You must also include a shot of the lot value, this can be cut and pasted onto the front picture if you wish. After those are taken care of it's up to you to decided what best showcases your home.

Doors and windows may be replaced, but not completely removed or moved to a different spot. If you remove a one-tile window, you must put a different one-tile in it's place, etc.
You may not move stairs. They may be swapped out, but must remain in the same place. You may not add stairs.

You may not add or remove foundation or decking.
You may change the texture of the roof, but nothing else, i.e. pitch, shape .

Any skill level is welcome. It's a good chance to work on your decorating skills :)
A basic knowledge of taking good in-game photos.
Judges will be expected to have their scores in within 48 hours.

Applications: Feedback (http://modthesims.info/showpost.php?p=4099435&postcount=236)

For the application, you will need to redecorate the house at 26 Via Veronaville. I will attach a download for each lot for those who no longer have them as they were in your game. For the application you do NOT choose one of the families. Just redo it however you want, there is however still a budget of 60,000.

Judges Application: I need 3 judges , and would like to have an emergency judge as well. I will be an emergency judge, but would prefer to have someone else. If you would like to judge, please post a picture of the exterior, and one interior room, of your choosing. Simply to show your own decorating skill.

Scoring

There are 3 sections scored by each individual judge.

Overall Design 10pts : Is the overall design appealing? Do the colors/patterns chosen compliment each other nicely? Does the design flow well?
* This is a rather subjective part of scoring. But don't let it intimidate you. Even if your decorating style isn't to the personal taste of a judge, as long as you have executed it well, you will still score well.

Family Needs 10pts : Does the home suit the family you chose? Does it seem like a home the chosen family would like to live in? Are there enough beds/chairs etc. for the family?

Furniture/Room Placement 10pts : Does the way the furniture is placed make sense? Does it allow for good movement throughout? Does the room placement make sense? (i.e. tiny room as bedroom with a large room for bathroom wouldn't make sense.)

There are 2 sections that are looked at by each judge, but only scored once.

Budget 10pts : Is the TOTAL LOT VALUE within the chosen families budget? (-1 pt for every 2,500 over, upto 10 pts)

Structural Integrity 40 pts : There are 7 subsections to this section-

Walls 10 pts : -2pts for the first wall section added or removed, -1 pt for each additional section, upto 10 pts.

Doors 5pts : -1pt for each door removed, added or moved, upto 5 pts.

Windows 5pts : -1pt for each window removed, added or moved, upto 5 pts.

Foundation 5pts : -2pts for the first foundation section added or removed, -1 pt for each additional section, upto 5 pts.

Roof 5pts : -5 pts for any change to the roof other than texture.

Fireplace : -5 pts for moved or removed fireplace.

Stairs 5pts : -3 pts for moving the original stairs from their position, -2 pts for adding additional stairs up to 5 pts.

*Each family will also have a bonus room. It's completely optional. It is worth 5 pts if you choose to give them the room.*

Meet the Families

The Williams Family : Budget - 65,000 - Linda and Joe are suffering from empty nest syndrome. The last of their 5 children has just moved out. So they have decided they really have no need for a big house anymore. Over the years, they have collected quite a bit of stuff, so they need lots of storage/display space (bookshelves, dressers, cabinets, etc.). They hate modern style furnishings. BONUS They would still like to have a guest room, for when the kids come to visit.

The Miller Family : Budget - 58,000 - Joanne and Larry are celebrating their one year anniversary with a new home. They were high school sweethearts. He was captain of the football team, she was a cheerleader. They are still very active and they still like their school colors, red and gold. They don't have a whole lot of money, but they have love. BONUS They have been thinking about starting their family. Maybe if you build it, they will come ;)

The Johnson Family : Budget - 70,000 - Stacie, Brian and the twins, Hannah and Teresa (aged 9) love the beach. They can't afford to move to the shore, so they'd like to bring the beach to their home. BONUS The twins don't mind sharing a room, BUT they would LOVE to have their own bathroom (their parents would love it too.) *Just so there's no confusion, I mean one full bath for the girls and one full bath for the parents. Each twin does not need their own individual bathroom.

The Winters Family : Budget - 70,000 - Lara and Josh have recently acquired a roommate, Josh's mother Edna. Edna and Lara don't always get along, but they are trying to for Josh. Edna just can't live by herself anymore. She doesn't really like only having a bedroom to herself. And her country taste clashes with Lara's more contemporary style. BONUS Edna would like to have her own sitting room.

We have 20! We are full! :D

Ohh sign me up! Guess I have to get the house done and pictures up first though. $60,000 will be a lot easier to work with then the $40,000 we had in the last contest.
Thank you for uploading the house jones otherwise I'd have to restore Veronaville as I don't have it any more. This should be interesting as I don't have any idea what the houses there are like except they are all have somewhat medieval wall cladding.

I had to up the budgets jo, the base price of the lots is higher in Veronaville. I think there's still a little more money to play with than last time, but not as much as it may seem ;)

Having messed around with the house for a few hours tonight, I can confirm that the budget is indeed not overly generous :P lol all part of the challenge.

I'm happy with what I've done with the exterior, but struggling to be decisive about the inside! Time to sleep on it I think, I'm yawning too much to concentrate on it...

Oh, and God bless Eaxis and their love of two-doored bathrooms - how could a sim possibly survive with having to walk a couple more steps! :rolleyes:

Would it be acceptable to replace two side-by-side one tile windows with a single two tile window? So that the same wall sections are windowed?

I'm thinking about trying this--the deadlines make me nervous but two weeks should be doable since the walls don't move.

Hey Sunbee the 6th point on the rule says Doors and windows may be replaced, but not completely removed or moved to a different spot. If you remove a one-tile window, you must put a different one-tile in it's place, etc. .

So i believe the answer to your question is you are not allowed to do it. Its 1 tile for 1 tile, 2 tile for 2 tile and they need o be in the same position where the original one was. You are allowed to use a bigger or smaller one to replace the original as long as they are the same tile with as the original. So anything outside of this is contradictory to the rule

EDIT-Applying to be a Judge
Okay let me open the judges application by applying to be one.

I have a question: By a budget of 60K, do you mean that the player starts with 60K and can't spend more than that or that the house can't be worth more than 60K at the end?

If it's the first, would it work if I made a sim, used familyfunds to give him exactly 60K, and used that as the budget?

Croutonian
13th Mar 2013, 3:44 PM
Your answer would lie within the scoring section:
Budget 10pts : Is the TOTAL LOT VALUE within the chosen families budget?

So you'll want to keep checking the lot value whilst you work away in build/buy mode :)

Oh, and Sunbee's question about windows is a good one actually, cos in real life you wouldn't really have 2 windows right next to each other but not joined up to make a bigger one... In the game it can look kinda messy and daft when there's more than one window immediately adjacent. Up to Jones though!

If it's not allowed and you want to change them to use the madeover version in your gameplay, there's nothing stopping you changing them round after you've taken the pics and submitted your entry :)

Sunbee and Duckie, everyone has already answered your questions correctly. So I'm just backing them up ;) If it's a 1 tile to start with, it has to stay a one tile. And the budget is for the total lot value. You could still make the family with the budget and move them in, as long as you use the cheat while they are still in the bin. That way the base price of the lot would come out of the budget too.

And we have our first judge! Welcome aboard Adonis! Nice pics :) (Except those creepy badgers on the wall...lol...I've always thought the Badger Family Portraits were creepy)

I can't wait to see those redos!

