View Full Version : CAST King or Queen Winner is Announced!

31st Aug 2009, 10:25 PM

I thought it would be fitting to have the first Sims 3 contest here be about the new feature of TS3. The Create-A-Style Tool.
I'm not going to give themes or such. I want you to be able to go to town, so to speak.
I don't want to stifle anyone's creativity with 'You Must Use Purple' or things like that. NOT to mention there isn't much in the way of CC objects yet. Look at the picture above.
The first room on the left is bland and boring. NO color really, and no patterns.
The middle picture is more stylized but not quite there.
The last picture is more indicative of what this contest is about. It is merely a guideline though.

The contest will run for 4 weeks and have four rounds.
Each round you will furnish 2 rooms and decorate them. You can use ANYTHING you want in your pictures. Anything.
The judges and I want to see the CAST tool used prominently.
You will be judged on these criteria:

Color and pattern use.
Flow of the room and object placement.
Pleasing decorations.
Overall style.

Each round you will be required to submit 6 pictures. 3 for each room.
Use angles that really show it off, but try not to have the camera too high over the room.
We want to feel as if we are in it.
One picture of the room must be at night.
If the house you are using has an open floor plan try to only take pictures of the given room for the round.
The only photoshopping allowed is to add a frame to your picture.
Since we have so many new faces, and if you are going to be a contestant, please read the Forum Contest Rules (http://www.modthesims.info/showthread.php?t=341258).
I have no patience for people that don't.

My tutorial (http://www.modthesims.info/showthread.php?t=337362) has great tips and hints for professional picture taking. It was mostly written for sims but there are plenty of great pointers in it.
I HIGHLY recommend using this (http://www.modthesims.info/download.php?t=345987) camera hack. It gives you greater range and control. Just make sure to back up the file you are replacing.

Deluxe Designs (http://www.modthesims.info/member.php?u=1172929)
Titanslayer (http://www.modthesims.info/member.php?u=1947403)
dundoniandood (http://www.modthesims.info/member.php?u=3004927)
Panique (http://www.modthesims.info/member.php?u=3000400) Emergency Judge

The winner gets to claim they are not ONLY CAST King or Queen but also the first winner of a Sims 3 contest at this forum. The winner will also receive an animated gif avatar made with pictures of their choosing.

Application Round ~ Study/Office/Den & Living Room

Three pictures of a living room, one of them night.
Three pics of a study or office or den type room, one of them night.
Please label the Night pic. You can give us a description of your rooms. It adds some flare.

In this round submitting your pictures GUARANTEES you will advance to the next round unless, for some crazy reason, we have a buttload of entries. Then we may have to whittle it down.
You have until Monday, Sept 7, 7PM GMT -5 to submit your entries. You WILL be given a score for this round to add with your other scores.
So just because you are going through automatically, doesn't mean this round doesn't count.

Now bring it on and knock us out!

Not if you get your application posted before you leave. The applications close on Sept 6. Guess I should change my post a little.

No, three pictures of a living room, one of them night.
Three pics of a study or office or den type room, one of them night.

I makes sense in my head when I'm typing this out. Sorry to confuse you. :P

1st Sep 2009, 6:08 AM
Okay, I'd like to do this. :D .

1st Sep 2009, 6:12 AM
I had a feeling that builders would be into this!
Post when you're ready Ri. :)

1st Sep 2009, 6:23 AM
I'd like to try this . So I just post my 3 pics of living room and 3 pics of den here before Sept 6, 7PM ?
Also as the rounds go on, do you continue to use the same house or are you judging the rooms. In other words , do I have to stick to a certain theme or house or can I vary it ?

You can use any theme, any house, for any round. In fact, you can use a different theme and house for your den and living room. It's all up to you and what you think looks good. Be creative.

And yes, all you need to do is post your 6 pictures to be entered.

1st Sep 2009, 12:21 PM
I was thinking of trying to join here, but after i saw the pictures, and you say the last one was the best, but i think they all look good, the 1st one is a little bit of minimalist and modern, which is my style, and which i prefer from the 3 pictures, maybe there should be a category or something...

1st Sep 2009, 6:19 PM
I'll join. This sounds fun. :)

I'm not saying they don't all look good, but this contest is for the CAST tool, and having a plain green bedspread and white walls and floors doesn't really show off what the CAST tool can do. It's not only about the objects, but how you design your objects with the tool.

If you think this contest isn't for you, that's ok. You can wait and see what pictures other people post and if you think you can kick their butt, join the fray!

EDIT: And as for the picture at the top, it's just an example and not a hard and fast guideline. If anything the bathroom pic is an over exaggeration to show my point.

1st Sep 2009, 10:03 PM
I'll be a judge if there is a place available!

Wonderful! Thank you.
And with that, the judging positions are filled.

Now where are the entries? :turtle:

2nd Sep 2009, 2:37 AM
Well... Here's My Classicly Themed Study. Tried to Incorporate a very casual feel to it, without it being to "Living Room". I have a few skill objects in place, while still having it in theme with the century. Wish we could texture the ceiling

Screeny 1,General Sitting, Night shot. Though it looks like it looks a little bit past night, it is. It's mainly for reading, and socializing.

Screeny 2, Painting and seating (for painting). Well this explains it self. Plain old sitting area, once again for books. And if sims are feel the need, they can paint the scene.

Screeny 3, General Shot of the room and A view into the office. Shows the basic layout of the room. Office is very simple. Desk has Clutter to fit the theme (no computer). NOt much to say.

For my Living Room, I decided to go a little crazy, but only a little. I gave it a water theme, Since the game used water themes so well. The columns seem out of place, but they give it a unique feel :) I also had a hard time trying to design the walls for the room, making them unique, and pretty at the same time, playing with the blue, blue green and green and blue palletes. i like it. without further ado...

Screeny 1, Overveiw. Plain and simple, just shows the layout of everything. like before. Not much to talk about.

Screeny 2, Bar. yeah, I wanted to keep it simple over here. I chose the vases because it had what appeared to look like coral so I said, why not. gave it a color to off-set the green and there it was. And I used the tiled divider because a plain dull color looked good in my opinion, but the time gave me the look I originally wanted, and its transparant tile, so yeah.

Screeny 3, Sitting area. Simple enough. NOt much to say. I like the curtains. A room like this shouldn't have to many image patterns, because them i'd look ugly. But those lamps are just perfect! Give a vibrant feel to the room :)

well, thats the rooms :)

2nd Sep 2009, 2:55 AM
The competition is off to a fantastic start!

Your entry is wonderful! I'm so glad people get what I was trying to explain.

matrix54, yes, that is fine. You can also change shots if you want. They will not be judged til Sunday. Which one is your Night shot?

BTW: Picture rules are different for the Contest forum. There is no in-line picture or size limit. The forum will automatically resize it.

2nd Sep 2009, 3:28 AM
Thank you :)And they were all taken between 10 and 5:30. morning doesn't start until 6:00, so I it in just in time :p But If anyone deems this as unfair, I can retake the shot at night. I wonder what the second One will be? something crazy, I HOPE!

2nd Sep 2009, 3:45 AM
They need to very obvious either night or day. Yours are not. One helpful suggestion I would make is moving your Draw settings up. Found under Options. That way we can see out the window a little better. This is good if the view out of the windows is pretty.

Two pictures between 7am and 7pm, and one picture between 7pm and 6am.

Here's my mix modern and wood design for the living room.

Oh my... So utterly tempting...

Awesome job so far everyone!

Man, I want to enter!

