Before you start!!

Any custom content is a challenge to make, and if you want to do it right it will require concentration, patience, effort, and perseverance. There is no reason why anyone shouldn't be able to make a major, if it doesn't work, re-read the tutorial, check you didn't miss any steps, and if all else fails; just start over. Don't give up. You can make it work!!

Feel free to redistribute this tutorial, and the files that accompany it, in full or in part - but please give clear credit to me (whiterider (http://www.modthesims2.com/creator/whiterider)) and a link to http://www.modthesims2.com/creator/whiterider

Included in the .rar file attached are the following files:
- The .package I created in the process of writing the tutorial, so you can have a look inside it to see what's going wrong
- skilltemplate.txt - as described in the BCONs section

Programs you'll need:
SimPE (http://sims.ambertation.de) (http://sims.ambertation.de)
A Graphics program - I use PaintShopPro 7, any other program such as Photoshop will do, as long as it supports layers.
You need to install FrikaC's Majors Made Easier hack (http://www.modthesims2.com/showthread.php?t=107858) (http://www.modthesims2.com/creator/FrikaC)

Planning:

You need an idea of what you want to do before you start - that means you need a title for your major, a short description of the major as a whole, eight class titles, and one primary and three secondary skills.
Now you need to choose the major you're going to clone from. Because we can change everything except which careers your major links to, we will choose the Maxis major with the most appropriate set of linked careers. You can find a list of majors and the careers they link to on Page 9 of your Uni booklet, or you can use this list:
Psychology - Paranormal, Law Enforcement, Show Business, Education, Intelligence, Law
Drama - Show Business, Politics, Athletics, Drama, Entertainment
Art - Artist, Paranormal, Culinary, Architecture, Journalism
Philosophy - Slacker, Culinary, Paranormal, Journalism
Biology - Natural Science, Law Enforcement, Medicine, Education, Oceanography
Economics - Business, Politics, Show Business, Intelligence, Music
Literature - Criminal, Slacker, Show Business, Adventure, Entertainment, Music
Mathematics - Natural Science, Science, Criminal, Architecture, Gamer
History - Military, Artist, Politics, Law
Physics - Science, Medicine, Paranormal, Gamer
Political Science - Politics, Show Business, Military, Intelligence, Law

Creating your package

Run SimPE, and open the object workshop
http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t161/whites_undeletables/majors_tutorial/workshop1.jpg
Click Start and wait for the loading bar to go across - this may take a few minutes, be patient.
http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t161/whites_undeletables/majors_tutorial/workshop2.jpg
Now, in the Object Workshop, select “Other” then “Sim Type”. Pick whichever major you're going to clone, for this tutorial we will use Art. Select it, and hit Next.
http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t161/whites_undeletables/majors_tutorial/workshop3.jpg
Make sure you are cloning the object not recolouring it, and check all the boxes.
http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t161/whites_undeletables/majors_tutorial/workshop4.jpg
Ignore this screen and just hit Finish.
http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t161/whites_undeletables/majors_tutorial/workshop5.jpg
You can ignore the Scenegraph Wizard too - just hit OK
http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t161/whites_undeletables/majors_tutorial/scenegrapher.jpg
Save your file into a new folder, somewhere you will remember it. It doesn't really matter what you call it - but you need to have your name and the name of the major somewhere in the filename. I use the format major_majorname_myname_date - so this major, created on the 10th December 2006, is “major_tutorial_whiterider_1206”
http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t161/whites_undeletables/majors_tutorial/save1.jpg
http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t161/whites_undeletables/majors_tutorial/save2.jpg

