I'm not sure you can have a perfectly fitting roof on an uneven wall, because there are no uneven roofs.
If you use the auto-roof function, the roof will be placed, but won't touch the lower parts of the uneven walls.

I'll try to explain better the installation intructions:
Quote:
How to install
IMPORTANT: this file will overwrite a game file! Follow instructions carefully!
a) Unpack the attached zip to your desktop.
b) Using Windows Explorer, open the following folder:
[gamedir]\The Sims 2\TSData\Res\Catalog\Scripts
Note 1: the [gamedir] is usually C:\Program Files\EA Games, unless you have a custom installation.
Note 2: if you have the University installed, the installation path is the same.
c) Create a backup copy of the walls.txt file and put it in a safe place: you can use the backup in order to remove the custom walls and revert to the original game.
d) Move the new Walls.txt from the desktop to the open folder, overwriting the original file.

Peerforming step a) will result in having a file called Walls.txt on your desktop; leave it there, for the moment, and perform step b): open in turn the folders pointed out above, until you should see, in the Explorer window, the Scripts folder, containing a bunch of TXT files, among which you should see a Walls.txt file. This is the ORIGINAL walls.txt file: copy it in a safe location (any folder *outside* the game one and outside the downloads one: e.g. create a folder called "C:\Backup" and copy the ORIGINAL walls.txt in there).
Now close the backup folder and go back to the desktop (step d): copy the walls.txt file from the desktop and paste it into the "Scripts" folder, overwriting the original.

That's all: now in the Scripts folder there is the modified walls.txt, and in the backup folder there is the original walls.txt.
If you need to restore the original walls.txt, open the backup folder (e.g. C:\Backup), copy the walls.txt file from there and paste it into the Scripts folder, overwriting the modified one.

I've finally started my Journal. Information only, no questions.

What icons correspond to the thumbnailResource variable?
Is there a way of finding out what the thumbnails are available, because I want to change the command highlighted in bold below? In other words, how did you know that "0xe9261348" is a particular wall thumbnail? Many thanks.

Those values refer to GroupID and Instance of the graphics contained into the ui.package, located in [gamedir]\The Sims 2\TSData\Res\UI.
I browsed all the images (there are many!) until I found a suitable graphic for each custom wall, and then I wrote down the Group and Instance.

Just edit again the walls.txt, and delete everything from
Code:
# *custom* un-leveled terrain walls
wall 90
...

to the end of the file.

But be warned: if in your lots there are custom walls, they will turn to black iron fences.

To be able to fix the walls made with the custom walls, modify the wall.txt for the default walls to enable it to build in many ways to fix the replaced iron fences.
The following setting has tested workable, and I can convert those old lots back to normal... with some works...

# normal walls
wall 1
defaultPattern "blank"
wallThickness standard
mayChangeSurface true
mayAttachObjects true
mayCutAway true
requiresFlatBottom false
requiresFlatTop false
submersible true

thumbnailResource 0 0x499db772 0xe9261348

Bah, nevermind. I forgot that my sims data is in two places: one through mydocuments and the other through program files. (It keeps my lil sis from accessing some of my more "questionable" custom content. As she has her own log-in and thus, her own seperate mydocuments folder, so she can't use custom content in her game.)

if this file overwrite the one from maxis It means that you now can use as many wall as you want if you are building a "castle"?
Because I try to make a huge building and I couldn't use any more walls from maxis game. By the way I have all expansions!!!

This file DOES overwrite the Maxis one, but contains the same data as the original, plus some additional data.
So, you should have no problems in using the original Maxis wall, after having installed this mod.
What about the Maxis foundations? Can you use them correctly? I ask because the foundations are defined into the Maxis original file, and replicated into the modded file, just like the normal wall.

This reminds me an email I recieved some times ago: a user claimed that perhaps there was a sort of limit in the number of wall sections within the sam lot; he was creating a huge building, and soon he "ran out" of walls: just like you, he could not build walls any more (he could only delete walls from a point and build the same amount of walls in another point).
That user didn't use this mod, though: therefore I think that - if really there is a limit in the allowed wall sections - it is not related to this mod.