I'm really happy to see cycle 2 up and running. I've got a lot of things on my plate at the moment, but I'll see if I can't squeeze this in too. I really loved the last one and being your 'trouble maker' was all the more fun. ;) My own Veronaville is my medieval neighborhood, so maybe I'll try to follow the rules while keeping to my theme. I could always use more peasants!

justJones

Veronaville is the obvious choice to adapt to medieval ;) Might be a bit difficult to bring the beach to the Johnsons while keeping it medieval, but if you wanna give it a shot, I'd love to see what you come up with :D

Hello.

Since I won't have time to actually make something for this, I'd like to try my hand at being a judge. :) oh. Ok, I'll pop the lot in tonight and get some pics for you.. But I think my personal decorating taste is still 'early college eclectic.' :rofl: .... now Landscaping is another story.. I love my simmies for that... I get to plan that fabulous garden that won't grow in a real life desert! :bunny:

P.S>

Jones! I tried to install this game on my old computer which is just Base game and uni and it bombed. Which EPs does your lot require?

Edit: I took it to my game computer and just found 26 Verona which I had not changed. Anyway my SIms2 game is stripped of CC except for the stuff I'm making for multicultural so my sample is game only decor. Here's the pics. Took about an hour but I need to get back to my multicultural project. 3 pics. Living/family/kitchen and front

justJones

Everyone is right, you can change the function of any room you like.

Porky, it shouldn't require any, but your exterior and interior shots don't have to be from this lot. Any house you've ever done is fine. Both pics don't even have to be from the same house.

Yes, if you have enough money left to do so! lol

justJones

Yeah,like Croutonian said, it's allowed, if you can afford it.

And we have 2 judges! Welcome, porky! Still need one more, and hopefully an EJ. And of course, at least 10 contestants ;)

Croutonian

I'm sure it'll make the 10 easily!

joandsarah77
14th Mar 2013, 5:05 AM
I'm still doing mine. Got the inside done now for some garden. If we wern't taking some time off I’d never get done this fast.