I always make the contests that I want to participate in. But then I can't...it's a double edged sword. :(

2nd Sep 2009, 10:59 PM
Your welcome! I haven't really played with the patterns and stuff yet, because it just seems so overwhelming! I definitely went out of my comfort zone lol...I tend to keep things simple. So this is certainly going to be challange! TRIriana you really should join!

3rd Sep 2009, 12:31 AM
you are so right. I tend to do more modern homes because overdoing things, IMO isn't really stylish, but this contest is nice. I like to stick to basic colors, wood, plastics and metals, and throw in a pattern every now and again. Its fun using my modern skill and stylizing to go outsid my confort zone, as done with my classic study. I wish us all luck, and i hope I win. I'd be nice to win

3rd Sep 2009, 10:59 AM
Was going to leave this until after uni tomorrow. But Im not feeling sleepy, so I got cracking - really not my best work though :\ Funny how things always look better in your head, isn't it? :p

Basically, my plan was to work with a modern design, and use the CAST to create an eclectic look which I so love. Unfortunately, my rooms were alittle too small to look good "from a sims point of view", and the sheer amount of windows takes away from the eclectic look. Oh well, I shall do better for the next round.

Onto the first screen:

Living Room

Basically my color scheme was black and white. I used slightly different shades of the granite floor, which you cant really see in the picture, and then all my patterns were made black and white using the CAST. I used alot of black laquered wood - Japanese style :D And I also liked the look of the chrome finish. I used it on my laps and also on my couches. I added some texture with the stones (which took forever to CAST. I stole the colors from another a few stone textures), and added in two shag rugs.

Okay, so my idea here revolved around the concept of suspended garden beds. They looked great in my head... not so easy to translate into The Sims. So as 1 of my 3 pics, I included a side-on view; so you can see wtf is going on.
Decore wise, I kept with the eclectic theme, with black woods, chrome and a luxurious wallpaper.

3rd Sep 2009, 6:16 PM
Great entry, scoopy loopy! I love sunken living rooms. *makes note to make one*

We are coming along great guys, since we have the applications open until Sunday I think we will get a great turn out.

The next round is going to be the hardest.....but maybe the prettiest to look at.

3rd Sep 2009, 6:29 PM
wow.... This is REALLY HARD , they are all so cool....., much better than anything I could do!

4th Sep 2009, 12:47 AM
Are we doing gardens next week?
Hardest: No real Garden Furniture
Prettiest: Its a Garden

hmm... not too hard...

4th Sep 2009, 1:38 AM
Hm, it would be interesting to do a garden, we'd have to pack alot in because we cant CAST plants or fences :p

I get the feeling one of the rooms is going to be a bathroom.

4th Sep 2009, 3:35 AM
I really hate that we can't CAST plants, fences, stairs and chimneys. Suck it EA!

As for what's coming...you'll just have to wait. :giggler:

I was really hoping for a few more entries today. Maybe all you students are waiting for the weekend to do them. *crosses fingers*

Desciptions coming soon with pics
Night shot is the last one:

This part of the study is for sims that enjoy art as well as chess. The expensive painting sits over an antique chessboard that has been passed down through generations. This picture shows off the victorian wallpaper design.

This picture was actually meant to be bigger, but then it looked tacky. There is actually an easel by the chess table.

This part features the main fireplace that has comfortable chairs to sit in while you read or study a book. On the mantle there is an antique candle lamp with a plant and a mood-lite candle. On the coffee table rests some newspapers and a flower.

This night-time shot shows off the desk area. You can see a great view of the stars through the window that looks out beyond the house behind the desk. It is a perfect writer's workstation with a computer, antique candle-lamp, pens and a notepad, and of course what any nocturnal sim needs; coffee.

Living Room:

The first photo show the fireplace in the living room. On the table you can see a fish tank that you can put a fish that your little boy caught, a cordless phone, bills that need to be payed, and a baseball. The tile near the fire keeps the carpet and furniture from catching on fire.

This next photo shows the entertainment section. Here you can either watch the T.V., play one the Simstation 2, and listen to the large stack of CD's by the player. Perfect for any sim young or old.

In the last photo you can see the comfort areas. The doubleseat closest to the table is facing the T.V., where the other sofa is there for any sim who would like to relax or take a nap. This photo also shows some of the beautiful artwork that is in this room. The huge window lets in lots of light during the daytime, but gives a beautiful view of the stars.

Thanks for making this contest! I;m not so much as a builder as I am a decorator so I hope you like my shots!

Night shot is the last one:

I'm so happy you are joining LucyCat! Can't wait to see your entry. :)

4th Sep 2009, 5:40 AM
I've been flirting with joining this contest, but my hang up is the separate living room and study thing. I very rarely design separate studies/dens/libraries. Sigh. Also TS3 crashes on me when I'm in CAST for more than half an hour or so. Inevitably that is right when I'm finishing a room. It comes down to whether I can handle the frustration.

Do you know if there will be an equivalent to stars for contest winners on MTS?

4th Sep 2009, 5:44 AM

Jane, you do have several days to take your pics. Don't over think it. You're in, if you post your pics. So sorry about the crashing thing. :|

If there are stars I want to be starred retroactively. I've won several contests here and hosted. They never gave me more than one star though.....

I WILL try to get this done, I swear, but I've got so much stuff to do this week....

Anyways, great shots everybody! :D .

I must say guys, these are very nice entries!!

4th Sep 2009, 10:46 PM
All right lemoncandy, I'm happy to see you here! Nice patterns. I added you to the list.

4th Sep 2009, 10:49 PM
Yep, what a beginning. There are already so many great entries I’m quite ashamed to post too. Thanks for the idea and the hosting, I love decorating so it’s a MUST DO to me. This contest is gonna be so much fun! :bunny:

All right, so, this is my application:

The basis decorating theme is how I like it, modern, cluttered to try to have a reality feeling into this (although I still really do need moar clutter) but like the others I went outside my comfort zone by using (trying at least) CAS tools and playing with colors and patterns far more than usual.

The living-room is simple and elegant, not too messy since it’s also the place where guests are received. The green theme is throughout the room to provide a relaxing spirit. The natural theme is also conveyed by the paintings and patterns.

Here is the living-room main area (night):
http://img413.imageshack.us/img413/8899/living1.jpg (http://img413.imageshack.us/i/living1.jpg/)

Another view of it featuring the center of the room, the fireplaces, who add a warm feeling to the room (day1):

http://img98.imageshack.us/img98/2605/living2.jpg (http://img98.imageshack.us/i/living2.jpg/)

Finally, the back part of the room (day2):
http://img98.imageshack.us/img98/7943/living3.jpg (http://img98.imageshack.us/i/living3.jpg/)

The study is meant to be warm and playful, with warm tones of course ;). I tried to let you see everything but 3 shots is not enough for the small details. So I’ll tell you instead. Here’s a night shot of the painting corner. There are also comfy couches for your sim to read books from the bookcase or pose for the painter (night):

http://img442.imageshack.us/img442/553/office1.jpg (http://img442.imageshack.us/i/office1.jpg/)

Then, a shot of the relax area of the study with a bed used as a couch where they can lie down when work is getting too hard and they need a break. At the left, a useable coffee machine allows them to take a coffee break (I tried to add cushions on the bed but found no way of doing it, sorry) - (day1):

http://img136.imageshack.us/img136/4604/office2.jpg (http://img136.imageshack.us/i/office2.jpg/)

Finally, the desk area, viewed from the couch (day2):

Gee, I thought I replied.....*confused*

Anyway, thanks for jumping right in there lanawinst! Added you to the list too. *yay*

5th Sep 2009, 1:43 AM
thanks :)

I do have a question, are we going to be closed if we don't have 10 contestants as stipulated on the rules?

