A Warning about Video Game Programming

Date Posted: 30th Oct 2011 at 11:18 PM

Since I just received yet another request to write a video game for someone, or at least to teach them how to write a video game, this quote struck me as particularly appropriate.

From the University of Prince Edward Island Computer Science Department:
Quote:
Video Game Programming
It’s Not About Playing Video Games

Well, playing video games is part of it – but only a small part. We want to make clear to you what you will be getting into if you pursue the video game programming specialization. Computer science is reasonably tough – you need to be good at problem solving and decent in math. You also have to be willing to work hard, sometimes for long hours at a time. Industry has told us that they are not interested in mediocre graduates – it’s a very competitive field that would rather not hire at all than hire people not up to their standards. The design of the video game programming specialization reflects these standards – the bar is set high.
I started programming in Grade 10 and spent many evenings at my local university in my spare time trying to understand programming, since my teacher just couldn't answer my questions. When I graduated from high school / secondary school, I went to the best technical university in the country for a degree in math and computer science. (Don't worry, I also dated a lot )

After graduation, I went to work for several companies, including some that have internationally recognized names. I worked in several different areas, including real-time programming, but finally settled into making tools that programmers use to write programs.

I'm happy to write small programs for free, if they make the Sims 2 more enjoyable. But, writing a video game is a lot of work. Asking someone to write a video game for you is a major request. I expect to be well-paid for that kind of work.

As for teaching someone to program... I have actually taught classes in computer science. However, I expect to be well-paid for that kind of work, too. You can learn something about programming in a few months. But, to learn how to write video games, expect to spend many years learning, full-time.

Odd insult

Quote:
btw how much is ea paying you again?
This isn't the first time that someone has tried to insult another person in this way at MTS. It seems like such an odd insult. If I were working for EA, would that be a bad thing?

This kind of insult often comes up in discussions about piracy. The logic seems to be: "If you believe in intellectual property, then you are a stooge of the evil corporation. People have a right to everyone else's intellectual property without cost, especially property which belongs to the evil empire."

However, I do believe in intellectual property. In fact, I make my living off of intellectual property. I work hard at what I do and I make a reasonable living off of that effort.

I also donate intellectual property to the Sims community. It's my choice to make my programs open-source and to share them and my other creations with the community without cost.

I honestly believe that people have a right to ask to be paid for writing programs (including games), for writing books, for making movies, for making music, for creating graphics like paintings and photographs, etc. These creative endeavors add something to our lives. They have value.

When people work for a company, they are paid for the work that they do but they (usually) give up their rights to the finished product. In effect, they sell their rights to their intellectual property to the company. This makes a lot of sense to me, since most collaborations could not be attributed to just one person. There are other ways to split the proceeds, but being paid a salary by a company who ends up owning the finished product seems a reasonable alternative.

That isn't to say that I agree 100% with EA's piracy policy, or MTS' piracy policy, or even Canada's new copyright laws. There are grounds for reasonable people to disagree on the limits to DRM, on the right to make backups, on whether downloads should be keyed to the person or to the computer. One does not have to agree completely with EA or MTS to agree that piracy is wrong.

No, I do not work for EA. However, I don't believe that it would be a bad thing to work for a company that made some of the games that I love.

No, MTS doesn't pay me. However, I try to understand and follow their rules when I'm posting on their site. I'm a guest here; it seems only common sense to follow their rules.

Things to investigate

Date Posted: 6th Oct 2011 at 5:37 PM

My list is getting too long again, so this is just a note on some things that I want to look into:

1) Incorrectly breaking the home / business connection, as described in post # 243 here:
http://www.modthesims.info/showthre...113#post3660113

Can the HoodChecker find and fix these broken connections?

2) ... ? Oops. I've already managed to forget what #2 was. I just remember that it was important. Sigh.

3) Look into the SimIDs used by multi PT and multi PS mods. [Done]

4) Placement of ship lots into beach neighborhoods: [Done]
http://www.modthesims.info/showthread.php?t=456966

5) SleepyCat has some new populated neighborhoods available, so I should update the wiki. Looks like Tarlia's links may have changed, as well. [Done]

6) Create a tutorial for safely depopulating a neighborhood. Include notes on merging an unpopulated neighborhood as a subhood for populated neighborhood:

Post #2192: http://www.modthesims.info/showthre...613#post2132613
http://www.modthesims.info/showthread.php?t=457562

7) Create a tutorial (tiptorial?) on techniques for installing an existing lot into an existing neighborhood so that the lot terrain fits into the hood terrain, without destroying the hood terrain:

I see that there's a new achievement: Contributed to the Wiki. I wonder whether this will encourage people to update the wiki more regularly?

Remove Google Instant

Date Posted: 25th Aug 2011 at 5:17 PM

[Update:] Thanks to Quatchi for this link:
http://www.google.com/webhp?complete=0

No more Google Instant! Horray!
[End Update]

I'm a fast typist and Google Instant is slowing me down significantly, to say nothing of the uselessness of the stuff that it finds before I'm done typing.

To stop Google Instant from auto-searching as I type:
http://www.google.com/support/webse...wer=186610&rd=1

Just set "Do not use Google Instant" in preferences:
http://www.google.com/preferences
http://www.google.ca/preferences

Of course, this means that I have to enable cookies from google, just to get reasonable behavior. Blah! Should definitely be opt-in rather than opt-out.

What next?

Date Posted: 19th Aug 2011 at 2:39 PM

Just thinking about my current to-do list and setting priorities:

- HoodChecker: Finish memory logic and release (with source code).
- LevelAdder: Fix hood selection. Release (with source code), but note existing problems?
- HoodReplace: Replace all lots. How handle occupied lots and hood / lot memories?
- GridAdjuster: Adjust water levels (flat only for now). Min / Max. Relative? Copy partial terrain from another lot.
- Clean Installer: Better handling of non-standard save game location.
- No Weather Wants mod: No more wants for things that can't happen when using No Weather On Any Lot: rain, snow, hail, ...

Major new projects:
- SimPE: Various fixes and changes. See http://www.modthesims.info/showthread.php?t=446704.
- AnyGameStarter: Handle collections. Since we don't have the source code, I'd have to rewrite this from scratch. Since I don't have any collections, I'd need people to give me some information about their game:
http://www.modthesims.info/showthread.php?t=450094
- Hack Conflict Detection Utility (HCDU): Unable to approach creator about sharing the source code because his site refuses to recognize image verification. The main thing that I'd like to add is the ability to check Downloads in non-standard save game locations. A workaround exists:
http://www.modthesims.info/showthread.php?t=453018
- No Duplicate Name mod. When generating townies, do not reuse names, unless there are no unique names available.

Also, here is a useful link for Dizzy's thumbnail patch to fix sim portrait regeneration, next time that someone asks:

Rise Up Slow Down

Date Posted: 17th Aug 2011 at 9:20 PM

I uploaded my last completed pair of Rise Up lots today. I have eight more lots which are ground level only, but I haven't added the foundation or basement yet. So, I guess that it will take longer between uploads now.