One way to 'afford' a car is use a deco car. I used a $1 car statue on the last house in the Pleasantview contest.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
And I'm finished.
Our first contestant! Welcome back, jo!
Couple of things I'm about to add to the first post.
Half-walls are allowed, since it's kind of like a more solid fence.
Fireplaces may NOT be moved or removed. They can be swapped. You may add one if you want to, but only one of the lots doesn't have at least one to begin with.
Hi, I'd love to have a shot at judging so here's four of my pics that you might like :)
I've included two different houses (they show a great difference in flexibility of my decoration plus one has no custom content whilst the other is loaded with cc)
If I don't get to judge that's not a problem. I'll have a go at joining the contest if I have enough time.
3 Judges! Welcome aboard, DeadSim!
To all the contestants returning from the Pleasantville cycle, we have 3 new judges this time around, which makes it better, because now you wont have the unfair advantage of knowing what the judges like ;) You'll have to learn what they like along with the new contestants.
I will post a mini feedback post for the application rounds- just a tiny bit of feedback, no scores. To give you a feel for the judges.
I'd still like to have an EJ, but I will do it if I have to, so all we need are 9 more contestants. (Which I think we'll manage, lol)
Horrorsimmer12, yes, you can. That is exactly why I chose to only use BG 'hoods. No EPs required.
Well I'm glad I didn't take away the fire place, because I did then thought better of it and put it back. Had a feeling that would come under structural.
It would have been ok for now, jo, since it's just the application. Yeah I had totally forgot about it, till I was redoing one of the lots last night. Forgot about the half-walls too till I saw your entry. No matter how prepared I think I am and how polished I think the contest is, there's always something ;) At least I took care of that pretty quickly. Now we're good....till something else pops up, lol.
Hey Jones, could you make a clarification for me here with regards to the families. For example we have four families, does it imply that the application round is connected to the The Williams Family
justJones
14th Mar 2013, 3:00 PM
For the application round, obino, you do NOT choose one of the families. Just keep it at or under 60,000. The families are for the main 4 rounds. You'll chose one for each lot, which family you put with each lot is up to you.
I'll check it out. Forgot to make sure there weren't any piggybackers. That may have been porky's problem too.
*EDIT* I can't find any reason it shouldn't work. There's no piggybackers, it's a BG lot. I'll keep investigating the problem, but I can't find any reason it shouldn't work :(
jones, just because it's a base game lot from a base game hood doesn't mean that the house itself is base game anymore. Lots require all of the EPs that your game currently has, so the only way to provide base game lots is to use AnyGame Starter to make a new base only game and pull them from there. That's what it sounds like is the problem anyways. :)
Just a tip for everyone: I suggest not moving a family in with the set budget. This is because sometimes when you sell certain items, you won't get the full price value back from it. This could possibly affect your final budget. (I think this usually happens if you test the lot then when you sell things that are no longer worth their full value). If you're running base game and worried about blowing your budget, your best bet is to just return to the neighbourhood to check lot value again and again as you approach the max spend limit.
Also on another note, I don't think CFE (constrainfloorelevation) has been brought to anyone's attention. As a judge or even a contestant I'd be curious whether it's possible to lift the foundation of a lot from standard 4 clicks to 6 or 8. This wasn't mentioned in structural integrity and thought it'd probably be good to clear this one up.
justJones
14th Mar 2013, 5:37 PM
No, adjusting the foundation height with CFE wouldn't be allowed. That would be a pretty major renovation IRL. We try to avoid those, lol. Also would cost a lot IRL, and nothing in game
Hi Deadsim,
People will have to have at least one sim on the lot to do the screenshots without lines.
There are a couple of ways to get around loss of value issue when testing:
1: Export a copy to the lot library, then I move in a sim to take the pictures
or 2: Exit without saving after you've taken the pictures.
Are you referring to the grid lines that show in both build and buy modes? If so, these can be hidden by temporarily enabling the recolour tool or press the options button on your User Interface bar or press F5 on your keyboard. These two different options should allow you to view your lot without grid lines.
You can then press tab to enter live camera mode to take your required screenshots.
However, if you wish to take your screenshots with your sims on the lot, this will be done after worrying about the budget so it wouldn't be an issue anyway.
Lol Jones you are correct of course. (she even drags my old picture up :P ) I meant as an addition to make a foundation area larger.
RowenaObsidian, that is a lovely house! The atomic set recolors are fantastic, WCIF please? This is the first time I've ever seen that set actually usable. The living room is also particularly gorgeous - I'm in love with the rug and throw pillows.
Yeah, Phae. They aren't too awful structurally. I had a hard time picking lots that weren't all pretty much the same floor plan though. Seems like there are only 2-3 basic floor plans in Veronaville (unless you go for the expensive houses).
My made-over house at 26 via Veronaville. This house is for my application to the contest :)
This house cost $52.817 and there is a screenshot of the front of the house. If I need to upload more pictures of my application house please reply to me :) The description from the contest said the house cost had to be under $60.000.
I'm sorry for my earlier comment but you have to download the screenshot :( If anyone could tell me how to post pictures so that they appear in the comment, please tell me. :(
Okay thanks :) Sorry. I didn't realise that the lot we needed for the application was actually in my game. But how do you post pictures in the comments?
TheDeadSim
15th Mar 2013, 10:47 AM
@Horrorsimmer12
I highly recommend you stop double, triple, or quadruple posting. I understand you are new, however MTS Guidelines state you can't have multiple posts one after another. Try and edit your posts if required to join them together.
If you need to include the pictures in your post, click the go advanced button at the bottom of the page, add the individual screenshots into the attachment area, these should all show up on your post in an attachments section. The rules require a front, rear, floor plan shots (top floor and bottom), and any additional pics up totally no more than 10 that will best display your house.
Another thing to note: BMP is not the most suitable format for sims pictures.
See this link for more info on how to get the best screenshots in game: http://www.modthesims.info/wiki.php?title=MTS2:Creator_Guidelines/Screenshot_Basics
joandsarah77
15th Mar 2013, 10:48 AM
You can't upload the pictures like that, take a look at mine or the other entry on page 2.
The best way to take pictures is with a screenshot program. There are a few free ones around, I use Fraps. Because the free version takes them in bmp form the pictures are too large for the board so I scale them down to jpegs with Gimp. I learnt how from the creators guidelines here. http://www.modthesims.info/wiki.php?title=MTS2:Creator_Guidelines/Screenshot_Basics Once resized I upload the pictures to Photobucket, but any photo hosting site will do. I then use the img line from under each photo in Photobucket and copy and paste them into my post. If all of that sounds overwhelming at first just try using regular ingame shots and upload those to photobucket first. Those won't give you large crisp pictures though so it's worth learning how to use a screenshot program and a photo program like Gimp. Gimp is also free.
Again, do you see the edit button Horrorsimmer? Don't post underneath yourself, just edit and add the new bit you want.
TheDeadSim your post showed up after I posted. The rules didn't state a back shot although I thought in the last contest they were.
TheDeadSim
15th Mar 2013, 10:58 AM
Oops! My mistake. I stand corrected.
However with uploads at MTS a rear shot is required so if you stick with their requirements/guidelines you should be fine :)
I will add that if you do include a rear image, it will give the judges a better view of the makeover you've complete. (Just a suggestion though as you can't physically lose points unless of course Jones changes the rules).
justJones
15th Mar 2013, 1:08 PM
A rear shot isn't required, but it is a good idea. But that is up to the individual.
Horrorsimmer, as everyone has already said, please don't multi post. Just keep editing your last post. If someone posts after you, you can start a new post. But if the bottom post is your's, just edit it. There's a little edit button in the bottom right corner of your post. As for the pics, both jo and DeadSim are right. You can attach pics directly to your post, or use photobucket, etc.
HERE (http://modthesims.info/showpost.php?p=3980349&postcount=74) is a little explanation of how to add pics by direct upload. With screenshots. And you need more pics. The only ones required are the front, a top down of each floor showing the layout, and a pic of the lot value which can be in one of the others. But we need to see the inside too. Both inside and out are equally important in the contest.
Also a reminder for ALL contestants, you need to take your top down pics with the walls up, so that the judges can see the doors and windows.
YAY, IT'S BACK \o/ Last time I learned so much and got plenty of new amazing cc (I can actually hear my Downloads folder weeping inside my computer right now, knowing it'll probably put on weight), I'm sure this time it'll be even better!
I have a question, about the extra rooms: do we need to add them without changing the current layouts of the houses, or can we add and/or remove inside walls in order to creat them? I know the rules say we can't do that, but I think it's better to check than losing points because I didn't ask :D You can bet I'll have a busy night later!
I have a couple of questions about the challenge:
Are we allowed to change the location/style of stairs? (So, could I replace a straight set of stairs with a spiral?)
