Widescreen CAS Camera fix (all games)

With a widescreen monitor the CAS screen can be problematic -- when choosing clothes half the Sim's body is blocked by the UI widgets, and similar problems with the closeup face editing view. I have made an edited CASCamera.txt file which fixes this problem for widescreen monitors, as well as allows much better zooming abilities in both modes (full body vs face closeup).

The view will be slightly off when first switching between modes, but you can simply zoom in or out to get a better view of whichever part you want. In full body mode, zooming out will show the full body including shoes, etc. Zooming in will then go to a relative closeup of the face, on the OTHER side of the UI widgets. You can see this in the screenshots below.

In face closeup mode the face will initially be partially obscured by the UI widgets, but you can zoom in to get the full view of the face on the left. Zooming out will low you to see most of the Sim's body, again on the OTHER side of the widgets (again, see screenshots).

There are two rar files. If you have the PETS expansion installed download the one named labelled for Pets.

If you don't have PETS installed, download the other one (CASCamera.rar). That one will work with any expansions (including none at all).

(note: the PETS file includes the camera data for pet creation, but as I don't use PETS, I have not fixed those views for widescreen monitors, they are included only for compatibility.)

Installation:
In your My Documents/EA Games/The Sims 2/ folder there is a subfolder named Cameras. In that folder, there is a file named CASCamera.txt. Bakcup that file, then replace it with the CASCamera.txt from the rar file you downloaded.

Additional Credits:
Thanks to Gunmod, whose camera config files I used to figure out what the different numbers meant.

I'll have to give this a try! My personal fix since I got my widescreen monitor has generally been to play in windowed mode in a 1280x1024 window when intending to make heavy use of CAS.

I thought all you had to was adjust your screen resolution. It works for me at least. I've never had problem with CAS and I've always had a widescreen monitor.

This has always annoyed me no end. I like the detail on the highest resolution, and the icons blocking the sim are so annoying. Thank-you

It depends on the resolution you are using. The highest resolutions like 1600 x 1200 have this problem because the resolution is increased but they don't change the size of the menu. I ended up lowering the resolution so I could actually see my sims but now I can view at my preferred resolution again. Thanks!

For lower resolutions the widescreen part might not be a problem as the UI stuff will be off to the side... but my mod adds zooming so get it anyway!

Thank you so much! I couldn't adjust my resolution because my game looks really weird and stretched to me on all but the highest res. It never even occurred to me that someone could fix it, so I was so excited to find this today. Thanks again!

This will be great, but how do I install it correctly?

My bad, I forgot install instructions :P

In your /My Documents/EA Games/The Sims 2/ folder you will find a folder named Cameras. Replace the CASCamera.txt in that folder with the new one in the download. You probably want to back up the original first though.

Sounds nice! But i don't need it, my cas screen works without this issue in widescreen mode .

If I was able to use img-tags here, you would see my personal 275px × 42px signature...

Is this for 16:9 or 16:10 displays?

Wow Thank you so much! I just got a widescreen computer and the camera annoyed me so much...I had no idea what to do about it, either.

It should work for either, I made it on a 16:10 but it mainly changes the zoom angles which won't be too different on a 16:9.

Hmmm...my new laptop is a widescreen. I'll give this a try! I noticed when you adjust the game resolution, the screen tends to 'stretch'

thanks for sharing

Thank you. My screen resolution is 1400x900 and I am so tired of the tops of heads being chopped off in body shop. I am going to install this now. Thank you

If your pictures are unaltered, your actual screen resolution of 1024x576 is 16:9 (not 16:10)

Your physical screen resolution might be 16:10 (let me guess, the famous 1440x900?) but your in-game resolution is 16:9, which gives a larger image (proportionally speaking). If I'm right, you probably have slight black bars at top and bottom of the game, or your Sims appear slimmer than they should (they are stretched vertically).

I do have a 1440x900 screen (16:10), but the game only offers me 1280x768 (16:9.6) for WS. When comparing my screenshots with yours, I have slightly more place on the left of the box (the one where you enter Sim settings) and much less on the right. The default Maxis camera settings, while causing the Sim to be off-centered, does not cause it to be partially hidden as on your screenshots. In fact, I find that only pets (which your config file does not affect) are a problem on my CAS screens.

Therefore your camera settings do not work well for me.