So, the question is: is there a limit? And if so, is it related to the capabilities of the PC/Video card? I really don't know. Any report about this subject is welcome.

this is from The Sims 2 Nightlife CD Patch page

Capped the amount of half walls allowed on a single lot in order to prevent graphical corruption that would occur when this limit was broken

I use this mod and I could finish my building with the unleveled walls that are in the second icon. They work as the standard walls in the top floors.

Thank You for this Mod Numenor.

I already have the patches install and that doesn't do anything to change the problem.

I don't think that is the PC/Video Card, because this Mod solve my problem for now.

Is like having 4 set of walls only diferents but works for me.

Thanks again!!!

It's true, there is a wall limit, I think it's somewhere around 2500 sections, but I'm not sure. But, each of these custom walls has their own induvidual limit, which means if you run out of normal wall, you can use the "unleveled" wall, as it is visible, and has the same limit as the normal one. In other words, it doubles your wall capacity. So I guess all walls have a set limit in the game, whether they're custom or not.

After a little expirimenting, I found that the gap for almost all of the Maxis and custom windows is not deformed and in the right place. Almost is the kew word. YOUR seamless wall window and door set creates a gap that spreads all the way up the wall. And no glass fills the gap. So there is an open void.

Just thougt you'd ought to know!

Im megas3300 and I approve this message.

Megas, I know about the Wallwindows: that happens because the WW are the only windows that have a wallmask (the "hole") that goes all the way up, to the very end top of the wall. Other windows leave at least a small section of wall over the hole, and therefor no "huge gap" is created.

SimMaster - Here is very detailed report I recieved by email from a user:

TEST 1
Ground level installation
2100 total wall segments built on both one & five high levels; walls deletable & rebuildable
When adding a dormer unit, walls deletable but not rebuildable
Demolition of dormer allows wall inventory to be rebuildable again
TEST 2
56x56-tile perimeter foundation installation
1700 total wall segments built on one level; walls rebuildable
When modifying the foundation, walls deletable but not rebuildable
TEST 3
56x56-tile solid foundation installation
1896 total wall segments built on both one & five high levels; walls deletable & rebuildable
When modifying the foundation, walls deletable but not rebuildable

I tried to take a methodical, scientific approach to this experiment, creating each lot twice and receiving the same results.

I've finally started my Journal. Information only, no questions.

My latest activity: CEP 9.2.0! - AnyGameStarter 2.1.1 (UPD) - Scriptorium v.2.2f - Photo & Plaques hide with walls - Magazine Rack (UPD) - Animated Windows Hack (UPD) - Custom Instrument Hack (UPD) - Drivable Cars Without Nightlife (UPD) - Courtesy Lights (FIX) - Custom Fence-Arches - Painting-TV - Smarter Lights (UPD)

Oh, so it was 2100 segments, not 2500. Well, I knew I was close! I guess somewhere in the game files there's a set limit to the number of wall segments that can be put down. I wouldn't even begin to know where to look, but with your modding skills and knowledge of the game files maybe you can find the answer.

It can't be. You must have such a folder: you probably are looking in your documents folder, while you should look in the game installation folder (i.e. C:\Program Files\EA Games\etc...)

It's a text file, yes, you just need to extract it from the zip and put it in the folder pointed out in the "How to install" section (see first post). The peculiarity (and the risk) is that the text file will overwrite the original one by Maxis, therefore you are strongly adviced to create a backup copy of the original before overwriting it.

Hi, I had to reinstall the game and I noticed the walls were missing, but thats not quite my issue... I'm having trouble with the game crashing any time I click on an elevator to move, place, or delete, and I read somewhere that this wall might be related to it, so I downloaded the lite version and when I went to place it, i saw that I don't have a TS2 Data folder. Am I missing something?

There's an issue with my game every time I overwrite the original "walls.txt" with this new one... I MUST download it in order to use en7en's "Japanese Tea House" ...

1) The game's load times freeze every time I load into a lot; however it usually allows me in after I restart...

2) Also, When I move sims into the lot, time is frozen; as if it were paused... This happens on ALL lots; not just the Tea House's...