Making it your major

Once you've saved your file, you will be brought to the Object Data view (OBJD resource file). I the text box at the top of the lower pane, replace “Major - Art” (Or the name of whichever major you cloned from) with “Major - yourmajorname” - in this case “Major - Tutorial”
Now click “get GUID”
http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t161/whites_undeletables/majors_tutorial/objd1.jpg
The GUID dialogue will pop up, if you have already registered a GUID block just log in, if not “Register new user”. The object name will fill itself with whatever you've put in the Object Data file, once you're logged in and happy with the object name, click “Register new object”, and your very own custom GUID will appear in the GUID box. Copy and paste it into the Fallback and Original GUID fields, too.
http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t161/whites_undeletables/majors_tutorial/objd2.jpg
Hit commit and move onto the Catalogue Description (CTSS resource file). Open it from the panel on the left, and select the first line of text - it will have the name of the major you cloned from in it. In the left hand text box at the top of the bottom panel, type the name of your major. Then select the second line of text and do the same, but this time you're entering the description for your major - what appears when you're selecting a major with the blue panel in game. Hit Commit file in the top right corner of the bottom panel.
http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t161/whites_undeletables/majors_tutorial/ctss.jpg
Now open the Text Lists (STR# Resource File). This file contains the names of all the classes in your major. Line 0x002 has the title of the first semester, 0x004 has the second, 0x006 has the third, 0x008 has the fourth etc.
http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t161/whites_undeletables/majors_tutorial/classes1.jpg
Click on each of the lines and replace the text with your own, like you did with the Catalogue Description. Once you're done, click “Default lang only” - this is very important, if you don't do it your major will not work with non-US versions of the game.
http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t161/whites_undeletables/majors_tutorial/classes2.jpg
If you want to include a copyright notice in your file, this is a good time to do it. Pick any one of the lines and write your notice in the right-hand text box. Then hit “Commit File”, and Save.
http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t161/whites_undeletables/majors_tutorial/classes3.jpg

Creating a custom icon

Open the jpg/tga/png Image file (IMG Resource File), right-click the file in the right hand panel, and select “Extract”. Save as a .png

http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t161/whites_undeletables/majors_tutorial/icon5.jpg

When creating your icon, you need a simple block image, one colour. To make it fit in with the game's colour scheme you should use classy Maxis blue ;)
R:5 G:6 B:113
If you have no idea what that is, just use the eyedropper tool to take the colour from the old icon. The background must be transparent - it will look horrifically tacky otherwise.

A mini-tutorial on making custom icons can be found here (http://www.modthesims2.com/showthread.php?t=269957).

Now you can go back into SimPE, right-click the image file again, and select Replace, then pick your new file.
http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t161/whites_undeletables/majors_tutorial/icon22.jpg
When asked if SimPE should reload the file, say yes.
http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t161/whites_undeletables/majors_tutorial/icon23.jpg
Tada! Your custom icon appears!!
http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t161/whites_undeletables/majors_tutorial/icon24.jpg

Setting up Skills

This section is extremely delicate. You have no idea how badly I screwed up my Witchcraft major when I discovered this technique. SAVE.

Save your file!!

Open the Behaviour Constants (BCON Resource File) and scroll down to “Behaviour Constant: Class Req - Cleaning Max”. Some of the lines in the lower panel will have alphanumeric codes in them. Select these lines, and set the bottom value of the two numbers on the left to 0.
http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t161/whites_undeletables/majors_tutorial/skillreqs1.jpg
Do the same for all the Class Req BCONs, commit each file, and then save.
http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t161/whites_undeletables/majors_tutorial/skillreqs2.jpg

This is the complicated bit!
You need to create a new document in Notepad, Word, or another word processor, or you can use a pencil and paper.
Create a table. Along the top, you need “Skill 1”, “Skill 2”, “Skill 3” and down the side; the numbers 1-8. The numbers represent each semester of your major - 0x01 is the first Freshman semester, 0x08 is the last Senior semester etc.
There is a template table you can use for this if you wish, included in the downloadable .rar file.

http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t161/whites_undeletables/majors_tutorial/table1.jpg

University is a preparation for the world of work (ahem), and so we want to give your simmies a good grounding in everything. In the first 7 boxes - that's Skills 1, 2 &3 in 0x01 and 0x02, and Skill 1 in 0x03 - fill in each simmie skill as you see fit. For example:

http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t161/whites_undeletables/majors_tutorial/table2.jpg

