No cheat, it's a game option called "Free rotate" .. choose the "pick up" tool then hold down the ALT key, instead of clicking once to pick up an object you click and hold the mouse button too and as you move the mouse around the object it will rotate freely, it won't snap to the 45 degree angle. You can also pick up anb object and hold the ALT key to place objects on the floor without them snapping onto the grid.
