Official MTS Sim Contest (TS3): Cultural Diversity

Over the last three months MTS has been asking our many talented creators and coders to show us something from different cultures around the world that interest and inspire them. Well now the photographers, story tellers and contest fans among you will get your turn! :) This isn’t a beauty contest or a fashion contest: we want you to make a sim to represent a country of your choice then use that sim to teach us a little something about that country and the people that inhabit it.

General Rules

1. You may only enter a category one time but may enter 2 separate categories as long as two separate sims are used.
2. Only 20 entrants per category. Please no place holders. Each spot is only filled once the 3 pictures and required text has been submitted.
3. Free CC is allowed. As is store content, Dr Pepper items etc.
4. No Pay CC. If anyone is notified that they have used pay content, their entries will be disqualified. The spots they had will NOT be held.
5. When posting your entry, please make sure to include the category it belongs to.
6. Your own original work only, please. Entries found to belong to someone else or that have been posted previously will be disqualified. You may use a sim that you have previously uploaded to MTS but not one that has previously been entered into a contest.
7. Once your post has been added to the table, it may not be changed. You may not submit a place-holder, your submission is final. You may not delete it and enter a new category instead, etc. If you choose to delete your entry, you are removing yourself from the contest and no further entries will be permitted from you.
8. Teen – Elder sims only.
9. No supernatural species, human sims only.
10. Any entries that violate site rules or do not belong to the poster will be deleted and will result in the poster being disqualified.

Picture Rules

1. Pictures must be between 800px (width) x 600px (height) and 1200px (width) x 1064px (height) with a maximum file size of 250kb.
2. No more than three pictures per entry. These must consist of a headshot, full body shot and a creative shot as detailed below.
3. The following photo editing is permitted (but not mandatory) and if used, should not cover or otherwise obstruct the view of the sim: Adding a border
Adding text
Adding a flag
5. No photo editing other than that specified above.

Duration/Time Period

The contest begins April 2nd, as soon as this is posted. Contestants will have until April 30th to post pictures. However, if a category fills up before that date, that category will be closed to new entries so that it can be judged. We will try to have the contest judged by mid May but depending on the number of entries and availability of judges we might have to be flexible with the judging timeline.

-Timer- (http://www.timeanddate.com/countdown/generic?iso=20130430T235959&p0=1890&msg=MTS+Sim+contest%3A+Cultural+Diversity&csz=1)

Each category is one of six inhabited continents so if the country you chose to represent is in Asia, then that’s the category you enter. If the country you chose has land that spans two continental boundaries (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_transcontinental_countries) then it’s up to you to decide which side you’re representing.

Asia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_sovereign_states_and_dependent_territories_in_Asia)
North America (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_North_American_countries)
South America (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_sovereign_states_and_dependent_territories_in_South_America)
Africa (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_sovereign_states_and_dependent_territories_in_Africa)
Europe (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_sovereign_states_and_dependent_territories_in_Europe)
Oceania (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Oceanian_countries_and_territories)

Entry Requirements

We want you to make a sim to represent a country you have chosen from one of the categories then use your sim to teach us something about that country. Remember this is about cultural diversity so if you chose to focus on Scotland for example, don’t feel you have to make a red head in a tartan kilt clutching a bottle of whiskey ;) Do try to represent your chosen country appropriately though e.g. you probably wouldn’t find many (or any) women in miniskirts, fish-nets and boob tubes in Afghanistan!

Please provide the following pics:
1 x head shot (from shoulders or above) on a light, neutral background.
1 x Full body shot on a neutral background.
1 x Point of Interest shot. This should illustrate what you have written in the "point of interest" section below. It should be something (anything) that you think is an interesting fact about your chosen country, its people and/or its culture. You have one whole picture to illustrate your point of interest but it could be something the sim is wearing, doing, watching, eating etc. As long as the sim is in the picture and your CC is free, the rest is up to you :)

Please also include this information with your entry:

Sim’s name:
Country and continent the sim represents:
A short paragraph or two to explain the point of interest you chose to illustrate for your country of choice: (This text should be an explanation of the “Point of Interest” shot mentioned above). This should be something that’s relative today so if it’s an historical fact then you should explain why it still holds importance to your country of choice in today’s world.