I know we can't remove existing fireplaces. However, can we take it out and replace it with a different one? In 26 Via Veronaville, can we take out the Casbah Casuals fireplace and put in the Gentrific "Flame-o-Rama" fireplace instead as they're the same 'shape'?
Sorry if this is really obvious or if I'm missing something. I've never even considered doing a contest before. :)
You can swap out fireplaces. No spiral stairs. Stairs can only be swapped for another straight stair, with the exact same placement.
Oh man, I'm nearly done with my application house (just need to do the dreaded landscaping). I only read the first couple of posts when I started because I followed along with the last home makeover contest, but wasn't in the contest. And I just came back to read through all the posts and I noticed the new rule regarding the windows: that 2 one-tile windows adjoining each other cannot be replaced by a two-tile window. Hello aaries16, you need to follow the rules, you replace a 1 tile window with only a 1 tile window. This is meant to be fun and the rules are there for all to follow and am sure you will find some lovely one tile windows out there :cool: . I'm confused. The house didn't have any 2-tile windows to start with, so I don't see how one could have been replaced with two 1-tiles. And I don't see one with two 1-tile doors either. There's a 2 tile window on the second floor in the second bedroom in the front of the house. It looks like a 1 tile because it's one of the base ones with shutters. Plus many of the base game one-tile doors look seamless when put side by side to create a 2-tile door look. There's a lot of tricks of the trade when it comes to building and decorating in the Sims 2, I'm still learning them. I was amazed at the crazy things I can do with boolprop snapobjectstogrid false.
You are right about the 2-tile, I knew that but forgot. ( I did my redo of this lot a while ago so I could get a feel for a usable budget) But I stilll don't see anyone who used two 1-tile doors. The Mauritania style door is a 2-tile from this set (http://modthesims.info/download.php?t=313762) and the other is clearly one 2-tile. If you haven't already changed your windows for the application, i'll allow it for now. And jo, she's right, you replaced the 2-tile in front with two 1-tiles. But part of the application round is to make sure everything is clear and understood. That's why it's not scored.
Ooh, nice to know there is an expansion set for that door, I might be utilizing that in the future. But no problem. I like having this application round, to get a feel for the rules. I did change out my windows and finished my landscaping. I'll be getting the pictures and posting them later today hopefully. I have to get on with the obligations of my weekend for now.
Yeah, I use that set fairly often. It's a very useful download.
ShadowsMystery, forgot to answer your question. I had thought about this when I did my redos, but never addressed it. I've decided that they must be replaced with another fireplace with a traditional chimney, i.e. not the pot belly stove, "Red Ember Freestanding Fireplace" etc. So basically the fireplace AND chimney need to be in the same place they were.
I'm new to contests like this, so can you please clarify what you mean by "Only free custom content is allowed." I *think* you mean that you don't want stuff from paysites in the entry...or do you mean that we cannot use custom content that is shown to be only 0 simoleons in the catalog...?
justJones
16th Mar 2013, 8:01 PM
It means no pay sites :) Although I also discourage the use of really cheap cc for the sake of lowering the lot value. You should try to only use cc that costs about the same as a similar catalog item. Like try not to use a couch that cost 5 simoleons (unless it's made of cardboard boxes, lol)
So I'm making over the application round house now, but I have a question. There is a two-tile window on the upper story. Can I replace it with 2 one-tile windows?
justJones
16th Mar 2013, 8:31 PM
No. It must be a 2-tile. It can be another "single" window on 2-tile, like the one that is there, but it must be one window with a 2-tile foot print.
Its really good to see that many wants to join this lovely competition Okay guys, and I feel its good to really explain the change thing regarding the windows. Firstly, the essence of rules is to guide us in what we do but when we try to circumvent it, it kind of really make the whole thing boring. The rule is quite simple.
Doors and windows may be replaced, but not completely removed or moved to a different spot. If you remove a one-tile window, you must put a different one-tile in it's place, etc.
Replace a 1 tile window with a 1 tile window. So if there are 2 single tile windows placed together and you want to change them, you simple use another single tile window for each one.
jones7659 said in post #88 that part of the application round is to make sure everything is clear and understood. So I think it is good to really read the rules again because the same question has been asked over and over again.
Most have asked the question about the 2x1 centered single tile window left top of the front view of the house. So if you intend to change it you have to look for a different 2x1 centered single tile window but not a 2 tile window
I hope this helps :)
@IfIWereAZombie welcome on board. I would suggest when taking your front view image to try and take it front the front as if you are standing in front of the house and not from a corner. I would also recommend you go into your option category-Graphics and performance and un-tick the reference to shadow so that you do not have shadows obscuring your images. See attached image
For the application round I decorated a house for a young couple and their baby. I thought this is as good of a time as ever to utilize some of the decorations/wallpapers/doors/windows I don't use as frequently too, to see how they fit in. So my inspiration started with the storybook building decorations. I was a bit disappointed I couldn't use that 3-tile bay window from the storybook set in place of the 3 1-tile windows in the master bedroom, but I'll play by the rules.
All the windows in this application house are 1 tile windows. Some are grouped so they appear to be 2 or 3 tiled but they are actually i tile.
joandsarah77
16th Mar 2013, 11:19 PM
That's what I was thinking Karen, so aaries 2 tile up there is against the rules.
justJones
16th Mar 2013, 11:25 PM
I actually will disagree with you on one thing, Adonis, single windows centered on 2-tiles can be replaced with a standard 2-tile. Just not two 1-tile. Some prefer minimal cc in their game and there aren't many single centered on 2-tiles from EAxis. Especially if you don't have many EPs.
karen and jo, technically the front window on the second floor is 2-tile. It is a single style, but it is centered so the footprint is 2-tile.
Welcome, aaries16!
joandsarah77
16th Mar 2013, 11:29 PM
Okay, ^ that ^ I didn't know. Or I did, but hadn't thought about it. I don't think that point has ever been mentioned before. But even though it looks like a one window tile it still is really a two tile, correct? So those windows with the shutters take up 2 tiles, but only give you one window.
justJones
16th Mar 2013, 11:34 PM
Right, jo, if you'll look at your own app, you must have realized it took up 2 tiles, because you replaced it with two 1-tiles (which is not allowed, but no biggie in the application round).
This is an incredibly irrelevant edit, but Space Pony is an incredibly short lived title! I gained it and moved on to the next in one day! I rather liked being a space pony :(
joandsarah77
16th Mar 2013, 11:37 PM
Hang on, I made a mistake in the windows? Where exactly? I didn't realize. Dang I don't want to lose points unintentionally.
Yes, what is up with that? Cool one day and boring the next. :lol:
justJones
16th Mar 2013, 11:40 PM
Not even the next! lol. The window you were talking about in aaries' entry that is a 2-tile, you have two 1-tiles. You aren't loosing any points since the application isn't scored, but I know there is at least one more single window centered on 2-tiles in the other lots so keep an eye out.
joandsarah77
16th Mar 2013, 11:43 PM
I'm going to have to be eagled eyed over that then, but I see Karen thought the same as I did. At least this is only the application round.
So I'm a little confused about how many houses a person will be doing in the course of this contest. We do a generic house first, followed by the four specific families' houses, one for each round? Five houses in total?
joandsarah77
When I began working at this house, I wanted to make it really different from the Veronaville style, which is very established in my head. I thought this house would belong to a cool grandma that is raising her geeky grandson.
I'm working on my application (well, actually it's done; I've just gotta work on the pictures.... which might take a while) and I'm experimenting with print screen rather than the C key, but now I've got the red pause lines around the picture. I can't find anything about cropping in the rules - should I crop the pictures to get rid of the pause lines or just leave it?
Thanks for hosting a second cycle - I didn't see the Pleasantview one until apps had closed, and I'm really looking forward to working on my decorating and picture taking skills for this competition.
I think I'll leave the pause lines for now and see what the judges say. Does the mod remove the red lines in normal gameplay, or just when in tab mode for photos?
I'm currently using this mod as well and find it extremely useful. To answer your question, it will remove the red pause lines from all game modes. It means you will no longer see the pause lines unless you were to remove the mod from your folder to restore them to their previous state.
If you're concerned about 'missing' the red lines, you wouldn't be the only one. I was worried I would miss them, but now that I've used this mod for a while I'm actually glad they're gone.
No pictures of the bathrooms because trying to get that angle was nearly impossible! Fair play to those who managed to capture them :) The bathroom downstairs features "original" fixtures while upstairs has been modernised.
Here is my application entry. I decided to go for a beach themed house. I hope you like it :).
Please note: I added a door and a window to create a shower in the bathroom but no walls were added!
Very nice, karen! Aince the application round isn't scored, it doesn't matter, but you would have still lost 2 pts, one for the door and one for the window, but that's better than those 2 and another 3 if you had added the walls there too ;) I love the beachy theme.