Now that you've given your students good foundations, it's time to specialise. Choose one main skill required for your major, and three secondary skills. For the purposes of this tutorial, I shall use Creativity as my main skill, and Logic, Cooking and Mechanical as my secondary skills. Now fill out the rest of your skills table as per this system:
0x03 - Skill one already decided; Skills 2 & 3 are any two of your main or secondary skills at level 2
0x04 - The two main/secondary skills not used in 0x03, both at level 2; and one main/secondary skill from 0x03 at level 3
0x05 - Two main/secondary skills, excluding the level 3 skill in 0x04, both at level 3
0x06 - The last main/secondary skill at level 3, and another main/secondary skill at level 4
0x07 - Two main/secondary skills at level 4
0x08 - One secondary - not main - skill at level 4, and your main skill at level 5.
You will now have something similar to this:
http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t161/whites_undeletables/majors_tutorial/table3.jpg
So that's the planning done - now to implement it!

Get back to Behaviour Constant: Class Req - Cleaning Max. Now look at your table, and find each entry for Cleaning. My example table only has Cleaning once - 0x03, at level 1. Select the corresponding line, and type the correct value into the box where you put your 0s earlier. Remember that the values are multiplied by one hundred, so a skill at level 1 needs 100 in that box, level 2 needs 200 etc. Fill in all the values and commit. Now do the same for Behaviour Constant: Skill Req - Cleaning Min.
http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t161/whites_undeletables/majors_tutorial/skillreqs3.jpg
Go through and do the same for all the Skill Requirement BCONs, and Save.
http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t161/whites_undeletables/majors_tutorial/skillreqs4.jpg
Have a look through the other BCON files - you can change class times and lengths, the number of GPA points lost if your sim misses a final exam, the impact of your classes on a sim's mood, and zillions of other interesting things. Have a play around and see what you can come up with.

Testing

You're almost done!
Run the game, making sure you have FrikaC's Majors Made Easier hack installed, and enter a University lot. Use Majors Made Easier to assign your major.
http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t161/whites_undeletables/majors_tutorial/testing1fixed.jpg
http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t161/whites_undeletables/majors_tutorial/testing2fixed.jpg
http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t161/whites_undeletables/majors_tutorial/testing3fixed.jpg
http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t161/whites_undeletables/majors_tutorial/testing4.jpg
If it worked, Congratulations! Well done! If not, go back, double-check all the steps, and have another go. :) And if you get stuck, post here and I'll answer any questions.

Aaaaand don't forget, if you chose to upload to upload your major (go on!!), the Creator Guidelines (http://www.modthesims2.com/showthread.php?t=214761) are king!!
Good luck!

Great tutorial, easy to follow and now my sims are studying geology.

Do you know of a way to change the learning icon that appears over the sims head when studying? Right now when my sim studies the math icon shows up.

I'm glad you found the tutorial useful :)

I was looking at that the other week, as it happens, but while I did find some odd inconsistencies which seem to suggest that it is possible to change the icon.. it doesn't seem to work in any rational pattern - or rather, it doesn't matter if you put in History, Poly Sci, or Physics - Biology will always show the Art icon if you try to change it :wtf:

Hi

I wanted to make your major but when I got to the "Once you've saved your file, you will be brought to the Object Data view (OBJD resource file). I the text box at the top of the lower pane, replace “Major - Art” (Or the name of whichever major you cloned from) with “Major - yourmajorname” - in this case “Major - Tutorial”
Now click “get GUID"" stage It did'nt bring me to the Object Data view

In that case, just open Object Data yourself - it's in the resource list in the top left of the SimPE screen, as "Object Data (OBJD)".

Hi,

I have a problem with a major that I cloned from Biology. It works great until the 5th semester starts then the game application crashes. I tried it several times and it bombed. I ran the biology major and that worked fine in the 5th semester. SO, thinking I had a hex value entered incorrectly somewhere, I completely rebuilt the major and it crashed as soon as the 5th semester started. Would you look at it and let me know where I went wrong?

It has it's own GUID = 0x00318F04
SimPE 0.30.2.20832 alpha
All EP's (except Seasons)
Running Numenors Legacy system in up to PETS EP mode.