The “Point of Interest” about your chosen country needs to be something you can illustrate with your sim. If you can’t think of anything you could try one of the following suggestions:
Biggest/most well known export.
A common past time or popular sport.
A belief or superstition commonly held in your country of choice.
A tradition commonly performed/maintained in your country of choice.
An historical moment that still holds importance to the people in your country of choice. (This one may require an explanation of why it’s important).
Feel free to tell us a little more about your sim and/or your country of choice if you wish but it’s not mandatory.

Judging will be done by a panel of MTS Staff. Judging will be vote based rather than score based but the following criteria will be taken into account:

The sim: Originality of the sim and how well their appearance (including outfit) represent your country of choice. (Google, wiki etc may be used to roughly gauge the accuracy here – we’re not all experts on every country around the world ;) )
Point of Interest: Is the point of interest text and image actually interesting and informative? Did we learn something or have the opportunity to appreciate a particular aspect of a culture?
Technical Stuff: Were the rules followed? Were the images clear, well lit etc?

As always, each contest winner receives a blue ribbon to go under their username.
The light bulb trophy showcased in the news post (http://www.modthesims.info/showthread.php?t=489993).
Additionally, winners will receive a purple winner's achievement sticker for their profile. And all entrants will receive a red participation sticker as well.

Chat Thread
If you don’t get a spot in your category, or want to post for more than the allowed amount of pictures or categories, or just want to chat about the entries, please post in our chat threads (http://www.modthesims.info/showthread.php?t=500265).

Q. I’m not sure what countries are in each continent.
A. The categories section at the top of the page has links to wiki pages that list all of the sovereign states and territories within each continent. If it has a flag on one of those pages you can use it ;)

Q. How many times can I enter?
A. Twice but you must enter a different sim and a different continent each time. You can also only win once.

Q. How do I actually enter the contest?
A. Make a sim to represent a country from one of the listed continents. Take the 3 required pics and provide the required written information. It can be a sim you've had lying around for a while but should not be one that you've previously entered into a contest and must be a sim you created yourself. You cannot reserve a spot and all submissions are final. Please do not post, “I’ll enter! Oh my gosh I have the perfect sim!!1!” type posts in this thread.

Q. How do I upload pictures?
1. First make sure your pictures are between 800px (width) x 600px (height) and 1200px (width) x 1064px (height) with a maximum filesize of 250kb. If the original screenshot is too small, be wary of making it larger due to crunchy/blurry pictures.
2. Upload the picture to any image host - Tinypic (http://www.tinypic.com), Photobucket (http://www.photobucket.com), Flickr (http://www.flickr.com), or ModYourPanties (http://www.modyourpanties.com)
3. Start a new post on this thread - click Go Advanced, and you can click the little "Insert Image" icon in the toolbar, or just copy-paste the image location into some [ img ] tags. Make sure to include which category your entry is for.
4. Submit your post - doing so will submit your entry. Do not edit or change your entry once it has been submitted.

Q. But there are 5/6 continents, not 7 altogether.
A. Some regions of the world prefer to group more continents together than others. We’re using this model simply because it gives a good variety of categories for you to choose from :)

Q. Can I choose a minority or sub-culture within a country as my representative sim?
A. Yes. Where there is an established sub-culture or minority community I have no objection to you representing their country from their own culture’s view point. Please make it clear if that’s your intention for the judge’s sake. On the other hand, some countries (e.g. N Korea) are more ethnically and culturally homogeneous so don’t just pluck a minority culture out of thin air; your sim should represent a sub culture that actually exists in your chosen country.

