Qualifications to Host:
Hosted Community Spirit building contest (http://modthesims.info/showthread.php?t=592998) was a judge in gdayar's Wanderlust building contest (http://modthesims.info/showthread.php?t=606747)

This is a home makeover with a trading spaces twist. House Rules is a TV show here in Australia where families swap houses and makeover not one room, but the entire house including the garden.

One starry night Loki was busy setting up his experiment on the roof of his house while across Strangetown Pascal Curious aimed his telescope towards a new blue star. The aliens hearing the call to an intergalactic party came down precisely when Loki’s experiment went horribly wrong. Not at all impressed at having lightening zap their ship and break their new plasma TV, the aliens sucked everyone out to the family bin leaving the houses as empty shells. Worse still, nobody could remember which house belonged to which family and as the fighting broke out the town council decided to assign each family to a house, no arguments allowed! Your job as town council is to decide which family gets which house. There are 7 Strangetown families to pick from and four houses to make over. They may not go back to their original house.

Game Set Up and Requirments:
This contest is open to base game players on, any skill level. This contest does not have to involve a lot of building.
The basic set up is to move the families out to the family bin to empty the houses. This can be done one at a time if you wish. The Grunt and Specter houses are not on the makeover list but you can use them as families. It may be easier to make a new sims folder for the contest. Simply rename your current folder, run the game and it will make you a new one. All you really need is each lot emptied. You do not have to move the sim families in.

This contest is for TS2 only.
No eliminations.
CC is not only allowed but feel free to go wild with it! There is no bonus to going cc free but you are also free to use no cc if you so choose.
Feel free to use any and all building cheats you want.
You may not add or remove full walls from the outside shell of the house. Do not remove outer foundation walls unless you are swapping it for wall so that you can add windows or doors. The outer shell must remain the same shape. You are free to change all the wall coverings inside and out. You may not add an attached garage.
You may add or remove half walls, fencing, lattice and stump decking. Remove or add fireplaces. Add or remove basements. Add or remove stairs so long as you don't remove the original wall or foundation to do so. Add or remove doors and windows. Add as many stories as you wish. You may remove and change roofs and platforms. Remove and add internal walls.
You may sculpt the terrain and change to any other terrain type. You may add foundation or walls for a carport or a garden structure that does not touch the house.
Each round will last for two weeks. Unless otherwise specified.
You may make up a short story about your families. Not required. You may show them in photos or not.
Make sure to say which family is doing the makeover on your entry. You can only choose a family one time.
And finally, have fun!

:!!: Rule Edit: I will allow the foundation to be replaced with walls so long as the outside shape stays the same footprint.

gdayars ( http://modthesims.info/m/46059), Justpetro ( http://modthesims.info/m/8131554), yavannatw (http://modthesims.info/m/8725424), Emergency Judge Karen Lorraine (http://modthesims.info/m/417674)

Each round will have a potential of scoring 25 points from each judge.

Build skill up to 5 points. This includes the floor plan.
Garden and outside up to 5 points.
Inside decorating Up to 5 points
Playability up to 5 points
This does not include items set up only for deco purposes. For example, a strip of pool water used as part of a decorative fountain is not expected to be usable as a pool. If it is not clear on your photos if items are for decoration or use you should make that clear by adding an explanation.
Suitability and requirements up to 5 points
Does the house seem suitable for the chosen family and meet their needs and wants?

The Families
Requirements Along with the requirements listed with each family there is an additional requirement, that the makeover somehow reflects the sim family who is doing the renovation. Make sure there is at least one item or a room/area that would suit each sim. What would they want to add to this reno? A moat? A sports car? a garden? You can use their bios, job, personality or aspiration for inspiration since some are tricky.

The Smith family
A family of four who look like they want the perfect suburban life. They consist of elder alien Pollination Tech#9 Smith, his adult wife Jenny, teenage son Johnny and child age daughter Jill.
Requirements: Each child must have their own room the parents an en-suite bathroom.
Bio's: The only thing PT9 loves more than his lawn is his family. When he is not spending time with his children, he enjoys clipping coupons and staring up at the sky.
Jenny loves having a career, but she wishes she could spend more time with her family, and maybe make some new friends. She really likes green.
Johnny dreams of being the hero that rides in on a white horse, or at least a cool sports car.
When Jill closes her eyes, she sees dolphins. She has her heart set on becoming a deep sea welder someday.

The Beaker family
This science and medical family consists of Loki, his wife Circe and the adult ‘boarder’, Nervous Subject.
Requirements: Nervous will require his own room and Loki a lab of some kind.
Bio's: As soon as he perfects his latest invention, Loki is sure to get the recognition he knows he deserves. In the meantime, he keeps himself busy by trying to assemble a nuclear reactor out of common household items. Loki is employed as an inventor.
Circe knows 238 different ways to make someone scream, and none of them are nice. She enjoys taxidermy and collecting coat hangers.
Nervous’s hobbies include twitching and blinking a lot.
Not much is known about Nervous, but his only personality points are 10 active and zero everything else!

The Curious Brother’s Lambert’s
This scientific family consists of three adult brothers; Pascal, Vidcund and Lazlo.
Requirements:Each brother should have his own bedroom with a nursery ready for Pascal's coming alien baby.
Bio's:No matter what happens, Pascal believes there is a logical explanation for everything. In his free time, he practices home psychoanalysis and collects conspiracy theories.
Serious and exact, Vidcund strives to fit the universe into a nice tidy package. He has an unnatural fondness for African violets.
Not as studious as his older brothers, Lazlo got his degree in Phrenology. He likes to call phone psychics and spends hours trying to bend forks with his mind.

The Grunt family
A military family of four males. Father and widower General Buzz, teenage sons Tank and Ripp and child age Buck.
Requirements: 3-4 bedrooms and something to keep fit that isn't a radio or TV.
Bio's:The General likes to have his clocks set to military time. He used to enjoy barbershop quartet singing, but that is classified information.
Tank Grunt wants to be just like his old man. He spends his days lifting heavy things, dodging imaginary bullets, and being bigger than the other guy, but deep down inside, he wonders if anyone really knows who he is.
Ripp totally doesn't care what you think of him. He is going to do whatever he wants to do, which is mostly what everyone else is doing.
More than anything else, Buck wants to be a pet stylist to the stars. He spends a lot of time wondering why his father never seems to notice him.

The Specter family
Consists of elder Olive Specter and her teenage niece Ophelia Nigmos. Known for her dead husbands and her graveyard, Olive is also a professional party guest…
Requirements: Each sim must have their own bedroom and a secret room for Olive to do - who knows what.
Bio's: Olive will stop at nothing to get what she wants. She spends her time collecting mushrooms, sharpening sticks, and excavating her yard.
Ophelia’s hobbies include hypochondria and monitoring the air quality. She worries about the future…and the past…and the present.

The Single Ladies
A group of four female adult sims. Lola and Chloe are sisters, no one is employed.
Requirements: At least two bedrooms and two full bathrooms.
Bio's:Intelligent and focused, Lola knows what she wants and how to get it. She enjoys politics and telling those around her what to do. She is a fortune sim and daughter of Pollination Tech#9 Smith from the Smith family.
The complete opposite of her sister, Chloe just wants to meet new people and to have a good time. She can often be found daydreaming or chatting on the phone. Romance is her game and she is also daughter to Pollination Tech#9 Smith from the Smith family.
Erin spends a lot of time working on her psychic powers. Of course she isn't really psychic, but don't tell her that. Popularity is her goal and Loki beaker is her brother of the beaker family.
Kristen envisions herself as a world famous sports champion. She doesn't particularly care for Strangetown, but it's only a pit stop on her track to greatness. Kristen has no family ties to Strangetown that I can see, except for dead parents and grandparents in her family tree. she is fortune aspiration.

The Loner family
A family of just one. Since nothing much is known about Ajay except that he is a loner and wears black.
Requirements: A masculine home and a way to make money.
Bio: To pass the hours, Ajay enjoys counting the grains of sand in his backyard. Another fortune sim Ajay has no job.

These will be announced each round. It’s up to you, the town council, to pick a family to go with the house.

There will be 4 rounds total, each lasting two weeks. Judges will get 1 week.

Round Four
You may pick any residential Strangetown lot you want! This can be an occupied or unoccupied lot.
You may spend as much as you like.
Make sure to pick a family that you have not picked before.

:!: You may have 12 walk around shots but floor plan shots are always free.

Make sure to leave all the outside wall in red. Because this lot is larger and more complex, I did up pictures of the walls in red for staying, blue that can be demolished to make it easier to see. You are free to knock out the upper story flooring and not use that space so long as the walls stay.
After moving the Beaker family out the lot is worth $61,718

Budget: After the renovation, your lot may come to $120,000. Your chosen family has $58,282 to spend.
:!!: Do not pick the Beaker family.
:!: You may have 15 shots since this is a large lot.

Please be sure to follow all picture rules here (http://modthesims.info/showthread.php?p=5419533#post5419533)

Checking in. :) Please feel free to ask questions as I am sure people will have some.

21st May 2018, 12:37 AM
So how do you become a judge?

21st May 2018, 12:42 AM
If you can either put up some pictures of a lot that you have built or decorated (A makeover of a maxis lot will do just fine too) or link to one you uploaded.

Thanks for volunteering to be our first judge. :D

21st May 2018, 12:53 AM
http://www.modthesims.info/download.php?t=592970 Only lot I have uploaded here :D

21st May 2018, 1:33 AM
LOL - love the concept. Good luck everyone.

Also, that house is hideous.

21st May 2018, 2:08 AM
Application to be a judge.

I do not have any lots uploaded in here. So very hard to link to those. But I did take a part as a contestant at your Community Spirit and as playalong (yes yes late late) in gdayars's Wanderlust. Too bad pics were eaten by MYP :(

EDIT: found some what was still at my compu

21st May 2018, 2:15 AM
Thanks gdayars, I will add you as judge one. :)

Also, that house is hideous.

It really is. *nods* Couldn't happen to a nicer place.

@Kukamuukaanmuka Can you link to some pictures or add at least one here, thanks. :)

21st May 2018, 2:23 AM
Yep, here :)

21st May 2018, 2:26 AM
That will do nicely, congrats on being judge two!

21st May 2018, 2:38 AM
runs away from judging and contestanting

I will just lurk from the side lines on this one ;)

21st May 2018, 3:08 AM
Well, I won't be participating in this one because the health crap has gone really wonky, but also because I have vowed not to waste any more time on that particular house. It's not only hideous, it's massively inconvenient, and nothing I've ever done to it has helped.

I'll watch, though. I'm sure what I see will be inspiring, so good luck to all.

21st May 2018, 3:30 AM
Jo, can judge also be playalong? I can judge palyalongs also, sure, but would like to try that horrid house myself too :)

21st May 2018, 3:58 AM
Sorry to hear you aren't doing well Peni :/

and yes so glad I am just judging the attempts :P think it would be only fair to attempt to fix its ugliness :D myself so you know, no unreasonable expectations :D

21st May 2018, 4:17 AM
Sorry to hear that @Peni Griffin I hope things get under control for you soon.

@Kukamuukaanmuka Feel free to play along. :D

I think anything that people can do to that house will be a vast improvement. I only attempted one makeover of it some years ago myself, so I know how horrible it is. I would totally be doing one now if my game was fixed.

One thing; it'll all be down hill from here! Every other house in Strangetown - yes, even the Curious Bunker! - will be easy in comparison to the Hell House.

21st May 2018, 6:18 AM
I won't have time to compete this time round but would like to be a judge? Take your pic from these uploads:

Edit: For the short time that I played Strangetown I used that house for a creep who imprisoned passersby in the downstairs part.

21st May 2018, 6:30 AM
Well looks like you are my third official judge @yavannatw :D

The house does have a creepy vibe.

21st May 2018, 6:46 AM
Woohoo! Thanks.

21st May 2018, 7:44 AM
Sorry for the deleting, my pc is misbehaving this morning.

I was going to apply for judge, but the time zones prevented me (It is just after 8am here).
So I will apply for emergency judge.
Here is a link to my maxis makeover lot: http://modthesims.info/download.php?t=557162

21st May 2018, 8:11 AM
Done @Justpetro :)

Now let's hope we get some contestants...

21st May 2018, 8:23 AM
Thanks, Jo - I am sure the contestants are working on their application round :)

21st May 2018, 11:04 PM
Budget: The lot may be worth up to $40,000. It comes from the bin at $15,638 so your family gets $34,362 to spend on the renovation. I know even my Sims say I'm a pedant, but doesn't that add up to $50,000 ?

21st May 2018, 11:09 PM
@AndrewGloria Thank you for that catch. I did that on my calculator and must have been thinking 50K and change my mind to 40K or something. Also, thank you for posting, I am worried if anybody is interested in this contest.

I will go fix that up immediately.

22nd May 2018, 2:46 AM
I am worried if anybody is interested in this contest. .

Give it some time :) The lot in guestion is not very easy to renovate :)

22nd May 2018, 8:05 AM
I have a question: Can you exceed the footprint of the house on upper floors?

22nd May 2018, 9:03 AM
You can do whatever you like on the upper floors. :) Also, great to see you here @Aysarth

22nd May 2018, 6:27 PM
When is round 1 due?

22nd May 2018, 6:49 PM
@Lylesnake there is a countdown timer link near the bottom of the first post :). It says 12 days and 5 hours.

22nd May 2018, 11:10 PM
*sweating* That house...yikes. I attempted a reno years ago and there was nothing I could do to breathe some life into it. Very creative concept for a contest, but I'm definitely going to sit this one out. Excited to see what people come up with, though!

23rd May 2018, 9:39 AM
I looked at that house last night and actually think anything one does may breath some life into that :)

23rd May 2018, 12:06 PM
@joansarah77 :
link: http://modthesims.info/download.php?t=596927
if you need it :)
Added pics of 3 other builds.

Oops - double post - sorry!

23rd May 2018, 6:31 PM
If I find the time this weekend to make over that lot I think I'll join. I was actually starting my own makeover of Strangetown, so this contest comes just in time :)

23rd May 2018, 11:26 PM
Everyone is under the same handicap, that house; so anything you do to it makeover wise is going to be a huge improvement. Also this is Strangetown so something strange and off the wall can work too.

My computer is about to go and get my new Nvidea card. So fingers crossed my game gets fixed. I will do up the table once it comes back which probably won't be for about 6 hours or so.

@Justpetro Thank you for your judging entry, I will swap you and Ellu around later. :)

I am working on an entry. It will either be up today, or close to the deadline, because I am off on holiday tomorrow.

I am glad you said strange is allowed!

24th May 2018, 8:18 AM
Question: can we recolour/change the gate and/or fence in the front yard?

24th May 2018, 9:28 AM
You can do anything you like. Rules 5 and 6 outline everything you can or can't change. The only thing you can't do is remove the outer shell walls or foundation.

@Aysarth Go wild, there are very few restrictions. :D

@Justpetro I have added you to the judges table.

