SCREENSHOTS
Although it would be impossible for me to choose my favourite Discworld book or character, The Monastery of Oi Dong has to be my favourite place, and I am with Wen completely on what constitutes a perfect day!
So when the MTS monthly theme was announced as Fantasy I knew JUST what I wanted to create!
I present to you my version of the Monastery of Oi Dong, complete with cherry trees, procrastinators and mandalas;
Here you will find The Great Hall with the Procrastinators; Dojos with training dummies and board breakers; Qu's classrooms for technical experiments; The Mandala Hall; the Abbot's Quarters [and rooms for the other monks, and a room for Lu Tze]; The Garden of Five Elements, the Cherry Trees that are always in blossom, and, of course, ..... the Garden of Five Surprises!
All ready for you to CAS your own set of History Monks, including Wen the Eternally Surprised, Qu and, of course, everybody's favourite History Monk, Lu Tze [not just a sweeper]!
I had such fun making this [all from my own imagination since I couldn't find a Josh Kirby [or Paul Kidby] illustration of Oi Dong anywhere!] and hope you have fun playing with it in your game.
The rooves are all a bit quirky [without getting silly] since all the rooves in Discworld are, to say the least, unique!
For those of you from Roundworld who are unfamiliar with Oi Dong, for your edification I include the following [click buttons to read]:
The monastery of Oi Dong is situated in the airiest of valleys up in the Ramtops. It is the home of the History Monks.
Created by Wen the Eternally Surprised, it is a beautiful place, with cherry blossoms that are always in bloom and ice floating on the streams all the time.
The History Monks are officially called The fighting monks of the Order of Wen.
They are the official keepers of History: to ensure that history follows its correct course, and even to make sure that it exists at all. Times are always getting worse, the monks feel. They move time from places where it is not needed to places where it is needed [I know I could do with a bit more time on many days!]
They use sand mandalas to monitor time and procrastinators [like prayer wheels] to wind time in and out and to store it!
The Five Elements in Buddhist philosophy and their representations:
- Air . . . . usually represented by flags
- Water . . . ponds or fountains
- Fire . . . . . lamps, sometimes in statues
- Earth . . . . rocks, as in zen gardens
- Kū [void] . . energy, through active meditation [martial arts, chess etc]
This is Lu Tze's own garden
The five surprises are:
- the little tilting bridge, which throws you into the carp pool
- the way the little daisies spray you with venomous pollen
- the bronze butterfly that flaps its wings when you breathe on it [looking very feminine here!]
- the yodelling stick insect [sorry, you may not find this in my version of the garden]
- Lu-Tze himself [if you CAS him!]
Alternatively, instead of Lu-Tze, the fifth surprise may be a cheap carnival mask, which Lu-Tze dons when asked by Ludd. [See if you can find it in the garden. It is there!] Note that Lu-Tze never said that the fifth surprise was particularly good.