3rd Apr 2013, 5:01 PM
As there are many different sub-cultures with in the US, is ok to not represent the US as a whole, but, let's say Cajuns? Actually I guess this applies to most counties, like the German settlements in Brazil (which I think is a very interesting part of Brazilian history/culture). So my question is valid for more than just the US. Also, are real people allowed?

3rd Apr 2013, 5:11 PM
Seems very interesting contest!

May I check-in first? I only have time on weekends to do the entry.

4th Apr 2013, 8:16 AM
@Jones7659 – Going with your example of America, you couldn’t really say there’s such a thing as a typical or normal American because there’s just so much diversity. So yes, it’s perfectly fine for you to choose America as your country of choice while focusing on a particular culture within that country. That goes for the point of interest too; you could illustrate something that’s specific to Cajun culture rather than American culture as a whole though it would be helpful for the judges if you mentioned in the point of interest text what sub-culture you’re portraying. Obviously this goes for all countries, not just America.

I don’t see any reason why you couldn’t use a sim based on a real person as long as it’s one you’ve made yourself and not previously entered in a contest.

BloodyScholastic – People have a tendency to sign up for contests then forget to actually finish their entry. So to be fair to everyone, we’re not accepting place-holders. Entries are accepted only when they fulfil everything listed in the “entry requirements” section in the first post.

4th Apr 2013, 12:42 PM
Oops, I didn't notice 'no place-holder' rule at top page. Okay, fair enough :) I have a question. Do paragraphs with very long words to explain the "point of interest" allowed? As your rule says "A short paragraph or two to explain the point of interest". How long the limit words permitted? I have so much explanation story about traditional customs, cultures and historical facts on a Sim I represented. If I submit 3 pics of Sim with long story, is that allowed?

4th Apr 2013, 8:30 PM
Question: Is there a problem with representing a non-national culture, such as the Khoisan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Khoisan), a Native American group, or one of the Chinese ethnic minorities?

4th Apr 2013, 10:55 PM
I saw something on the homepage that made me think this was closed. It says the "Cultural Diversity Create Competition is officially closed". But I see from the dates this is open.. I dunno, this is confusing. Anyway I JUST Discovered the competitions on MTS. This seems like fun. Hopefully I can get something made before everything gets closed.

Are Competitions a regular event, meaning, like a monthly thing or some such?

EDIT: Sorry, this probably should have gone in that "chat" thread. My mistake. I will remember for future competitions. :)

The baro't saya is a traditional Filipino blouse and skirt ensemble. It originated in Spanish times, when native Philippine women were required to cover their upper torso. Throughout Spanish colonization this was the everyday attire of most Philippine women.

@BloodyScholastic: We hadn’t intended on being too strict about a word count limit, that’s why we just said one or two short paragraphs but please try to bear in mind that the judges will have to read these entries. There is potential for 120 entries. I doubt we’ll reach 120 but if we do, I don’t imagine the judges will have the time to read through 120 6 page essays ;) Try to keep it below 300 words which roughly equates to two short paragraphs in my opinion. Remember, you don’t have to explain everything about your chosen country, you just have to explain one thing!

@Jaina_sticks: I already answered a very similar question just two posts up from yours :) I’ll add a note about this to the FAQs.

@chaoticMoira: The Cultural Diversity Create Competition is closed. That was a competition for those who upload custom content to the site. As the news post ( http://www.modthesims.info/showthread.php?t=500271&goto=lastpost) says, this contest is a sim/photography contest with the same theme. It's just for pictures, not uploads. The first post explains the requirements as well as the duration and end date of this contest. This thread (http://www.modthesims.info/showthread.php?t=489993) will help explain a little more about what we’re trying to do with competitions in general. Hopefully these will be a regular thing if the interest is there for them but qualified users can also host contests and do so from time to time. There are plenty of old contests in the contest forum if you’re interested in finding out what sorts of things are run here. :)

5th Apr 2013, 8:04 AM
RomerJon, glad to see our first International sim but unfortunately one picture is an incomplete entry and as stated already, we’re not accepting place-holders. This won’t be added to the table (and shouldn’t be submitted) until it’s complete, as stated in the rules, but as it’s the first one I’ll give you 24 hours to make the necessary changes. :) If it’s not complete by then I’ll have to remove the post. The entry requirements and rules are listed in the main post.