5th Sep 2009, 1:52 AM
thanks :)

I think we will get at least three contestants in the next two days. If not I will extend the Application deadline until we do. ;)

As you enter the Study from the stairs you will notice a chess table on your left and as you round the corner their is a door to a bathroom and a bookshelf on your right. Day

Along the next wall is a large bookshelf where one can also display small objects of interest. Also in the picture is the second desk. What I was not able to show you was the Easel which was opposite of the couch. Day

LEsherick, thanks so much for entering!

I would like to ask why your pictures are so dark? Are you using the PrtScn key and cropping them? Please take a look at my tutorial to correct that stupid problem. *shakes fist at EA*

5th Sep 2009, 5:07 AM
I did try to lighten the pictures. I guess I will have to work on the pictures some more.

5th Sep 2009, 11:34 AM
@ LEsherick, take at a look at the tutorial of Sisaly, it's really useful. A quick tip, while taking pictures, play in window mode, to avoid the very dark picture.

Living Room

The living room is aimed at suiting the type of people who prefer to entertain in a relaxed, spacious and relatively sparse environment. The decor is aimed at matching the walls, which as Picture A shows at mostly wood-pannelled. The green and white wallpaper was added later, to match the overall theme. There are two main focal points of the room: the fireplace, which serves to create a warm ambiance at night and the television/bar area Picture C, which is situated to the front of the living room.

There are four large arched windows within the living, and all open onto a garden to allow the scented fragrances of flowers into the main room Picture B.

The Den area is part of the same house, and the feel of this room is quite a contrast to the living room. As Picture A shows, this particular room is split into two and a balcony area reaches out onto the lower level. The lower level is aimed more toward lounging around and gaming Picture C, and would be suited toward the younger generation. The upper level is the reading room Picture B and, although small, provides a quiet space where a person can chill on their own over coffee. The walls are pannelled, and this time the white is partnered with shades of blue to give a more formal air to the room.

YAY!!! TRIriana is in the house. Great entry, and now we just need one more contestant, but 10 more would be even better!

5th Sep 2009, 11:45 AM
In the end, resistance was futile. ;).

5th Sep 2009, 2:56 PM

According to a study by the University of British Columbia, different colors are better suited to different tasks (article at NPR (http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=100301582) ). Students taking tests scored better in logic and math when the test book was red, and better in english comprehension and analogies when the test book was blue. This kid friendly study is designed with that research in mind.

The wall to the right of the entrance is lined with bookcases, interrupted only by a computing station. The rig is top of the line, which won't matter much if the occupants are word processing, but it is sure to please gamers.

The reading nook towards the back of the room feels airy and light, while the study table is divided off to minimize distractions at homework time. The study is completed by a aquarium display just to the left of the entrance.

Living Room:

This large living room is both an area for entertainment and for entertaining. When guests enter they are greeted by an open conversation space, seating, and a bar (not pictured).

The center piece of this room also serves as a divider between the open entry way and the more formal entertainment center. The current oppucants are using the display case to showcase their gem collection.

There is seating for up to eight in front of the television, and there is more than enough room for dancing, making this an excellent location for parties or movie night.

Sorry for the double post, but I also have a question. Is there any reason why all the pictures can't be at night? Because its so much easier if I don't have to fast forward to take half the pictures.

5th Sep 2009, 3:46 PM

Uhm, since i don't have much experience with the caST-Tool and need some practice i'll enter this contest - I could really learn something. So please, count me in. I will start my Game right now, so you'll get my application tonight.

I hope this is okay for you, and excuse my bad use of the english language, i could need practice in that too^^

5th Sep 2009, 4:24 PM
I updated my pictures. Note that the Study/Den is supposed to be a somewhat dark place. But all the pictures are lightened up and I did read the tutorial and used those tips.

5th Sep 2009, 8:37 PM
Hi, I have been 'umming' and 'ahhing' as to whether to do this or not. I tend to do modern houses that aren't to dark or dingy so a lot of the time my walls are quite bright. With this house it's got a hint of retro to some bits of it and i stuck with natural colours with injections of colour here and there. I used the CAST quite alot, might not seem it as it's quite minimalistic...Anyway enough jabbering here are my pictures:

This is obviously the living room, with the main part of it sunken, I tend to have this in most of my houses for some reason. I think it makes the room more interesting.

This is the living room at NIGHT, as it's a place for relaxing I don't like it to be too bright at night!

And this is the study area, it's quite small so was hard to get good angles for pictures!

This is the study at NIGHT, with a warm fireplace to sit by in peace and read a book at the end of the day.

Jane, so glad you decided to enter. Can't wait to see the rest! As for the night time pic, I'm sorry for that, but it is one of the rules. It shows us judges how your lighting is. TS2 had a cheat for setting the time, is that still in TS3?

We would be glad to have you Pai! Yes, there is always something to learn with this game and about design. That's one of the reasons I'm hosting this contest.
No worries about the english!

They are much improved LEsherick! Thanks for doing that. It is a pain in the but that the lighting is on one hand, beautiful, and on the other, hideous. WE must do the best we can with what EA gave us.

Sam, welcome to the figh....I mean contest. LOL
You did wonderfully with a minimalist style while incorporating pattern and color!

OMG! Can't wait....this is going to be so much fun... :bunny:

I'm not sure I phrased the question clearly enough: I have no problem with taking my pictures at night... But can I take them ALL at night?

The game just isn't friendly for picture taking... If I could use camera-man mode in build/buy that would be fine, but I CAN'T. It just makes everything more complicated if I have to put the game on fast forward for a full day just because I want to retake one shot.

Jane, I get what your saying. But everyone else has to have TWO day pics and one night pic. It would be unfair if I changed it now.

Fastfoward sucks for me too. Would it be easier if you did your rooms and then save a game for the daytime and save another for night? That way all you have to do is go into your day or night game to take pictures...though honestly, the time it takes to do that you could just FF.

I'm not trying to make it really difficult, but it is a contest and they are the rules. So sorry. I really want you to continue on as I think you have a lot to offer to this contest.

How long does it take for you to FF from 7am to 7pm? :turtle:

6th Sep 2009, 4:57 AM
Sigh. Not that long, its more a matter of the fact that I'm building in the hood I'm playing. For some reason it didn't even occur to me that I could make a second save game. I must be having a slow moment. I guess I'll do that (stupid EA limiting cameraman mode... *whine* *complain* *stomp feet*)

What kind of penalty am I looking at if I don't retake the shots of the study?

It's a one point penalty PER room. And for the next round, if I were you I'd start a whole new game, that way you need not worry about your 'hood.

And yes, EA really screwed the pooch with many aspects of this game. *#@%&^(*%$ EA!!!*

To ALL contestants......PLEASE label all of your pics either day or night for the judges. It was stated in the OP..

Please label the Night pic.

Thank you! :luff:

Since I used a funky Gothic theme and hardly any windows in my living room it's as bit hard to tell day from night but if you look at the pictures marked "day" there's a sliver of daylight in them.;) It basically goes: Night/Day/Day, in both sets.

They are intended to be a bit dark since that's the mood I was going for.
But I also realize they have to be able to be seen clearly for judging.
They look great on my picture viewer but I know sometimes it's a different deal once online so let me know if they need to be lightened.

6th Sep 2009, 5:58 AM
babu, you have a PM!

6th Sep 2009, 7:14 AM
babu, you got it! YAY!!