I've fussed with it some more. It's just the 5th semester that's bad. I can cheat to the 5th in biology, then change majors and the game reverts to 4th semester and crashes as soon as it goes into 5th. I can set it for 6 in biology, then change to fisheries and it works fine after that.

thanks

What happens if you try cloning a different major?

I'll have a look at this once I've fixed the hack conflict in my shiny new Seasons install (woot!), I'll be testing with all EPs sans Pets. Did you fiddle with any of the BCONs other than Skills?

porkypine
7th Mar 2007, 12:35 AM
HI, I just got home. I'll test my other majors and see if they have the same problem. I will also reinstall the legacy system because when i first created the major, I was using the Pre-Seasons version of the Legacy system (I don't have Seasons yet) and when I created them, the major did not crash. but when one of my testers told me about a text overrun, then I looked at it again and it crashed on 5.

The only difference being the day I tested it again and that I had upgraded my legacy system. Unfortunately, I overwrote the previous version (I usually keep my old stuff but not this time).

If my pets legacy crashes I will try the UNI legacy and see if that crashes. If so, I will reinstall the legacy and try UNI only. anyway,. I'll report my findings back here probably later tonight or tomorrow.

If my other majors crash on 5 - then I would suspect something in the Seasons legacy version because they are all cloned from different majors.

Thanks! :D

I am off for systematic testing of my other majors.

-------------------------

3-6-07 Update: Ok, I let my computer cool overnight. Turned it on used the college adjuster mod by TwoJeffs, like I had done before installing the Legacy system Seasons upgrade and moved my sim to teh end of 4th semester., then I removed all mods from the lot and sent him to his final. He came back and walked into the 5th semester just fine. I will test this further to determine which mod conflicts with the Legacy upgrade. or if it jsut went away. Not enough data to prove conclusively what crashed it.

Yikes! partially carbonized my dinner while playing with this stuff. Time for dinner. My mom always told us that carbon is good for your teeth.

thank you for this tutorial. i made my first major its the prima ballerina. every thing works right so far but when i play my game goes onto the windows and i have to pull it back up. i dont know if this is a crashing. but i remeber berfore i made the major it was doing the same thing. i havent played in 3 days. well yesterday my sisters said it was not doing that, then i put my major on and it was. i hope you can understand what i mean. i mean with me trying to explain the problem its kinda complicated to explain.

porkypine
7th Mar 2007, 5:33 AM
Ok. Upon further testing I think I've found the reason. At first, I thought I had made an error on my fisheries cloned from biology major. But on further testing I also found that Tools To Live By also crashed in the same place. (suspicious)

So, I started eliminating all the mods I had loaded to see if one of them was conflicting with the Seasons version of the Legacy system. Well the 1st major worked fine as always but the other two crashed as 5th semester started. So, I rebuilt Fisheries from scratch following your instructions and ran it. It still crashed in semester 5.

Now the only difference between the successful Hunting Major versus the crashing Fisheries and Tools majors was the way I constructed it. On hunting, I followed the instructions in both yours and NataSqui's tutorials - http://modthesims2.com/showthread.php?t=170398 Each had something the other tutorial was lacking...

When I created the other two versions that crash in the 5th semester, I only followed your major. So, I will go through them both side buy side and see where I went wrong and get back to you. Probably this weekend sometime.

It's late and I have to work tomorrow... agina. gotta get my 40 hours in so I have money to play sims! :D

Anyway, I'll figure out what I left out and get back to you.

Nysha
7th Mar 2007, 12:16 PM
Thanks porkypine, I'm not sure what 's happened here as this method never causes problems for me, I'll be interested to know what NataSqui has that I don't :P

tacos, if your game was doing this before you created the major, then it's not a problem with the major - which doesn't have the power to crash your whole game anyway. Try here: http://www.modthesims2.com/help.php?

