it for some reason. But my boyfriend is a computer genius, so he's going to take a look at it for me. If he can't figure it out, I'll try the gimp website. Thank you! <3

I downloaded Gimp and everything worked fine until I got to the part about the hard light. I clicked on that and closed it, but the pants didn't reappear. It stayed blue. Did I do something wrong?

Oh My goodness!! I just loved your tutorials!! :) :):) :). I was able to follow through each and every step of the way. And I was able to make several re-colors of some really awful Maxis clothing into something worth having my Sims wear. Even the 2nd tute of the series was easy to follow. Thank you so very much for writing something that even I could understand. Now I've turned into a recolor-a-holic!!
The next step is Tute #3. Wish me luck :)
Thanks again.

Woohoo!! That is so very cool!! And it's even better not having to spend a cent on it :-) Hey, I'm about half way through doing a shadows and highlights tute for Gimp (I'm stuck half way through writing it right now) and Tig is doing a details tute, so by the time you're finished you should have a complete bag of tricks and mostly be able to do about anything you want..

Do me a favour and drop me a pm and show me some of your stuff.. I'd love to see..

Cheers

Vashti71,

I can't wait to see your next tutorial, I'm sure it will as easy to follow as the others. Have you ever thought about printing them up and offering them to the site for sale? Some of the profits could go to you and possibly some going to MTS2 to keep it running. I know I would buy a copy. Any way, it's just an idea.
Thanks again for writing such wonderful tutes. And I will PM you with some of the re-colors I've done soon.

Raven, reading back I see you have done all 3 clothing tuts (but just posted in this one). The 4th (and another after it) are in the works. It just takes a lot of time to get things right.

While I won't put words in Vashti's mouth, I believe that she (like myself and Delphy and many others here) believe in freely sharing things. That's also why she chose to do these tutorials with GIMP, because it's free, and thus accessible for all.

JeffandMandie, go to the projects folder and look for your folder (likely you named it 'tutorial_dress') Look at the files in that folder - you can use the 'filmstrip' view to look at the graphics easily. Is your new texture/color there? Are there exactly 3 bmp files (and one proj file?)

Simguy182

there is no OK, there is Help, Ignore, cancel, and export. Is it export your talking about?

The message is sort of self explanatory :) bmp format cant save with transparency like other formats (or atleast thats what i know), thus when you try to save a bmp that has transparency in any part of the graphic, that message will pop up. It also cant handle to save all the layers so it must flatten the image.

Clicking export should flatten the image in the saved .bmp file (your graphic will keep layers and transparencies unless you close it), getting rid of layers and all in the final image. That way the image will save correctly and bodyshop should be able to import it... :)

...So... if anyone is like :| after this explanation, then to make it short, choosing export will save the image correctly as a bmp (with no layers and such things the format cant use) and you will be able to import it to bodyshop :) BUT when you close your image and open the bmp image again, it wont have layers and everything you had before :)

If your project uses several layers and you dont want to lose them to make further changes (like when i once did a dress that had 23 layers :|), i recomend you to make a copy of your graphic somewhere in your computer as a .xcf file (which i think is like the equibalent of a psd file for GIMP, it retains layers and everything)

:)

*Sorry for my not so good english :| *

If the content when you start your game is fine and sharp, but then goes blurry after a while, your content is fine. Your system, on the other hand, is barely up to running the game, and thus is dropping your settings back as it is running out of resources. Go look in the HELP area for 'game gets blurry' or such. Unfortunately the news is going to be that you'll probably need to invest some $$ into upgrading things on your computer.

Simguy182
18th Oct 2006, 9:47 PM
I did everything you said to do and it was all fine until I saw it in my game. IT WAS ALL BLURRY :!: :!: :!: :faceslap: What did I do wrong? please help me.

If it got blurry once it was in the game but was correct in bodyshop then it must be due to your graphic settings. Low blurrs the stuff alot to make the game faster, meduim still blurs a little and high should have the textures show like they are meant to be but at the cost of game speed. Try to check your game graphic settings in the options panel

tiggerypum
18th Oct 2006, 10:17 PM
secondly, body shop does not give you a good closeup view.

So... you could be having a bodyshop issue (are the graphics you're editing 1024x1024??) if they're not, you need to look in the FAQ here for the bodyshop blur info.

If that is not the problem, you need to look at ScreenShots 101 on the site and adjust your game settings.