24th May 2018, 12:31 PM
Thank you, Jo, I will do my best :)

24th May 2018, 10:55 PM
I'm back :D Guess what? My game is saving! :bunny: there are a few other things that need fixing both with the game and in general on my computer, but that major thing of it not saving fixed. *does happy dance*

What will make me even happier are entries and I am sorry if that house is daunting, I picked it because it is small. Think of it this way, contests often start easy and get harder, with this one the hard one is out of the way first. :D

25th May 2018, 12:31 AM

:new: Welcome home, Ajay!

24th May 2018

Dear Mr. Loner
It is a pleasure to inform you that the town council of our great Strangetown has decided to assign the house on 73 Road to Nowhere to you and any other members of your household. The house is in need of some repairs, as such, the council has decided a budget of 40.000 simoleons is enough to bring it up to code. You are free to redecorate and change the layout of the inside, nevertheless the outside shell must remain. Further stories can be added at your discretion. Do note that you are free to repaint the exterior.
We hope you the best for the rest of your life here in Strangetown.

Best regards,
Town Council of Strangetown

Ajay Loner is, well, a loner. What is known about him is that he wants to strike it rich. Other than that, not much. The other residents of Strangetown thus learnt a bit more about Ajay after his makeover of 73 Road To Nowhere, known around the place as the Hell House.
First of all, Ajay got rid of the hideous roof. Instead, he added an extra floor with flat roofs. As for the walls, he decided to stay with the original brick and wood scheme, but with a cleaner and more modern look. The inside walls featured some exposed brick and a neutral paint colour, while the flooring was swapped to a sleek wood floor. His choice of colour for his clothes, black, was also reflected on the decoration of the house: black bathroom fixtures, black kitchen and black living room furniture. Overall, his decoration embraced an industrial style.
One of the mandatory points of this renovation was a way for Ajay to make money - after all, what is a Fortune Sim without the cash? So, Ajay built himself a small office in the basement where he can work. He also included a spinning bicycle to keep fit.
Lastly, he did a slight rework of the outside, creating a pathway to the back porch and adding somewhat of a backyard. The grass isn't actually that green, but hey, it's a desert after all. Ajay doesn't even like grass that much. An anonymous report says that Mr. Loner has been spotted numerous times counting grains of sand.
The house meets Strangetown's safety standards, with a burglar alarm and a smoke alarm (invisible).

Here are the photos the town council took during their inspection of the lot.

I don't think I've broken any rules. If I have, please do let me know and I will go back and perform the required changes before the deadline. As for the family requirements, I fulfilled the "way to make money" requirement by adding a tablet (technically a computer) where Ajay can offer financial advice (even for a non-FT player, Ajay could still earn money by writing a novel). The "masculine home" requirement was a fair bit more subjective, but I think I've checked it as well by going with an industrial look. I also tried to add in a bit of black where I could to make the house fit Ajay's (lacking) personality. He isn't very keen on much of the weirdness in Strangetown, so the house is pretty normal.

Hope you like my makeover of 73 Road To Nowhere. I might upload it after the contest ends. Until then, I hope more people join this interesting contest!
(@Justpetro is the juice bar open yet?)

25th May 2018, 1:01 AM
Opening the fermented fruit juice bar :)

Great to see the first entry!

25th May 2018, 2:54 AM
@Yvelotic2001 Looks great, very stylish :D You are first on the contestants table.

25th May 2018, 8:15 PM
Yay! New contest! I was a play-along in the Community Spirit contest (because I didn't get my act together quick enough), but I hope to enter this one for real.

@joandsarah77 , I have a question - moving Olive's graves with her will raise the lot value too high (I'm only just under budget at the moment), but I can spawn tombstones of life and death for free. In that case, would it be acceptable to have the graves be Olive's real ones, taking the photo of the lot price before move in? Or is this breaking the rules?

ETA: I've just tried it and it doesn't seem to raise the lot value, so never mind...

25th May 2018, 9:19 PM
The Specter family Consists of elder Olive Specter and her teenage niece Ophelia Nigmos. Known for her dead husbands and her graveyard, Olive is also a professional party guest… Requirements: Each sim must have their own bedroom and a secret room for Olive to do - who knows what. Bio's: Olive will stop at nothing to get what she wants. She spends her time collecting mushrooms, sharpening sticks, and excavating her yard. Ophelia’s hobbies include hypochondria and monitoring the air quality. She worries about the future…and the past…and the present.

The town council has worked tirelessly to produce this renovation under-budget. Whilst some fixtures and fittings may not be top of the range to accomodate this, they have nevertheless come up with a modest, private home for the mysterious Ms Specter and her teenage niece. Originally, the brickwork was going to plastered over and painted inside, but Ms Specter liked it so much she begged the builders to leave it bare in many places.

The builders also know when to keep their mouths shut, hence you won't hear anything about a "hidden basement" from them...

25th May 2018, 10:17 PM
Good work, both of the first 2 entries :) :Pint:

25th May 2018, 11:29 PM
Question: You ask for a pic showing the lot price--is there a limit to what the lot can cost? I've looked over the rules several times, but if it's stated, I don't see it

25th May 2018, 11:43 PM
It's in the spoiler under the application round lot picture.

Budget: The lot may be worth up to $40,000. It comes from the bin at $15,638 so your family gets $24,362 to spend on the renovation.

26th May 2018, 12:15 AM
@quycksylver Just what justJones said. :) The budget for each round will always be with the given house for that round.

@NatteryakToad welcome to the contest! :D

26th May 2018, 8:57 AM
@quycksylver Just what justJones said. :) The budget for each round will always be with the given house for that round.

Well, hell...there it is. Somehow managed to miss that in the bazillion times I looked at the rules. Thanks y'all. I should have my entry up sometime later today, after I edit , 'cause I went a BIT over budget, lol. I'm glad I asked first.

26th May 2018, 11:07 AM
Can't wait to see it. :D You might want to change some things around as going over budget will lose you points.

27th May 2018, 5:07 PM

Entire lot:

Floor plans:

Basement? What basement?

Guided tour:

PT9 has this nagging feeling that he really ought to have a lawn. His daughter has a nagging feeling that they really ought to have a pool. The resettlement funds didn't stretch that far, so PT9 is digging out a hole that will one day become their new swimming pool.

Returning to the front of the house, a short corridor between two semi open portico areas leads to the front door.

Two archways on either side of the large hall open up the ground floor, maximising the light and giving it a sense of space.

The lounge is cosy, with room for the entire family to sit and watch TV (and for at least one of them to lounge, should they want to.)

The kitchen is roomy, but a little basic. Jenny misses having lots of gadgets and appliances, but now that she's set a washing up rota she finds doing without isn't so bad.

The house doesn't have air conditioning (because the electric company is running it on a Mac), so on really hot days when it's stuffy and sweltering inside the family like to go and sit in the shade of the portico amongst the plants and hope for a cooling breeze.

For similar reasons the family like to dine al fresco.

Jenny really, really likes green. Fortunately her (green) husband is quite happy for her to furnish their bedroom accordingly. It has an ensuite bathroom...

... and a door leading out onto the lower roof, where PT9 spends a lot of time staring at the clouds, and also looking at them (and beyond them) through his telescope.

Johnny would like to be a hero when he grows up, riding fast horses or driving even faster cars. In the meantime he has to content himself with his remote control car and wallpaper featuring a madman in a blue box (who is a hero at least some of the time).

Jill's bedroom is not featured, but it's pink and will eventually have a view of the swimming pool.

Please note that all ground floor exterior walls are intact as required. I just went a bit wild with cutouts in order to give the place some light. Trying to improve the lighting was also part of the decision to build upwards and brick in the basement.

28th May 2018, 6:41 AM
I love how you did the outside @muridae Adding you to the table. :)

28th May 2018, 12:55 PM
Can foundation walls be replaced with regular walls? Like for a door/window. And I'm guessing the inside of the basement cannot be made bigger as it requires deleting foundation bits?

28th May 2018, 12:58 PM
Hmm, you are pushing it. I guess I'll allow that. :)

28th May 2018, 5:49 PM
Parhaps it will be a better idea to make changes after the first round, since there are entries in already? A door in that foundation wall means it will be much easier to move the entrance out of that narrow little space.

28th May 2018, 9:30 PM
This science and medical family consists of Loki, his wife Circe and the adult ‘boarder’, Nervous Subject.

Working tirelessly in their respective careers in Science and Medicine, Loki and Circe were granted permission by the local authorities to conduct research in their own personal lab. However, any contracted research projects must be kept secret, so security systems are in place to keep the lab under tight lockdown.

Through the move and the rebuild, the aspiring duo were luckily able to keep their own personal test subject (although he is a bit too twitchy for their liking) on hand. Nervous gets his own personal room for continued observation.

Meanwhile, Loki and Circe get a comfortable 1 bedroom set-up on the second floor:

Of course, regular research wouldn't be fun without top-secret personal research in an underground secret lab:

There is no reason why the entrance can't be moved, people are allowed to remove the stairs. Actually, that is why there is a rule saying feel free to remove stairs, I was hoping people would move the entrance. ;)

@Modder great to see your entry. :) I would suggest retaking your floorplan shots. If you read the photo rules you will see I ask you to fill the shot with your building. Getting closer means judges can judge better and not miss any of your great details. :)

28th May 2018, 11:38 PM
I know the entrance can be moved - it was just an example (I said it would be easier to do if you change the rules regarding the foundations :)).

28th May 2018, 11:44 PM
Parhaps it will be a better idea to make changes after the first round, since there are entries in already? A door in that foundation wall means it will be much easier to move the entrance out of that narrow little space.

My entrance is already in a different place, I'm just trying to make the basement more usable by having an outside entrance and expanding it to the full footprint of the foundation.

29th May 2018, 12:30 AM
@HugeLunatic, @jandsarah77

My objection is not about entrances or about wanting to use a full footprint. (I did a little makeover for myself according to the rules and I know how problematic that foundation is).

My objection is about changing the rules after several contestants have already entered, because they built under different rules. And I think contestants have the right to build under the exact same rules.

29th May 2018, 12:39 AM
You do have a point @Justpetro but once the question was asked I realized it was a good point. I want this to be a contest with few rules, the main one or spirit of it is-is don't change the original footprint. I think if we already had a fairly full table I might have waited for the next round but there is only 3 people on there so far. If they wish they still have time to change their uploads. I will say though as judges not to judge on windows or lack of in the basement this round.

29th May 2018, 12:50 AM
Fair enough, Jo - as long as it is made clear to all the judges. And the 3 people on the table have taken time to build and should not be at a disadvantage - not everyone may have the time to rebuild according to new rules.

29th May 2018, 1:21 AM
Just mention them and explain and/or pm the new rules to them.

29th May 2018, 1:53 AM
Good idea Gina. :)

Letting you know of a rule change in case you want to alter your entries. I am allowing removal of the foundation if you want to replace it with wall to add windows or doors. The shells shape must remain the same it's just a swap around. The judges will not be looking at it this round so if you want to leave your entries as they are is also fine. No one will be given more or less points for windows or doors this round. Only the wall covering will be looked at same as it would be for foundation wall. Sorry that I didn't think about this possibility.

29th May 2018, 3:31 AM
@joandsarah77 whoops, sorry about that! I misread the rules and thought it was more of a full lot shot. Here's some closer top-down view pictures:

29th May 2018, 4:04 AM
@Modder Thanks :) You need to edit your entry post and put those new pictures there. The table only links to one post per round and judges won't go searching for other posts for more pictures. They will only have your original post. You are free right up to the last minute to edit your entry. You're doing well, it takes a bit to get your contest feet so to speak. :)

There is one needed shot of the entire lot so the judges can see your garden or anything else you might place like a kids playground, car etc. Floor plan shots are so they can see your building.

29th May 2018, 5:59 AM
Ok, I edited my original entry and included them under the spoiler tag, but didn't attach them to that post since I already have them uploaded as attachments in my second post. Is that okay?

29th May 2018, 6:17 AM
That depends on the judges, some really like them attached. Sometimes pictures don't show up as large under the spoiler as they do attached. Since its a small lot you might get away with it but I will ask.

@gdayars @Justpetro @yavannatw

29th May 2018, 8:11 AM
@joandsarah77 - Just checking in to say that I'm fine with the addition of wall/foundation swap possibilities. It doesn't affect my entry as I'm not using the foundation or basement area at all, but I might make use of it in future lots.

I need to re-upload a couple of my floorplan screenshots as I see that when I did them for the eleventy-billionth time after moving in the family to draw the chairs in I didn't put the walls back up. My game went into meltdown and started deleting CC files on me yesterday, but I think I've got it behaving again now so will edit my post to swap them in the next day or two.

29th May 2018, 9:31 AM

@gdayars @Justpetro @yavannatw

I suggest that @Modder just add this and the post number of the other screenshots to her text in case the judges forget about it :)

29th May 2018, 5:23 PM
Just letting you know that I am happy with my entry and won't be changing it.

30th May 2018, 12:40 AM
Great, @Yvelotic2001, because it is far too quiet in the fermented fruit juice bar :)

30th May 2018, 6:52 AM
All pictures must be on the same post, just so everybody knows. If you want to add more or change them, go back and use the edit button on your entry. Your entry will be linked to on the table, just click it and it should take you directly to it, no hunting around. :)

I was asking judges if they want attached pictures or not. I strongly suggest on larger lots to attach them. On small lots like this one, it doesn't matter as much since you can get in close.

30th May 2018, 6:45 PM
Guess I'll direct myself to the fermented fruit juice bar then!

30th May 2018, 7:30 PM
So @Yvelotic2001 and I will have a party :) If anyone want to join us, you are welcome.

30th May 2018, 8:56 PM
Alright, I've edited my original entry post and attached the additional photos. Sorry for the delay... I have to move files between my windows partition and my mac to post (I'm running UC on bootcamp) and I've been busy this week. It should be all good now. Please let me know if there's anything else I need to do!

30th May 2018, 9:46 PM
No need to apologize, @Modder - there are still 4+ days left before the deadline. You can make changes up until then if you want to :)

31st May 2018, 4:08 PM
Hi everyone :)
Circe and Loki fancied a change...

I decided to decorate this house using a colour scheme! I used black, white and gray as neutrals, then added red and green for pops of colour. Since they're both scientists, I imagined Circe and Loki would appreciate a more modern look. Being an Inventor and a Knowledge sim, I imagined Loki being more into machinery and technology. Circe, on the other hand, is in the Medical career track and thus more interested in biology and plants. Nervous is... well, Nervous. Anyway, enough about the imaginary lives of these pixel people, let's have a look and see what their new home looks like!

First, let's have a look at what this lot costs.

This is a view of the whole lot!

I got rid of the basement *gasp*. It would have been a great place for Loki's lab but it would've also been very obvious if the police ever came round, y'know?

Here is the ground floor! (a more detailed explanation of the rooms follows, if you're interested)

Next floor!

This is the roof!

Now here are the pictures of the rooms themselves! I use too many exclamation marks!