Hi Whiterider. Well, I've got 2 successful majors now. The tutorials that you two wrote differ somewhat in the arrangements of steps. NataSqui leaves out the BCons, but that isn't the difference that broke the majors. Natasqui has Fix Integrity. Yours does not. You may want to look at her tutorial and see what the differences are. http://modthesims2.com/showthread.php?t=170398

Anyway, this is the line that I think makes a difference in my game: Paste those numbers in the boxes that say Orig. GUID and Fallback GUID so that they replace the old ones. And to make extra sure we aren’t replacing our cloned major, click ----------- “Fix Integrity”. Commit and Save!

I am using Simpe 6.0b and I have all EP's (Seasons too) ans FFS and Glamour. I was testing these using Numenor's Legacy system in Pets mode.

Nysha
14th Mar 2007, 10:20 PM
Hmm, OK. I've never used Fix Integrity and never had problems myself, however, as this clearly does have an affect in some cases I shall add it presently :)
Thanks for the heads up!

Hey Whiterider/Porkypine I was just wondering how you're supposed to fix the integrity? I got halfway through Whiterider's tutorial then decided to read these messages.
"Paste those numbers in the boxes that say Orig. GUID and Fallback GUID so that they replace the old ones. And to make extra sure we aren’t replacing our cloned major, click ----------- “Fix Integrity”. Commit and Save!"
I might just be overlooking it, but I'm pretty new to all of this so I'm not familiar with these things.
Thanks,

On my version of SimPE, Fix Integrity is a selection on the menu bar at the top.

Or, select Tools | Object Tools | Fix Integrity

yea i, trying to figure out how to make it so that a teen carear that i created (yeas i know that this is a major tutorial but you seem like a person who knows what there talking about) can have a male and female job descriptions like on the adult careers. Is that possibe. also to confuse my self more i have added 2 levels onto the carear path i get them to work, but the chance cards don't even show up even when i try and force them from that cheat box thing. HELP PLEASE!

:D wow great job :D i'm just sad  becuase you can't make it so you grow into a cusom career. if anybody found out away (superfly, nemerour etc.) could they tell because i'd like to have a big game where theres a custom major which then leads into a knight career (u know what i'm saying?). can somebody please :help:

Nysha
25th Mar 2007, 2:29 PM
Unfortunately no, we don't know how to do that yet. But as long as you cloned the Knight career from a career which doesn't require any particular... it's linked in the career! Bloody NREFs!!!

EDIT: Apologies, I 'Eureka!'d while posting there :P
We don't know how to do that, but as long as a knight career were cloned from a career which doesn't require another major, then you could have your Knightly educated sims become Knights easily.

Great job on the tutorial! :) I followed it and mine seemed to work. I just had one problem. When I clicked on the major the place where the ideal careers are was blank. It just said 'Ideal Careers' and then there is a blank space. I went back and followed your tutorial and I'm sure I did everything right. I was wondering if you had any idea what could have gone wrong.

Cool tutorial. I have a question how do the careers link to majors? I didn't see that. For my game I want Physics to help with the Military Career. Is that something in the career and not the major?

Nysha
19th Jun 2007, 5:36 PM
As you'll see above, Sorwen, that bit of the system isn't yet understood. The only method we currently have of linking majors and careers is to clone from a major which links to the career we want it to. The only way to do what you want to, would be to clone a Miltary-related major and change everything to reflect the Physics major.

Is it possible to adjust the skill #'s so that you really focus in one area, for example, reaching logic level 7 or cooking level 8 and having ohter skills be more minor, or will this screw up everything?

Nysha
18th Aug 2007, 4:49 AM
Unfortunately, that will screw the skill boundaries up so your sim can only get a C as the maximum grade.

Try selecting the file and using the "Export" button in the top right of the plugin window instead.

Well, I have a probelm with the icon to!
I exported it, changed it, and used the bright Pink backgroun for transparency, then hit replace, and all that happens is the DNA icon most of it turns pink, and you can see where half of my icon is, between the DNA lines! What am I doing wrong and how can I fix this?

Nysha
20th Nov 2007, 5:17 PM
Well, first off, your graphics program probably doesn't use lurid pink for transparency - you'll need to find that out yourself. As for the other bit of icon, you probably drew yours on a new layer, and need to delete the layer with the DNA strands on it.