I've removed ALL my downloads, collections, EVERY player created ANYTHING that could've interfered and caused something like this... So I know without a doubt that this is, in fact, the culprit. Is there anything I can do to fix the walls file so it won't happen? I REALLY want to use that tea house...

By the way, I only have The original Sims 2, and The Sims 2: University.

Help?

I'd like to suggest a new wall to be added please - I have already been using it in my game, but I think lots of people will find it useful.

It's a normal wall but with mayCutAway false. I am now using this for many of my internal house walls, between rooms, so in cutaway mode you can still see in from outside, but you don't lose as much of the feel of the internal decor and atmosphere.

As a separate issue, I am trying to find a type of wall that you can use to divide an attic up into rooms without sticking through the roof, but I haven't been successful yet. I tried using the settings for Attic walls, but for some reason they only agree to build sort of buttresses one tile long.

Seppuku, Torturer, sorry for the delay, but the reason is that I don't know why this happens in your games; all the walls work fine in mine.

If anyone is still interested in the problem of the elevators not movable when already in place, yes, there is such a bug. If you don't like an elevator any more, you can hard-delete it using the testing cheats (activate the testing cheats, shift-click on the elevator and choose "Delete").

Inge - I haven't fiddled with the custom walls for long, so far; but I remembember that I tried (unsuccessfully) to find a solution for the attic walls. Eventually, I gave up, mostly because the attic parts lower than 3 tiles are not liveable anyway.

As for the not-cutting-away, I can add it to the wall list.

I am going to try and attach a screenshot to show you what fun I had with the attic walls.

In fact they *do* work for dividing the loft - they cast shadows to prove they are following the shape of the roof. But the game is not rendering them other than these wedge-shaped cutaways.

I love the "no cut-away" idea! I usually build small bathrooms and I use the open shower separated by one wall piece in a corner, and the wall always goes down in that area, it drives me crazy! I also hate it when you always see the garage from inside a house.
Thank you Numenor!

Oh, and just a question: I suppose that if I don't want a wall I should delete the part of the text refering to that walls in my walls.txt file?

I just checked the file, and the cutaway wall doesn't appear to have made it into this release. That's using the manual version, not the installer, which I don't want to use at the moment.

Thanks Inge, I'm using the manual version too, I have a Mac. I guess I'll have to be patient for that one!

I was wondering... for all those maxis walls that are not in catalog, would deleting the line "not in catalog" make them show up? And would it be worth it?

You need to add an icon reference I think - or maybe it would show up witha blank icon if you didn't, I am not sure. As to whether the other wall types are good to have for building, attic walls are useful *only* to replace end walls you accidentally deleted too long ago to use Undo on. I am currently playing with the stage walls, which happen to be just the right height to make those very low attic walls like you get in some houses near the eaves (for looks only, of course the sims can't get into the low bits)

OK, the two ZIPs for the manual installation now include the No-CutAway wall.
Remember that the two ZIPs only contain MY walls, not the ones created by other modders.

I've taken the chance to convert the "light" version to zip format, since Mac users might find difficult to manage RARs.

Also, the instructions for the manual installation have been improved a little, and I've attached a backup of the Maxis-only "walls.txt", for those that have lost their backup copy of the original Maxis file.

FAQ: What happens if I build a lot containing custom walls and then I remove the custom walls definitions from my game?
What happen if I download and install a lot containing custom walls, but I didn't install the custom walls in my game?
In such cases, depending on the game version (base game, UNI, NL...), the game will either:
- Remove completely the missing custom walls, as if they were never built (OFB games and newer), or
- Replace the missing custom walls with the black iron fence from the base game.
The game shouldn't crash, or at least this never happened in my tests.

So this means that if I make a house to share those who install it need to have your hack. Good to know!
I have another question... I deleted the "invisible" and "prison" walls, so I just kept the "eneven" and "no cut-away" (Which I LOVE so much, thank you again!), if I share a house with somebody that has your hack will it delete "invisible" and "prison" from their game? Prabably not, but I'd like to make sure.

Sorry for being such a pain with this question! :D

No, no, don't worry. The definitions for the custom walls are installed by each user automously, and can't be deleted installing a lot, because the lot doesn't contain any wall definition: the lot just uses walls that must already have been installed elsewere in the game folders.