I would almost let you get away with it, since the added door and window weren't really added to the house, but rules are rules, lol. Creative thinking though :) Does the shower function like that? Can they get to the shower? Just curious.
Have no idea whether the shower functions or not, I know it does if you put walls up, not done that before and I didn't playtest the house, but I might, just to see. If you don't try you don't get :)
I would guess then that it would, if it does with walls. Though I'm not sure how a door that's not in a wall is treated by sims. They tend to be finicky sometimes.
I wanna know where you got those adorable bathroom clutter bits! The toothbrush cups in particular, and the soap dispenser is also very nice. In the blue bedroom, wcif the desk?
Bathroom Clutter - 3to2 Gosik's Aura Bathroom Clutter - This conversion was made by Maron and I got it at GOS, but I tried searching for it, and I really can't find it there nor on Google and Tumblr! I'm starting to believe she took it down for some reason, I'm really sorry!
Here's my entry: 26 Veronaville Way is owned by one of Mr. Capp's employees and his wife. While he puts in long hours at the office, she reigns supreme over cocktails with important people from his work in the evenings and takes their tween daughter to dance every day. The young lady dances with the Veronaville Ballet, of course, and like every other girl in the troupe has a huge crush on Tybalt. She's not quite ready to box up her toys, but she'd be devastated if Tybalt found out she still plays tea party!
Toad,I'm sorry. I added you once, but sometimes when I've edited a post multiple times, the most recent edit disappears when I make a new one. Don't know why and I usually notice but for some reason I didn't this time. Adding you back in now :)
Sunbee, Your pics are a little small, especially the top downs. The top downs are also zoomed out too far. The interiors are small, but you can see them fairly well. The top downs are almost impossible to see. Even just zooming in more would help. The size is usable, if they were zoomed. Larger would be best, but they at least need to be zoomed in. I'm going to go ahead and add you to the table, but you will want to try to get better top downs for the other rounds or you may lose points because the judges wont be able to see everything.
Yeah, I've got a lot to learn about how to make pictures work right! On my monitor, they looked nice and zoomed in. And then, after I took them, they didn't. Still, I thought at this point it was better to get entered and then work on picture taking, rather than the other way around and have eleven other people beat me to entering, right?
Maybe it's because I have a widescreen monitor? Maybe I need to find my photoshop disk and install that? (Okay, no maybe there.) If anyone has suggestions please let me have them. The one problem I don't have is using print screen successfully, at least! Maybe I should use print screen for all of them. I'll play around with it, anyway, and see what improvements I can make. It's all about learning something new, at least for me.
Have you been using the capture tool built into sims?
This tool usually results in poor quality captures no matter what settings you choose. Print screen is the ideal way to take pictures easily for sims whilst you're in live camera mode. Here is a great tool which I use for screenshots (https://code.google.com/p/sharex/). It's very advanced but also completely free. If you're at all overwhelmed by it you should probably stick to print screen. I'm currently trying to do up some tutorials for this software which should help people get easy screenshots.
If you like the look of the software, just click on the download tab at the top of the page then choose the latest version. It should install on your computer without any problems.
Just some information that might be useful :D :
If you guys are having trouble taking the pictures, you should try using a third-party tool. Well, you should do so even if you're NOT having trouble, since the in-game camera sucks big time. I use an amazing free program, called IrfanView, to take mine. With it you can take screenshots, save them in many formats, and also resize them and make some adjustments very easily (like increasing brightness, sharpening and adding frame/border): www.irfanview.com
Yes, that's what I've been using. The pictures I get look fine on my live journal, at least to me. But the game is not in live mode, right? Live mode requires sims on the lot, doesn't it? Or when I hit tab, is that called live mode? I should say I have a camera mod--Tom Duhamel's.
Sunbee, if you have Windows 7 you already have a free screen capture. Look for the snipping tool - it's a little icon with little scissors over a circle.
Here's my application. I turned it into a little Italian villa like the one I stayed in outside of Siena a few years ago. Aside from the fact that it has two storeys.
1. Stucco, terra cotta roof, little lion-head front door light sconce probably swiped from some Roman ruins somewhere.
2. Ground floor.
3. Upper floor. Both washrooms have a tub, a sink, a toilet, and a bidet.
4. Kitchen and dining area.
6. Master bedroom.
7. "Galileo" bedroom for the nerd kid staying with parents. ;)
8. Patio with firepit.
http://i660.photobucket.com/albums/uu326/bigwinged/The%20Sims/26vvpatio.jpg
9. Breezeway. I replaced the three little stained-glass windows with these open archways. They have shutters so you can close them in the daytime and keep things cool, and open them up at night to air the place out. One of the best things about Tuscany: NO MOSQUITOES.
IrfanView is very easy and simple :D Download it and try it for yourself! Here are the shortcuts:
C - Capture Setup (AKA Snapshot tool)
Here you set a hotkey, format and destination directory (if you save in *.jpg, go to the options menu and make sure quality is 100%. If my memories are right, it sets quality as 80% as default).
Ctrl + R - Resize
Shift + S - Sharpen
Shift + G - Color Corrections (brightness, saturation, and gamma adjustments)
S/Ctrl + S - Save/Save As
And that's all :beer:
EDIT: I Forgot to say, it has a batch operations menu in which I believe you can batch resize pictures, even though I've never done that before! I use the batch menu to rename lots of files, and it is really easy to do.
Regarding screencaps: I'm using GIMP, with TS2 in windowed mode. In camera mode I can't leave the TS2 screen and have the POV stay the same, so here are my steps.
1) In GIMP's File menu there's an Acquire or Create option. Choose that and then choose Screengrab.
2) In the screengrab options menu choose Grab Single Window, and then in the timer box choose something like 45 seconds.
3) Hit OK and you'll be given a little window with a set of crosshairs in it. Make sure you can see both that and the TS2 window, and drag the crosshairs onto the game window.
4) Hit Tab in TS2 to enter camera view. Use the up and down arrows to zoom, left and right arrows to pan, and Q and E to lower and raise elevation. Once you have the view you like, just leave it until GIMP's timer counts down, and it'll take the picture.
5) Go back to GIMP and you'll have your TS2 screen as a big lovely GIMP image. Name and save in the appropriate file format.
Step 4 takes some practice. Just make sure you leave yourself enough time to set up the shot, and be patient waiting for the end of the timer.
That's different SimMegaptera, I didn't know Gimp took pictures, I've only used it to crop, correct mistakes and so on. But then I don't like window mode, hate it in fact, so I probably won't try that.
Thanks for that lipe. I've downloaded it now. I'll see how I like it.
@ purplegopher: You're screenshots look very nice. Just a tip; try pressing the - key when in camera mode to zoom out for the interior shots and for the front shot I'd recommend having a more 'eye-level' angle. These are just suggestions however, feel free to continue with similar camera angles etc. for the future rounds.
Yes, the price was intentional - I had to spend ages to find a $62 item to bring it up to that total!
Edited due to using a donation set staircase. Price still $59,999.
w_sims - nice entry (as everything you do ;)), but I'm almost sure these stairs are pay and according to the rules, they're not allowed.
And what about the items from Store? Are they disallowed too?
@Liv, good spot! I've had those stairs for so long I completely forget they were a donation gift! (I even had to look it up just now!) :faceslap:
I'll go and change them in-game and take some new screenshots. Typical, isn't it? I think it's the only content I have like that!
Welcome w_sims, I enjoyed your contest, hopefully you enjoy mine :)
tcbandie10, you should probably take advantage of the allowed 10 pics. It is your choice how many you post, up to 10, but the fewer the pics the less the judges see. You may not score as well. Also you must include a top down pic of each floor. Also, the application isn't scored, but the bay window on the second floor would lose you points. If it is three 1-tile windows to start with, then you must put three 1-tile windows in it's place.
Finally got my pics sorted! House has been done for days but I needed to clear up my hard drive a lot as I was running low on space (too much music oops!)
Anyhow, I stuck with the Tudor style as I probably won't keep it for any of the actual families. I then decided I'd decorate for a family consisting of parents that are very much knowledge asp and a teen daughter (15ish) who thinks her parents are kind of weird for not wanting to watch TV or play any games other than chess and don't get her started on the axe throwing or dare ask her about the handmade clothes her mum used to make her wear as a little girl! She finds it all so embarrassing! :lol:
Everyone's entries look amazing! So many different styles, the competition is going to be stiff.
I'm jealous of all the lovely CC you guys have. I re-installed Ts2 (base game and all the expansions) just for this contest because the first iteration of the contest looked like so much fun! Anyway, I haven't had Ts2 installed since Ts3 came out, and when I did have Ts2 I was a completely vanilla player.
I've downloaded a few objects and recolors, but most of the stuff I have is coming from either the base game or it's expansions. I don't even have any stuff packs.
I can't wait to see the next round of entries (not to mention any more for the application round)
Good luck to everyone and keep the creativity coming :DDDD