Sims Name: Carmen Rodríguez
Country - Mexico
Continent - North America
Age: Young Adult

Day of the dead, (or " Día de Muertos") is a Mexican holiday celebrated throughout Mexico and around the world in other cultures. The holiday focuses on bringing families together to pray and remember family members or friends that have died. The celebration takes place on November 1 and 2, in connection with the Catholic holidays of All Saints' Day and All Souls' Day. Flowers, including Mexican marigolds, are often used in the celebration of the Day of the Dead. Women often wear black clothes & white face paint on Dia de muertos.

Here is Hatsune Miku.
If you know anything there is to know about Japanese pop culture or music, you know that Hatsune Miku is on the top when it comes to music. Her voice is made by the software Vocaloid, and there are other singers like her, including Menguire Luka, and Kagaime Rin and Len. She goes on tour, but she is not a real person. How? The put up a screen and project a 3D model of her.

This is the sim I made.

What's her name?
Kaede Takama

Where is she from?
She is from Japan, in Asia.

How old is she?
She's a young adult.

Japan is the land of geishas, kimonos and sushi. The thing that I wanted to talk about was the kimono. The name means, in fact, "a thing to wear". It can be anything from one-coloured, to themed ones with cranes or sunsets. It is often seen as a piece of art and they are very expensive.

Name: Éme Gaillard
Country: France
Continent: Europe
Age: YA

Meet Éme, a young man pretentious enough to piss off the average hipster.

What do you know about fashion? ... according to Éme, absolutely nothing. Your taste in music is pathetic. Your sense of style is non-existent. Your hair is ... well, you can't help your hair, you got a bad draw on ancestors. And there isn't enough makeup on the planet to help your face. Poor, unfortunate you!

Éme is obnoxious, caustic, self-centered and self-assured. Only one thing brings him to silence, even to tears: watching incredibly obscure movies from the avant-garde film movement.

"Avant-garde/experimental" films were born of a movement that stood in direct opposition to traditional filmmaking. Techniques often used included absence of standard narrative, lack of sound/soundtrack, and deliberate defacement of the movie's film. These methods are meant to put the viewer into a contemplative mood as they are obliged to watch the film without any pre-conceptions as to how it may progress or ultimately end. In the case of Éme, this sort of cinema serves a much more useful purpose: it shuts him the hell up.

Feel free to watch a movie with him--he won't say a word. Just make sure you leave before he begins explaining it to you.

Name: Mina Montayo
Country: Brazil
Age: YA

In Brazil, they celebrate the famous carnival in which is an annual festival held during the Friday to the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday, which marks the beginning of Lent, the forty-day period before Easter. The Carnival is the most famous holiday in Brazil and has become an event of huge proportions. Except the industries, malls and the carnival related workers, the country stops completely for almost a week and festivities are intense, day and night, mainly in coastal cities. Rio de Janeiro's carnival alone drew 4.9 million people in 2011, with 400,000 being foreigners.

And this carnival is one of the most feathery and colorful you would ever see xD
Mina is one of the carnival's show girl and a dancer

BTW. I talked to a moderator to see if the custom was acceptable, and it was :)

Hope you guys like :jest:

Top o' the mornin', MTS! Please meet Colleen.

Name: Colleen O'Reilly
Country: Ireland
Continent: Europe
Age: young adult

Point of interest: Trad night is short for traditional music night. It is common for both local and urban Irish pubs to host these informal events, also known as pub sessions.
A pub session (seisiún in Gaelic) refers to playing traditional Irish music and singing in the relaxed social setting of a pub, in which the music-making is intermingled with conversation and the consumption of ale, stout, and beer.
Performers sing and play popular, traditional Irish songs and use instruments such as the fiddle, accordion, concertina, flute, Uilleann pipes (complex bagpipes), banjo, guitar, mandolin, bodhrán, and harp.
Wherever in Ireland there is a trad night at a pub, there is sure to be fun, fellowship, and laughs (or craic, as the Irish might say).