So, let me state this clearly once more, for the casual readers (especially those who are afraid to unknowingly export "hacks" along with their lots):
the custom walls definition are NOT exported with the lots.

Numenor this is great stuff - if I can get everthing to work *lol*
Thank you so much for all the stuff you shared with us.

Here is my problem: I installed a house from a friend - built with your walls.
I Installed the scriptorium.
I still have my updated scripts in game.
I moved your files from above in the folder scriptorium walls fences Arches.

Now: The old problem that walls was missing before I installed your walls is solved.

The new thing is: every file starting with "seamless" is blue also all HeliosDoors by Windkeeper are blue (*cry*).

I'm German so probably I did not understand everything.
What did I miss or what did I do wrong.

Thanks for any help!

Edit to add: I just installed the new CEP and the game went to the point before you go to a NBH and when I clicked on the button about the Custumobjects it crashed.

1) About the "seamless" objects flashing blue - This happens because you are probably missing the "main" seamless file, the one that contains all the textures for the entire set; it is named Numenor_WallWindow_Seamless_Window_main.package and you should have it in your Downloads. If you don't, then download it from the WallWindow thread (it's contained into the archive "WallWindow_Seamless_BASIC_set_UPD-15jan06.zip").

2) About the flashing blue HeliosDoors: I think that what explained above applies to those doors, too; but I can't know for sure. Ask Windkeeper.

3) The "button about the custom objects" is this one? (click to enlarge)
1
If so, it's strange... Clicking on that button enables the custom content but doesn't load it: you need to restart the game in order to actually have the custom content loaded in your game.
Anyway, try removing the CEP, and see if the game works fine; then reinstall the CEP and restart the game, to be sure that it's CEP the cause of this crash.

Bubble, download and install the SCRIPTORIUM (you need to do that only once, to activate the support for custom walls).
When done, download the file "CustomWalls_for_Scriptorium.zip". Looking in your Downloads folder, you will see a new shortcut "Scriptorium_Walls-Fences-Arches": open it and put the desired walls in that folder (you can also drag&drop).

Note: inside the file CustomWalls_for_Scriptorium.zip there are many walls. The one you need is the "Unleveled wall"; ignore the others, you don't need to install them.

Default Thread Update!
28 OCT 2006 - I've UPDATED all my custom walls, to ensure compatibility with PETS, and also to add a CUSTOM CATALOG DESCRIPTION, so that you can locate them easier.

Before installing the new walls, please DELETE the old text files from the Scriptorium folder (Unleveled, Invisible, Prison and NoCutAway).
Then download the desired walls from post #1 and unpack all the files included (the text file AND the .package) into the Scriptorium folder.

If you don't have Pets, the updated walls will have the new custom description; but if you have Pets, you will gain also the new Pets tools: the "Diagonal Room" tool and the "Octagonal Room" tool.

With Pets, the catalog will look like this:
.

If after having updated the walls you still have missing icons, be sure to clean up the icon cache, by opening the folder (documents)\EA Games\The Sims 2\Thumbnails and DELETING all the packages within that folder (the game will recreate them on the first run).

I'm not sure to understand...

If you, so far, have installed the custom walls "manually", by pasting the data into the walls.txt, then you have to replace the relevant sections of the walls.txt with the code taken from the updated walls. But you won't have the custom catalog description!

On the other hand, if you are going to install the Scriptorium, then the easiest way to manage the "transition" to the new system is to delete the four custom walls (unleveled, invisible, prison and no-cut-away) from the walls.txt, and put the text files (and the connected .package) downloaded from this thread into the proper Scriptorium folder.

If you don't install the Scriptorium, you can't follow the instructions from post #1 in order to install the walls (there is no "Scriptorium" folder where to copy the text files).
If you don't want to use the Scriptorium (it's a democracy: anyone can do what he wants ) then you have to manually edit a game file (the walls.txt), which is certainly more difficult and risky than using the Scriptorium

If you are interested, the "walls.txt is located in program files\EA Games\The Sims 2\TSData\Res\Catalog; open it and append at the end the text copied from the Unleveled wall TXT file, downloadable above.