Here are Loki and Circe holding hands in their sunflower garden :) aren't they precious? Since they're very unfriendly, they'd probably value their privacy, so I thought they'd like to have tall plants around their garden. And what a romantic sight of those reactors in the background...

This is what Circe ominously calls "the feeding room"... I'm not sure if she'd call it that because it's the dining room... or because it's where she keeps her cowplant, Aphrodite. I also used those fabulous slanted windows to make the architecture a bit more interesting. It would also provide Circe's cowplant with lots of light!

Here is the kitchen. It's pretty bare-bones, but I have a feeling Circe and Loki are the type of people who order take out a lot. I also decided to put a statue of Venus in that little corner because why not? It’s a reference to Circe's Greek heritage.

The downstairs bathroom is quite large. I imagine this is one of the places Nervous hides when he doesn't want to be Loki's guinea pig again.

Here is the living room! This is where Circe and Loki would entertain if they had friends. But they don't, so this room is mostly just for show. Note the amphora (that Greek vase thing) in the back... a little reference to Circe's Greek ancestry there.

This is the foyer/hallway. It’s open to the second story.

This is Circe and Loki's bedroom.

Nervous's room. I suppose it's a step up from his basement/observation room back in the Beaker's original lot... but it's still very bare bones. Since Nervous is very active, I thought he would like to have a ballet barre in his room! How he got this past Circe and Loki, I don't know, because I doubt they'd actually let him have this... I imagine Nervous quite likes this, since ballet calms his anxiety.

Here is Loki's lab! I just took a few of the things he had in his old lot with him, but I also added a telescope in front of the large window. The Beakers are interested in science, sure, but they're also extreme busy bodies. The telescope is not only used for observing stars, but observing the neighbours, too.

I think that's everything... I hope I did everything correctly! I apologize if the pictures are a bit big, I shrunk them down as much as I could without making them too blurry. Making this house over was quite a challenge, especially because we had to keep it under 40k simoleons. I did thoroughly enjoy it, though, and I can't wait for the next round :D

Those slanted windows in the feeding room are brilliant!

Since this is "trading spaces" I'd understood that part of the deal was that some other Strangetown family is making the conversion for the target household? As a non-participant this is hardly my business; but if I read that part right, you might want to state who the designing family is. In the previous case it was presumably the Grunts, as it was supposed to be military housing. I would guess, based on the consideration for Nervous and for the cowplant, that this design was done for the Beakers by the Curiosi, but the judges shouldn't have to guess and I'd enjoy kibitzing more if I knew, too.

If I understood wrong, ignore me.

31st May 2018, 6:43 PM
I originally thought so, but while I was building my entry I repeatedly re-read the rules and I understood the family we chose is the one doing the conversion, not another family doing it for them. At least that was my understanding after looking at the rules several times. Thus I did not worry about having a particular family, say, the Smiths, doing the conversion for the household I chose, Loner, and just went with what I thought suited Ajay.

I could be wrong though, so could you clarify, @joandsarah77?

P.S. - I too love those slanted windows!

31st May 2018, 7:26 PM
I believe Trading Spaces only refers to families moving to other houses?

The judging criteria about that on Page 1 says this: Suitability and requirements up to 5 points. Does the house seem suitable for the chosen family and meet their needs and wants?

I think that is clear enough - it only has to suit the family that is going to live there.

All you need to know about any family is what Jo has written on Page 1 - it is a building contest, if one has never played Strangetown it would be impossible for them to know how nice the Curious Boys are.

The contestants are all doing fine work!

31st May 2018, 8:54 PM
I also interpreted the rules as stating that all we needed to worry about was the families moving into the new property.

I'm glad everyone likes the slanted windows :)

I love perusing this thread and seeing what everyone else has done, I love to see everyone's interpretations of how these families would decorate their homes :)

Maybe the meteor , or something else , what hit Strangetown a long time ago , made it so dry and sandy. Nature and time have done their jobs, and nowadays, small oasis are starting to appear every here and there, and the property of 73 Road to Nowhere is one of them. Ajay Loner was lucky in that.

What he was not so lucky about, was that he only had 20 000 simoleons, and the house costed almost the double... He almost gave up... but then he had a letter, what changed all. Ajay's grandfather was once a businessman, his partner was Mr Motherlode Ottomas, one sneaky , clever businessman who loved family and children. Ajay remembers that Mr M.Ottomas played a lot with him when he was a toddler. He had left him 20 000 simoleons! Mr Ottomas had died a long time ago, but Ajay got the letter now, simply because nobody found him before to deliver it...

" Hey! YOU! Who are writing this! I am a loner, suprised??"

Foundation (also shows whole lot). The basement had to go.

First floor ( I will show the balconies in extras, plus the stereos and deco in the livingroom what are bloced by wall from here)

Second floor

Roof (also shows the whole lot)

Price (tried to show the balconies here too)

Now the extra pics..

When he arrived he need to use the toilet. naturally I did not pictured that, he used the half bath upstairs, so, here is the full size bathroom.

After he was counted the every single sandgrain from the yard, he decided he needs to earn money. You have to pay your bills, right? Fishing sounded great option, after all in this game the small pond can give you unlimited amount of fish, lucky sims!

Eh well.. not so good start

He is fishing from invisible pond, I use iCad's autonomy version. I took it off in up-down pics as it costs 0 simoleons, but then i tought I should show it, so I use one of the extra shots on that.

Livingroom, showing the painting and stereos what could not be seen in the up-down pics. No curtains, but you cannot see inside from the street anyway, the fence around the pool covers that.

Sauna.. in that climate.. well, desiner of the reno is a Finn... And anyhow, there can be pretty cold night at least even in the desert, and when Ajay meets certain people, he may get so cold feelings that sauna is very useful :P

"Meets? Me? I told you I am a loner!"

He seems to like the pool. Very narrow way to get there and not much space for partyguests to get in and out.

" What party?!?! I repeat.. I am a l-o-n-e-r ! I can walk and come and go just fine, plenty of room."

Time to have soup with just baked bread. He decided to buy only one chair so he can affort the stereos.. fine , your kitchen, but where do you thing everyone else you invite over dinner are going to seat?

"Honestly? Do you even hear what I try to say to you!!?? I am NOT inviting anyone! I AM A LONER!!!"

After several days of fishing, he finally got better and had enough to make one crate with packing station! Tho he looks like he is a little lost, I believe he gets the idea eventually.

Back door leads from kitchen to back yard, where is small bbq and patio furniture.. again just one chair... hmm.. must be nice to sit there at sunset and eat our hamburger all alone :/

" This is not happening, I have repeated myself so many times now.. I am a loner!!! I enjoy sitting there ALONE!!"

he got a small telescope at the second floor balcony. Simply cause he was informed that having a telescope is kind of unwritten rule in Strangetown.

And time to go to sleep.. at least he has doublebed.. he must secretly wish to find someone special soon ;)

"NO I am not! I am restless sleeper so i need more space. Last time! I am a loner, for REAL!"

When he got enough fishies to have 3 full crates, open the business it is! Jenny and Ripp here bought a fish crate, as did Loki who arrived next. General Buzz was the lucky fourth, who bought the shoe :)
He closed the business right away for the day, did not even chatted with anyone. Seemed weird, I think I just figured out why, he must be a loner!

"AND now you figured that out.. all by yourself?? *sight*.. nevermind, forget........"

31st May 2018, 10:35 PM
Wow, so many posts :D

Sorry for any confusion. The family doing the makeover is the family who is moving into the house. If the beakers are moving in then the Beaker's are doing the makeover. The Town Council is simply assigning names leaving the hard work up to the families. :D The families can only be used once and they can't have their old houses back.

@Simoleon37 So glad you could join us. :bunny:

@Kukamuukaanmuka Great to have you now as a contestant. :D

1st Jun 2018, 12:50 AM
I will be wanting a list with links of cc used throughout this contest - I'm seeing a lot that I'm drooling over.

1st Jun 2018, 1:30 AM
That depends on the judges, some really like them attached. Sometimes pictures don't show up as large under the spoiler as they do attached. Since its a small lot you might get away with it but I will ask.

@gdayars @Justpetro @yavannatw

Sorry for late response. They show up big enough for me.
Apologies for double post.

1st Jun 2018, 3:27 AM
Sorry I am late! Pictures are fine, I am in the middle of moving and labor and delivery drama so forgive me if I take a bit :)

1st Jun 2018, 9:26 AM
I am good with the pics as well :) I will ask if I am not sure about anything.

Hi Jo! I thought I should just post and point out that you haven't put Modder in the table yet. I suspect this is just an oversight. To be very pedantic, there is also a mention in the first post of the "Lambert's, which I think is just a carry-over from your last contest. (I remember the Lamberts well - they are the biggest and most difficult family I've ever played. Mine are still living -- and struggling -- in Elswyn.)

With Modder included that brings us to 6 contestants, and from their posts I presume that Quycksylver and HugeLunatic are going to post entries too. I suppose eight entries isn't too bad, but it's certainly a slow take-up compared to the last two contests. Your Community Spirit contest filled up while I was still trying to make the foundation! A couple of possible reasons occur to me. Maybe it's too soon after the last contest and people simply felt they needed a rest. I also wonder of the standard of the entries, especially the winning entries, in recent contests has been so high that people just felt they couldn't compete.

Anyway, I was planning to sit this one out, but I think I will have a go and see if I can do anything with that house. Provided I can think of something that isn't total rubbish, I'll submit near the deadline. If you have 15 proper entries by that time, well and good -- just make me a play-along. If we're still struggling by that time, I can be a contestant, even if it's just to make the numbers up. I'll try to produce something passable for every round.

@AndrewGloria - way to go :) I did a (granted, really quick) makeover and the house isn't really as tough as it looks, the basement being the part that is the most problematic - so enjoy :)

1st Jun 2018, 8:49 PM
For this house, I went with a sort of Southwestern meets Midcentury modern vibe. The main color scheme is neutral colors and warm wood tones for a masculine feel along with occasional pops of bright color to keep things interesting.

As you can see, I took the basement out.

Master Bath--sorry about the walls down pic, but I couldn't get a decent pic with the walls up!

Office area: equipped with an old school typewriter so Ajay can work as a writer or journalist. Since this IS Strangetown, the typewriter also functions as a computer for any stealth hacking needs! ....Or he can be boring and just give financial advice.

The balcony; A nice place to relax. A little bare right now, but he has plans to put a bar in eventually :Pint:

Living Room

Reading Nook: A good place to hide in the event of uninvited guests. I'm looking at you, Welcome Wagon!

Guest Bath: this one was even tighter quarters than the Master Bath, so walls down once again.

Breakfast Bar

Patio: For those rare occasions when he actually wants to be sociable. This also provides a great vantage point for counting all those grains of sand in his backyard.

I think that's everything. It took a lot longer to redo this thing to bring it in under budget than I thought it would--but I finally did it!

1st Jun 2018, 10:55 PM
@AndrewGloria Thank you for catching that.

@quycksylver Welcome to the contest. :)

I'm not too well, so I'll add both of you later. Then we just need 3 more. If any of you know somebody who is interested let them know there are 2 days left.

2nd Jun 2018, 7:56 AM
I would like to join the contest. I will be able to start building tonight. If I understand correctly, I can pick any family from the list? Even If that family is already used by another contestant?

2nd Jun 2018, 8:06 AM
@Marleen267 You each have the pick of the 7 families, other contestants entries have nothing to do with yours.
You need to makeover the given house each round, choosing a family who you think will work for that house. Once chosen you can't use that family for the other rounds. Neither can you pick them for their old home if it comes up later. (they will) EG The Beaker's can't move back into the Beaker house. :)

I have rehomed Ajay Loner! I update the home for the modern man!

The Single Ladies
A group of four female adult sims. Lola and Chloe are sisters, no one is employed.
Requirements: At least two bedrooms and two full bathrooms.
Intelligent and focused, Lola knows what she wants and how to get it.

The Singles are pretty much my favourite family in Strangetown, so I had to pick them first! I usually play Erin and Kristen as a couple so that's reflected in the house. I also have always played aliens as being interested in plant life, so their homes tend to feature a lot of greenery.

The house has been modified to have 3 bedrooms (2 double, one single) and 2 full bathroom. There's also a kitchen, living area, small office, landing, and balcony.

Final price of $39,997

I never play basements, so the basement is still there but empty. I removed the stump decking at the back (which I believe was allowed per the rules?)

Ground floor layout

First floor layout

Full lot overview

The kitchen features a fridge, oven, dishwasher, and trash compactor.

A small office off the kitchen gives a quiet place to job hunt or play games

The living room has space for chilling and studying. The cartoony flowers above the TV are a stereo. There's a burglar alarm next to the front door.

The downstairs bathroom has a shower out of view to the right.

The upstairs landing, with door leading out to the balcony.

The balcony has a place to relax in the shade, and an exercise bike for Kristen's fitness training.

Erin and Kristen's bedroom.

Lola's bedroom. Lola has a small reading nook for when she wants to get away from the business (and noise) of the rest of the house.

Chloe's bedroom.

I was definitely grumbling when I saw the lot for this round, but I'm actually pretty happy with the makeover. Maybe one day I'll actually use the basement as well

Please do let me know if the images are too large - I've resized them and they seem ok but I always worry about these things :)

Ladies and Gentlemen I present the new house of the Specter Household

Entering the house leads you into a sitting area where you can sit and chat about days (and people) past

Or if you prefer a more secluded area, somewhere you could maybe read a murder mystery or two, then look no further than the reading nook

Your stomach must be rumbling after all this chit chat, so it time to make your way over to the state of the art kitchen. Perfect for wooing your future vict- erm lovers with a nice meal, and even nicer decor!

What's that? You prefer a more formal dining setting? Well just head over to our dining area, complete with Juice bar to get those social meters rising, and those inhibitions lowering :Pint:

"But how will we keep away that pesky teen from ruining our chances?" I hear you ask. Worry no more, as the Teen Bedroomâ„¢ has got you covered.
Now with added separate bathroom

So now you've both had a few drinks, you've been chatting for a while it's time to take this somewhere a bit more...private. Well guess what? You've got the whole second floor to yourself, including a fancy balcony.

Now it's time to lock down that partner, with the perfect proposal spot next to the lake. Just ignore the graves of your prevoiu- uh I mean the local cemetary

So you've got your man, your stomach's full, what's left for there to do? Why read a relaxing book in the basement of couse...oh
...that's not supposed to be there....

2nd Jun 2018, 6:43 PM
I am really impressed by how original everybody is :) It is almost hard to believe everyone started with the same ugly lot! Very good work, all of you.