(I will gladly post CC used in making this Sim over in the chat thread)

Country and continent: The Netherlands, Europe

Point of interest: Vincent van Gogh, Adriaan van Ostade and Rembrandt van Rijn are just few of the many amazing artists living in the Netherlands. Not only that, but there are also many art galleries in the Netherlands as well! Many people in the Netherlands also work as artists, and the beautiful scenery in the Netherlands makes great inspiration for painting.

Sim's name: Indriyana Citra Liliasari

Country: Indonesia

Continent: Asia

Age: Young Adult

Point of interests:
Right on April 21st, Indonesians celebrate Kartini's Day; a day to remind a female national heroine who has brought native women to take further education and obtain rights as men do when Indonesia continent was part of Dutch colonization. This special day celebrated by women and men in all provinces wearing traditional clothing (predominantly kebaya for women, koko for men, usually with batik pattern) to represent each province.

Indriyana, wearing blue kebaya, performs Jaipong dance in national art and culture gallery. Jaipong, is a musical performance genre of the Sundanese people in West Java. There was a ban on western music in 1961, in thought of western music would bring bad influences to young generations. With the ban, government told the public to return and revive music from the past. The creator of Jaipong music, created a genre of music that would revive the musical interests of the past and added sexual undertones and a sense of elegance. Jaipong gained popularity instantly because it was a completely non-western form of music that the government accepted and promoted to be taught to people of all generations. It had all values of traditional Sundanese music to appeal the older generations, that also had energy, vibrancy, and sexuality to appeal younger generations. The sexual nature of the songs was taken from the idea of prostitution, and was then elevated in order to make it a more elegant, civilized part of art. This broke gender barriers because it changed the way in which men and women interacted. Jaipong was also based on the life of the lower class and elevated their stories and struggles. Jaipong allowed people to see themselves in the music and feel as if they were a part of their culture.

Name of my Sim: Charlotte Smith
Age: Young Adult
Country, Continent: England/the UK, Europe

The UK's history and culture is riddled with fascinating figures, mysteries, legends and myths that I'm sure you'd love to hear about. However, I won't be larking on about any of that twoddle today because I'd like to tell you about the UK as it stands today. There's no point living in the past, s'what I say!
Some people (including those who actually live in the bloody country) get a bit confused by the differences between the UK, Britain and Great Britain. To clarify, the UK is made up of England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland; Britain is only England and Wales and Great Britain is made by England, Wales and Scotland.
(Although personally I don't think there's anything so great about Scotland that calls for it to actually add 'Great' to the name of any bloody nation it decides to join the party with...)
^ A typical girls secondary school uniform, perhaps she might be wearing the tie and shirt a bit more loose than the teachers might like, but hey-ho.. ^
The school system in the UK is very different to that of a country such as the US, children start at the age of 4 in nursery and move onto reception a year later. Reception is the start of primary education, and from reception they move up to Year 1 and leave for secondary school at the end of Year 6. Secondary school starts in Year 7 and ends at the age of 16 in Year 11 where they can choose to go onto Sixth Form, which is Years 12-13.
:!!: Fun Fact: It's not a typically British name, but Mohammed (with all the different spellings of it added up) is actually one of the most, if not the most popular boy names in the UK currently. Although Harry, Jack and Oliver are also top names. :!!:
Cheerio!

The hula began as a way to worship the gods, most notably, Pele. In Polynesian mythology, Pele is the goddess of fire, lightning, wind, and volcanoes.
In olden days, the hula was danced only by men, but after the Westernization of Hawaii, the hula has been performed by both men and women.
Today, the hula dance has two different versions: hula kahiko (the ancient hula) and the hula ‘auana (the modern hula).
Hula kahiko is an energetic hula dance that is accompanied not by music, but only by chants and percussion instruments (such as seed-filled gourds and bamboo sticks, pahu drums, and rock castanets).
The modern hula ‘auana features graceful movements, and it is often accompanied by ukulele and steel guitar music.