Question? Where are the career uniform clothes located? I want to recolor the lab coats from the science career track as well as the swat or military uniforms

career clothing and NPC clothing (deliver guy, maid, etc) are not found in bodyshop. Some have extracted them and i think they can be found at varioussimmers site. Extracting them by yourself requires SimPE and is a bit hard to do :)

Extracted career/NPC clothes can be recolored normaly, however, they wont show up for the career as an uniform color (if you make a pink militar outfit, sims wont wear it to work ever)

I like to use photoshop When i shall work with edits, but since the recolor did not show up in preview in Bodyshop, i tried Gimp. Didn't work as a preview either.
Could i please get an advice on why it's not showing up in Bodyshop as a preview?

tiggerypum

sakrayami,

You must be missing a step.

In your projects folder, do you see your new graphic in the folder? (it has to be named exactly the same as it was originally - body~stdMatBaseTextureName.bmp

Secondly, I see that in this tutorial, Vashti didn't actually include a graphic with a circle for IMPORT. Once your dress looks good when you hit the refresh, you need to click on the IMPORT button - which is the button with the folder and the arrow below that - in order to put your finished dress _in the game_.

Let me know if either of these helps you.

And making skintones is like altering an outfit, only with lots and lots more graphics, same basic idea though.

CEVicious

well I tried and tried to make a skin tone but it didnt' work...I dind't double post.....

tiggerypum
12th Nov 2006, 4:33 AM
CEVicious, go back one page, look at the bottom of the page, and then tell me again you did not post twice in a row in this thread. It's not a good idea to argue with the moderators on the site. And please do not post twice in a row (or more) in a thread, if you have something to add and your post is the last one on the list, please use the 'edit' button to change your post. Thank you.

I don't know what you did or not, but this particular tutorial is pretty basic. Skin tones honestly use the same idea, but there are a LOT of files for you to replace, and you'd need to replace all of them. Perhaps you might want to do more skinning projects before tackling a skintone. There are many things to recolor in bodyshop, once you learn the idea, recoloring the other things is not really that different.

And while we're on 'board behaviors'.... in addition to not posting twice in a row, it's expected in a tutorial thread that you are asking questions about _that tutorial_ and/or your ability to complete _that tutorial_ as written. It's important to keep things on topic, or all the different threads with info will become a muddle.

If you want to post a new question, go to the main skinning board here: http://www.modthesims2.com/forumdisplay.php?f=20 and then hit the 'new topic' button. Give it a descriptive title (not 'HELP') but say 'How can I --and whatever the question is'. That way people looking at the board can respond more easily and you're more likely to have someone read it who can offer advice.

Hello Tig,

Thank you for checking back on this thread to see if we have questions.

Can you point me to instructions for taking an existing skin and making it more transparent on the Sims model? I remember this was easy in Sims 1. I'll probably feel dumb once you tell me.

Thank You,

do the next tutorials, which deal with the alpha file. Make the alpha gray instead of black or white and you'll get 'transparent' and skin will show through. Only works on skintight areas correctly, as does alpha editing because the shape of the mesh doesn't change.

On an 'alpha' mesh (one with separate parts designed to be alpha editable not part of the base body) if you can make it see through or not depends on more complex settings and how the mesh was created, some cannot be made 'see through' but only have parts cut away from them. (pressed for time cannot go into more detail right now regarding alpha meshes)

Everything you need? You mean, like the game?

Perhaps you have some custom content crashing bodyshop. Try putting your saved sims and downloads folder on the desktop for the moment, and run bodyshop. See if that fixes it.

If it does, go to the GAME HELP area and look for advice about the game crashing and how to track down a bad download, and follow the suggestions there to find your bad download(s)

I get to the part where I am supposed to save it, and had the same message that says it can't save and it has to export it, but it doesn't say where it goes to, and most importantly,

Well, my problem is that since I re-installed TS2 Body Shop doesn't work. I mean, I did recolours before but now it won't work.

The program itself starts, and I can start a new project, safe it and I can even open the Mesh (or whatever this sample is called) in Microsoft Picture It (the program I used before too). I can change it, place graphics on it, ... and all those things.

BUT when I save it, as bmp-file as the original is, it does not overwrite the old file. And I cannot delete it by hand, that just don't work. And when I click the refresh-button, nothing happens. There's still the one I used to change, not the one I made. And if I safe it, it's the same.

What can I do to make Body Shop work?