Now for everyone to at the least put 'DAY' or 'Night' above each pic we will be good to go.

This is why no one is eliminated this round. Next round, you will all know the drill and have no problems. http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h200/sisaly/smilie3d_0374.gif

6th Sep 2009, 1:42 PM
Sorry, but am I too late? I'm always messing up the Timezones and i had much Problems with my Game the last night...

6th Sep 2009, 1:48 PM
No, you are NOT too late. You have 11 hours. If you need help, go here...

6th Sep 2009, 2:54 PM

This open, bright room is the living room of a former farm, which has now been modernized. However, since some old furniture was available, those Pieces were reused and thus created a mixture of old and new. The dominant colors here dusty rose, coral and white are interspersed with the chairs and stools in light blue, to pay tribute to the new modern time.

The office of the House seems to be a little dark, but the warm brown tones will bring comfort - even in an area in which most People only work. The colors are matching and the harmony is not broken by anything. This space is perfect for learning or reading a book, but also chess players and artists can feel at home here for hours - even if this room isn't that modern.

Okay, that's it... Thanks for the Link and as you see I had enough Time^^

6th Sep 2009, 11:21 PM
Great job Pai!

I'm debating about extending until tomorrow. One of my judges won't be able to get on until tomorrow afternoon. I hate to close the round and wait so long for scores.

OK, I just talked myself into EXTENDING applications until tomorrow Monday, 7pm GMT-5.

6th Sep 2009, 11:26 PM
Thanks so much!^^ But can I change the Study/Office Room until tomorrow Night? Because I got a new Idea and don't like my actual Room anymore *smiles a bit*

6th Sep 2009, 11:28 PM
Yes, Pai, you can change your pictures until I say 'Closed, judging in process'.

6th Sep 2009, 11:51 PM
Thanks^^ Sorry for the stupid Questions, it's just my first Contest and i'm really nervous and afraid to do something completely wrong or... Dunno unacceptable... And yay - i'm so excited... xD

7th Sep 2009, 4:59 PM
Thanks so much!^^ But can I change the Study/Office Room until tomorrow Night? Because I got a new Idea and don't like my actual Room anymore *smiles a bit*

Not meaning to stop you from changing pics, but NO ONE is getting eliminated this round, so you can just leave it till next round! :)

Was I meant to say this, I think sisaly posted a wee while back?

7th Sep 2009, 5:25 PM
I know that no one gets knocked out this Time, but if I'm not satisfied with my work, then I won't send it. I wanna do my best, even if it does not count. The images have changed the way already. And I'm much happier with them now^^

8th Sep 2009, 12:33 AM
pai.kea...your pictures DO count in this round! You are being scored.

I'm going to go ahead and close the Applications for judging.

I should have scores for you up very soon.

Then I will post what round 2 is.

8th Sep 2009, 2:59 AM
Ok, it might be a little while before I have my last judge post scores, so I'm going to go ahead and post Round 2 in about 20 minutes, since no one is leaving.

Also had a slight change of rounds. Since round 2 ends on Sunday, I'm NOT doing the hard round next. I want you to have plenty of time for that.

Stay tuned!

8th Sep 2009, 3:07 AM
I'm glad you've decided to go ahead and post the next round. Even if I had the chance of being eliminated this round I'd want the information. I like to think about what I'm going to do before I start, and the more time the better :)

8th Sep 2009, 3:38 AM
Round 2~K & D

For this round we are going to the busiest place in the house...the kitchen!
And what would a kitchen be without a place to eat?

You need to submit 3 pictures of a kitchen and 3 pictures of a dining room.
The kitchen and dining room should compliment each other.
One night picture for each room, labeled.

Please keep in mind the criteria that was laid out in the OP.

Entries are due by Sunday, Sept.13th, 4PM GMT -5.

Please check out this blog for great new objects.
Check out the right side for links to great sites and further down are labels for individual posts in her blog.
My Sims 3 Blog (http://mysims3blog.blogspot.com/)

Look forward to seeing what you all churn out!
Good luck!

8th Sep 2009, 4:03 AM
I'm gonna have some fun with this on, gonna try me a new theme :p Might do Space, but it not the point of the project. I do want to use matal though. maybe I'll do something old-fashioned or something to match the Classic theme from the study I did. or do another element, like the living room. Hope we get to do a yard and garden sometime soon. only rooms we have left now are the bed and bath (hint hint), so im hoping the exterior will show up :) hopefully, no hallways. :p

8th Sep 2009, 4:09 AM
Ha! I KNEW it would be the kitchen and a Dining Room - thanks so much! I've planned everything even the color scheme, so i'll start soon... I'm not gonna be the last this Time guys - hehe xD As you see i had a small Dining Place already included in the Living Area, we often have this in my Country, there's a small Breakfast Table and then a seperated Dining area for the more formal Events...

Matrix - what about the Nursery, a Teen Room or... There are still plenty of Things to do!

8th Sep 2009, 1:25 PM
a nursery... with what furniture:p

8th Sep 2009, 2:46 PM
Ehw, you're right! Sorry, i forgot, just for a moment, that this isn't a sims 2 contest. Please, excuse me.

8th Sep 2009, 3:56 PM
in my experiences, in RL patterns are more naturally found in the dining room.Wonder why that is? At least one person on MTS HAS to be a phsycologist (Spleling?)

8th Sep 2009, 7:42 PM
Just started the kitchen and dining room, but just wondered do the rooms have to be a completely different style to the one used previously? Do you want a completely fresh idea or can the style continue a bit?

8th Sep 2009, 8:08 PM
Sam, you do what ever you want. You can use any style, whether it's the same or not.

Now......for the SCORES!!! On a side note, one of my judges has......umm....communication issues and I didn't get feedback from them.

This is the only round I'm going to ask the judges for feedback.

Your scores are based on the following....

Color and pattern use=7
Object placement and flow of room=5
Pleasing decorations=5
Overall style=3

Total=20 x 3=60 for a perfect score

Here we go....

Judge1:I would like for the decorations to be more interesting.
Judge2:You’re themes were quite nice and refreshing, and overall you did a very nice job. However, I do have some nitpicky things that are worth mentioning for improvement. I’m aware of the fact that you tried to keep the study cozy and not living-roomish, and you did so quite nicely, but it still felt a little large to me. I feel maybe one seating area would be more than enough for a study. On your living room design, the aquatic theme was especially refreshing, yet it felt like a little too much monochromatic color. I understand the whole underwater theme, but perhaps some bursts of different color (or possibly different colored lighting) or even the subtraction of a pattern or two could have brought the room down to a more realistic level.

Judge1:Not enough color or decor, too cluttered, but nice and modern.
Judge2:The calming woods were very pretty to look at and those living room table lamps are to die for! I clearly see the modern influence in your designs, though I would have liked to see a bit more color. Also in your study, some of the decorations placed (as well as the bookcases that were strangely bleeding together) could have been arranged in a different manner. Though your work was nice and looked sophisticated, there was more room for playing around with the CAS tools.

Judge1:Brilliant object placement and color, nice rooms!
Judge2:I quite enjoyed your designs. The little splashes of green you used really accented your rooms well. Maybe some changes could include more filling up of the living room area? It seemed a bit empty compared to the concentrated seating area.

scoopy loopy
Judge1:Nice patterns weighed down by lack of color.Object placement was uninviting. Decorations were minimal and out of place.
Judge2:An eclectic look is always refreshing! The hanging gardens were a nice touch, and added a sense of coziness to your study. Perhaps if you added even more eclectic styling to your rooms, it would complete the picture. In addition, some item placements were off—the fireplace was up on a different level from the general seating and would be difficult to enjoy in the winter.