2nd Jun 2018, 8:31 PM
If my images seem small it is because i can only run my game on a small resolution and making them bigger isn't possible.

i decided to makeover this house for the singles because i'm sure this house was meant for them.

i decided to give most of the girls double beds because...single girls need loving too right?

more images

Rooms For each girl:
-Leopard print bed-is chloe's because she's a romance sim.
-small single bed room-is kristens because she doesn't plan on staying in strangetown long.
-room with desk and stripey bed-loas because i'd envisage her as wanting a bland workable room being more serious than chloe.
-room with orangish bedding-is erins,if you look close enough you can see a picture of loki and circe on her wall :)

2nd Jun 2018, 9:07 PM
I have chosen the Beaker family. I picture them as a very clean and neat family who live in a sterile, modern house. So that is what I build. I added another level for the Beakers which includes their bedroom and private bathroom as well a doorway to the flat roof where they can stargaze. I kept the basement and turned it into Nervous's room and place where Circe can perform her experiments. To access the basement, I made a secret staircase. The door to these stairs and so the basement can only be entered by the Beakers. On the ground floor I turned the small rooms at the front in two lab's; one for Circe and one for Loki. For the kitchen and living room I deleted the walls to integrate both and have a sense of an open space. Finally, I surrounded the house with a chain mail fence to fend off unwanted visitors. The Beakers don't do very ethical experiments after all.

More pictures behind the spoiler.

@emerald1234 - the house is pretty.

Your screenshots are a bit small - can you take bigger ones? (I know you are new to this, and I can see them well enough, but they should really be bigger).

Also - you should get rid of the gridlines.
That can be done by: go into cameramanmode (press tab) - or (easier for me) - press F10 and they should mostly go away.
Don't worry if they are not perfect immediately, by the end of this contest you will have learned how to take nice ones :) You can edit your screenshots and your entry until the deadline and there is still one day left. Strongs :)

the reason that the pictures aren't bigger is because my game window is pretty small and its the only window i can play the game on,if i can't make the pictures bigger will i be disqualified?

2nd Jun 2018, 10:06 PM
I doubt that, @Emerald1234 - I can see your pics well enough. I think you should just explain that in your entry so that the other judges will know why they are smaller - that should be fine then :)

2nd Jun 2018, 11:22 PM
I'm here, still not well -but I think with the one I missed we have 10?

2nd Jun 2018, 11:40 PM
Get well soon, Jo. We have 12. I logged on this morning to see five new entries! Great job everyone.

@Kukamuukaanmuka I hope you can get the rest of your pics in.

2nd Jun 2018, 11:52 PM
Thank you! Karen counted 12 as well.

Guys ignore what I said above, there is one day left on the clock.

3rd Jun 2018, 12:46 AM
@yavannatw , just did , all the pics and the story also :) Just took some time as I got carried away as usual, It was supposed to be just few words story :)

So yep, updated my entry :)

3rd Jun 2018, 3:14 AM
I'm submitting this as an entry, but if after all the slots are filled someone else still wishes to enter, then please take this as a 'play along' entry so that they can compete. :)
Hi, I'm Ophelia Nigmos (or so it says in my underpants; I can't really remember for sure). I just moved into this place with my elderly relative, Olive, and we've done the place up a bit, so I thought I would show you.

Top down full lot:

Ground Floor:

Roof terrace:

Lot value:

Here is Olive in her basement room. She won't let me in there! She is growing herbs and mushrooms, so she says. She also has a stick collection there. Some of them are pointy.

This is my room; I like to lie here and daydream about my imaginary boyfriend. He has green skin and his name is Johnny. I wish he were real! Maybe some day I'll meet someone like him.

I can chat with strangers in the office nook. I have no idea who any of them are, but they all seem to have amnesia just like me and Olive!

Olive likes to cook in the kitchen. Sometimes she cooks the mushrooms she grows, but she won't let me have any.

When she's eaten quite a lot of mushrooms, Olive likes to lounge in her room. She has an imaginary friend called Nervous and she talks to him a lot!

The bathroom has a nice shower...

And lots of fishes.

Olive is always grumpy. She can't remember anything about the past, either. She's currently looking for someone to hire to fix a leaky tap.

Outside, we have a small deck. Olive keeps some tools out there. We don't really have anything in the garden to take care of, but she says she feels as though she might like to do some digging one day.

A strange woman called Bella came over today. She said that the decor wasn't red enough. How rude!

I persuaded Olive to install a solar panel to help cut down on electricity consumption. I have a small weather station on the roof terrace where I monitor the local climate.

I hope you liked my tour! If you live in Strangetown, maybe you could fill me in on some details. Like, where are my parents? And why am I wearing a tie?

3rd Jun 2018, 3:30 AM
@simsample Great to see you here!

Also can everyone make sure that the family you choose is easy for the judges to see.

3rd Jun 2018, 4:43 AM
Sim Sample, Where did you get the Mini Nervous from??? Love all your cc. I can't wait to see where your story leads whether it is official or a play-along.

3rd Jun 2018, 10:57 AM
Mini Nervous? Hunts for mini Nervous... Where?

Going to check the table and start on judging sheets. It's 8pm here so I won't close the application round until the morning-my morning. :)

3rd Jun 2018, 11:31 AM
@Emerald1234 I just noticed your pictures, did you use a screenshot program? Fraps, Gadwin there are others. Make sure to use Tab to remove the UI and if you can at the least make your floor plan shots as large as the front shot. Judges have a big task and having as large a picture as possible helps them out. :) By the way, the one time I made over this house, I made it over for the Singles. :)

3rd Jun 2018, 11:34 AM
I also want a mini Nervous :lovestruc

3rd Jun 2018, 11:41 AM
Table updated, we have 13, maybe somebody will make it lucky 14? Also, you will now see all the family names in the table rather than 'entry' this will help us all keep track. :)

I uploaded it here:

Strangetown council decided that this little house would be suitable for a two person household, with a little redevelopment. So, the Spectre household was selected as owners.

I am having my usual trouble with attachments - had to use my laptop to add them, and it is Sooo Sloow! Trying to edit with my own PC.

The Council has decided that the landscaping should stay true to the desert environment, and developed the grounds accordingly. Olive was unimpressed. She seemed to think too little space had been left for her own outdoor interests.

The new open plan upper floor allowed plenty of entertaining space for the outgoing and sociable Sim the council assumed a professional party guest must be! The ground floor was converted into two reasonably sized bedrooms, each with its own bathroom.

Ophelia was rather surprised to get the larger of the bedrooms, but Olive explained that this was so she had space to study. Actually, a secret door in Olive's room leads down to the old basement.

What do you do down there, Olive? Grow mushrooms?

N.B. The book case in Olive's room is a functional 1 tile secret door. The cooker hood is a smoke detector.

3rd Jun 2018, 8:08 PM
Jo, I think you'd better make me a play-along. I'm not going to finish my house by the deadline -- Real Life and that basement have combined to make it impossible. If I'm not mistaken that basement floor is 20 clicks below the main ground floor level, which explains why the ladder I was trying to use isn't long enough to reach! So, to save Ajay having to jump when he reaches the top rung of the ladder, I'm going to have to raise the basement floor level. Which might need CFE, which I've only used once before. Also, as it is just now, I can't place walls on that floor. I'm sure I can work it out eventually. But what I can't do is fix that floor, finish furnishing and decorating the house, arrange the garden, load the no-red-lines mod, start FRAPS, take and post all the pictures and write up my post in the next four and a half hours, while simultaneously attending to all my Real Life tasks!

Anyway you've got 14 contestants now without me -- 15 if HugeLunatic (or anyone else) submits an entry. Which looked very unlikely only a few days ago! I put my name down because I was afraid of the contest not going ahead -- I certainly didn't want to keep anyone else out of it. I think I'll enjoy the contest more as a play-along -- I can be a bit free-er if I don't have to worry about scoring.

And besides, all the entries so far are much better than my house!

3rd Jun 2018, 8:29 PM
Ajay should just learn to teleport :) :)

3rd Jun 2018, 11:49 PM

A small, modern home for Ajay, based all around his favorite color, black. It has an office for him to work from (and make money), and a telescope for counting the grains of sand in his backyard (instead of stars in the sky).

4th Jun 2018, 12:09 AM
Oh ya, entries 14 and 15 just as I came on to close application round. Congratulations @Aysarth and @Mordant17

I will be getting the judges sheets together today. :)

@AndrewGloria Sorry you missed out. :/ Please do. :)

Applications are now closed. Any more applications will now go on the play along table.

4th Jun 2018, 2:39 AM
Judges can you check in.
I have the judging sheet ready. Can everyone open Word documents? I tried changing it to .txt but it said it would not keep the cells or clickable text. If you can PM me and let me know thanks.

4th Jun 2018, 8:42 AM
Checking in, @joaandsarah77 - Yes, I can open Word documents :)

4th Jun 2018, 1:48 PM
@simsample, tell me I haven't completely lost my mind... Your avi was different yesterday wasn't it? lol. I'm glad to see it's back to the "classic" Sim pic (if I'm not crazy). I was quite shocked when I saw posts from you without Sim staring at me from over the rim of his glasses :P

4th Jun 2018, 1:52 PM
@justJones I don't know, I thought simsample's new avi was hot stuff. :D :P

4th Jun 2018, 2:20 PM

 I changed it the other day to this:
When @Calibrat made a funny comment here (http://www.modthesims.info/showthread.php?p=5394956#post5394956) .
Then I remembered the 'simmerized' avatar I had for many years and managed to find it. :)

This is the original of the 'simmerized' avatar:
Many years ago we had a 'Chuck Norris' great ideas day (April Fools) when we told everyone that MTS was sponsored by Chuck Norris. I had this avatar then:
:D

4th Jun 2018, 2:52 PM
Well, I am happy to be winked at once in a while again :)

4th Jun 2018, 6:41 PM
Ah yes, @simsample, it was the simmerized one I saw, lol.

@joandsarah77, I didn't say the new one wasn't nice ;) Just that it wasn't what I was used to, lol

4th Jun 2018, 11:13 PM
Some thoughts as a first-time judge, who has just started to work on the judging sheet, which I want to share with the contestants
You have worked hard, some contestants harder than others, but I appreciate what all of you have done.
I will try to be fair, and I hope that my comments will be helpful along the way - I will try not to make mistakes (I know to err is human, but I will still try).
If you are disappointed with your score later, I can tell you that I have ended up stone last in the first round of my first competition, but managed to take 2nd place in the end, because I just worked harder.
Never forget to have fun - you should enjoy it :)
Good luck to everyone!

4th Jun 2018, 11:33 PM
A round of applause for our judges!

This round will take longer to judge since judge 1 is moving house. If she can't judge I will step in as the emergency judge. If anybody is lurking who would like to be emergency judge feel free to put your hand up though as hosting is quite enough for me really. I only put myself down as nobody had volunteered for the position.

Karen Lorraine
4th Jun 2018, 11:44 PM
I will volunteer to be the emergency judge if you would like to have me? I have plenty of lots on my profile. Here are a couple of my uploads Northfield University Dorms (http://www.modthesims.info/download.php?t=514479), and my latest The Shelley Bungalow (http://www.modthesims.info/download.php?t=611693)

4th Jun 2018, 11:47 PM
Thanks Karen, that is much appreciated. :) Putting you down on the judging table.

5th Jun 2018, 2:51 AM
I just realized the last entry on the table shows Aysarth's entry again.

@Justpetro @yavannatw @gdayars Fixing this. It may not fix it on the judging sheet though.

6th Jun 2018, 10:44 PM
I really am struggling with the basement in this house. The trouble is that the floor of the basement is 20 clicks below the level of the floor above instead of the usual 16 clicks. I wanted to use the basement as a bedroom for Ajay with an en suite toilet and wash basin (and possibly a shower), and an additional small room that he might use for private study. To save space I wanted to use a ladder I have (actually the Climbing Mesh from Phaenoh's "It's all Wood" playground set). But the ladder isn't long enough (It's for a 16 click difference between floor levels), and when I try to place new internal walls in that basement, it just says "Covered by Floor Tile".

So basically I want to raise the basement floor level by four clicks. I thought I'd do this by using the "Split Level Interior Foundations". But, though I could place floor tiles on the raised floor, I couldn't place walls or the ladder there. I'm wondering if I can use CFE to raise that floor by 4 clicks without distorting the walls. I see other people have successfully added dividing walls inside that basement.

It makes me glad I gave up trying to take part in the contest proper -- I'm "just" a play-along now. But even as a play-along, I'll really have to post my entry soon. If I don't think of something quickly, I'll just have to finish the rest of the house and move Ajay in. And deal with the basement later. I'm actually doing this in my regular Strangetown (which I've only played for one rotation).

6th Jun 2018, 11:14 PM
@AndrewGloria I didn't even need to use CFE. I just used the terrain tool to raise one point of the ground 4 clicks, then raised the other three points around that square by 4 clicks too. The terrain level tool then allows you to make the rest of the basement level to match.

I always use a Maxis wallpaper that has a skirting board on it to do this- if you place one of those on the basement wall, you can then see how much you need to raise the terrain to make it the correct height (unlike walls, you can raise the ground right next to foundations with no problem). Once you have that right, you should be able to place walls in there with no trouble.

6th Jun 2018, 11:45 PM
I also use wallpaper. Another way is to simply leave the basement as is. I would have made this place over for Ajay and left the basement. Just seems to be the easiest choice.

7th Jun 2018, 12:05 AM
Thanks simsample and Jo! I'll do that tomorrow.

7th Jun 2018, 8:55 PM
I think we need to have a party around here right now :) Unfermented fruit juice for the judges, fermented for everyone else. Contestants should use the opportunity, since they will have to be building again soon.

BBQ and wine at the fermented fruit juice bar :Pint:

7th Jun 2018, 9:05 PM
I'll be the first to join the party!

7th Jun 2018, 9:35 PM
and i'll be second!

7th Jun 2018, 10:08 PM
Me three!! Any rosewine, perhaps, Justpetro ? :P

7th Jun 2018, 10:10 PM
If you want rosewine, there will be rosewine! :)

7th Jun 2018, 10:53 PM
Thanks for the fermented juice. Much appreciated.

:Pint: (this glass is the wrong shape though.)

Kippis to you too! <3

Very suprised I was (and like Yoda I sound like now) to see that in there :D

Kippis to you too! <3

Very suprised I was (and like Yoda I sound like now) to see that in there :D

I purposely put that in there for you ;)

8th Jun 2018, 11:44 AM
I felt like playing along, so here we go. Ajay has to keep himself busy if he is going to be a loner, so he has plenty of things to do. He can also count the new, clean sea sand grains in his backyard systematically, square by square, now. He makes robots for a living, which he sells to the (aliens in the) air. Visitors have to find the entrance at the back themselves :)

I had fun :) Edit: Added a clearer screenshot of the floor plan.

9th Jun 2018, 2:30 AM
Since I don't know how to pm pictures @yavannatw I am placing how the cells of the judging sheet should look here. You should be able to type in your scores into the cells on the sheet that I uploaded. If downloading the sheet is still giving issues I could try dropping it into a PM on Discord. The sheet you sent is fine, but if we can fix it so the real sheet works that would be preferable.

9th Jun 2018, 7:07 AM
When are you planning on posting round 2? I am curious to see what we are getting next.