Sorry if this question was up already...

vavz and dhanni - I'm not sure exactly what the problems are, but it's pretty clear it's coming from the saving - that your new graphics are not ending up named correctly into your projects folder. You could double check that your project folder is 'read-write' protected, so you can write your files there.

At this point, I'd start a new project, and do a really really simple change, like scribble a big X on the front of the outfit. And just keep working at it until you can figure out how to save the graphic to the correct place with exactly the right filename, so that a refresh in bodyshop will do what you expect. Make sure you are saving to BMP format.

Thanks for the tutorial, I added a logo and stuff to one of the plain hoodies. :P

I have a question, how would someone make the new clothing into a package file to put on Modthesims2 for others to use?

tiggerypum
27th Dec 2006, 9:51 PM
Prashanna, when you 'import' your outfit to the game (you did look at it _in game_ right) a file will be saved to your 'saved sims' folder - that is the finished recolor. It will have a bunch of numbers in front of the name you gave your initial project. I usually view that folder and sort by date. You can rename that file to anything you want (and I suggest you name it with something like your initials/nick, the gender, age, and something really descriptive)

Be sure to look at the requirements for pictures, and that you know which ep is required for the particular outfit you recolored (if any). Creator guidelines is very helpful for that. :)

Yeah, somehow it is all Ok! I am so excited! I don't know what happened, but I went back into the Body Shop, and somehow I found the file for the red hippy dress, all finished and perfect! It had worked but for some reason when I clicked refresh nothing happened and I had no way to know it had.
But now, I did it over and over and now, whatever was "stuck" is "unstuck" and it works when I click refresh, like it is supposed to.
Thanks so much for a great tutorial, I have been wanting to learn how to create my own stuff, for a long time, and it is so fun, being able to just recolor stuff. I used the info from this tutorial and even recolored some hair, so that was fun! I am sure there is a better way to do it, but it worked.
Thanks again,
Denise Hanni

Other than following the steps and recoloring the dress, I also used this tutorial to recolor hair. It really works! Hopefully this will become the building blocks of my Sim designing future.

I'm very happy to see that people are putting guides for recoloring with the Gimp on here. ^^;''
I also have a different way of doing the same thing, which I've uploaded a set to flickr explaining.
My way is better if you want to keep the original shades, but the way you've posted has a slightly different effect, which I used to use, and it is a good way to recolor to specific colors.

The URL for my tutorial version is;
http://www.flickr.com/photos/secretia/sets/72157594496556507/

I really didn't think it was so thorough as to put on here, just a quick tutorial with images.

Also, for those with the .bmp transparency glitch, just say "export" and don't pay attention to it. It hasn't messed anything up for me ever, and I've recolored just about everything I've ever downloaded. Which is alot. xD

I did everything, but when I go to save the image in The Gimp, it says (whatever type of file i've chosen - usually bmp, jpeg or png does not support transparency files. I don't know what to do.

So when you save the dress do you select export?

tiggerypum
16th Feb 2007, 7:20 AM
yaxxi, when you are happy with how your project looks, you click the IMPORT button (folder with arrow). Then it will appear in your game. It writes a file to your saved sims folder, which is the finished file that you could share with others (although sharing this level of basic recolor is probably not high on the list of things to do)

Thanks so much for this tutorial. It was easy to follow, and made recolouring of clothes so much less scary and hard than they originally seemed.

I had fun playing with all the different layer modes, and now have a version of that dress in a colour I adore

Also, thanks for making tutorials in Gimp. I'm confused enough with the whole recolour thing, without trying to translate a tutorial at the same time.

Smartthinking,

#1 don't quote entire messages for no reason!
#2 Gimp is a program that you have to download and install onto your computer. Did you try following the link in the beginning of the tutorial that links to another tutorial that explains how to install gimp? You'll have to go to another site, get gimp, and install it according to the directions (it needs a runtime I think, in addition to gimp)

Leih, to use tutorials you need to read carefully and click links if necessary. Right at the beginning of the tutorial:

"This Tutorial uses Bodyshop and The GIMP graphics editor (available for free on the web, for installation instructions see here)."

The word 'here' is hotlinked. If you uhm, clicked it.... it would take you to another page with instructions and a link to a site that has gimp for download.