Lucy cat
Judge1:Really hard to judge as the shots were all close ups (sort of, u know what I mean)
Judge2:It was a shame you couldn’t take some of the pictures at a greater distance, for it was hard to get an idea of the room. You have good taste with how colors work, but sometimes the patterns in the room seem to be a bit conflicting (such as the curtains and couch in the last picture). Your object placement was also a bit awkward, since one of the couches was placed with its back to the other one and your chairs were facing the opposite direction from the fireplace.

lemon candy
Judge1:I really like the kicked back and warm feelings given off by the the colors and objects Nice simple Decor
Judge2:Your living room designs were effective in making several patterns work together seamlessly. My only advise would be to play with the woods a little more and create something truly unique. As for the study, the combination of different woods and patterns worked well. Perhaps you like to look into incorporating an additional color into the room palate.

Judge1:Bit more pattern needed
Judge2:The central fireplace unit was a great touch, and the stone worked well with the green and the light wood. Perhaps you could incorporate a little pop of color (in the cushions, the curtains, or the plants). As for the study, the brown couches went nicely with the choice of wallpaper, but the pink was a little too much. I do like how your wall paintings/posters matched the theme of the room, however.

Judge1:Needs to improve object placement, pattern use and color use
Judge2:You might want to improve the study by not making everything so matchy-matchy. Play with colors! Play with woods! Also, it seemed as if everything was on the outskirts of the room, which seemed a bit unrealistic. For the living room, the blue worked well with the wood, but it was a bit symmetrical and monotonous for my taste. Again, play with color. The second sitting area also seemed a bit awkward for me.

Judge1:A bit more pattern needed
Judge2:You really like bold! When I first saw that circle/stripe pattern in my game, I thought it was the ugliest pattern in the world. However, you managed to make it seem vivid and modern. However, the bar placed against the window was something I couldn’t understand since usually both sides need to be accessible. For the den, I enjoyed the balcony and wallpaper. To improve, you could add some color or reconsider those gray couches.

Judge2:That study is lovely! The wallpaper works really well with the wood. The metal bookcases, however, seemed a bit out of places and may have worked better if there were less of them. For the living room, a centerpiece divider was a great idea, but I felt as if all the beige was a bit bland. Still, you managed to incorporate different patterns into the sofas, which worked out quite well.

Judge1:More noticable decor please!
Judge2:The orange in your living room worked very nicely and accented the room well, but I felt there was room for more color. As for your study, the wallpaper and shaggy carpet was stellar, but I feel like a different wooden floor could have been used.

Judge 1:Needs to improve object placement
Judge 2:Your gothic style showed in your rooms and it was executed well. However, I believe a little less pattern would have been better. Since your walls featured a bold pattern, the curtains could have had a subtle pattern or no pattern at all. I must say though, the use of flowers on the carpet was genius.

Judge 1:Needs to lose some clutter
Judge 2:Though I was not crazy about the wallpaper choice for your living room, you worked it into the rest of the décor and added splashes of color that accented the room nicely. The layout of your study was also nice, but perhaps there was a little too much beige..?

8th Sep 2009, 8:21 PM
Ah yes, the kitchen/dining is always my favorite room :) I'll be looking forward to all the designs!

8th Sep 2009, 9:08 PM
I now remember why I rarely put a proper dining room in my houses. I hate them. No really I do. This will be a personal challenge haha.

8th Sep 2009, 9:50 PM
am I in third or second, i'm confused lol

8th Sep 2009, 10:56 PM
am I in third or second, i'm confused lol

Two people placed just ahead of you, so that would make you in third palce currently. :).

Thank you for the comments and scores, judges. ^^.

9th Sep 2009, 12:20 AM
Wow, very good comments, i would have said those same words if i were the judge my own work :D

Now for the next round :D

9th Sep 2009, 12:53 AM
You're lucky cause I have the hardest time judging my work... just can't

Thanks for the detailled comments that are really helping me knowing what was, is exactly expected.

9th Sep 2009, 2:35 AM
I suck so bad... last place :(

9th Sep 2009, 2:39 AM
First again, lol.
Well, this time, no theme, unless you want to call normal a theme. Nothing to block me in terms of limiting the creativity to a theme, so I said, i'll just design. Honestly, I have no words to really explain in concept where I was going with this. I kept is simple, so there... :p take note: I set the table.

(night shot)

This time, I have something to say. The kitchen needs to match the dining room, If I read correectly. so the colors may seem off, but I assure you, those counters are white. why it looks grey, I don't know. I wanted to do somewhat simple, very homey feel to the entire room, in terms of having items (clutter) placed through out, life if someone was cooking and the dishes stacked next to the sink add to that. Kitchens really are hard to do, and there isn't much to do to a kitchen, so this is my attemp. I hope it was successful :)

Yay, this is fun. Congratulations to everybody.

@lemoncandy: It's good to be nose to nose with someone who's work I like so much. I can tell you are raising the bar in this contest. Of course, I think we've already both won, since I saw my patterns in your room and you probably saw your plants in mine. ;) Good luck.

Thank you for the kind words :) I love your patterns, but moreover I appreciate your hard work and dedication when you are digging into the tech stuff to make everything look perfect.
I consider this contest a fun way of relaxing, while decorating rooms (that I love doing), to take a break from the object-editing which really messes my brain sometimes

9th Sep 2009, 2:37 PM
Congrats you guys! Thanks for the comments judges!

9th Sep 2009, 11:48 PM
I suck so bad... last place :(

Hey now...you don't suck...none of you do.
And Lucy, you are not in last.

For those of you with lower scores things can turn around in a heartbeat. ;)

Great job matrix. I really like those colors.

10th Sep 2009, 1:58 AM
my second was update, not my best work, due to the cohesiveness, but I tried :) and thank you sisaly :p

10th Sep 2009, 5:30 PM
I went for a more rustic feel this time, with coarse wood, warm colors and some floral patterns. Tried to make the room "lived".

Kitchen, first pic is the night shot.
Dining room, first one is the night shot.

Great rooms you guys...I am having a bit of a CAST block(lol or not). I am almost there and will have my pics up either late tonight or sometime tomorrow. Good luck everyone! Well here's my K & D. To honestly tell you, I don't know what the style is...I tried to go with an exotic, tropical kind of feel.

lemoncandy, I'm so sorry I didn't see your pictures! I love your rustic theme. Reminds me of my mother's kitchen.

Alisar, sorry you missed out, maybe you can catch Cycle 2.

sever_009, do you realize that you have rotten food on your counter and in three of your pics you can see the sim locator?

I hate that frigging thing. I know my sim is right in front of my face....thank you EA. Without your help I might never have found them.

easypeaze, You managed to make a great dining room out of one of my least favorite patterns and leopard print. Brilliant job!

12th Sep 2009, 2:07 PM
Thank you Sisaly! This contest is fun and even if I don't go on, I would love to follow it and continue decorating this house. I also want to thank lemoncandy for all her little goodies(don't know what I would do without them!) and another thank you to JaneSamborski love your wood conversions! You guys rock!

12th Sep 2009, 4:04 PM

What becomes immediately obvious when viewing this kitchen, is that there's a definite purple and black theme. The threads of white dotted here and there serve to bring some lightness into the room, as does the presence of plants. It's the most spacious room when viewed in comparison with the dining room, and both mesh in particular ways.