I have been working on my house for this, but the final spots are filling quickly, and I am having trouble figuring out how to get the screenshots. I took 'printscreen' and it gave me an image of my desktop instead of my sim house.
Anyways if I dont figure it out in time, I might play along at home. It seems to be great fun either way!
Croutonian, great to see you on the contestant side this time! Love your house, except that llama head would give me nightmares. :llama:
I felt the llama head suited the image I had of the parents, of course, it freaks their daughter out! The red eyes on it creep me out! :rofl:
As for blocking doors, I didn't see any reason we couldn't, they can still get in the rooms - don't even attempt to go through the blocked ones! I was inspired by a blocked door at my grandparent's house that has always intrigued me a bit :)
Well, wasn't that fun nerve-racking! I had spent a long weekend away from my computer and I come home to find there are only 3 spots left! I just spent the last 9 hours putting this house together. As I'm uploading it, I believe I'm the last, and I'm scared someone else is going to hit the 'Submit' button mere seconds before I do! I'm also feeling guilty that I'm going to do just that to someone else!
I'm pretty happy with how my house turned out, but I'd have liked to have more time decorating it. I'm also thinking this will be quite a challenge not to reuse all my same CC for each of the houses. This is just the type of creative challenge I'm looking for right now.
I'm envisioning this house for a slightly more well to do family (they have indoor plumbing!). In addition to the lower lever bathroom, there are wash basins and (working) chamber pots in both bedrooms. The fireplace works as a stove and the cabinet next to it is a fridge. They have a spare bedroom downstairs for overnight guests or perhaps an elderly relative. Someone in the house enjoys painting, (I think it's the oldest child, a teen girl), chess is a favorite between the father and the eldest son, and mother has both her own sewing machine and a spinning wheel. This family does not have a garden, nor spends much time outside - they are higher class than that.
I just don't think Strangtown is doable. There are only 3 empty houses, and even if we evicted people, the prices are kind of all over the place. There have to be 5 houses at least in the same price range to really make it work.
Round 1 will start tomorrow. I have mini feedback on your applications from 2 of the judges, when I have them all I will post it. If it's not up before I post the round 1 house, you can go ahead and redo it without seeing the feedback if you choose, but you will have 2 weeks so might not be a bad idea to see what the judges thought of your application ;)
I was looking at the Strangetown properties earlier and wondering if you could maybe make up the excess from the bin, even if they're not strictly ST looking lots (maybe just something odd/unique looking)?! I think it'd be a shame not to include ST as you could go really far out with the family descriptions and we could indulge our silly sides with making them over ;)
Reckon it could be just about possible...maybe?
If the prices vary a bunch, its harder to have a set of swappable family budgets. ;)
Don't forget that bin house with the red roof and pool in the middle! That is totally a Strangetown bin house. You could make the application house be one of the ones outside the normal budget. I think you could pull it off with some creative thinking. You can't let us down now!
To all contestants,
I've spend quite a lot of time looking at your entries and I have a few things I'd like to share.
:here: It's a lot easier when judging if all the images are posted in line using [IMG] Tags. (Using only attachments is fine if you are viewing that post from inside the entire thread but when you view that post on it's own using the table links Jones' initial post, it becomes a bit awkward to view the images.)
:here: Try meet MTS guidelines for your screenshots so that they are easier to view. (I noticed some people had floor plans, front images that were too far zoomed out or interior images zoomed in too far.
:here: For interior shots try pressing the minus key (-) a couple of times in cameraman mode to widen the angle of view. This I refer to zooming out so you can get a wider view which will show more of the room.
:here: Take a look at each of your screenshots before you upload them for blank spots. By this I mean to check if there are any huge patches of wall or floor inside that look a bit boring. The best way to tell if your house looks a bit empty is by trying to zoom out in your interior pics (refer to above comment) or by looking at your floor plan image/s and finding the empty floor spaces which could be put to effective use.
I think that's it for now (well at least what I thought might be most useful for everyone).
Thanks for taking time to read. By following these few points it should improve your future entries make it a touch easier on myself & the other judges.
Good luck to all of you and am looking forward to the first round! :)
Application Feedback
Judge 1: The front is very charming and inviting. Nicely decorated. I love the front yard. I'd do something more with the upstairs hall. I don't think that's the best place to paint - too dark. Perhaps make a mini study area.
Judge 2: Great decoration and use of outdoor space however the inside on the upper floor looks slightly under-furnished. (Additional note: I'm not sure if it was intentional but the ground floor wood tiles appear to have been rotated so that they don't line up effectively)
Judge 3: What I like is how you turned it from a more traditional house into a modern Victorian. Your exterior is interesting and I love your choice of windows and door and with the amazing mix of wall coverings you have used on the outside, you made this house interesting combined with the simple garden, although I would have expected to see more landscaping but not over the edge. I also expected you to take this exterior beauty into the interior. Your choice of wall in the interior is great but my only reservations were the floor tiles. The Black floor masked the beauty of your bedrooms and the wooden tile in the floor level were off because of its huge tiling . One with smaller tiling would have been lovely…..I love the bathroom
Judge 1: I like the master bedroom colors and paintings and I like the lighter Tudor exterior paint job. the yard needs more decorative landscaping - more scrubs or flowers perhaps
Judge 2: The colour choices are great and everything in each room matches, although there are a few blank spots inside and out that look a bit bare.
Judge 3: I am sure by now you would have known how to take your screen shots without the lines showing. What I like about your house is the modernization of a traditional house. The exterior walls are good but I would have changed the color of the roof. Your modern approach to the interior is good and I love the use of different colors in the furnishing especially in the bed rooms. My only reservations are the empty space on climbing up the stair. It would have looked better with a little deco. I would have expected more landscaping too
Judge 1: I like the flowers on the mantle and thnat you've utilized the upper hall. The house seems lonely - like only 1 person will ever be in it. I'd place another chair closer to the couch in the living area - a conversation place.
Judge 2: Love the black and purple style throughout! (It looks nice and contemporary.) The interior could do with a bit more thought with liveability, floor style choices. (eg. only one single bed for the entire house)
Judge 3: The pictures of the interior floor plan overhead shots and the exterior one have a very high angle and this makes it really hard to have a feel of the house. Having bigger and close up screen shots will be good since it makes things clearer. Also try turning the shadows option off in your graphics setting. For a change I love that you moved the kitchen to the top floor. I love that idea but I would think the telescope would have been better outdoors. I also think that one thing that can make a huge difference in your decorating is to pay attention to the colors you use. The colors in this house are a little dull and all the rooms tend to be the same wall and floor color. One way you can overcome this is to vary at least three different colors in a room.
Judge 1: I like the way you've extended the kitchen and utilized the dead space by the dining area window and filled it with flowers. the upstairs master bedroom - that's a differnt way to create a closet. I like the backyard flower fountain area. I'd like to see some flowers or decor on the dining table. and some more in the outdoors and perhjaps a counter sink in the downstairs bathroom - There is room for a shower also.
Judge 2: This is a very nicely decorated home suitable for a starting family. My only concern is a few overlapped, off grid, and angled objects. (eg. couch, mirror & sink in upstairs bath)
Judge 3: This is a very nice entry and with a nice exterior. I like how you combined the siding wall with the stucco on the front. The interior is pretty good, but I think there is some room for improvement. The landscaping is also really nice. I love the flower bed at the front and I love that you also had the kids in mind with that play area with the swing outdoor. I am not a fan of the wooden floor. Its tiling is too big and using a different color of floor for the bedrooms would have been lovely. I like the kitchen very much but for that wooden floor tile.
Judge 1: I really like the downstairs decor. It is invitingand comfortable looking. While I like the little fenced garden area in back, I'd like to see more landscaping on the rest of the grounds.
Judge 2: This house has great decoration, inside and out, with functionality in mind. It looks like your light distribution could be improved though. (eg. there are 2 lights in the tiny kitchen but only a tiny lamp in the huge living area & none in the dining area, unless of course I didn't see correctly)
Judge 3: I love your screen shots. It shows it all. I love the house, though I do not like the stone wall in the front, but combined with that wooden wall and the windows came out just fine. The interior is just amazing. I like the way you combined all your furnishing to give the interior a consistent look. I would have loved to see more landscaping
Judge 1: I like the exterior colors, That front garden is very cute, especially the Japanese stone lamp. I would expect a few more wallhangings/pictures, etc., in several of the rooms.