Rosie, this tutorial is about as simple as we can make it. You need to read the file into gimp, just like you would read a file into _any other program you use on the computer_ I suggest if you still are lost that you get someone local to look over your shoulder with you and help you figure it out, because I don't think we can explain it any better online.

imamonstergr, ignore the message that say it doesn't allow transparency... It works anyways if you just say "ok" or "export", I forget which it was (just press the button that means closest to "accept" xP)... Anyways, it'll automatically squash the layers together, and there won't be transparency anymore! Tada.

tiggerypum

angelthatishonest - first of all, if you have more to add, use the EDIT button, do not post twice in a row with the same sort of problem.

Secondly - what you're saying isn't enough for anyone, even with our crystal balls to have any idea what your problem is. You need to describe exactly exactly what you were doing, exactly where you're looking, maybe even take a screenshot. In all likihood if you read the directions very carefully you will find the little thing you're missing that is causing these problems.

You might also go and try a beginning GIMP tutorial, if you're having problems figuring out how to load or save files. Meaning a generic 'learn how to use gimp' from someplace on the web, and then come back here to learn about the sims part.

HELP! What should I do?

Click export. It will export them to bmp to save, but you'll still have your layers to work on in the Gimp.

I would reccomend that you also save a copy of your working file periodically to your desktop or another folder as an .xcf file which will save your layers. That way if there is a crash or a freeze (which always happens to me when I don't save this way) you will still have all of your work.

Carmyy - that sure looks like the file. I don't use gimp. One suggestion I'd make - can you put a copy of the file on, say your desktop or into your mydocuments folder, and try that - in case the length of the filename and all the folders or something is making gimp ill?

dragonarts
27th Aug 2007, 6:11 AM
Carmyy,
I use Gimp all the time, and here's another suggestion for you. Instead of "file -> open-> {filename}" in the Gimp, open your project folder, (myDocuments\ EAGames\ TheSims\ Projects\ tutorial_dress) then RIGHT click on the .bmp file you want to open, and click on open with... > This brings up a dialog box with a list of programs on your computer that you can try opening the file with. Choose the Gimp from that list and click. This will open the Gimp if it isn't already open, and open the bmp you want to edit. I find that Gimp likes this better than opening things from within the program.

You do need to get gimp, and x11 (read and follow various links - I will say the page documentation is not the most straightforward) but you should be able to get it working, I did.

Bodyshop comes with your game. So once you get GIMP running, you ought to pretty much be able to do this tutorial.

i did...and it shows the effects on gimp but then i save and refresh on bodyshop and its totally flat and boring and just the new color. believe me, ive messed around with opacity, and the modes and even looked at a tut at sublimesims. and it looks great on gimp...but not on bodyshop.

the only thing that even comes out worth even looking at (and btw in my opinion its looks good) is my acessiories' recolors (however u spell).

i am one of those people who can barely turn the computer on so i have never been able to do anything with bodyshop. but yesterday i read your tut and got gimp. well after several failed attempts last night i slept on it. this morning i decided to try a couple of things different and look more closely at the directions.
big DUH! - maybe i should try saving it!!!
i have my first thing that i made all myself. i'm so happy. i guess i'll than my sister for showing me the site. thnx dani.

Thanks for the tutorial! I've recolored some underwear and shirts and stuff just so I have more options for my adult female sims when they go shopping. I've deleted my whole downloads folder, so I need more options than just Maxis stuff! (I don't have any SPs at the moment, though I'm thinking of buying one or two with more clothing at one point.)

Hippie dress... Does that come with University? 'Coz if so, than sometimes some of the clothing can't be recoloured. And if you downloaded it, it may have a creator block on it which won't allow it to be modified in any way.

simslover - then you didn't do everything exactly like in the tutorial. In all likelihood you are having problems when you're saving the bmp file - you need to write over the bmp file in the projects folder - because that is where bodyshop will load the graphic from when you click that little refresh button.

Saraswati5

sasukelover the thing is, the techiques are mostly exactly the same regardless of what you're making. The only real difference with hair and clothes is that you get multiple files and you need to alter them all.

I would recommend doing the next two tutes, then playing and seeing if you come up with some effects you like :D Oh and myself and a couple of others are actually doing a couple more Gimp tutes right now, but they won't cover skins.. just things like shadows and highlights, detail etc. Expect tute 4 probably within the next month or so if everything goes well.

Okay, I think I know what your problem might be.

Observe on this picture:

http://thumbs.modthesims2.com/getimage.php?file=353674

All of the boxes are outlined in blue, except the one selected, which is outlined in green. You need to be on the page looking at the one outlined in green, or you cannot export it. Your bodyshop mannequin needs to be wearing it to export it. It's important to click on the image of the dress to select it for exporting, otherwise, BodyShop will do nothing and your export button will be greyed out. :)

When you installed the game, did you use the default installation path?