It's a kitchen for someone who likes sleek, and who loves to cook. The ceramic and metal bookcase gives much-needed space for cookery books and, if there isn't something in there for a masterchef to prepare - the television will have a cooking channel to view. The kitchen also has a laid-back breakfast bar, for those less formal moments.

Dining Room

Most of the light for these two rooms comes from the dining room and, as the black and purple theme continues, differing shades start to come out. There's a greater appearance of white too, to increase the brightness of the room. It's clear to see too, that this time there is a larger array of patterns and thse bring together the overall "funky" theme that underlies this area.

12th Sep 2009, 4:16 PM
TRIriana...I was seriously going to do purple! It's my favorite color. Last night I was thinking that if I make it to the next round I'm going to so do something purple. Great job!

12th Sep 2009, 4:16 PM
TRIriana, I love me some purple!

One quick question, does that part of your house have a roof? Cause those shadows make it look like it's outside. No one else has shadows like that.
I do that all the time, add a new room on then forget to make a roof for it. :/

12th Sep 2009, 4:51 PM
Thank you, Easypeaze :)

Sisaly, I'll double check!

Im quite new to taking pictures, i ask for apology for the poor presentaion, but see i learn :D

13th Sep 2009, 6:26 AM
Thanks easypeaze! Wish I could find a skintone I like that doesn't give my sims the Michael Jackson nose. LOL

sever, you ARE learning! YAY!

LEsherick, your kitchen is so bright and sunny. Great use of color!

Just 5 more to go, then we can close the round.

LOL, contestants, not hours. You have 15 hours. ;)

13th Sep 2009, 7:01 AM
Thanks I hope this round is better than the last. My creative juices are flowing now.

13th Sep 2009, 7:26 AM
I decided to keep the same theme since I am building this house anyways.
Since I was so worried about trying to get my photos to show last time I didn't get in a description of what I was doing so here's one now..
This house was once a beautiful Gothic manor..It has been abandoned and then adopted by several groups of people, including witches, ghosts and even a group of emo kids.;)Each one of it's residents have left their mark, leading to it's somewhat jumbled but eclectic decor.
Okay first the kitchen
AS you can see the place is falling apart a bit and nature has found it's way in.http://i118.photobucket.com/albums/o88/babu357/kday1.jpg
This archway is the entrance to the dining room.http://i118.photobucket.com/albums/o88/babu357/kday2.jpg
The part of the kitchen was most likely left by the witches he lived here. Lots of spell books and leftover potion ingredients left on the tables. The Cauldron still lights up every night by itself.http://i118.photobucket.com/albums/o88/babu357/kn.jpg
ANd here's the dining room..A wall of mirrors reflect the room and floating candles.
The former exit to a lounge area is now basically a exit to a sun room.;)
The Dining room at night.

13th Sep 2009, 8:44 AM
Anyone else notice how many rooms are using purple or orange? It's most of them, which is funny because I don't immediately think of those as kitchen colors. Apparently they are though, 'cause I'm taking a ride in that car too.

Probably isn't my most inspired work, but oh well. I'm not a huge fan of kitchen design. Bring on the bathrooms!!!! (sorry, late=loopy)

13th Sep 2009, 8:54 AM
babu, your idea is original and interesting!

Jane, I think you did great! I know I should PM you but, where is everyone getting that divider thingy for the floor?

13th Sep 2009, 8:57 AM
You mean the fence-y thing? Build -> Fences :) It's the first one.

Oh! and thank you for the complement. I went boring with the walls again, so I'll probably take a hit for that. I just wasn't feeling super inspired this round. I'll just have to come up with something genius next round to make up for it.

13th Sep 2009, 9:02 AM
Wow, a fence....I never would have thunk it.

Thanks Jane!

13th Sep 2009, 1:13 PM
Jane, your tile patterns work great in there!
And Babu I just love your kitchen, that corner with the cauldron is pure genius! :)

13th Sep 2009, 7:52 PM
We have two hours left for submissions!!
I have some judges scores, but obviously not all of our contestants have posted.

Due to a kid with a serious case of flu, I can't be relied on to be online in two hours.

So, this is what we are going to do, the judges will give me their scores after 4pm GMT -5 and I will post Round 3 as soon as I can get online tonight.

If the other contestants have NOT posted by 4pm GMT -5 there will be NO eliminations.

Sorry for the upheaval but I'm worn the crap out and need to rest AND take care of a very sick 4 year old.

13th Sep 2009, 7:52 PM
I guess it's time to post my entry now. But first congrats everyone, you did all really nice stuff and some are just amazing ! And thanks to all the creators of the awesome stuff I use, some will recognise their work since they are contestants here :anime:.

Mine is not so good, I wanted to make-up for my bad score but I guess it's going to be for next round if I'm still in. I wanted something really different but run out of time and inspiration so I finally did an eclectic style, with a yellow kitchen since it seems to the new trend for 2009 :

Thank you everyone for your patience with me. *yawns*
Oy, this has been a crazy day.

We say goodbye to scoopy loopy and Lucycat whom didn't get their entries in on time.
Now on to business. I have some great news for everyone. NO one will be eliminated this round. :luff:
However, that means that HALF of you will be eliminated after this round.

Here are your judges scores:

14th Sep 2009, 3:59 AM

Time to kick back and relax in the backyard; catch some rays and have a drink.
The backyard is very important to a house and the pool and patio are the centerpieces of a great backyard.

You need to submit 3 pictures of a patio area and three pictures of a pool.
As usual one picture per area must be at night.

Entries are due by Monday, Sept.21 4pm GMT -5

This is the most important round for you if you want to have a shot at participating in the Finals, since we will lose half of you.
So go all out.

Good luck and can't wait to see your creativity in pixel form!

14th Sep 2009, 4:44 AM
Thank you judges...and congrats to lemoncandy! This round is going to fun and hard(lol). Good luck all.

14th Sep 2009, 5:16 AM
Hmm...very interesting choice, Sisaly! I'm excited to see the entries. And congrats to all the contestants, all of the rooms were fantastic. :)

14th Sep 2009, 9:17 AM
I knew my style wouldn't work here hahahaha :D

Oh well, ive got 30% chance of going to the last round :D
It's better than nothing hahahaha

how in world am I going to put together a pool and patio in 7 days! sisaly! you got some 'splainin to do :!: but, yes, this will be quite hard. I'm scared to see what My pation will look like...

14th Sep 2009, 3:17 PM
Sounds Fun but Challenging. I do have a question so the round after this one is the last the Final right. And it would end on the 28 or 29.

17th Sep 2009, 4:41 AM
babu, your idea is original and interesting!

And Babu I just love your kitchen, that corner with the cauldron is pure genius! [/QUOTE]

thanks I'm glad to hear you like it. I don't know if i'll be around after this round..but i'm still gonna stick with my theme..how do you make a Gothic pool?LOL It should be fun.;o)

Oh cow TRIriana! That is stunning. *faints*

17th Sep 2009, 6:33 PM
Thank you. :) I had so much fun doing this round! It was definitely a challenge, because landscaping is usually not my thing, LoL.

18th Sep 2009, 3:34 AM
That's really beautiful! I like how you managed the colors :)

I've got a little question, I've nearly finished my landscaping but i'd like to know if we really need to focus on the pool. Does this mean there's gonna be another part of the challenge on landscaping? Actually my pool is just a small part of the landscape, so, it cuts the whole theme if I just shoot the pool.

18th Sep 2009, 3:43 AM
lana, you can shoot it however you want. You will not be docked points on how you focus your pics.

18th Sep 2009, 4:47 AM
Argh crap! I thought I had till sunday to get round II in. Sorry!!

