I just love it when I stumble across something by accident ... well, in this case, it was with a little nudge from Numenor.

Here's the scoop:

I was trying to clone the Gentrific Way of Wood fireplace and no matter what I tried, my clone kept replacing the original. So, I literally spent over an hour searching the forums here and the forums at the SimPE site trying to find the answer to my problem. I was sure someone had come across this before, but I couldn't find any thread that talked about it. So, finally, in desperation, I sent a PM to Numenor, since he's usually the one who knows how to fix this stuff. And I was right. He replied.

What he told me was that in order to clone the fireplace, you need to add some stuff to a text file and tell your downloaders that they need to do the same. But, then he mentioned that there was another way: I could simply change the category for my new fireplace to something in the Buy mode instead of the Build mode and then mine wouldn't overwrite the original. BUT, he mentioned some drawbacks with this: he said my buy mode fireplace would not have a chimney and it could not be moved (if you try to move it, it will not let you place it anywhere but the original location, so you have to delete it and buy it again). Well, I thought this sounded better to me than telling people they had to alter some text file, so I changed the category on my new modern fireplace from Build to Buy>Appliances>Miscellaneous. Now, here's where the funny stuff comes in....

I put my new fireplace in the game (and yes, the original Gentrific one is ok and well and living in Build Mode). Mine is now in Appliances>Miscellaneous. Anyway, what Numenor told me was true. It had no chimney and once I placed it, I couldn't move it....BUT I accidentally discovered something. After I placed it, I went into Build mode and clicked on one of the fireplaces there, then I went back into Buy mode and voila! I clicked on my chimney-less fireplace and it gave it a chimney AND I could move it anywhere I wanted. Then I started playing around to see what happened and I discovered this:

1. Buy the fireplace in the Appliance section>Miscellaneous.
2. Go to Build mode and click on any fireplace in there that has the chimney type you want
3. Return to Buy mode and click on the fireplace and that chimney will be added and now you can move it wherever you want it.

OR ... if you simply go into Build mode and click on any fireplace in there before you buy this fireplace, then you can go buy it, place it in the house, then pick it up and it will have a chimney and you can move it wherever you want.

At least, this is the way it works in my game. I'd really like people who don't have any expansion packs to try it for me and see if it works differently without the EPs.

Some other things I discovered ... you can still use it without any chimney if that's what you want. Just be careful when you place it because you won't be able to move it. (and be sure you haven't gone into Build mode and clicked on any fireplace before you buy this one). And, if you ever go into Build mode and click on any fireplace in there, the next time you click on this one in Buy mode, it will have a chimney.

Also, after you've assigned a chimney. If you ever go into Build mode and click on any fireplace, when you go into Buy mode and click on this fireplace in the game, a new chimney may be assigned, depending on which one you clicked on in Build mode. But, you can always just go back to Build mode again and click on the chimney you want and then reassign it to this fireplace.

Oh...and here's another cool thing...once the chimney is assigned, it's even recolorable :-)

Anyway....here it is. Enjoy both the fireplace and the information, if you want to try doing it yourself.

UPDATE: I added two more pictures to show that it's easily recolored and all the fireplace features seem to be working with it. As you can see, you can place stuff on the mantel and on the wall above. And I also show where I used the design tool to recolor the chimney to white. So far, there's no bugs here. BUT, I have both EPs and the latest patches, so I really want to hear from anyone who doesn't have this stuff. Thanks!