If you did, did you click on the folder called Sims2, and if it is empty, can you play the game at all?

Wow :!: I actually did it! This is my first time with this sort of thing, and it's great! Thank you thank you thank you for posting this tutorial. I tried recolouring with a different tutorial, but it was for Adobe (which I don't have), and I couldn't figure out how to do it with Gimp. I usually have trouble with this sort of thing, but this tutorial was well written and easy to follow. I can't tell you how much I appreciate this! :lovestruc

After testing my recolour in my game (works perfectly), I've even gone back and done some more recolours already, just to see what else I can do. On to the next Gimp tutorial! :D

Hi- I have a mac- I followed your tutorial and ended up with a red dress I was happy with - but when I exported it back to bodyshop- the dress shows up completely blue (like the texture's disappeared and it's just showing mesh or something) I have no idea what is causing this- I opened the texture file and it opens up fine by itself as a separate picture but isn't showing up in bodyshop.

With the Windows installer version I dl'd, when I got to step #20, save and close, I get a prompt recommending I export before saving because the BMP plugin can't handle layes. I did as it recommended, and it shows up in Body Shop ok, which it doesn't if I clicked ignore, but I am concerned that I am missing a plugin with this version?

Here is a link to the page I dl'd the installer from,

I have the same problem..
what are we supposed to do now? :(
In the Gimp 2.6 version, there is a thing that says windows ==>Click on it and then it says "Dockable Dialogues" with an arrow, showing more options==>click on "Layers" which is also key command "Ctr+L" and it will bring up this box with all your layers on it and at the top it says "mode" with a little box that you can select options from...click on the little box (it is a drop down thingy) , it is separated into 5 different "categories" (there is no title for these, they are just separated by lines) Hard Light is in the third "category" it goes "Dodge", "burn" and then "Hard Light" followed by "Soft Light" and so on.

I hope that this helps...you have to kinda search for it if you are a beginner (which I am too:faceslap: ) but it gets easier every time. Also, is anyone having the problem of hitting "refresh" in Body Shop and then having nothing happen? :( because I need help with that... I'm thinking that there is a missing plug-in somewhere...

I figured out if you have GIMP 2.6.6 make sure the new layer that was the color you picked is highlighted and in the gimp bar that says layers, channels, paths, and undo there above the opacity slider is a dropdown box that says mode. Click it and you will find hard light there.

I made a nice peach recolor but instead of choosing the hard light mode I chose Burn and it made the color I chose look so nice since I had originally chose a dark pink color, but the light coloring I got using Burn looked so much nicer

Hello Sarawati5: This was a very good tuturial, thanks. If you're still around, maybe you can explain "save" a bit. Hi there, nice tutorial, I'm having an issue though. I followed everything you had here, up to where I want to save. I'm on a mac, so it does the whole 'your image should be exported before it can be saved cause bmp plug-in can't handle layers' thing. If I choose 'merge visible layers' and hit 'export', everything looks fine in GIMP, but when I preview in body shop the dress is a completely different color than red! It's like the colors of the green background layer and the red new layer are mixing when the visible layers are merged? I don't know how to fix it...

Bitmaps can't have layers at all... whether you're on a PC or a Mac. I'm thinking that maybe something is going wrong while exporting... that perhaps only certain layers are being exported. I would suggest flattening the whole image and just doing a straight "save" (not "export").

I am on a Mac too and I just started trying this tonight... had the same problem at first. When you go to save and the menu pops up, choose the option that says "flatten image" instead of "merge visible layers" (which is the default for some reason). Then click Export. Then go into bodyshop and have it reload your file, it should come up the right color now. **Also, if you can't see the texture of the dress underneath your recolor once you do this, change the filter to Soft Light instead of Hard.

I typed up a help file for how to do the second tutorial on Mac, if anyone wants it.

On the top toolbar click on windows and go down to select dockable dialogs then find layers on the choice bar that comes up, it should open another window and on that window it will say normal with a down arrow next to it, click the arrow and go down to find hard light.

On the new version, you have 3 boxes open. 1 is the toolbox, 2 is the window you are creating in, and 3 is the Layers, Channels, Paths... Look in box 3, the very first tab (looks like white towels folded up) is the Layers section. Directly below that tab is the word LAYERS and then below that is MODE. If you click on the dropdown box to the right of MODE, you will find what you are looking for!