9th Jun 2018, 7:21 AM
I was waiting to see how long the judges might take/giving judge one longer due to moving house, but Karen, the emergency judge is going to take over for judge 1 this round. Probably in 2-3 days? I don't want the judges to be overwelled which can happen if rounds are posted right after each other.

Ajay required "a masculine home and a way to make money". He toyed with the idea turning the basement into a dungeon and abducting Sims and holding them for ransom there. But he decided he's not like that, and anyway there's more than enough of that sort of thing going on in Strangetown already. But there doesn't seem to be a hairdresser in Strangetown yet, do he'd open a barber's shop in his house and earn an honest Simoleon that way. When he couldn't find anyone selling barbers' poles, he decided to paint the whole front of the ground floor in the red and white of the traditional pole. That would be a good way to advertise his business.

Ajay's house by night

Shortly after moving in, Ajay posed for the camera in front of his shop.

Then he went down to the basement and studied cooking recipes before the Welcome Wagon visitors arrived. Taking photographs inside the basement was not easy; the photographer apologises for the extreme wide angle lens he had to use.

At the end of the basement furthest from the ladder is Ajay's small, neat, and rather masculine bedroom.

Ajay was getting a shower when the Welcome Wagon arrived, slightly earlier than he expected at quarter past 12. So he didn't have time to get dressed before meeting them. They were Jenny Smith, Circe Beaker and Cameron Mackintosh (a CAS Sim). Ajay had spent enough time studying cooking to give them a cooked meal -- of grilled cheese sandwiches. Admittedly he burned the first batch, but he just threw them away and made more. There was so much smoke I fear there might have been a fire, had it not been for Squinge's wonderful Mo More Fires mod.

After the meal he washed up. Then he sat on the sofa and chatted with Cameron for a while.

Then he invited Cameron into his shop and gave him a free haircut. Cameron was more than happy with the result.

When they were hungry again, Ajay served up dinner. Again it was a proper cooked meal -- spaghetti -- this time without any burning. I don't think anyone had an accident: I think that puddle on the floor was the result of Circe throwing a water balloon at one of the other guests -- probably Jenny. She had been thinking of doing the same earlier, when I persuaded her to help Ajay out instead, by cleaning up the burnt sandwiches.

After dinner some of them went upstairs to look at the upper room. This is a large room which Ajay intends to use to pursue possible hobbies and interests.

Also on this floor is a spare bedroom with a double bed.

After midnight Ajay chatted on the basement sofa with his female guests. Cameron was nowhere to be seen. He turned out to be on the other side of that door -- asleep in Ajay's bed. Ajay had to shoo him out before he could get into it. After that Cameron walked home, still in his pyjamas. (His own house is only a few doors along the street.)

Late on, when Ajay was moving in, I spotted a couple of mistakes which might have cost me points (if the judges spotted them) had I been a proper contestant. There was no light fitting in the upstairs bathroom -- I'd simply forgotten it. I also omitted 3 panels of wall covering in Ajay's bedroom. As I was so near the financial limit, I couldn't fix these within the budget. I could of course have managed it by replacing some item of furniture with a cheaper alternative, but this entry was late enough already! Ajay fixed both problems the next day.

I apologise for being so very late. With hindsight it was a mistake to try to makeover this house and help Andrew with Jones's Outfit of the Day challenge at the same time, when I also have quite a few Real Life commitments. As Andrew keeps telling me, I'm hopeless at managing my time.

Yah, another play along. Thanks @AndrewGloria :D

Okay I was going to post the next round, but I'm not feeling so great so I will try later tonight (my tonight) If not I will post it tomorrow.

Round Two is posted! :bunny:

11th Jun 2018, 9:06 AM
I had a feeling it was going to be that house at some point  Am I correct in saying we only have to leave the outside walls, and can remove the pillars/stairs/weirdness on the roof?

11th Jun 2018, 9:15 AM
That's right. :) Just leave the walls in red, the rest is fair game.

11th Jun 2018, 10:26 AM
Here are some ideas from me that contestants can keep in mind:

1. Let the outside and the inside of the houses complement each other. Some of your lots have carried the outside theme over to the inside very well. While you are probably not going to lose points if yo don't do this, it may be a factor when we get to a tiebreaker.
2. Use ground cover. Not only is it free, it can really make a garden outside interesting. Not only does it make plants look better if you put some garden soil or dirt underneath them, ground cover also make nice footpaths.
3.Remember to leave enough space for Sims, especially around dining tables.
4. Try to avoid large rooms with very little in it. Either make the rooms smaller of try to fill it. While the budget is tough, the career rewards are free.
5.Remember to add something for each Sim. A child certainly has to have at least one toy or something to show off his/her hobby/interests.
6. Turn a very ugly space (the basement) into a beautiful, workable living area. Even if you are allowed to ignore the basement, some contestants did spectacular work down there which can NOT be ignored :
7. Make the back of the lot pretty too!

Here are some pics from contestants for inspiration. Believe me, there were many, many more, so I can't post all of them.

1, Try to make a stunning roof, but if you can't, make a neat one. Flat roofs can work too, especially with a god-looking edging.

2. Make use of wallpaper. And use a fence sometimes.

3. Use plants and pretty stairs

4, Use colour and a funky chair

5.Use the available space, including the area around the building:

Thank you for the helpful tips Justpetro! And thank you for posting the next round JoanandSarah! I have a hard time deciding if I choose the Grunt family or the Single Ladies family. I look forward to start building!

11th Jun 2018, 12:19 PM
That's a nice big footprint, so suitable for a larger household. I think I will use the Smiths.

11th Jun 2018, 3:29 PM
May I suggest you leave each round in the original post, rather than removing it altogether? Maybe hide in spoiler tag?

11th Jun 2018, 4:06 PM
May I suggest you leave each round in the original post, rather than removing it altogether? Maybe hide in spoiler tag?I'm really posting to express my agreement. Since it's a Maxis building, you can of course see the original in Strangetown. And I actually have a copy of that building on its original form in my Lot Catalogue if that helps anyone. The main thing that's missing now is the price. The limit is §40,000.

HugeLunatic, I'm sure Jo will still welcome you to Round 1 as a play-along. From your previous posts, it seems that you've already done a lot of work on that house, and it would be a shame not to let us see it. Please join us in the play-along table.

11th Jun 2018, 4:17 PM
I agree as well - it is something that should stay for anyone who wants to look at the contest later too.

11th Jun 2018, 4:53 PM
I also agree. It will be easier for anyone who wants to look at this contest halfway or when it is done.

Looking forward for our next reno! EDIT: Actually, never mind, I see it has already been posted. That house... Another tough one, but I think we'll see some great makeovers from every contestant. :)
Also, I've just installed a new camera mod which allows me to take better pictures. Yay! I think I will build this lot from scratch, in case I feel like sharing it after the contest's over.

And Justpetro, great advices!

11th Jun 2018, 5:25 PM
While you are building, I will take the judges and Jo drinking :)

11th Jun 2018, 9:42 PM
Good luck on the next round everyone. I look forward to some spectacular makeovers.
(I think one of the reasons I didn't get into Strangetown was that I didn't like any of the houses and couldn't be bothered making them over.)
Now I'm off to the bar.

11th Jun 2018, 10:50 PM
I took it away so that it wouldn't get messy underneath the post because of Modyourpanties being down, but I can put them back. :)

12th Jun 2018, 12:38 PM
I almost cried when I saw this round- I love this lot very much in all its Maxis quirkiness, and can't see how it could possibly be improved upon! So I've tried to repurpose it for a new family whilst keeping some of the Maxis-ness there. :bunny:

Hello, I'm Loki Beaker, and boy has it been a strange few weeks! I seem to have lost my memory- my wife has too- so we are not really sure where we are or what we are supposed to be doing. We were assigned a new home, and we've been busy remodelling it to suit our tastes- or at least, what we feel our tastes might be.

Here's the house:

Since we can't really remember how we got here, we (Circe and I) are a little conscious of security, so after we had torn down all of the bizarre platforms to regain some cash we worked on securing the site.

As you can see, the garden and rear entrances are enclosed, with a locked gate protecting our private rooms. Inside, there is a reception area with recreational activities, so that any visitors do not suspect our secret businesses.

There is a secure foyer between the ground floor reception area and the laboratories, and all of the doors are protected by keypad access locks. Circe's lab is to the left, with a small sun room and doors leading to the garden. My lab is top right, and I have rear access should I wish to go outside. Circe and I have a connecting door between our labs as we like to share ideas from time to time, and we also have a small bathroom there.

When we are not working, we have a living area with attached bathroom on the first floor. We can cook and relax whilst we listen to music, and we can even invite visitors up here. There's a terrace too, but it is very hot outside.

Our bedroom is on the second floor, and as you can see Circe has been decorating in her favourite colour, lab overall green. Circe has a dressing room, and she has quite a collection of wire coat hangers in there. We have an ensuite bathroom, and a private terrrace. The view is good.

On the next floor is a room where Circe keeps her pet.

You know, I'm not really keen on her having pets- this one seems none too bright and he has some sort of nervous disorder- but he was with us when we arrived here, and Circe wanted to keep him for testing purposes. This room is the only area of the house he's allowed in- he has a bed and a chair, and I was all for keeping him in the dark but Circe gave him some battery lights. He doesn't need a lavatory as he goes in the shower! Circe's pet has access to this area and the adjoining roof terrace via external stairs, so he does not ever have to enter my quarters.

Right up on the top terrace we have some equipment to harness wind power, and also an antenna. Power and communication are very important when you are interested in the sciences, as Circe and I are.

Here's the lot price:

The enclosed garden, which has nothing but the washing line so far. Maybe Circe can train her pet to dig?

This is the main entrance, showing the security call box and staircase to the pet's area.

This is the reception area, with chess board, TV lounge and a computer desk to the right. You can see our extra security measures protecting the laboratories.

The kitchen and lounge:

And another view of our bedroom.

Circe's lab has all sorts of specimens in it. She likes to take things apart to find out how they work, and if they don't go together again she'll stuff and mount them, or maybe pickle them in a jar.

She acquired a lie detector and is hoping to use it to recover memories from her pet.

:D She does love her wire coat hangers, bless her!

This is my lab, and you must keep secret anything you see here! I have some very important inventions to perfect, as soon as I can remember what they were.

For now, I'm working on powering the entire facility with nuclear fusion. I just have a few glitches to work out...

Oh, the pet? Yes, here he is, and what a worthless cur! He blinks and twitches a lot, so Circe built him an exercise wheel... I am planning to hook it up to a generator. For science, of course!

  :bunny: :llama: :duck:

Cool stuff simsample I love the windmill on the roof! :D

Scores should be posted sometime later tomorrow-my tomorrow. :D Right now it's 9.40 pm and I have about half done.

That's right. :) Just leave the walls in red, the rest is fair game.

Thanks Jo! I might try to work in some of the columns but I'm very glad not to be stuck with that roof!

I will look at your great work later, @simsample, first I have to stop laughing.

just droppin' by to let you guys know I'm alive and well--well intrigued by this new contest!
strangetown is a place I really didn't like form the get go so it's interesting to see all these creative takes on those ...bothersome (for me) structures!

man I have a lot to catch up on

Application/Round 1 Judging Scores and Comments

Notes from Judge 1
I have deducted half a point where I thought applicable in every category across the board; and where I had to, I gave the better entry more points (because some of you did a lot of things right, but other contestants just did it better). That narrow entrance has playability issues and you should have moved it. If there is no other entry/exit door on that floor, you made the playability issues worse.
The landscaping was a bit disappointing — the rules say you can change the terrain. It is a requirement to give something to every sim living in the house and some of you forgot to do that.
Credit to those who remember to put lights outside.

Dining chairs and tables need space around them to be used by sims without playability issues. There should really be one tile around the table and the chairs, especially if you use more than 2 chairs.
Some of you have done everything right, but other contestants just did it better 😊

Notes from Jo
Due to comments being in a table I had to remove all comma's (they create cells)
For grid free photos click either the 3 dots or the swatch tool.
Take plenty of photos and get in close with floor plans so that the judges can see everything easily.
Don't forget the needs of each family.
I will be adding comments later, but for now on with the scores!

Judge One,4.5,4.5,4,4.5,5,22.5,Stylish house for a manly man. I find the fence in the front of the entrance is a bit distracting. Ajay’s bedroom is huge and seems a bit empty. While the décor is absolutely stunning in some places other parts are empty — I feel as if you have not reached your full potential here.
Judge Two,4.5,4,4.5,4.5,5,22.5, I like the exterior industrial look but am not a fan of the dark wood. There are seemingly random strips of brick inside. I love the stairwell. A lot of empty space upstairs but a poky kitchen.
Judge Three,4.5,4,5,5,5,22.5, The house definitely has kerb appeal now! I really like the window detail to the front aspect of the house very functional and decorative too! I have taken points away because of the lack of landscaping- sorry.

Judge One,4,4.5,4,4.5,4.5,22,A handsome house. The roof does cover the windows a bit and you can work on that. Inside there are too many empty spaces. Try to move the furniture away from the walls where possible and arrange them differently. I don’t see mushrooms and there is no sign of Ophelia’s interests.
Judge Two,4.5,4,4,4.5,5,21, I like how you made it a traditional gothic-looking house with suitably gothic interior. There's a bit much empty space making it look a bit sparse inside. The kitchen looks awkward especially access to the fridge. I didn't like the orangey brown carpet with floral black wallpaper. I like the secret entrance to the basement.
Judge Three,4,4,4,5,4.5,21.5, The butterfly wallpaper in the niece’s bedroom is very cute. The rooms seem overly large or under-decorated in my opinion. It is also quite difficult to see what is in the rooms as they are all so dark. I can’t see an air quality item for Olivia.

Judge One,4,4,4,4.5,4,20.5, You have started this lot very well with the pretty cutouts in the walls but you have not pulled it through all the way. No lawn for PT9 and no dolphins or even a toy for Jill?
Judge Two,5,4.5,4,4.5,4,22, I love the exterior and the use of the small rooms as al fresco. Good layout upstairs. The foyer and kitchen look empty. It's a long way from the kitchen to the outdoor eating area. There's no indoor eating area for when the weather isn't so suitable. To me the lounge room wallpaper clashes with the carpet and brown seating and I'm not a huge fan of the kitchen wallpaper. No reference to Jill's love of the sea or dolphins and there's no lawn!
Judge Three,5,3.5,4.5,5,4.5,22.5, I really like the look of this house from the outside. The cut-out porches are gorgeous. I like the planting around this part of the house too-I wish you had continued it some more around the rest of the space. Unfortunately you missed the lawn and there is nothing for Jill to play with or anything to do with her aspirations or dreams. I feel that the whole house is rather sparsely decorated and furnished. There is a huge hallway without much in it.