18th Sep 2009, 7:30 AM
I hope the child is better now Sisaly!

I was surprised about the theme of this round, usually there aren't many CASTable parts in patios and pools..
I hope it's not an obligation that the two must be connected, I made them entirely different and separate. The pool is indoors.

18th Sep 2009, 8:13 PM
Thanks for the answer, sisaly. I should post my -probably- last entry soon.

Easypeaze and lemoncandy, breathtaking entries. Lemoncandy, I know you already did houses, are you going to upload the houses where you built that? If yes, I'd love to be able to play in it.

18th Sep 2009, 8:51 PM
Thank you lanawinst! I is envious of lemoncandy's decorating prowess(great entry lemoncandy!). I am loving the entries can't wait to see yours!

18th Sep 2009, 9:17 PM
scoopy, you silly. :p Hope we see you for cycle 2.

lana, can't wait to your entry!

lemoncandy, what an interesting approach, it's gorgeous.
I knew this one was going to be hard, but pool tiles and floors tiles and furniture are all CASTable so I thought you guys could manage and I was right! :giggler:

easypeaze, I can't take my eyes off of your second patio picture. I love how you can see a hint of the waterfall.

Looking at these pictures makes me want to fire up the game and decorate. Man, I wish there were more outdoor CC, like canopies and new flowers and plants. I'd also love to have string party lights. They would look fab in this game at night around the patio. *sigh*

18th Sep 2009, 10:08 PM
now that I have seen the bar, it's time to raise it :p Gonna try and play around with some idea's and see what comes from it :p hope we wont have to furnish an entire home next round. And I'm praying I didn't give sisaly an Idea, lol

18th Sep 2009, 10:34 PM
All right, this is it, I'm officially done and that was hard. I really thought that I'd never be able to make it. This time I wanted something really different, so I chose a japanese theme and tried to be as adequate as I could given the few cc and patterns for this.

Thank you Sisaly, the scenery in this game is stunning! Wow lanawinst just beautiful! Matrix54 looking forward to seeing yours.

18th Sep 2009, 11:02 PM
Lana that's amazing! You're so gonna win this round :D
(By the way I did my shots in separate houses, and I've taken the scene apart afterwards, so no upload, sorry!!)

Easypeaze I love your garden, it's beautiful.

I think the next round will be bathroom-bedroom, am I right? :D

18th Sep 2009, 11:50 PM
lana, that is simply stunning. Wonderful work.

lemoncandy, I really like matrix's idea of doing the whole house. Oh....ohhh....ohhh....I know.....we could do the garage!!!

19th Sep 2009, 1:30 AM
Lanawinst: :o stunning!beat mine
Sisaly: A garage could be fun *thinks bad thoughts*
I decided to get really crazy, then I said "what am I, crazy?" then I pulled it back, and took a simpler, yet stylish approach. My homes usually suffer, becuase I dont build Homes, I build "sets" or "set pieces" Sometimes, the job gets done, but other times, it feels unrealistic, and Hindered

Night Shot, Over View: Its was like 5/6 ish, so it should count. I might redo the pool anyway. Its a 10x20 room

Bar.This is like a 7/8 something.

Wide-Shot of the Room. Its big!

Patio, Just as simple as can be :) As you all can guess, I like blue. I wanted this to look a like a real backyard. So I took a home I had made, and redid the enitre backyard. I didn't want to put on a show, like i did with the pool hall. I just wanted to effectivly execute the challenge.

Night shot:

Grilling Area (My little sandbox in the corner :p)

Hope I make it this round :)

19th Sep 2009, 1:17 PM
Wow lanawist very nice pool and patio, me like Japanese Style, very close to nature

Now here's my patio, taken from my house in Sims, it's actually my dance floor or something then I renovated it to a patio.

And heres my pool.

I kinda had a huge creative block so i'm not too impressed with this myself, I went for a beach-y theme I would have liked some better decor, ah well. I like the infinity style pool and thats about it! You can see a bit of the pool house in some of these shots...yeah I watched too much of The O.C :)

updated my entry for the pool and patio

20th Sep 2009, 8:36 PM
Just wonderful everyone!!
We just need babu and Jane.

sam, a few things....I can see a red wall mover in one of your pics. In another a plumbbob. And you should light your lights and candles for your patio and pool night shots. It's really dark.

20th Sep 2009, 9:21 PM
oops sorry didn't notice the red wall mover he keeps popping up in live mode for some reason for me :S, i'll sort that and other things out and repost some pictures.

20th Sep 2009, 9:40 PM
I love everyone's creations this round! :bunny:

20th Sep 2009, 10:13 PM
I'm having issues...it gets to like 7 in the evening and all my outdoor lights are on and candles but all my furniture is so dark like even black sometimes. Even if i add a tonne of lights...i don't understand, my lights have a glow around them but the bulbs on the lights themselves just don't glow like I can see in other people's pictures. And yes I have checked that they're on because when I click on them it gives me the option to turn off.My nights are always really dark...

20th Sep 2009, 10:13 PM
Thanks, I'm glad you like it :) . Well, it would be really nice to win this round but when I see the gorgeous work everyone did, I'm not so sure about that. This is the hardest but the most beautiful round so far, wow everyone! .

edit: That is weird because when I click on the lights, there's a menu where i can vary the strenght of the lights by doing so.

20th Sep 2009, 10:33 PM
sam have you checked your graphics settings under Options? See if your lighting and shadows are on high.

As for the wall mover, I get that occasionally too after being in build a long time.
Right now, I'm having problems with the 'hand'. If I hover over the fridge in live mode and instead of the little astriks thingy, it's the grab hand. It's totally weird....

20th Sep 2009, 10:39 PM
Hi everyone!
I've been following this contest and am amazed at the level of attention you guys devote to the details when decorating, I'm simply astounded! I've learnt a lot on what CASt is capable of now...thanks, all.

@sammann89, not sure if this can help you but what traits do your Sims in that lot have? While doing an upload of mine, I couldn't take night time shots of the house because the outdoor lights get turned off from 9pm-6am (I think, not sure of timing), even though my test-Sim wasn't asleep and I couldn't turn it back on or have them on as auto-lights.

After an investigation, I realized the lights auto-turning-off is related to my test-Sim having a Frugal trait. So I did a quick xml mod (with Morgade's Mod Generator) to disable that frugal trait's quirk whenever I needed to take night-time screenshots on any lot (It was quicker than creating a brand new Sim in CAS or dropping that trait with AM and figuring out which other trait is less disruptive to taking photos).

Maybe for your case, your Sim(s) like subdued lighting hee... :jest: <* ducks and runs *>

20th Sep 2009, 10:40 PM
Yep I checked on my graphics because I thought it could be that, I had it on high so changed it to medium and restarted game and was still the same then changed it to the lowest and restarted game and still doesn't work. So i'm completely confused i've tried messing around with loads of things I added so many lights it was unreal and still nothing. I also tried changing the strenghts of the lights, dim did make it even darker! and brightest is what my screenshots are.Maybe my game's glitched?

Yep I get the hand aswell, it is very weird indeed

20th Sep 2009, 10:51 PM
sam, start a thread in game help and see if anyone has this issue or, more importantly, if anyone knows the answer.

EDIT: Didn't see Ellacharm's post. That's a good point and didn't realize that things would turn off due to the frugal trait. If one of your sim's has that trait, use a mod to change it just for the pics. IF IT'S NOT, then start a thread in HELP.

BTW your siggy is too long. Only five lines including spaces. Don't want to get infracted like I did......