I just erased the DNA strand one, and drew my own. And thats how it turns out but in game all I see is the Default DNA strands, how do I replace the default in SimPE so I can start over on the icon?

I feel really silly (and this has probably been asked), but is the major supposed to override the base major you cloned from if you're not using the Majors Made Easier hack?

I just want to know if I messed up somehow...

No, it isn't. If it overwrites, then you didn't do the first section right - assigning a custom GUID. :)

Also, in addition to this tutorial, I've just posted Mini-Tutorial: Making Custom Icons which Do Not Hurt One's Eyes (http://www.modthesims2.com/showthread.php?t=269957), which has great relevance :P .

Thank you so much for this tutorial. It made the process seem so easy, even for a layman like me.

I have run into an issue though. I went back and edited the major I made because the class descriptions were spilling over into the class times, and the icon turned out to be fugly in-game. The thing is, the changes appearing in-game at all. I've deleted the .bak file, the package file, then replaced it, but nothing doing. Is there something I missed?

Oh, and I've guesstimated the character limit for the class descriptions to be around 88 characters, with spaces. That sound right to everyone?

Amazing tutorial! I've already made five majors in three days this way. They work perfectly in game. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Edit: They don't work that perfectly. My majors have long hours and my sims learn too much from every class. Their motives drop a lot too, is there a way to change that?
I was thinking, in SimPe there's a BCON called "Grading - Time Chunk" does that affect how much my sims learn every class? and if it does so, do you know how does it work?
And there are BCONs for every motive, "Motive Delta - name of motive" do you know how this ones change the way the motives change? (I'm assuming this are the ones who affect the change in the motives)

If you or anyone else knows, please answer. Thanks

I'm not sure on the Motive Delta. It might have to do with mood and how it affects the grading, but that's just a wild guess. As for the Time Chunk, I haven't the slightest as to what that one does. If you want to change how long classes are, that's in "Tuning-Hours per day." Hope it helps.

3rd Mar 2008, 7:10 PM
I shortened the hours and nothing really changed much, then, I realized they were in Fall, which means they learn faster. That may explain it, because when the season changed, they started to learn the same they have learnt everytime since I have Uni, so I guess that was the "problem", not my major being faulty. And I decided not to mess with the other files, since I don't know what they do.

I did my first major and I am having trouble with it. I can only get the class performance meter to expand so far. My sims have the required skills for the semester, but it won't expand any further. Does anyone know how to fix this. I do know that the major I cloned needs 3 skill points for the first semester and mine only needs 2. Could this be the conflict? If so is there a way to change it or do I just need to add another skill level? I am thinking it has something to do with the BCON Grading - Skill Gates, but I'm not positive. I tried messing with them once and it caused my game to crash. An explanation of what those are for would be helpful. Thanks in advance.

Motive Deltas are the effect that being in class has on your sims. I believe the number is per hour of class. For example a Motive Deltas - Hunger of -150 would decrease the sims hunger by 300 for a 2 hour class. There is a different one for each motive and each is divided out by semester. Negetive numbers decrease the motive and positive numbers increase the motive, so if you have a class that is a lot of fun, you would want to use a positive number for that semester under fun. Hope that helps.

As for the grading time chunk, I'm not positive, but I think it is how much your sim learns per hour of class. If your performance meter is filling up fast from going to longer hour classes you could try lowering the number either that or make the class length shorter by editing the Tuning - Hours Per Day. This is just a guess on the Grading - Time Chunk though, because I haven't played around with it yet.

Nysha

You're asolutely right about Motive Deltas, Charisa. And the same with Hours per Day - I'm not sure what the Time Chunk does.