Simoleon37 ,Build,Outside,Inside, Playability,Suitability,Total,Comment
Judge One,4.5,4,4.5,4,5,22, Good placement of furniture but the house is very dark. (A rug or carpet here and there would break up that floor). The roof in combination with the large windows- will look better with a different edging that can make it look higher. I like the Greek decorations although perhaps the statue in the kitchen may have looked better in another room.
Judge Two,4.5,4,4.5,4,5,22, The roof looks a bit too flat. Perhaps a low fence or border to lift it a little. A bit of landscaping was needed. I thought the flooring was too dark- perhaps something a bit more industrial or modern. I wonder about access to the oven which is in the archway as well as the narrow mezzanine behind which a Sim could get stuck. There appears to be no shower or bath in the main bathroom which has a lot of empty space. Cute little patio area and great that you have something for Nervous to wear himself out.
Judge Three,4,4,4,4,4,20, Nice use of the CC windows. There is so little landscaping and terrain sculpting here! I like the ballet barre in Nervous’ room. But where is the nuclear reactor that Loki is making I can’t see anything that would allude to that. I do like the cow plant —very funny! Is the bar useable on the diagonal? Also there is a one tile walkway that will most probably cause foot stomping issues.

Judge One,5,5,5,5,5,25, A Perfect Job 😊 I would have given you a bonus point for making that stupid entrance usable for something if I could 😊
Judge Two,5,5,5,4.5,5,24.5,Amazing — unrecognisable! I love the landscaping. I just took half a point off for access to the pool even though he's a loner. (Some visitor might decide to invite themselves for a swim.)
Judge Three,5,5,5,5,5,25, I really like the look of this house. You have packed so much into it! I like the fishable pond as a way of making money and you even managed to sell the boot!

Modder,Build,Outside,Inside, Playability,Suitability,Total,Comment
Judge One,4.5,4.5,5,4.5,4.5,23, One of my favourites in this round. The contrast between the two floors are terrific. I also really like the fence. Nervous should really have some exercise equipment (read the rules — something for every sim) — even if it is just a yoga mat.
Judge Two,5,4.5,5,4.5,4.5,23.5, I'm loving the stark industrial look suitable for secret research. It has a great clinical look with a suitable glass-walled room for observation - fantastic. I'm not a fan of TVs facing outwards in the middle of the room and I don't like the lift entrance/exit being right next to the TV.
Judge Three,5,4,5,5,5,24, Great attention to detail here! Love the layout and use of items- and poor Nervous! More landscaping would’ve made it even better though.

Quicksylver,Build,Outside,Inside, Playability,Suitability,Total,Comment
Judge One,4.5,4.5,4,4.5,4.5,22, I like the outside of the house. The windows can be placed better. Love the colours and the rugs. The inside walls are a bit empty and there should be an outside light on the roof porch. A special hobby item (or more) for Ajay would be nice too.
Judge Two,5,4,4.5,4.5,5,23, I like how the small spaces at the front are used as a stairwell and reading nook. Nice spacious kitchen but Sims sitting at the breakfast bar would have a cupboard in their face. I like the pops of colour.
Judge Three,4,4,4,5,4.5,21.5, The house definitely has a southwestern vibe going on there! I’m not sure that this house says masculine to me I’m afraid. The bright bedroom colours look eclectic. I like the old fashioned typewriter :)

Motheringthesims,Build,Outside,Inside, Playability,Suitability,Total,Comment
Judge One,3.5,3.5,3.5,4,5,19.5, I think this can be the start of some amazing building to come. The roof is not perfect and it covers the windows- so rather use a flat roof to avoid that. Since you aimed for a modern house a flat roof would be more modern. I appreciate that you have tried to landscape the whole garden but the plants seem scattered; putting them in groups would make a huge difference — the garden should reflect the modern look as well. Your décor has a good start but do not put beds against curtains. (again blinds may have been more modern) Try to avoid large empty spaces (living room and kitchen) and I feel the dining table and chairs need a tile wide space around them for sims to sit down and get up easily. I also like that you made a back porch.
Judge Two,4,4,5,4.5,5,22.5, Nice big windows. The roof needs some work - try to get the ridges meeting. Take pics without grid lines showing (easily done by clicking on the swatch tool). There is a fair bit of empty space in the foyer kitchen area. I felt there may be a playability issue with the table and chairs- with a Sim potentially being stuck in the corner. I love the splashes of red.
Judge Three,4,3,4,5,4,20, I like the red colour scheme in the kitchen and lounge area and I like your choice of bedding in the bedrooms. I am not too keen on the exterior of the property. There doesn’t seem to be anything for Ajay to make money from on the lot though.

Judge One,4.5,5,4.5,4.5,4.5,23, One of my favourite entries as well in this round. Very pretty roof- lovely outside and inside. I just wished you moved that entrance.
Judge Two,5,4.5,5,5,3.5,23, I really like the exterior. Nice design! There's a good use of space and it feels homely. Interior decoration is great. I like it. However I'm not getting a sense of the characters from the bedrooms apart from Kristen.
Judge Three,5,4.5,5,5,5,24.5, Gorgeous inside and out! The only negative is it could’ve done with some more landscaping! But at least yours has some! I like all the little décor touches in this house- definitely decorated for females :)

Flickstar,Build,Outside,Inside, Playability,Suitability,Total,Comment
Judge One,4,4.5,4.5,4.5,4.5,22, Good effort from you. I like the landscaping. The roof choice is not the best one. Good to see landscaping at the back of the lot and a nice porch. The inside is well done- and I like Olive’s room. I also like what you did with the basement. I don’t see something for Ophelia’s interests?
Judge Two,4.5,4.5,4.5,4.5,4.5,22.5, Your blurb is written like it's being sold generally and not to a family with specific requirements. Ophelia's requirements are not mentioned. Nice little kitchen but there's a bit of empty space beside it. I like the pond and the 'excavating' tools.
Judge Three,4,3,4,5,4,20, I like the interesting array of things in the basement for Olive to do. I can’t see anything for Ophelia to monitor the air quality with though. I would’ve liked to have seen more landscaping. There seems to be quite a lot of unused space. The images are very dark so it makes it quite hard to see what has been placed.

Judge One,3.5,3.5,3.5,4,5,19.5, The house is pretty. I like the green walls. The landscaping (or the lack of it) — remember that ground cover is free and it can be used to create a variety of effects. Inside the walls are very empty and one bedroom has no window. (I know the budget is hard for 4 bedrooms). The bedrooms are well divided but the passage is only one tile wide and that may cause some stomping. The screenshots need to be without the UI — I can live with the size but the gridlines bother me.
Judge Two,4,3.5,4,4,3,18.5, Some plants or landscaping would be good. I'm not seeing characters reflected in bedrooms or activities. (Leopard print doesn't necessarily say romance to me.) The front bedroom has a large waste of space while the hallway is narrow (potentially a problem for 4 Sims). Downstairs also has wasted space while the lounge is poky. There are no windows in the back bedroom and ensuite which would have brightened them. Could have done with a bathroom upstairs instead of 2 downstairs. Nice kitchen.
Judge Three,4,3.5,4,5,4.5,21, The house has an interesting layout. The décor is very basic and there aren’t many décor or furnishing items to enhance the rooms. Landscaping is non-existent.

Judge One,4.5,5,4.5,4.5,4.5,23, I love it. I think the back entrance should be the main one- perhaps with a path leading there instead of the front one- which I see as not very playable. A bit of groundcover could have been used at the back (shame poor Nervous) — good use of the basement. You did not give Nervous anything though.
Judge Two,5,4,5,4.5,4.5,23, Nice aspect. Stylish exterior and interior decor. However there's lots of empty space in the top bedroom. I would have liked more interior shots.
Judge Three,5,4,3.5,5,5,22.5, I like the choice of wall coverings for the exterior. The two labs work very well in those two front rooms. The bedroom and bathroom for Loki and Circe are very basic though. There is very little landscaping :)

Judge One,4,4,5,4.5,5,23, Winning the story part in my opinion. I would have liked to give a bonus point for that — especially for Olive’s imaginary friend 😊 Somehow you did get that house to look better even without changing that awful roof and some other awful things. The inside décor is spectacular and so is what you did with the basement. I love the boots on the back porch. Surely Olive could have marked her future gravesite with some groundcover or something since she has plans to start digging?
Judge Two,4,4,4.4.5,4.5,5,22, Congrats on keeping everything on one level. Good use of space although I still don't like the kitchen being in that corner. Colourful decor - someone likes green!
Judge Three,4.5,4,5,5,4,22.5, Great build I love the way you’ve done the windows on the corners to the front aspect. You have an eclectic colour scheme going on but it works! Nice and bright too! Needed some more landscaping for me though. There is no hint of dead husbands and no graves. I do like the added solar panel and the weather station for Ophelia.

Aysarth,Build,Outside,Inside, Playability,Suitability,Total,Comment
Judge One,4.5,4,4,4.5,4.5,22, The outside is good but space should be left for the graves. The top floor seems very empty to me even if I keep space for dancing in mind - but I like the party lights. The bedrooms are nice - again a very empty area between them and that green wall behind the stairs need something to make it interesting. Love the mushrooms in the basement!
Judge Two,5,4.5,4.5,4.5,5,23.5, Nice exterior and terrain paint. Interesting having the main living areas upstairs. However there's lots of empty space. There was room for the table and chairs to be more centred. The fireplace to one side looked a bit odd to me. A lot of grey and brown. I love that you had reference to Ophelia's hypochondria.
Judge Three,4,4,4,5,4,21,Interesting layout choice - making the bedrooms on the ground floor. I feel the living area needs more adding to it as it’s rather sparsely decorated. I can’t see any evidence of Olive’s late husband’s either. How does Ophelia monitor the weather?

Judge One,4.5,4.5,4,5,4.5,22.5, I like the gardening here and the large windows. I love the fact that you got rid of that entrance and the new one looks good. I would have liked the roof to have a different edge to make it seem a bit higher with the large windows. Inside there are some empty spaces and empty walls and the sofa in front of the television is against a counter with a kitchen sink (it could be placed one tile forward).
Judge Two,4.5,4,4.5,5,5,23, Nice bachelor pad! A nice use of space with an original layout. I love the cactus garden.
Judge Three,5,4,5,5,5,24, This screams bachelor to me I love it! I really like how you’ve moved the front entrance and filled up the space left behind with plants. I think I might have made all the windows and doors the same colour though.

Thank you judges for the scores and comments. :)

@Justpetro , I would very much hope to have a cold Fanta with ice from the bar? :) I have planted so many roses up there near the sky at the ex Curious house that Í have no desire to have rosewine, maybe ever again :P

13th Jun 2018, 12:46 PM
@Kukamuukaanmuka; You may have a cold Fanta, although I don't think it is the correct way to celebrate winning a round myself. What you really should have is a big bottle of champagne, and handle it like a princess does (a South African one, of course) :)

Congratulations to all the contestants; you all did well, and this is still wide open! Reminding you all again that I grabbed a second place in my first contest after ending stone last in the first round :)

Ah forget Princess Charlene, drink it like Patrick Stewart!

( :D Does Danny Riccardo ever stop smiling?)

There is more champagne in the bottle  (Yes, DannyRic stops smiling when Max crashes into him)

My 2nd favourite Aussie - Jo is number 1 :)

13th Jun 2018, 6:08 PM
Ah yes, Jo is my number 1 too. :)

13th Jun 2018, 11:49 PM
Aww you guys.

14th Jun 2018, 1:48 AM
darn, Justpetro has the same timezone as I have (yes still living pretty opposite side of the globe, but at the same line if we draw a line from north to south :) ) So she must be at sleep as I assume not as nightowl as I :)

I need my Fanta , lol, I refuse to have anything what is stronger than milk :D

You might want to check the table to be sure it links to your entry and that your scores are correct since I can make mistakes. If you click on 'Score' it will take you to the page that the comments and scores are on. If you click totals it will order the table so you can see where you are ranking.

Also if you feel the judges missed something or you have any query over your comment or score feel free to say so.

Has there ever been a group of roommates so different from one another? As if living in Strangetown isn't hard enough, will these girls be able to accept their differences and be friends or will the tension tear the house apart?

Right off the bat, I noticed Kristen, Chloe, and Lola were VERY interested in the environment. Erin has medium-low interest, but she's the outlier. I decided to give the ladies a nice environmentally-friendly makeover of 2 Cover Up Road with as much flora as possible (but not a full lawn, since that's a waste of water and not good for the environment.... *cough* looking at you, Mr. Pollination Tech #9). I also wanted to give Kristen a place to work out, Chloe a cool pad to throw parties at, Lola a space to work, and Erin a place to... uh... enhance her psychic powers.

Pics of the girls enjoying their new home:

Cool! Love it. :D

14th Jun 2018, 4:18 AM
Thanks @joandsarah77 I always hate making over the Curious Brothers' house whenever I start a new playthrough of Strangetown, but it was really fun to design the lot for another family! I'm really excited to see what everyone else comes up with, especially since the higher lot value limit means we can do more decorating :)

14th Jun 2018, 4:28 AM
@Modder How did you find the budget on the last two lots? I am only guessing at what I think is a reasonable figure.

14th Jun 2018, 4:39 AM
I really appreciated the detailed feedback from judge one, but judge twos seemed a bit brief. They deducted several points, but their comment was all positive. Although I'm clear on where the lot could have been improved, I would really have appreciated hearing their specific reasoning.

Also, @joandsarah77 the points from judge two only add up to 23, making my total 69.5, not 70.5

14th Jun 2018, 6:07 AM
Oops, sorry @Mordant17 I will fix that.

14th Jun 2018, 8:15 AM
Looking good, @Modder :)
@Ka....(simmer with the really loooooong name) - we should at least pour the Fanta into an empty champagne bottle, I think :)
@simsample - I will put Mark at number 3 of my list of favourite Aussies then :)
The fermented fruit juice bar is open! For normal people and for Fanta drinkers!

Pretty good, I like the amounts so far. They seem appropriate for each lot.

@Modder Just a heads up: The recliners don't work on the diagonal, there are playability points at stake here :P

@Modder Just a heads up: The recliners don't work on the diagonal, there are playability points at stake here :P

Wait, really? I've only had that issue with the cheap plastic, wooden, and tiki chairs. The other recliners work fine

Hope everyone has seen their scores and knows that the second round has been up a few days.

@Yvelotic2001 Very industrial stylish. I like those lights.

@NatteryakToad Creepy. I like the cow plant down the basement.

@muridae I like the outside and the cutouts. I also like that you used those funny front areas for something else.

@Simoleon37 Cool slanted window openings. Also quite creepy, don't think I would want to be their 'guest'.

@Kukamuukaanmuka I love the use of water and that you moved the entrance. I was hoping to see the entrance moved.

@Modder I love that your house looks like a lab and that you changed what those little front areas are used for.

@quycksylver Happy to see those front areas used for other purposes. I like the retro vibe.

@motheringthesims Interesting was my first thought looking at the front. I like the colour scheme and that large footprint bathmat.

@randomlyyellstuff Very nice roof line and pretty colours. I like how you decorated.

