Picked Upload! This is a picked upload! It showcases some of the best talent and creativity available on MTS and in the community.
HomeworkSometimesFasterFun - available for TS2, UNI, NL, OFB, Pets, Seasons, Bon Voyage, FreeTime and Apartment Life. Please read the installation instructions and select the correct file for your game.

January 11, 2009: The Apartment Life version is available. Feel free to download and test it in your game.

This versions is still considered to be 'in testing.'
I have tried it and it seems to be working without any issues. There is a chance, though, that I may have missed testing certain scenarios, so if you notice anything odd, please let me know! (This goes for the previous versions, too!) Thanks!

-------------------------------------

My purpose for creating this mod was to make school and homework for the teen and child slightly more realistic in the game. Please remember that this mod does NOT affect Young Adults in college.

-------------------------------------
MOD FEATURES

Homework Sometimes
1: My favorite feature...homework will only be given occasionally. When the student gets off the bus and checks their report card, you will then see a message appear in the top right corner of the screen ONLY if the child has NO homework for that day.

Faster
1: Students with an A-, A, or A+ will finish their homework faster.
2: The homework speed increase is dependent upon the student's grade. An A- will get a 1 point boost, an A will get 2 points and an A+ will get 3 points.
(Note: Maxis also already has a number of speed boosts pre-built into the game - I will describe them below in the 'MAXIS SPEED BOOSTS' section)

Fun
1: Serious Students (those with their Playfulness Attribute of 4 bars or less) will get a raise in their Fun Motive while at school AND while doing homework. Nerds!
2: Any student who is being helped with homework will find that homework is not such a fun-sucker and their social bar will also get a tiny boost. (Fun won't necessarily go up, but you will notice that the bar won't shoot down as rapidly as it usually does).

-------------------------------------
MAXIS SPEED BOOSTS
For those who do not realize, the game already has some homework speed boosts built in. I have not touched or tweaked their numbers. For those of you who are interested in the tiny details, I have provided you with the information below. I believe I have covered everything accurately.
All Games
1 - There is a 3 point speed boost only when a student is being helped with their homework.
2 - There is a permanent 3 point speed boost after a student has learned how to study. (Check their memories to see if they have learned to study)
Seasons Only
3 - There is a 1 point speed boost when a student does their homework in the autumn (fall) season. Note: You will see fall leaves swirling around their head as they do their homework during this season.
4 - There is an extra speed boost if your Sim drinks the homemade apple juice before doing homework. (I haven't tried this in-game yet, so I'm not sure exactly what happens or how it works - I just know that it happens)

-------------------------------------
EXTRA NOTES
1 - The fun increase for serious students does not begin until the little blue progress bar begins to rise. The initial few minutes of homework are not fun, but as the homework progresses, so does the fun.
2 - The student's grade will continue to rise even though they don't get homework. Grades are more affected by undone homework and missing school. Mood might affect this, too. Any undone homework *will* affect their grade. Make sure they finish all the homework they receive.
3 - For those of you who are curious, a Sim will usually complete their homework in about 2 Sim hours when they do not have any speed boosts at all.
4 - When all the boosts are available (Learned to study, Autumn, A+, etc.) the Sim should be able to complete their homework in about 30 minutes or less.

-------------------------------------

-------------------------------------

March 1st, 2007: I noticed a month ago that TwoJeffs decided to add their own features to my mod and redistribute it there. I just want you to be sure that when you come to me with questions about the "homeworksometimes" hack, that you are asking about the one I uploaded here and not the one they decided to alter and redistribute. Do NOT use their version of my 'homeworksometimes' mod when you use the one you downloaded from here. The mod here is the most recent version and the only version of this mod that I support. Thanks!

Thank you so much to everyone who has given their feedback!
Let me know if I missed any compatibility issues. Have fun!

I can't wait to get this in the game! It sounds so much more realistic than the current set-up! Thanks, Jen. ~KG <-- for Jenflower

This looks great, Jenflower! You have put a lot of thought into this. There are also lots of other mods/hacks out there than can max out fun so I'm glad you didn't put everything under the sun in this hack. I think this homework hack seems pretty realistic to me. I just hate that doing homework drains the life out of the child/teen. With your hack, they won't go to bed stinky, hungry, on the verge of peeing in their bed, and grouchy.

Regarding the homework speed for A+ students, realistically, A+ students will tend to do their homework faster. I would think C or B students struggle a bit more, therefore doing their homework slightly slower. Great job! I'll be putting this in my game for sure.

Well, I guess I can take this one off my list now. +8 is probably a little extreme of a boost in one shot. Maybe a +2 for every grade above B+, so A+ receives a +6, tops.

Thanks Jen, this is just what I've been waiting for I didn't want to use the no homework hac, because I do like the fact the kids get homework, but it was such a drag to make them do it all the time, especially for teens with after-school jobs.

I don't think that Sim-homework is really cerebral in nature. Notice how Sims don't complete the homeworks of younger siblings any faster, even though that stuff should be trivial. Maybe this can be included also?

I did have it at +6 for a while, but I like seeing homework done in a 1/2 hour, which the 8 gives.
But, thinking about it now, I think my problem is that I never really tested it with a child who has been taught how to study (+3 boost) and is being helped (+3 boost), which would give the student a final boost of 14 ... ack!
So if I do test it and see that it is ridiculously fast, I will definitely lower it.

Also, I think you're right - I do like the idea of incrementing the boost from A- to A+. I don't want the kids to get lazy and think they don't need to work any harder once they reach A-.
I'll take all the comments and maybe make a necessary change this weekend.
If you only knew how many times I changed the formula over the past week or so...
but it is pretty easy to change, so I can tweak it quickly, if required.

Their school grade.
The chance of having homework is a random chance and does not depend upon the grade. The only thing their school grade affects is the speed of finishing their homework.

Does this hack retain compatibility with "no cheering"?

Yeah it's mentioned in the first thread that it does. It just conflicts with the "no homework" hack.

J.M., DON'T take the 'nohomework' out!!!

It works so great, that I don't want to use another hack, no matter what it suggests....

It's quite a while that I can relax and no worry about home works, but take care of the training the teens skills, and find them jobs, to become "overachievers".

If somebody wants to waste time over home works - he will choose to download this hack. But many of us are fully contentented with the "nohomework" hack!...
Hmm, What does this do?..
#15 Old 16th Dec 2004 at 2:01 AM
Thanks for this Jen! All the changes you made are realistic IMO.

Thanks a lot...I hope this makes the game a little more realistic. I don't remember having homework every single night in school. Plus, homework can be fun if it's a subject you enjoy!

GREEEEAAAAT!!! good good!! something like this has been discussed a lot of times in lots of threads! great!
i also agree with the increment from A- to A+

great Jen! thx a lot!!!

alright! this mod rocks! i think this is a great step in the right direction about the homework fiasco. i personally dispise the fact that it annihilates my child-sims life every time she sits down. its homework not the bubonic plague!. anyway thank you for this. i realise it would probably be too fast but id like to see around a +10. thats just my 2 cents

It's too bad there aren't different kinds of homework. Calculus homework could drain fun really fast for playful students, while art homework could skyrocket their fun. Or, better yet, you could choose which subjects your Simkid likes and hates. Ah well, this is a good compromise. Thanks, Jenflower.

I wasn't threatening to take an existing hack off the list, I was talking about crossing THIS one off my to-do list, since someone else has done it. Can't hog the *ENTIRE* game hacks forum, after all. :P