Judge 2: Decoration is consistent and nice to look at despite some cheaper furniture choices. The stain glass window doesn't really fit the theme the staircase has a nice open feel but looks like it would break in real life.
Judge 3: This is a really interesting redecoration that you did. I love and love that orange siding wall and I like your use of bright colors. The exterior is just awesome and what I like was you taking that outside beauty into the interior of the house. I particularly like the kitchen. The bright orange feel could easily be garnished anywhere and it just makes the kitchen and the rest of the house cool. I also like the color combination in the living room and I love how the orange color faded a little when you move from the floor level to the upper level. Those two bedrooms are lovely and the bathroom is one to die for. The landscaping is just simple and nice
Judge 1: nice screen shots of the interior. You've made the home seem cozy and inviting. I like the way you've tamed the Tudor exterior. It is pleasant to look at with the climbing vines. I'd like to see more with the landscaping. An attractive pond has floating plants and surrounding shrubbery perhaps a bench in the shade of that big tree.
Judge 2: The exterior looks very nice with a picture perfect front view. The interior just looks slightly bare. (If you look at the floor plan screen shots you'll notice there are a few blank spots)
Judge 3: The choice of brick wall combined with the paint and paste stucco with wood wall gave the exterior a nice image. I like the fact that you blended the terrain to match that of the surrounding. I would have loved to see more landscaping to compliment this great exterior look of the house. I like the decoration in the interior and I love the bedroom. Like the combination of the two wall papers used there. Though contrasting, they produced a welcome atmosphere in there. That little deco shelf under the stair with brick color compliments the dining and I like how the color flows into the kitchen and I love the kitchen
Judge 1: You've really captured the 'beachy' feel with your decor. I LOVE the pond! and where did you get your couch CC? I'd perhaps place a dining counter in the kitchen. The plans are too far away to see well. It looks like the upper hall is empty
Judge 2: antastic decoration inside and out with great use of space! (The pond especially tops it off.) Some interior screenshots show just a bit too much ceiling and the roof texture could have been changed to perhaps a light grey to match the beach theme.
Judge 3: The windows and door chosen for the house are a perfect complement to each other. At first I thought the exterior outdoor wall cover choice combination did not blend, but with that landscaping so good the beauty of the outdoor can well be seen. I love your interior but from the way you placed the dining there will be a problem for the sims to use the chair at the inner wall
Judge 1: I like your little Pets area in the upper halway. The boys room seems very appealing to children... I'd place some barrier plants around the dining area so it's not right out in the open, exposed to wind and the neighbors.... unless of course, you want to invite the neighbors. ;)
Judge 2: The interior styling is very nice and have kept in minds the functionality for a family. The exterior however could do with a bit more street appeal. (eg. there are a few mis-matched items such as the staircase)
Judge 3: I love the siding on this house. The green siding is very creative and makes the house stand out. The contrast between it and the siding at the top and foundation is also interesting. Your choice of door and window are interesting and go well with the house. I would recommend more landscaping.
Judge 1: It's an interesting color scheme downstairs. I like your yellow couch. I like the play area in the girls room. the spoiler is written this way: [ spoiler ] images go here [ /spoiler ] minus the spaces.
Judge 2: The exterior on this house looks great! However there is no pic of the master bedroom and all exterior + floor plan shots need improvement.
Judge 3: One small issue that can sometimes cause a lot of problem is that the pictures on this entry are really small in size, and it makes it hard for me to clearly see everything clearly. For instance, I cannot make out what you have in the adjacent room to the kids room on the top floor. I would suggest to take better and bigger pictures. Apart from this the children room looks nice and I like that you considered they need to plane fun as well and so you planed the room for this
Judge 1: surprisingly modern exterior. I like the kitchen to dining area tile segway. The interior is nicely decorated with a consistent color scheme. I'd like to see more landscaping. There are many things you could do in the yard space that goes well with a modern theme.
Judge 2: Extremely nice modern styling & functionality inside and out! The landscaping just looks slightly bare (perhaps some trees or shrubs surrounding the house seeing you had plenty of cash left to spare. Any leftover cash can always go to landscaping or decorating.)
Judge 3: This is another blending of the lot to the surrounding terrain. Love the exterior of the building and the choice of windows used. I like your interior and particularly the flow of the color combination of your furnishings. Your choice of modernity was plain and lovely and the wall and floor tiles combination was good. I love the feel of the floor level especially the sitting area and liked the transition of the wooden tiles into the dining and kitchen tile. Just more landscaping would be nice
Judge 1: I like the exterior facade color scheme with the ivy, very attractive. The interior decor is very attractive and upscale. I'd like to see more landscaping. It is barren away from the house.
Judge 2: Interior and exterior styling looks very very nice on this house with realistic furnishings. Only thing missing here is a bit more landscaping. (What you already have is great, I would just like to see a bit more of it.)
Judge 3: I love the combinations of colors and wall for the exterior of the house. I could hear my head shouting modern Victorian. I love the furnishings and how you combined them to give a lasting memory to the mind. I really like the teen room. My suggestion is more landscaping.
Judge 1: I like the terracota color scheme. The outdoor fire and the wine glasses are a nice touch. I'd like to see some kind of half wall around the outdoor dining area or perhaps a trellis shade structure of some sort.
Judge 2: The styling inside and out is very nice whilst keeping with the theme. The inside could do with some additional furniture or decorations which the extra cash you had left over could have been used on.
Judge 3: I like the blend between the milky color of the exterior with the door and window. I am really not a fan of that window with shutter for this house. I think the landscaping needs some work too. I like the spacing in the interior combined with the decorations but there are still empty spaces that could do with some furnishing while still maintaining the need for movement space for the Sims (you still have more than 8,000 to spend). I like that you tried to maintain the same color from the outside for the indoor it would have looked nicer combined with other colors.
Judge 1: I like your little garden in back and the burnt-orange paint. The front landscaping is nice too. I'd like to see something more in the upstairs hall. I'd like to see you extend your landscaping into the outer areas of the lot.
Judge 2: Very nice decorating throughout with well finished landscaping. The landing area upstairs looks a bit empty and bathroom tiles don't quite match the rest of the house.
Judge 3: I love the orange color of the wall and combined with another color would have been really good. I love your choice of window. Though the choice of door is good, the color is off with the windows. I like your interior and I like the consistency in blend of colors between the walls, floor and the furnishings. Using the (-) key to zoom out to have a wider area captured for the interior image would be good. The landscaping is okay but I would like to see more effort into it like the rest of the interior.
Judge 1: the open under stairway opens the whole area nicely. I like the excercise area upstairs. Good use of that space. The color scheme is pleasant. While I like your kitchen CC, I think you need some counter space next to the sink and stove . It would be very difficult to cook in that kitchen because there is no prep area and no place to dump 'Oops! HOT HOT' stuff onto a hotplate.
Judge 2: The build item choices for the exterior work perfectly together and the interior decorating is a job well done! My only problem is there's nothing too interesting outside to do or to look at.
Judge 3: Apart from the landscaping, I simply love this house. I like the flow of the decoration and furnishing from the ground floor to the bedrooms. I love the little fitness area and so much like the children bedroom. The choice of door, window and wall paints is just a breath of fresh air.
Judge 1: I really like your interior CC and colorscheme. Very nice. and that llama head over the mantle Too funny! I would like to see more landscaping in the yard, perhaps a somewhat secluded or protected dining area rather than right out in the open.
Judge 2: The styling for the interior and exterior look very nice with functionality. I'm just concerned about doors you've blocked off. (I can understand why you've blocked them off, however seeing they are part of the house you should try and use them. It's part of the challenge in my opinion.)
Judge 3: Love the exterior look of the house. The brick base foundation adds a little flavor to it. Though the landscaping seems okay a little more effort in landscaping would be nice. I like the study and especially the teen room. Just a close resemblance to my coz room. The area at the top of the stair could have been good with a little deco there
Judge 1: I like the exterior color scheme and the little fenced walkway. The living room has a nice color scheme. I think you could add somethign to the upstairs hall to better utilize the space. While the little fenced garden area next to the house is very cute, I'd like to see you extend that to the out perimeter of the yard.
Judge 2: A very interesting decorating job both inside and out. (I like what you've done with the random flower choices and a neat little path). The main bedroom just looks a little boring and the sky doesn't set the friendliest of moods.