@Flickstar Good thinking to use that small area for a nectar bar and dining area. I like the 'friendly' kitchen. Cool oven.

@Emerald1234 Good job fitting 4 ladies in this place. Nice bathroom floor tiles.

@Marleen267 very sleek and modern. I like how those two small areas became lab rooms.

@simsample Clever use of keeping that roof. I like the family painting next to Olive.

@Aysarth I like the orange feature wall and mushrooms down the basement.

@Mordant17 I like your kitchen placement, clever. Also a moved entrance! yes, I was looking for that.

14th Jun 2018, 1:52 PM
@muridae I like the outside and the cutouts. I also like that you used those funny front areas for something else.

Thanks, Jo. The idea for using the cutouts was my main reason for throwing my hat into the ring in the first place, so I'm glad you liked them. I can't play at the moment, as my main computer is in storage while decorating goes on and the laptop would melt if I tried to play on that. It can just about cope with building though, so the contest is very timely.

My scores all add up fine, thanks.

I do have one question for the judges, as much for the benefit of anyone who might house the Smiths in future as for my own curiosity. Do they consider PT9's lawn to be mandatory? I made a design decision not to break out the terrain paint and add one, as I considered that it spoiled the aesthetic of what I was aiming for with the house exterior, but as his bio also listed cloudwatching and stargazing I gave him roof access and a telescope instead.

Jill's interest in the sea is a fair cop though. I simply ran out of money and couldn't afford the pool I wanted to build her, or even a suitable toy. So I did the best I could by starting to dig a pool with the terrain tools, since that was free, but knew it was a bit of a kludge. When I can get back to the main computer and SimPE/Photo Studio again I shall give her a nice seascape painting to make up for it.

I think the target spend is challenging, but reasonable. I could probably have done with another 5K for house one, but it was my own decision to house a family of four and use all those expensive cutouts. I think it would have worked out fine for a smaller household.

14th Jun 2018, 2:58 PM
It's me that wants the lawn green. Mainly because I don't believe PT9 would have anything else-and the families are the ones doing the makeover. Even if it's only a small patch that showed he was trying for a green lawn. Having the lot feel like it was that family doing the makeover is an important part of the challenge. Without that there would not be much of a challenge since the only rule is to keep the shell.

I was expecting people to pick the smaller families this round to save money, but whatever family you pick is fine.

14th Jun 2018, 3:13 PM
That's fine. Lawns are good. I'm sure he'd start sowing one the moment he moved in. Just thought I'd check so that everyone else who uses the family knows to add one.

14th Jun 2018, 3:31 PM
As a judge:
The thing about this competition is that you are not just building a house, you are building a house for a specific family and with specific individuals in the family. If you look at PT9's bio, it is not just that he likes it, his lawn is one of the most important things in his life. That is why it should be there.

With a tight budget, it is still very important not to neglect any family member. If you have left out the telescope (sims can stargaze without one; it is also expensive) you could easily have given Jill a toy or two (and some nautical wallpaper would have been perfect).

I really hope you will continue, because your house was a very good start. We all make mistakes when we take part in contests (I may hold some kind of record there myself - forgetting required stairs and required second bathrooms at times). That is how we learn to build better in the end.

14th Jun 2018, 4:10 PM
May I just explain why I didn't use terrain paint in my house. I usually do use green terrain paint in my lots. But this is Strangetown, and Strangetown is in the middle of a sandy desert. Moreover I was building a house for Ajay Loner, who is reputed to like counting the grains of sand on his lot. Now grass doesn't grow in a desert without a lot of watering, and Ajay didn't show any interest in anything like that. (In fact PT9 seems to be the only resident of Strangetown with any interest in gardening, and he only does it to show how human he is. Olive I'm sure has her own reasons for digging in her garden. ;)) So I left Ajay's garden full of sand, so he has plenty of grains to count. He put a few plants round the entrance to his barber's shop to make it look attractive to customers, because that's where his income is going to come from. But that's the full extent of his interest in plants or gardening.

14th Jun 2018, 4:32 PM
Ajay's bio doesn't say a lawn is important to him either, @AndrewGloria :) It wasn't required to use terrain paint either, it is just a cheap (free, actually) way to do some landscaping when you have a tight budget. Also, not all terrain paint is green (I obviously do not know which ones you have) - but dirt and garden soil and the mixed rocks can be used for paths, edges, etc. The mixed rocks terrain paint is what I used between the wood floors here for the Evans house in Jo's other competition, because I ran out of money too!

Can I just mention that two judges commented on Olive's lack of dead husbands on her made over lot?

...What dead husbands? If Olive has lost her memory, she won't know about them. Unless the graves were abducted along with everyone else?

@Justpetro: thanks for the judges POV. As you say, it's about learning, and some of that is about how to interpret the rules. The judges are working on that "most important thing in his life", whereas I read that and thought yes, the lawn is the most important thing to him, but it also says he enjoys staring at the sky so a telescope might also make him happy... even if not as happy.

My fault, of course - I should have asked for a ruling before deadline, so I could have switched things around. But of course it's always easier to be wise after the event. :)

Did we have a fermented juice bar around here somewhere? I still have two households debating which one of them gets house two, so I've got some time to kill while the pixels figure it out...

 Yes, that's what I was thinking, too, I gave her a spade and a pair of wellies because she had a feeling she might like to do some digging one day. :giggler:

14th Jun 2018, 7:38 PM
Of course we have a fermented fruit juice bar :) And it is always open too!

According to her bio, Olive has graves. She may not remember whose graves they are or why she has them, but she has graves :)

Let's have a colorful party - for inspiration :)

Well, excavations, at least!
Olive will stop at nothing to get what she wants. She spends her time collecting mushrooms, sharpening sticks, and excavating her yard.

I was actually dreading making over this house because I had zero clue what to do with it, but I think it turned out alright! Because the lot is quite big, I decided to have the Singles move in here; they're all able to have their own room. Without further ado, here's what I did with 2 Cover Up Road.

*The Golden Girls theme song starts playing*

Even though it wasn't my intention, it did end up getting a bit of a Golden Girls vibe in my opinion. I apologize that you can't see the front very well, all the greenery gets in the way; this is the closest I was able to get it.

This is the full lot!

The final price: $79,852.

This is the ground (and only) floor. The house was large enough to fit everything downstairs, methinks.

Here's the roof. Peep the solar panels :)

This is the view as one enters the house. The doors lead to the girls' rooms and their bathrooms, and the arch straight ahead leads to the games room. I admit that having the bedrooms at the front of the house is a bit unusual, but I think it worked out okay. This was the best place I was able to put them, anyway.

The first room to the left of the hallway is Lola's room. She's our serious politician, hence the bookcase and office clutter. Nothing says "serious politician" like office clutter. Her room is green and a lot of her decorations are natured themed. Since her interest in environment is high, I figured she'd be part of some environmentalist activist groups and would eventually end up joining a Green political party. It is at her insistence that they had those solar panels installed on the roof.

Across the hall from Lola is Kristen's room. Her decorations are, obviously, sports themed. She also has one of those stationary bike things (can you tell I don't exercise?) to use for training. Her old university football jersey is hung up on the wall, to remind her of all those matches she and her teammates won.

Next to Lola's room is Erin's. Her decorations are sort of pseudo-Bohemian; at least it's what I attempted with the rug and the bed spread. I chose purple as Erin's colour because it symbolizes intuition, or so I'm told by the internet, and she'd need a lot of that if she wants to be a psychic. Some of her deco objects also point to this hobby of hers: she has Tarot cards spread on her table (where she sometimes entertains her friends by predicting ridiculous events, like the end of the world), a dream catcher to absorb those negative energies, and a little Tiki statue she found at a flea market (she believes it protects her from negative energy, too).

Across Erin's is Chloe's room. I went with lots of reds here because she's a romance sim and nothing says romance like red, am I right? Anyway, I was at a bit of a loss as to what to put in the room besides a bed and an end table. Since Chloe is said to be a social person who wants to get to know people, I just added a little nook with two arm chairs where she could sit and talk with one of her girlfriends.

Between each of the rooms is a small bathroom, which the two girls on either side of it share. So, Erin and Lola share a bathroom, and Chloe and Kristen share the other. I only took pictures of the one bathroom, but the other is identical except for the colour scheme.

Leaving the hallway, we are now in the games/hobby room. The girls can come here to relax and play pool, or paint a picture, or work out. The posters of aliens on the wall are Erin's, and the movie poster featuring a surfer is Kristen's.

Next is the living room, which also features a bar. The four stars are the wall symbolize the four girls. Lola also brought a lot of plants in here...

The dining room features not only a table and chairs, but a wardrobe drinks cabinet and a wine rack! I imagine that here they keep wines and things to have with dinner, while the bar is the hard stuff for cocktails.

The kitchen is pretty standard, though it features one of the two cork boards in the house (the other being in the games room, though it's not pictured due to its being on the wall opposite the one I took a picture of). I imagine that Lola (who's a bit bossy and a bit of a control freak) pins notes on here like "Erin, it's your turn to do the dishes" and "Kristen, please don't leave your work out clothes in the games room", that type of thing.

Off the kitchen is another bathroom, because I figured that having both bathrooms on one side of the house was asking for trouble. If they're spending time in the pool and have to spend a penny, as it were, they won't have to cross the whole house and drip water everywhere (which Lola also hates, by the way). Or, more likely, if the other two bathrooms are engaged, there's always a third one.

And speaking of the pool, here it is! There are also some lounge chairs and a grill!

And lastly, this is a shot of the little garden-alcove-thing out front. The little garden path snakes from the front gate all the way to either the pool and the front door, and anyone traveling to either of those places will pass a few patches and clumps of desert greenery here and there. So if they want some shade, they can sit down. Or if Kristen wants to practice her soccer skills, she can do that too! Or if either of the Curious girls want to say hello to their relatives, there's also a telescope here.

That's it for round two! I can't wait to see what everyone else has done :)

14th Jun 2018, 11:36 PM
Just finished my build, after three failed decorating attempts. When I find the time, I'll post my official entry.

15th Jun 2018, 9:24 AM
Round 2 was a tricky one that I had to get done quickly so I'd have time to study for my upcoming exams, but hopefully I did it justice.

[Note] The roof in the middle of the tower was not an aesthetic choice and had to be done so the roof underneath it would go away. It was the only way I could find to keep the roof tiles from showing in the tower on the third floor.

Please welcome the Grunt's to their new home.

As a military family of course it was vital that the Grunt's have access to the best military obstacle course this side of Sim City. This along with the rough looking exterior shows that this is not a family to be messed with.

Entering inside you can see a whole other side to the house, as it welcomes you with a bright modern entry way, straight into the lounge room. On the TV is the sports channel, a favourite of Tank's.

Just off the kitchen is a fully stocked gym with everything you'd ever need to get in ship shape. With weights, a treadmill, a punching bag, and a couple of mats to unroll and do stretches on. Towards the back of the room is a whiteboard to draw out workout plans. Buck has moved his play table in here, so he can be closer to his father as he works out.

Moving further into the house, we reach the kitchen and dining area. With the striking colour scheme brought in from the lounge, the kitchen is clean and orderly. Leave one bowl out of place and you'll have the General on your back asking for 50 push ups. Off to the side, out of frame, is a juice bar, perfect for entertaining your old squad mates.

In a place with as nice weather as Strangetown it's insane not to have an outdoor eating area. Hot days are perfect for a barbecue, and everyday's a hot day in Strangetown. Next to the patio is a swing set that Buck likes to swing on while watching the General and Tank run the obstacle course.

A shower in the downstairs bathroom is a necessity, so mud isn't dragged from outside all the way through the house.

A no nonsense man calls for a no nonsense bedroom, which is exactly what we have provided for the General. The only extravagances here are an ensuite bathroom and a door leading out to the balcony.

Tank looks up to his dad and wants to be just like him on the outside, but his bedroom shows his true desire. Tank's dream is not to become a General like his father, but to be a sport's journalist for the Sim Herald. You might think no one know's who you really are Tank, but the town council does.

Ripp know's it's cool to rebel against your parents and authority figures (and hey, his dad is both of these things), so he needs a room to reflect this. Using the classic colours of teen angst (black and red) we've created a haven for Ripp where parents and high wound older brothers dare not enter.

Now for the mostly forgotten Buck, the smallest room, but the one with the most personality. Showing his love of dogs with not one, but two (2nd one not pictured) dog posters, the General still missed the hint and got him an ant farm for his birthday. Oh well Buck, there's always next year.
In the meantime you can keep yourself busy with the fish.

And lastly the place you never want to go in a house with 4 males, the main bathroom. Hopefully the flowers will mask the inevitable smell that's yet to come.

15th Jun 2018, 8:25 PM
Loving the entries already in! @Flickstar, I do tend, with a general in the house, those bathrooms will be shiny, though :) Drinks on the house for all the contestants!

15th Jun 2018, 9:44 PM
Here is my entry for round 2. I have chosen the singles family. I decided to build a large modern home with enough space for them to live together and invite friends over. The house now includes a swimming pool area as well as a pooltable for parties and a telescope so the alien twins can stargaze and perhaps meet their family. There are four bedrooms, two bathrooms and a small toilet. The bedrooms are decorated according to the family members biography:

- Chloe Singles - she is a romance sim and likes to spend time with people so I gave her room a reddish wallpaper, a mirror to practice her social skills, a large bed and a dresser with make-up and flowers. I chose candles for lightning.
- Erin Singles - her biography says she thinks she has paranormal gifts. When I read that I immediately thought of a crystal ball, tarot cards and some antiques. I chose furniture for her room that I think she would buy in the second hand shop and I decorated with lots of 'weird' stuff she would find there as well.
- Kristen Singles - she wants to be a sports star so I think of her as the tomboy and tried to make her room not very 'girly'. I also put in some gym equipment so she can stay fit and train for her sports career.
- Lola Singles - I felt like she is the serious one and studies a lot so I kept her room neutral and gave Lola her own study with a large desk and a bookcase.

I didn't submit for round one, so if that's not allowed I'll just play along :)
I'm not a fan of decorating, but I was inspired to build a new home and this challenge perfectly fit that.

The Smiths are what I consider traditionally unique. They try their best to fit in since they know they are very clearly different (hint, it's the green skin). So with that they remodeled the eclectic house that resided on 2 Cover Up Road into a familiar suburban home. Obvious heavy use of a certain color as the lady of the house is particularly fond of it ;)

The entrance of the home, showing off some of PT's treasured garden.

Right to the left of the main door is a little computer alcove. It's the family computer and the children but be monitored of course :P

The open plan kitchen and dining room. Jenny is busy making some cookies for her family and Johnny is of course chatting on the phone with Ophelia Nigmos.

The family room which is separated from the rest of the main floor. Originally I had it all open plan, but I thought a distinct living room was more appealing.

The cozy bay window overlooking the backyard. Everyone's a sucker for window seating and the Smith's are not excluded!