Regarding your issues with skills, yes, you need to have the correct number of skill increases for each class - see the table in the tutorial. :)

I'm pretty sure someone can help me so if you can I'd really appreciate it. Ok so the first part where you work with object workshop goes fine, it's just after that because after I save the file the tutorial says that it will show object data view but nothing happens so I click on it in the resource tree and wait like 10 minutes and still nothing happens. I don't know if something is wrong with my simPE or if I have to get an update or something because I have the expansion packs university, pets, seasons, celebration stuff, and nightlife. So if anyone can help I'd really appreciate it. :turtle: Also, my turtle would really appreciate it too if someone can help.

Snake022, SimPE is very resource-hoggy. If your computer is old/slow, or you have a lot of background processes (such as anti-virus or IM programs) running, it can take bloody forever to load. Try closing some background tasks, and if it still doesn't work, I suggest you reinstall SimPE.

Rferniexyz, are you selecting the Object Data file in the right hand pane as well as the left hand?

This tutorial is great, but I'm stuck in a relatively early point inthe process. This may not be the area to ask but I cant find the answer anywhere else. I have done everytjhing up to the catalog desription (including custom GUID) but no matter how many times I click the resource thingy (Whatever it is... the CTSS) I do not get the line of text. I have all windows enabled in SimPE and I have checked each one but none of them have it. I think my problem may be with the resource list, it won't show up no matter how many times I try to open and close it. Any help would be appreciated.

So that's the planning done - now to implement it!

Get back to Behaviour Constant: Class Req - Cleaning Max. Now look at your table, and find each entry for Cleaning. My example table only has Cleaning once - 0x03, at level 1. Select the corresponding line, and type the correct value into the box where you put your 0s earlier. Remember that the values are multiplied by one hundred, so a skill at level 1 needs 100 in that box, level 2 needs 200 etc. Fill in all the values and commit. Now do the same for Behaviour Constant: Skill Req - Cleaning Min.

Go through and do the same for all the Skill Requirement BCONs, and Save.

Have a look through the other BCON files - you can change class times and lengths, the number of GPA points lost if your sim misses a final exam, the impact of your classes on a sim's mood, and zillions of other interesting things. Have a play around and see what you can come up with.

I just created a new Major using this tutorial (have used this tutorial many times before to create custom majors), but this time my BAK files are missing! I created another one to be sure, and when I go to the folder where I usually save all my majors my two new ones only had PACKAGE files, but no BAK files! :( All my old majors that I had created previously were still there and had both BAK and PACKAGE files. What do I do? Is the BAK file essential to the major showing up in the game?

Something's wrong with SimPE too now. Whenever I load it up I just get a blank white screen, no resource tree or any other windows automatically popping up when I load Object Workshop. I think something went wrong because the last time I finished making something I closed each of those little window boxes before closing SimPE. How do I get them back? I've accidentally done this in the past and was never able to get those windows to come back unless I completely reinstalled SimPE.

Nysha

Talanta, firstly the BAK file is a backup file - you can delete it once you're done.
Secondly, if you look on my first screenshot, d'you see the 7th icon along (last one in the first block)? That's the Reset UI button. :) Find it on your layout, or in the menus, and hit it - should get your windows back.

JC<3ME, is there a Misc section, or somesuch? I don't have access to my main rig right now, so I can't test, but I believe one of the EPs moved the Majors.

Well, firstly SnowySwan77, if you want to make careers, why are you following a tutorial for creating majors?

Secondly, it sounds like something went wrong with your SimPE installation - I suggest you go to the SimPE site for help.

Awesome tutorial! Thank you very much for sharing such interesting knowledge. I think I made something cool out of it, too! :)

Edit : I've realized that the "Focused Skills" remain the same as for the cloned major, despite diffences in the skill building along the major. My custom major focused on the same Skills than Literature, but I didn't realize it, and cloned History instead. Well, "Body" is one of my focused skills and gets up to 4 along the major, but it never showed up in the list of Focused skills, it kept "Charisma, Creativity, Mechanical, Logic" from the History major. So I have to redo this all over again, cloning the Literature major, lol.

Question : This tutorial has been posted a few years ago, in the meantime did anyone find out how to 1) change the learning-points icon 2) link a custom major to a career, because even the Maxis careers linked to History (the one from which I cloned) didn't show up in my Custom major "Ideal careers" panel.