^[pictured above, center] Leilani is a native to the Aloha State, and she grew up in a family that was well-steeped in Polynesian tradition.
Learning to hula at the age of 4, she has had a few decades to perfect the fluidity of her motions.
Leilani's career relies upon the island's tourism industry: She gracefully dances hula along the beachfront of a grand resort.
She encourages the tourists and local islanders to learn about the ancient, rhythmic storytelling and join her.
Her wavelike displays of tropical dance can be seen near the hotel's beachfront bar area, Thursday - Sunday, 10 AM - 8 PM, even hours on the hour.*
*If the weather is inclement, Leilani hula dances inside the hotel lobby.

And on an interesting cultural diversity sidenote, one unique aspect of Hawaii’s demography is that no one ethnic group makes up the majority of the state’s population. Over a third of the island residents, in fact, are of mixed races.

(I will gladly list CC used in creating this Sim over in the chat thread)

i've got a q: does era matter or does the sim have to be from the 21st century? there's a nationality i'd like to use but their culture greatly changes in such a short time-span (as in they're one thing in 1888 and another in 1988).

Sorry guys. missroxor is away but well and I've rather neglected the thread. I'll read through all of them tomorrow and get back to anyone I need to. Thanks for being patient!

I'm getting to all the entries now and working on the table. I'll try to answers any questions I see.

Great entries, everyone! :)

Now time for the goofy question of the day: If a pay hair has a retexture and the retexture is a free download, is that free retexture hair acceptable for CC?

The original object/hair needs to be free for it to be considered a free item, same as with the upload policy. Hair retextures of pay items, TSR Featured Artist objects, etc are all considered pay items.

Dude, you have pay cc. That sucks for you, you should be disqualifed soon... :alarm: :alarm: :alarm: :!: :!: :!:
EDIT: This is about the french girly.

What French girl? We have a French guy. And lots of girls, some from Europe but no French girls.

Name: Efia Omehia
Country: Ghana
Continent: Africa
Age: YA

It is my pleasure to introduce you to Efia Omehia.

Efia's name means "born on a Friday." She was, in fact, born on a Friday, 22 years ago. Although she is the younger of her parents' two children, she is rather taller than her brother, or even her parents themselves. Her height, and her smile, easily secured her a job as a model for a European clothing line. Her lovely figure, plastered all over storefront windows, has persuaded more than one woman to buy African haute couture--which is an awful lot like international haute couture, just rather more colorful!

Although she enjoys modeling and all of the attention and privilege that the position brings, Efia looks forward to the day that she will return to Ghana and begin her dream job--as a secondary school teacher.

In her home country, next to health care, schooling is a need that for so many children, goes unmet due to lack of available teachers. Efia's parents insisted on their children going to class daily and excelling at their work. While this preparation helped Efia and her brother Amuz get through college with ease, it also made Efia incredibly aware that she was very fortunate to have parents who wanted her to learn.

For now, she's still a model. But she longs for the day that she will have enough money to finish her master's degree, and be able to go home and help educate the next generation of future doctors and teachers.

Name: Elena Ivanovska
Age: Young adult
Country & Continent: Macedonia

Macedonia is a country of mixed culture and a part of me, literally. My paternal grandfather came from Macedonia. This is one of the reasons I chose to do a sim to represent that little country. Macedonia has had great impact on my life. I'm certain of that I'm going there one day.

So, I decided to do a sim that had the same name as me, Elena. Many of my relatives has that name.

Elena is a cute girl, named after her grandfather's mother. Her grandfather, though, went through alot. He has survived a war and many horrible things. She is very proud of him.