The simple master bedroom for PT and Jenny. With my favorite feature of the house, their exclusive patio overlooking the pool (and a special telescope for PT).

Just one shot of Johnny's uniquely shaped room. He of course also has a desk to study at and a lift machine to keep in tip-top shape.

And of course, we have Jill's room with many hints to her interest in animals and marine life. I'm glad I was able to take advantage of the mirror placement to show off the other side of the room.

To close up, here's another shot of the backyard. I love the little birdhouses and can totally see the family crafting them together.

Loving all the different house shapes everyone is getting from the same base. :D

@deadhead_kay I imagine you'll be made a play along as we already have the required number of contestants. Nice house!

16th Jun 2018, 11:56 PM
Sorry you guys, I totally forgot about play along comments!

@Justpetro One of my favourite things about this is Ajay's grided off sand counting area, very creative solution to a tricky want! His dark house has that 'stay away!' vibe. Your floor plans are too far away for me to see. I am having to squint hard to even tell that's a kitchen. Good masculine colour scheme.

@AndrewGloria I really like your garden, good use of desert plants. Practical floor plan, Ajay has plenty of room there. I like his basement. I don't care for the red and white paint on the house, that would draw peoples attention. I don't think he would want all those people through his house either since the guy came to Strangtown to be alone. I guess it grew on him fast!

17th Jun 2018, 7:52 AM
Thank you, Jo, I will pay attention to the floor plan shots :)

Added a better floor plan shot in case anyone wants to see it better.

Editing... Done now.

The Smiths are in many ways a typical suburban family, at least, as PT9 understand it. And, a suburban family person's home is his castle.

The Smiths also clashed with the Council over the zoning regulations. Only desert appropriate landscaping is allowed, so no lawn! However, the Council was forced to concede that an oasis counts as desert appropriate! But PT got his lawn anyway. He put it on the flat roof, where the Council can't see it.

The living space is open plan, so Jenny can still be with her family while cooking. The study corner is where PT clips his coupons.

Upstairs is mainly for the children. They each have a bedroom, and share a bathroom and play space. Johnny is into purple at the moment. He would have painted the whole room purple if his parents had allowed it. I bet he hates that colour six months from now.

PT was concerned over Jill's desire for an ocean themed blue room. He thought little Earth girls were only supposed to like pink? Jenny told him crossly that Earth girls were allowed to prefer any colour they chose! So Jill got her blue room.

Notes under spoiler:
N.B. My camera zooms in too close to get a view of the whole lot top down, so I have uploaded 2 shots, front and back.

N.B. The cooker hood is a smoke alarm.

N.B. I messed up the swimmable lake slightly. Its perfectly usable, but the sims swim with their faces under water and only the tops of their heads sticking out, so no pictures. I guess I placed the floor a click or so lower than it should have been.

Edited to change Front shot: I forgot to put the roof up!

24th May 2018

Dear Miss Curious
It is a pleasure to inform you that the town council of our great Strangetown has decided to assign the house on 2 Cover Up Road to you and any other members of your household. The house is in need of some repairs, as such, the council has decided a budget of 80.000 simoleons is enough to bring it up to code. You are free to redecorate and change the layout of the inside, nevertheless the outside shell must remain. Further stories can be added at your discretion and the platforms can be removed. Do note that you are free to repaint the exterior.
We hope you the best for the rest of your life here in Strangetown.

Best regards,
Town Council of Strangetown

The Singles are a household of roommates. They have their fair share of problems, but can they overcome their differences and live a peaceful life in Strangetown? After three different decoration attempts of their new house, it seems like they still have major disagreements. They finally agreed on the current design, after several complaints from their neighbours about the noise their arguments made.
When the Singles arrived at 2 Cover Up Road, they thought it was a very... curious house, though it had some potential. They removed most of the platforms straight away and added two more stories on the front of the house to gain some extra living space. They decided to redecorate in an Art Deco approach. The outside kept its black and white scheme, as well as being covered partially in desert-coloured bricks - they saw those bricks in Ajay's house and they loved it, they had to include some in their house as well!
They needed two bedrooms and two full bathrooms. Chloe and Lola decided to share a room, while Kristen and Erin shared the other. The two bathrooms are located on either end of the ground floor. As for fixtures, the house is fully equiped with anything they might need: Kristen has an exercise bike to keep fit for as long as she stays in Strangetown; Lola has her own study in the third floor - with amazing views from the round windows! -; Chloe has a sophisticated phone and plenty of mirrors, as well as a double bed, for any of her very productive activities; and Erin has a tribal mask above her - purple, as expected - bed that, she claims, helps her develop her psychic powers.
For the outside, the Single ladies decided to add a bit of grass to all the sand, making a pretty pathway that leads to the entrance.

Here are the photos the town council took during their inspection of the lot:

Again, I believe I didn't break any rules. Please do inform me if I have and I will make the necessary corrections. I gave the house two bedrooms and two full bathrooms, as required, and I also tried to incorporate elements of every girl's personality.

I really love Art Deco. I had lots of fun making over this lot, although it was a very tricky one to decorate. I couldn't go for the opulent, luxurious style Art Deco is commonly associated with, instead I had to opt for a lower class Art Deco. But even if you're not on an unlimited budget, you can still go Art Deco - I guess Machine Age and its mass production do have their benefits! Anyway, hope you like my makeover of the Curious house. So far I've seen great builds!

To celebrate, I'll head over to the fermented fruit juice bar. Justpetro, prepare the drinks! :)

I finished my round 2 entry at the weekend, and let it sit for a few days before taking pictures, but here it is. For this round I chose the Grunts:

The Grunt family A military family of four males.

I like the idea that General Grunt has somehow managed to set an analog clock to military time.

Good work, all of you. I enjoy this round's entries very much!

The Beaker Family
This science and medical family consists of Loki, his wife Circe and the adult ‘boarder’, Nervous Subject.
Requirements: Nervous will require [his own room and Loki a lab of some kind.
As soon as he perfects his latest invention, Loki is sure to get the recognition he knows he deserves. In the meantime, he keeps himself busy by trying to assemble a nuclear reactor out of common household items. Loki is employed as an inventor.
Circe knows 238 different ways to make someone scream, and none of them are nice. She enjoys taxidermy and collecting coat hangers.
Nervous' hobbies include twitching and blinking a lot. Not much is known about Nervous, but his only personality points are 10 active and zero everything else!

I went through so many versions of the layout of this place but I think I'm finally happy with it! The Beakers aren't a family I've played much, so getting to know them was very interesting. I prefer a much more colourful decorating style than what I feel suits them, so that was tricky! I did find their original house way too dark with all the stone, so I tried to at least lighten it with white while keeping low key and monochrome.

I felt like the other house on the hill in Strangetown would be a good fit for them, especially since it's on Cover Up Road. I wanted to pay a small homage to the original lot with the tower and white exterior, while still modifying and improving it for the new family. I also kept some of the crazy paving outside since that's such a feature of the original house for me!

ETA: I use a Perfect Plants mod, so any inaccessible plants won't become overgrown/die.

Further under budget than I expected

On to the detailed tour...

The front entry way opens into a living space with couches, a reading nook, and a chess space. A pair of Circe's taxidermied antlers are hung in the reading nook. The Rubix cube on the table gives Logic skill. There's a full bathroom off to the left (which I really like the style of but can't fit or take good picture of ). Behind the stairs is the entryway to the public laboratory.

The public laboratory is shared by both Circe and Loki. Loki has a robotics desk to work on his nuclear reactor, as well as a medical training dummy and a disease/treatment medical development desk. The central desk area has a microscope, Bunsen burner, various flasks, and a sink for other work and keeping clean,

Through the (locked) black door is the secret laboratory...
The secret lab is where some of their... less savoury experiments take place. This is where their "lodger" is usually found being studied. Circe has also been studying some rare plants under lights to see what role they might play in her research - both medically, and with Nervous.

Nervous's living space connects directly to the lab. He has access to all of the same objects as in his previous home. The door from the lab leads straight into a small bathroom (in case of incidents with the experiments), then leading into a small living and food area. He has an armchair, TV, mini-fridge, and microwave (with a fire alarm not pictured).
Upstairs, Nervous has a small exercise mat and radio to make use of his active points.
The top floor is Nervous' bedroom, with a small single bed and mirror.
(@Jo, please let me know if you'd rather I split these into separate images. I just combined them into one for the post to make it look nicer! The pictures are separate in the attachments.)

Outside downstairs is a small walled garden, for other plants Circe is studying. A door from Nervous' living space leads out to the garden, allowing him some fresh air and to help tend some of the less rare plants. The gate is kept locked to him, however.

Upstairs, there's an open plan kitchen/living/dining space. It has all the mod cons, with plenty of space for Loki and Circe and any guests they feel like inviting over. The living space upstairs features a TV, though most of Loki and Circe's living is done downstairs among the books, chess, and labs.

Circe and Loki's bedroom is simple and understated. There's a small reading nook here too for any late night research. They also have a small ensuite.

That was a long post, paring down 21 images to 12 is no joke! Now I can finally look at all of the other entries for this round :)

@randomlyyellstuff , I simply LOVE how you managed to keep so much of the original silly floorcovering at outside :D <3 <3 <3

I really like your creative landscaping!

22nd Jun 2018, 8:47 AM
Well, how good does that cow plant look in the garden :) Love it.

22nd Jun 2018, 8:50 AM
Thanks you guys! Even though they didn't originally have a cowplant I felt it really suited their research :)

@joandsarah77 just to let you know, some of the links in the table for this round are to the moderator only forum. I just removed the db at the start and it worked for me but thought you might want to know

*head smack* Thanks for letting me know @randomlyyellstuff I'll go fix it up.

Two days left until the end of round two!

Or if you have put your entry in and I missed it, can you please point me towards it.

22nd Jun 2018, 8:16 PM
@joandsarah77 - I'll be going right down to the wire this time, and posting my entry on Sunday evening. Have had lots of traumatic decorating issues in RL, and haven't had time to decorate for my Sims. I should hopefully get a chance to load up my game tomorrow, at which point I hope all those notes I've been jotting down translate into something useful.

22nd Jun 2018, 11:38 PM
Yep getting there, just have hard time to change colors of ALL the roses, even as it is fast as allready placed those. But naturally at wrong color.. and it may be time consuming if you have enough of those.. you will see what I ment when finally getting pics up :)

23rd Jun 2018, 12:04 AM
Thanks for checking in guys. :)
If anyone is going to be late, say so and I will add your name to the board after the round closes. Missing a closing time doesn't mean you have been tossed out the contest :D It will incur a late penalty is all, 1/2 a point for every day over.

Waiting for that Fanta drinker to post her entry, she has to take over the fermented fruit juice bar while I am judging (and she will not drink all my stock :)

Lovely entries, all - please make sure that you have posted all the required pics.

23rd Jun 2018, 11:37 PM
@Emerald1234 Can you please make your top down view bigger? You need to zoom right in so I can see it properly.

24th Jun 2018, 12:08 AM
Actually, @Emerald1234 you are missing your floor plan. It needs 1 shot of overall and 1 shot of the floor plan, the floor plan being the building not the surrounding garden. You need to zoom in until the walls of the house are nearly or just touching the edges of the picture. ~ Thanks. :)

24th Jun 2018, 2:31 AM
That was excellent quick work, Emerald! Only five and a quarter hours from saying you'd start work on it to posting! I wish I could work so fast. It might be worth adding a close-up floor-plan of the house itself; I think that's a requirement.

I fear I'm liable to miss the due date with my play-along. I've only just got the Curious Brothers moved out. I don't do repeat play-throughs of the same 'hood, so I'm playing this in my existing Strangetown. Up to starting this contest play-along, I'd only played one loose rotation in Strangetown, so I'm quite confident there have been no big structural changes to any of the houses till now, but the houses have been lived in, so their value has depreciated. The Curious Brothers lived in theirs for 4 or 5 days till they were moved out today. As a result the value of their house after they moved out was only §46,406 rather than the §54,120 mentioned Jo's first post. The difference is §7,714. If I deduct this from the §80,000 mentioned, that leaves §72,286 as the maximum price before new Sims move in. But maybe I'm being a bit unfair on myself, as I'll a depreciated value for anything that I demolish, but have to pay the full price for replacements. So maybe I should allow myself up to about §73.000. I'm not planning on demolishing many walls in this house, and anyway, if Emerald can do it for well under §60K, I should be able to do it for under §72K.

Thanks Jo for your comments a few days ago about my round 1 entry. My idea of the red and white paint was to advertise that he was running a barber's shop. I originally tried searching on-line for a CC traditional barber's pole (red and white spiral stripes). I didn't find one, and thought of starting a WCIF, but then thought, "Why not just paint the building red and white instead? "He's in a bit of a dilemma over his wish to be alone, but at the same time needing to attract customers if his business is to earn money for him.

24th Jun 2018, 3:05 AM
I'm having some internet issues right now; it keeps messing up whenever I try to upload all my pics. I'm going to try doing just a couple at a time and see if that works. Finally got everything uploaded...yeesh...Is the bar open yet?

I went with a Retro-Tikki theme; I blame P.T and those Hawaiian shirts.

Living room

Office:A place where P.T. can organize all those coupons he clips. Out of the main flow of traffic, but not too isolated, so he can still keep tabs on what's going on with everyone else.

Reading nook: The tikki god keeps a watchful eye on all who enter his domain!

Kitchen: A huge kitchen; big enough for the entire family to get involved.

Dining room

Master bedroom: Decorated in soothing shades of green, this is Jenny's oasis after a stressful day at work.

Master bath

Johnny's room: The only room not adhering to the Tikki theme, Johnny's room is full-on Midcentury modern. And orange. Because rebellious teenager.

Johnny's bath: More muted in tone than the bedroom, but still not tikki-fied.

Jill's room: Not only does Jill see dolphins when she closes her eyes, she sees them when her eyes are open as well--in her spiffy dolphin wallpaper! The color scheme is reminiscent of the beach: sand colored carpet and blue walls. And there's a fish tank!

Jill's bath: More beachy goodness.

Patio and balcony: The whole family can enjoy the outdoors on the patio, but the balcony is just for the adults.

The Beaker's was misplaced and landed at 2 Cover Up Road, but you know they can't live in any old thing. Circe decided to do a modern style home. She did a light brick with double porches and a side balcony. She made sure that Loki's lab was on the top floor so that if there was a fire now there would be plenty of time to escape. Loki insisted that Nervous Subject room be close to the lab. He was given all the amenities of his the old room. Including a ant farm to become one with science. Because, Loki has set the house on fire more than once due his experimenting on far to many things so Circe decided on curtain only in her office has them.

Closer Front view

The first floor has a cosy fireplace and fountain to complete a relaxing setting. There is a eat in kitchen as well a formal dining room with a full bathroom and laundry room.

The second floor has a master suite with on board bathroom, a exercise room and office.

Loki's lab is on the third floor with all the same gadgets of his old lab. Nervous room also was complete with the things he enjoy.

I came as close as possible to the required dollar amount.
