Hello all! I decided to do a quick project as a little love letter to one of my favorite artists of all time!

As an Art History minor in college, I really enjoy learning all about pieces of famous art and all the little details and history behind them. One of my favorite artists to learn about so far has been Artemisia Gentileschi: one of the very few famous female painters of the Baroque period. Her work combines religious and feminist aspects into striking images, and I find them incredible.

In this pack, I've included five paintings: Self-Portrait as the Allegory of Painting, Susanna and the Elders, Judith Slaying Holofernes, Jael and Sisera, and Venus and Cupid. Each description comes with the painting's backstory and a few nuggets of info about them!

Each painting is its own object (i.e., as can be seen from the images included here, they are not just recolors of one painting). I did this so none of them would be distorted trying to fit them into a frame with the wrong aspect.

Enjoy!

Note: Two of the paintings are edited to censor nudity. I'm an artist.

#1 Susanna and the Elders

Description: This painting, painted in 1610 by Artemisia Gentileschi, depicts the story of Susanna from the Catholic Bible's book of Daniel. Two elderly men spy on Susanna bathing and demand sexual favors from her. When she refuses, the men accuse her of adultery, but become tangled up in their own stories, eventually clearing Susanna's name. Gentileschi's portrayal of the story in unique for its time, as it truly depicts Susanna as horrified and embarassed, unlike many male protrayals of the story that depict Susanna as indulgent in the creepy men's attention. It also is unique for the time for depicting a female body with realistic accuracy, due to being painted by a woman, a trait that was not common in the Baroque period.

#1 Venus and Cupid

Description: This 1625 painting by Artemisia Gentileschi depicts a sleeping Venus (goddess of love and beauty) being fanned by her son Cupid with a bundle of peacock feathers. The work combines Classical elements with the shadowy Baroque style, and Venus's face contains features that match those of Gentileschi herself. Likely commissioned by a very wealthy patron, the bedsheets' color is acheived through the use of lapis lazuli: a very bold an expensive material used to create deep, beautiful blues.

#1 Jael and Sisera

Description: This painting, painted by Artemisia Gentileschi in 1620, depicts the murder of Sisera by Jael, a story told in the biblical book of Judges. This is a story seldom painted during this time, possibly becuase of questions around Jael's morality in the story. Historians believe Gentileschi was inspired by Ludovico Cigoli's depiction of the story, but she also distinctly separates the two figures, unlike Cigoli's protrayal that mashes them together into a narrower form. This painting was restored by Veronika Ember in 1978 due to paint loss, making some elements of the painting not quite fit with Gentileschi's technique.

#1 Judith Slaying Holofernes

Description: Painted circa 1620 by Artemisia Gentileschi, this painting depicts the story of Judith from the Catholic Bible's book of Judith. This second version of the painting by Gentileschi depicts details that ay identify herself with Judith, such as a depiction of Artemis on Judith's bracelet. It is suspected that Gentileschi painted this painting as a response to an assault Agostino Tassi carried out on her when she was seventeen, which resulted in a long trial during which Gentileschi was tortured in order to get information about the assault out of her. This assault and the subsequent trial did result in Tassi being imprisoned, but not without Gentileschi being traumatized from the ordeal, inspiring her feminist works.

#1 Self-Portrait as the Allegory of Painting

Description: Self-Portrait as the Allegory of Painting, also called La Pittura, was painted circa 1638 by Artemisia Gentileschi. The baroque painting personifies the act of painting in her own image, and displays her from a unique and challenging angle, brilliantly executed.