Thanks :)

Nysha
26th Jun 2010, 10:20 PM
JodiFreak, that's usually caused by broken skills - TS2 is very fussy about how many skill requirements you can have for each semester; that's why I included the table.

van Dorn, you haven't hit the Default Lang Only button. If you look at all the language strings other than US English, they all still contain the original EA titles.

Uh-oh, I think I'm in trouble...

I didn't thank you for the tutorial in my recent submission of the IlluminiSim major I created, so here it is now - a maxis-big ta-heaps thankyou to let everyone know how much I appreciated the tutorial.

As an aside, I too am looking to make a deeper cut in the game rather than a bunch of little scratches on the surface: an idea where I would start looking in regards to manipulating the 'College - Research...' icon/term paper icon/assignments icon so it displays my custom major, and not the cloned major? I thought if I gave the whole package a specific group assignment (achieved by initially typing the name of the major into the NREF window of the same file and using the group id generated automatically for the rest of the file) it might have worked, but all that did was cause the game to crash out on me - luckily I had saved the 'pre-breaking-the-game' package separately... I'll keep trying, but as I'm still relatively new to this programming/hacking/modding thing, it might take me a really long time.

Once again; cheers, big-ears! :D

You're very welcome, Abrahadarba. I looked into changing those icons a long time ago, but I never got anywhere I'm afraid. I also poked around in the NREFs trying to manipulate linked careers, but with a similar lack of success.

This worked great, I haven't read through the other replies, but in case you didn't know, there's a file in the BCONs, Tuning - Start Hour, that lets you choose when classes start, "Tuning - Hours per Day" allows you to change hours that classes take up, and other BCONs seem to control basically everything about the classes for those wanting to get into detail with the points things are worth.

Thanks so much for this lovely tutorial. It was so simple even I could follow it! XD
I did have one tiny issue but my first major still works - it just gives an error message when I select 'yes' that I want my sim to change to it. The error doesn't prevent them from switching to the new major, but I'm not sure why it does it all the same. It says: "missing neighbor for data access," claiming the error is with the sim (it said her name anyway.) I checked by switching to a couple different majors and it's definitely the custom one I made and not any others. Any thoughts?
If not, no worries. You've definitely done more than enough! :)

What do I do differently? Do I just "forget" the GUID part, or do I uncheck some boxes at the cloning? Please help. :)

What exactly is it that you want to do? If you want to replace an EA major with a totally different custom one, then yeah, just skip the GUID step. If you just want to, say, modify some of the titles for an EA major but keep the rest the same, it might be better to just override individual resources, so that your override is less likely to conflict with others. If that's what you want to do, I'll explain how. :)

Yes, I'd like unique titles, descriptions and class titles for all of them, as well as different skill sets. And different career linkings as well. In this threas I read it's not figured out how to do that yet, but since then Phaenoh did it, right? here: http://modthesims.info/download.php?t=460959

Yeah, since I wrote this tutorial, Phae has worked out that the links between careers and majors are saved in the career's files, not the major's files. So we know how to do it now, and we also know that it has nothing to do with making custom majors :D .

GoldAnnie
9th May 2014, 3:46 PM
Okay, I made 3 overrides so far. Did everything the way you described in the tutorial. Left out the GUID part completely. Left out the custom icon too, since I won't be needing that.
I'm only using one right now. It crashes my game at the loading screen.
I took my file and deleted some things from it that I didn't change. (eg: skill gates or grading-class files) Now I can see at the major choosing panel that the major title and the description differs. Cool! But once my sim chooses this major and I click OK my game crashes.
So I took my file and deleted every part I didnt change. ( Image, Function-Main, Function-Init, Tuning-General, semi-global file, and so on). Now only the skill changes and description changes remain + the object data. It's crashing the game once again at the loading screen.
I also tried deleting the object data as well, with this there are no crashes but the mod does not work at all.
Any idea what I should do? It's probably quite stupid what I tried but I had no better guess.
I also thought that maybe I shouldn't tick everything while I'm cloning the file? (I have no idea what those boxes do. )