20th Sep 2009, 10:58 PM
ok I shall do, and yeah i'm just re-loading my game up to check his traits i'm pretty sure he's not frugal. maybe if i change him to cowardly he may make all the lights bright. and thanks for the heads up on the sig!

20th Sep 2009, 11:16 PM
I wonder what round 4 will be. seeing as half of us are leaving, I'm even more curious :) ANd I swear, I have gotten worse at the sims now. this comp drained me if my talent. Hopefully, I still have more to give.

21st Sep 2009, 3:39 AM
Sam, I suggest trying to turn on the Andanced Rendering 2.0 in Graphics Setting.
Maxing the Texture Detail, Lighting and Shadows Setting to Max.
If that didn't help make sure you have taken the picture at night... cause when i just take my picture in build mode, and i just click the button where it makes the day instantly night, vice versa, the game dont make the outdoor light lit, I don't know why, but thats what i'm experiencing, hope that helps a bit...

21st Sep 2009, 3:44 AM
Thanks for the suggestions, sadly I have pretty much tried every combination of changing my settings. When I put those ones you suggested to max it doesn't change. I have someone in my house so I take the photos in live mode so that can't be the problem...I have posted this in the help section and plasticbox has suggested a few things, but it seems that it has baffled everyone!

21st Sep 2009, 1:40 PM
Hey, I'm sorry to say I'm going to have to drop out. I'm having a medical thing.. so I need to be spending all my spare time in bed complaining at my boyfriend. Good luck to everyone who is still in.

21st Sep 2009, 2:38 PM

21st Sep 2009, 2:53 PM

21st Sep 2009, 5:45 PM
O.K, basically my laptop is the source of my dark dark nights and lights outside not working properly. I cannot fix the problem unless I get a better laptop/desktop which I can't afford at the moment, so sorry sisaly but they are the best pictures i'm gonna get! :( :(

21st Sep 2009, 7:00 PM
First let me say I love all of your entries..really beautiful stuff there.:)
I'm a litle rushed so just a brief description. First three shots of the patio and then three shots of the pool/gazebo.
The garden is a bit rundown after years of neglect, but the residents seem to like it that way.;)

21st Sep 2009, 8:29 PM
All righty then, the round is closed and I'm PMing the judges. Great job babu!

I'm really sorry to see you go Jane, I too was looking forward to your entry. Get well soon. *hugs*

sam, it's ok. I'll let the judges know not to knock off points for the lighting. Darn compies not doing what we want them to do.

21st Sep 2009, 8:31 PM
Thanks Sisaly! *Starts saving for a new computer*

22nd Sep 2009, 10:30 PM

My bedroom is my sanctuary and where I decompress.
Same with my bathroom.
I love to relax in my jacuzzi tub and read.
Give me your interpretation of these two rooms.

23rd Sep 2009, 8:27 PM
Babu your distressed settings were my favorite, they've got character. They'll make a brilliant house :D
thank you so much.=D Means a lot coming from you especially.
I just came back here to thank you for the clutter objects and recolored plants you made. they really helped me add decorative touches to my rooms.;)

29th Sep 2009, 12:01 AM
I'm having to pack all my life up tomorrow as my summer break is finally over and my first semester of uni starts this week (Late I know :D). So I'm shifting back down to Uni on Wednesday, therefore I'm posting this now as I won't have chance to next couple of days as I will be busy (or busier than my usual self)
It's not great...but It's not as if I'm gonna win is it now!Anywho this is the bedroom during the day:
I HATE top views but I really couldn't show this part of the room any other way, it's a closet sort of thing one side has 2 wardrobes and huge mirror(which you can't see), other side is more storage-like
and this is the bedroom at night

This is the large ensuite bathroom during the day, in the corner is two wall showers on a huge mirror so claustrophobic sims can still shower :D:
bathroom during the day again
and bathroom at night, to the left is a seating area

Taking photo's of these rooms was such a challenge should of thought about it when building!
Anyway look forward to seeing everyone elses!

29th Sep 2009, 1:14 AM
Hey nice work Sam! Red is so lively. Good luck with your studies!
I used the same items in my rooms, well, can't have a bedroom without a closet, can you... :D
I was a bit afraid I would be the only one posting an entry this round :|
My rooms are a bit eclectic, I built them around 2 colors that nicely complement each other.

29th Sep 2009, 1:17 AM
Yours are so good as always, and exactly you just have to have a closet! I love the table thing you have done in the bathroom so creative!

29th Sep 2009, 6:15 AM
sam, your rooms are lovely! Hope you have a good year at school.
lemoncandy, I totally love your color combinations!

I have updated the OP. Less than 48 hours to get your entries in lanawinst, sever_009, and easypeaze!

29th Sep 2009, 10:16 AM
Thank you Sisaly!

29th Sep 2009, 12:53 PM
Great entries, gosh, it's gonna be hard to do as good as that. And different. I'll try my best.

How much time do we have left? I'm completely lost with the different timing :P

29th Sep 2009, 1:23 PM
You've got until tomorrow at 4pm according to this clock.

This is MY timezone time.....

29th Sep 2009, 2:39 PM
This is my Master's Bedroom shaped octagon, and still my concept for my design is modern, with the application of stones and wood for materials.

Night Shot

And this is my bathroom, overlooking the town, wood is the dominant material used.

Night Shot

I went with an eclectic theme for the bedroom a little modern, a little traditional, and a little Asian(lol)wow I went with a lot! Without further ado...

For my bath, I just wanted soothing relaxing colors, so I kept it light and fresh.

30th Sep 2009, 1:05 AM

Wow that bathroom looks really filthy, awesome! Lana you always manage to include a ton of cc that I've never seen before, where do you hunt all them down, I bet you got a secret source ;) Anyway nice work, love your arrangement.

And everybody else's for that matter. I really enjoyed seeing all the rooms you guys displayed here, all the amazing ideas, I learned some things too. (Like you don't have to make all the wall the same paint, I always tend to do that -_-) Big thank you and hugs to Sisaly for making this contest and hosting it all the way, and to every participant for providing feast for the eyes! :bunny: I don't think I deserve to win btw, sometimes I'm sooo out of ideas, lol
It's been a pleasure! mwah!

Humm okay, I might be blind but how do you rate a thread? I can't find an option for it, only Search, Jump, Subscribe, Print, View first unread.... mm where is it :p

1st Oct 2009, 1:29 PM
I thought I couldn't rate it cause I started it, but I see that the other contest running can be rated.....hummmmmm

I'll ask.....

1st Oct 2009, 1:33 PM
Congrats lemoncandy...you make your designs look like someone just stepped out of the room or will be stepping back in, beautiful but with a lived in type of feeling. I loved seeing all entries and I learned a lot, so for that thank you contestants you guys rock! Thank you Sisaly and judges. How do you rate a contest?

1st Oct 2009, 1:37 PM
I'm talking about at the top of the page you SHOULD have a ratings option like So You Think You Can Decorate?.

Story threads having ratings too.

1st Oct 2009, 1:41 PM
I'm sorry, but i'm not seeing it :report: ...not even on link you provided.

1st Oct 2009, 1:49 PM
I do see it on the link provided but not for our contest. Maybe contestants can't rate either?

1st Oct 2009, 1:53 PM
Where are you seeing lanawinst? I think I need new eyes
Edit: Okay, I see it now on the link. Yep, I need new eyes!

1st Oct 2009, 2:05 PM
Yep the other thread has a rating tool next to the search button. But this thread doesn't. weird.

1st Oct 2009, 3:51 PM
