Heres a perfect way of creating an aviary for your birds. It's a cage with invisible bars. If you use boolprop snapobjectstogrid false cheat and moveobjects on cheat, you can place the cage so that it will appear to be connected to a wall as a pole for your birds. Or leave it free standing or maybe join them together to make a long pole of two or three poles. There are two optional downloads for this (for those that dont want a new object in game)

1: flight_of_freedom_bird_cage_un_moded_v1
which is a clone that will appear as a new object in your game, a better quality recolour. With unique guids so no conflicts with other objects etc.

2: flight_of_freedom_recolor
Just a normal recolour that will just appear as normal. a slightly lower quality as there is a little shadow from the cage left over due to the limitations in recoloring this object. hence the new object option.

Both will still have the usual interactions so be warned if your sims dont keep the cage clean it will revert to a very disgusting dirty cage.

In both options the food will also be invisible but as you can see from the screen shot the bird will still spray the food every where.
