This is a new mesh, and means that it's a brand new self contained object that usually does not require a specific Expansion pack (although this is possible depending on the type). It may have Recolours hosted on MTS - check below the description for more information.
Picked Upload! This is a picked upload! It showcases some of the best talent and creativity available on MTS and in the community.
Updated Dec. 29, 2007 - Reduced face count and added straw recolor.

Today I created a different version of my hay wagon and some bales of hay. If you have my former version it won't conflict but I did a better job on this one. I used a table, for my clone item, released with University EP for the wagon. Bales of hay should work with no EPs.

I tried to give the bales of hay the look of being twined to give more realism and to do so it takes more polys, not a lot. The stack of 4 bales is a little high just to warn those that might have slower systems.

Wagon is found under surfaces misc for $300
Single Bale of Hay is under Sculptures for $3
4 Bales is under Decorative Misc $50

Hope some of you can use these.

Enjoy!

Polygon Counts:
Bales of Hay Stacked - f440

Hay Wagon - f7046

Bale of Hay f110

Thanks to all that help make this possible.

Neat wagon!

QUESTIONS: If all my questions are anwered in the meshing tutorials, feel free to just tell me to look there. ;p I'm used to OpenGL and Kitware's VTK, not Milkshape and such, and that's why I have these questions. How'd the meshing software come up with 1200 polys for the hay bales? I see indentations where the twine is, and the corners are rounded, but mostly the bales are flat. I'm envisioning a bale using 22 polys (20 quads, 2 concave n-gons for the endcaps), or if you break that all down into triangles, that's still under 100 triangles. Can you run it through a polygon decimator? Feature angle of 170deg should preserve the twine indentations. Or is there subtle bumpiness or curvature that's not showing in the pictures and that's what it needs all the polys for? If so, I would suggest increasing it to show up better. Is the meshing software insisting on isotropic poly size, so small indentations for twine mean lots of polys in flat areas? If so, can isotropy be turned off?

In any case, yay, hay!

Jez I'm so sorry I just don't know the answer to this. I can tell you how I created it. I created a box cubed 10x10x10. Actually I was suprised that it came up with so many faces myself. I tried to reduce it but just couldn't get the effect I wanted. I rounded the edges and pulled in the each side. Didn't actually add the twine, I did that in the texture. I hope this helps.

Thanks, and don't worry about it. I'm asking algorithm questions when I should be asking software _usage_ questions. Bad CatOfEvilGenius! If I ever learn Milkshape, and figure out if it has the decimation ability or not, I'll let folks know.

In case anyone wondered, polygon decimation is where you replace lots of little polys in nearly flat areas with a smaller number of bigger polys. This makes your object look more "faceted", but if you don't do it too much, it isn't that noticeable. The "feature angle" is how you preserve sharp edges and details, like the edge of the lips on a face, so they don't get "smoothed out" by decimation. The decimator will leave polys alone if the angle between two adjacent ones is less than or equal to the feature angle. You can see examples of decimated cow and Buddha meshes in the paper below, on pages 7 and 6, respectively. (I didn't write the paper.) I thought maybe meshing tools would have the capability to do this, but I don't use them.

I know the twine is part of the texture, which is the efficient way to do it. I was referring to the indentations or grooves the twine "sits in", so the bale has that "squeezed by twine" look.

I hope I'm not being off-topic discussing this, maybe I should post in the forums?

Anyhoo, I download stuff with more polys than your hay bale and it works fine, so it isn't really a problem for me. Unless I put 50 bales on a lot, which I'm not planning on.

Wagon as Farmer's Market Display Stand???

If the wagon is a table... then I can put ANY object on it that I can put on a table... like Seasons harvested fruit, maybe?... and then sell the fruit off the wagon from my home based farmer's market business? I'll have to try that out... Can sellable stuff be on tables, or is it just display cases, floor and walls? I know folks made trucks that do this, but a wooden wagon is so much more quaint and rustic.

I did not change any of the table options so you should be able to use it just like any table. I didn't see any reason to take these options out so you have a great idea concerning the farmers market business. As far as sellable stuff being on tables, I never tried so sorry don't have an answer to that one. If you find that it won't work for this I could clone a display case for you. Or your welcome to use my mesh to do so yourself if you like.