Judge 3: I really like the exterior. The house exterior is broken up in an interesting manner by the different types of walls used and it has this appeal consistent with modern style. I think the combination of the wall covers would have looked nicer if they run vertical. I love the little landscaping of the flowers going round the house. I love the black color of the windows and the swing Victorian door. My only concern was the bay window at the top. It would have looked lovelier with same color with others. While the interior is nice (I especially like the mirror floor), it definitely adds something to the dining room and kitchen area and gives the house personality I still think the inner walls could use a bit of wall paintings. I would suggest making full use of the 10 images you can show. It will go a long way to show more of your work and having a closer overhead shot would be nice.
Judge 1: I really like the way you've sheltered your outdoor dining area. It gives it some sense of privacy while still being open. I appreciate the 'breakfast' room but I think it's a mistake to remove the downstairs restroom. I'd like to see more pictures on the wall or some kind of decor.
Judge 2: A nicely decorated home with plenty of usable spaces. (Including a pool area!). For only a 2 bedroom house I probably would have avoided having two dining rooms and putting that extra room to better use.
Judge 3: I think you did a great job decorating the interior. The house looks airy and cozy and has a specific style though out the indoor. I think varying the floor tiles in each room would be great. I particularly like the teen and baby room. The outside is quite good and I liked how you combined the siding wall and stone wall. Your choice of door and window are nice, but would have been better without the little medieval one. Landscaping is good but could do with more.
Judge 1: I really like your internal decor andcolor scheme. Very pleasing to the eye. I would like to see more landscaping throughout the yard.
Judge 2: Nice decoration style with an interesting garden! You won't be penalized for not using the extra §10,000 but you might lose points if that money isn't put to good use. (If you've finished off your house with cash left over, there's always places where it can be spent such as additional landscaping.
Judge 3: I simply like everything about the exterior of your building. Your choice of wall, door and window are just good. For the exterior more landscaping will do. I like the style of your interior decoration and like the blend in the mix match of colors because it makes it eye catchy. I love the two bedrooms and I would recommend having the top down view of the floor image taken with the walls up
Judge 1: the medieval decor is very well done. I like the way you turned the fireplace into the kitchen stove. I understand that your wealthy medieval sims don't spend much time outdoors but I think there would have been a herb garden or a groundskeeper to maintain the place if they were wealthy. Perhaps with a little, 1 room groundskeeper hut in the rear of the lot. :) (I know, she said you could not build more living areas, but in general...)
Judge 2: Superb decorating and interesting use of space. (I particularly like the attention to detail such as the ceiling tile choice and room arrangements). The kitchen looks just a touch small for great functionality and this is just a personal pick but I wouldn't usually put two singles next to each other.
Judge 3: Simply traditional throughout and I like the consistency with the decoration. Love the choice of fire place and the arrangement style. I like the simple exterior and would like to see more landscaping.
And the lot for Round 1...is 45 Bard Boulevard. Round 1 will end Friday April 5th at 11:59:59 PM EST.
That house is kinda pricey, Phae. I think I can figure something out for Strangetown, it's just a very intimidating 'hood ;)
Do all of our lots all have to match - so they look like they all fit seamless into the same neighbourhood - or can we try renovating each of the houses in its own style? For example, could we make one medieval, one super-modern, one tropical etc?
Also, do archways have to stay as archways? (i.e. we can't swap them for doors - I'm assuming we can't, but just want to double check!)
Actually w_sims, you can swap doors for archways and vice versa as long as they are the same amount of tiles. And heavens no, they don't have to match ;) If you give the families what they want, they probably shouldn't all match.
Yah feedback!
Not sure what judge 2 means by rotated, the wood flooring is all facing the same way, it's just designed like that. Point noted about smaller tile. I wasn't happy with that floor and downloaded more later, but I had to work with what I had as I was in a hurry to get it up.
Took me awhile to realize what judge 3 meant by black floor tile. That is a grey carpet with a paler grey leaf design through it. It’s really quite pretty but it does look a bit dark in the shots.
Thanks for the feedback. :)
To all contestants,
I've spend quite a lot of time looking at your entries and I have a few things I'd like to share.
Was actually about pointing these out. Am so happy you already did it.
[B] :here: For interior shots try pressing the minus key (-) a couple of times in cameraman mode to widen the angle of view. This I refer to zooming out so you can get a wider view which will show more of the room.
You can also use the (X) key both does the same thing.
:alarm: One more thing I just remembered is we are all so happy putting so much attention into making over the house :gjob: that we forget that the outdoor (landscaping) is also part of the make over :rofl: It would be nice to see lovely landscaping :) .
:cool: Really looking forward to having fun in the first round and I wish you all the best of luck
I really wanted to do more landscaping, but ran out of money - that medieval furniture is quite pricey! :lol:
Jo, I think what was meant by the rotated flooring is that the wood planks don't match up to make longer ones - I've noticed it with some wooden floors when I've gone to lay them and accidentally pressed < or > and rotated the tile by 45 degrees, I think that flooring is meant to flow horizontally instead of vertically - have a play with rotating it while you're working on the new house to see what we mean :)
Oh, and feedback appreciated, judges :)
I ran out of money for landscaping too :lol: It's not my strength anyway but I will definitely try harder next time :) Feedback very much appreciated judges!
Another note:
If you have run out of money and your yard could do with a bit more landscape work, instead of just leaving it semi-complete, it's probably worth spending just a bit of extra time making compromises to evenly distribute your decorating items.
The landscape is an important aspect and appears to have been a concern from myself & other judges.
Also, if you do have over §1,000, I'm more than certain there will be an effective way to spend it :)
To those with no money to landscape (myself included), don't forget terrain paint is free!
jones, I have some questions that are a tad specific to my medieval makeovers, can I swap out the modern fireplaces for my cooking hearths without loosing points? Even if they are different amounts of tiles? The one I used here is a single tile, but I put it in the center of the two and added fireplace deco around it so as to not give myself extra tiles. I have a lovely 3 tile hearth as well I'd like to use. As long as I don't move the chimney stack, can I use these instead regardless of tile length? Secondly, will I get docked for not having indoor plumbing? I'm pretty sure I'm going to run across at least one family or two of peasants and I have some lovely outhouses I'd like to use (they are stand alone, so I don't have to build walls). Will this be ok? I could have sworn I had another question saved up, but I can't remember it now. Oh well. >.< Thanks!
Phae, I'd say yes to the outhouse. As long as you have everything a sim needs for motives, I don't see that it would be a problem :) And yes, to the fireplace, as long as the chimney stack is in the same position since it really just the facade that is bigger.
Thank you jones! I was really concerned about those few things.
I haven't looked at the house yet, but I was wondering, how many points will it cost (per judge) to add a single foundation square, a back door, and a stairs to the ground? When your sim's gotta go, they gotta go, and front doors tend to be very far from outhouses! btw, I learned my lesson last time, I'll ask specifics so I don't look like I'm bending your rules about knocking down walls and such :p
This house has a small back entrance exactly like you described, Phae! You're safe for this round! :p
justJones
22nd Mar 2013, 6:33 PM
This one does have just what you described, but for future reference, you only lose structural points once, not from each judge. So to do what you described would cost you 5 pts. 2 for the foundation, 1 for the door and 2 for the stairs. Also thanks for asking this because it reminded me that stairs were in the rules, but not addressed in the scoring ;) I had meant to add them in the scoring a while ago, but forgot.
Thank you both w_sims and jones! I will keep that in mind for future houses. I'm glad this one won't be costing me those points at least, loosing points early is hard to recover from!
Jo, I think what was meant by the rotated flooring is that the wood planks don't match up to make longer ones - I've noticed it with some wooden floors when I've gone to lay them and accidentally pressed < or > and rotated the tile by 45 degrees, I think that flooring is meant to flow horizontally instead of vertically - have a play with rotating it while you're working on the new house to see what we mean
Croutonian, I know all about the < > keys for rotating, :) but I don't think that would have made a difference as I think I tried the floor both horizontally and vertically. The planks are just designed to sit miss matched, but I'll go check it though as my memory is worse than a sieve. I know when I was looking for a wooden floor I wasn't happy with any I had, realized quite a few were old and decided I needed some more better made wooden floors. (Hope that doesn't sound snippy/formal, I don't know what else to call you-added a smilie face just in case!)
I forgot to say above, that judge 3 said they expected to see more landscaping, and I wanted to know where? If I'd had more money I would have put a carport over the driveway and done a little more over on the front right but the rest of the yard was landscaped. I left ten thousand for the landscaping but that's a large yard.