Her grandfather lived a poor life and wanted to get out of Macedonia so he fled to Greece and was held prisoner for some time. The guards at the refugee camp made him clean up torturing chambers. He had to clean up body parts, poo and urine. Every time he spoke of it, he started crying. When she asked why he began to cry everytime, he told her that he had been held prisoner in that chamber for two days and two nights. He was terrified. She never got to know why he was being kept in the chamber. He died before she thought of asking him. Elena and her family are the only people that pass this story on to further people.

(True story)

Thanks to heaven for looking after the contest in my absence :) I didn’t intend to be away quite so long but I came home from my trip with a nasty bout of flu and I’ve only just started to feel semi-human again today :( Anyway, It’s great to see so many new entries!

i've got a q: does era matter or does the sim have to be from the 21st century? there's a nationality i'd like to use but their culture greatly changes in such a short time-span (as in they're one thing in 1888 and another in 1988).

There has already been a few and may well be more historical themes in future contests so for the cultural diversity contest we’d like to keep entries as current as possible. That doesn’t mean you can’t reference the past though.
Please also include this information with your entry: A short paragraph or two to explain the point of interest you chose to illustrate for your country of choice: (This text should be an explanation of the “Point of Interest” shot mentioned above). This should be something that’s relative today so if it’s an historical fact then you should explain why it still holds importance to your country of choice in today’s world.

Sim’s Name: Nsishumba Mwenya

Country: Zambia

Continent: Africa

Age: Young Adult

Point of interests:

Makishi are masked characters associated with the coming of age rituals of the Vaka Chiyama Cha Mukwamayi communities of the north-western part of Zambia. The masks are believed to be a manifestation of the spirits of dead ancestors who return to the world of living. The Makishi Masquerade is connected to the Mukanda, an initiation school held annually for boys between the ages of eight and seventeen, a transition period for them to leave their childhood then being prepared to enter the world of adults in which in communion with their ancestors whose representation is the Makishi.
The Mukanda involves the circumcision of the initiates, tests of courage and lessons on their future role as men and husbands. Each initiate is assigned a specific masked character, which remains with him throughout the entire process. The Chisaluke represents a powerful and wealthy man with spiritual influence; the Mupala is the lord of the Mukanda and protective spirit with supernatural abilities; Pwevo is a female character representing the ideal woman and is responsible for the musical accompaniment of the rituals and dances. The Makishi is another masked character, representing the spirit of a deceased ancestor who returns to the world of the living to assist the boys.

Nsishumba performs Makishi dance (three from the left). Even though he lives in big city in Ndola, he sometimes visits to his old village hometown to have nostalgia times with his old neighbors and kids. He had been taught of practicing Makishi dance after passed attending Mukanda school, keeps the tradition by teaching his friends how to do Makishi dance and dance together with them in front of Mukanda students, before the proudly Zambian tradition might be vanished in the future by rapid modernization that has been happening both in village and city.

CC are completely free from TSR, MTS, blackpearlsims, parsimonious, fuzzylogicdishwasher.blogspot, lorandiasims3, milano sims. African clothing is from Sims Store. Makishi masks are made by myself.

Point of Interest:
The Rodeo: Rodeo is a national sport in the USA that grew out of ranch competitions between cowboys on the Western frontier in the 19th century. It features seven main events--bareback riding, steer wrestling, team roping, saddle bronc, tie-down roping, barrel racing, and bull riding. Professional cowboys and cowgirls sign up for many rodeos on their way to the National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas, Nevada. Money isn’t the only prize; there are also belt buckles to be won with the gold buckle being the most coveted.

Rodeos are held all over the States with competitions and leagues for all ages. It is credited with keeping the culture, experience and romanticism of the cowboy and the Old West alive. This is because rodeo is not just a way to compete, it is also a way of life for those who love it.

Will Williams grew up with a dream of competing in the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo (a very old, very large indoor competition in Texas featuring the very best). Trained under the expertise of his traveling rodeo grandparents, Will saw his dream realized after years of hard work. Today, Will is demonstrating the danger of bareback bronc riding.

Yee-haw Ya'll!
