A Bed for your Vampires - Sims 2 Conversion

This is a new mesh, and means that it's a brand new self contained object that usually does not require a specific Expansion pack (although this is possible depending on the type). It may have Recolours hosted on MTS - check below the description for more information.
UPDATE 19th OCTOBER 2011: Updated with new file fixed to work with patch 1.26/Pets, thanks to Grant Hess's RigFix. The new file is on the Download page, with a filename beginning with PETS. The new file is NOT backwards-compatible, so if you don't have Pets or are not going to update with the 1.26 patch, please use the old version.

UPDATE 13 NOVEMBER 2010: I've now installed Late Night and this bed works fine with the new vampires. You can choose to have them sleep in it instead of the Late Night coffin bed - they sleep inside it like a regular sim (just like depicted below) rather than levitating over it like they do with the Late Night beds. So you now have a choice between two different vampire beds and styles of sleeping, according to your preference. I have both beds in my vampire family's house for variety!

Here's a nice bed for your Vampire simmies.

It's a conversion of the vampire coffin bed from The Sims 2. It will be found under Bedroom, Beds and costs 900 simoleons.

It has two recolourable channels: the interior lining, and the coffin exterior and platform. The coffin shell comes out much darker than the platform, so gives the impression of the two items being two separate colours. (ETA: At the time I made this item, which was my first-ever object, I was unaware of how to make three separate colour channels. In CaST, only the first 2 channels are used for this item, the other two are non-functional.)

ISSUES: Being a conversion of a Sims 2 item of a non-standard size and shape that The Sims 3 is not coded to accommodate, some clipping will occur in two circumstances:

When the sim makes the bed, their feet will clip through the platform, as seen in the first shot in the pic below. The bed must be placed against the wall or else the sim may also try to make the bed from the lid side and end up clipping through the lid as well as the platform. But it can't go directly against the wall - it must be positioned with a gap, as shown in the second shot, or else the lid will clip through the wall.

Also, because there are no blankets or bedspreads, the sim's body is visible when it sleeps, and it does some pretty strange distortions with its feet and arms during sleep, so it's best not to look from above, as in the third shot.

It also goes without saying that the lid doesn't close, as there is no animation for that in The Sims 3.

Aside from those small points, the bed looks great and makes a really nifty resting place for your vamps. Just be sure to remove all windows in the bedroom to prevent sunlight getting in!

INSTALL INSTRUCTIONS:

Unzip the .zip file, and copy the .package file to your Mods\Packages folder. If you don't have a Mods\Packages folder and/or don't know how to install .package files, please see full instructions here: http://www.modthesims.info/wiki.php...g_Package_Files

Polygon Counts:

Additional Credits:
An enormous THANK YOU to HugeLunatic for helpful advice on joint assignment for this oddball item, so that the bed would no longer disappear as soon as the sim used it! All working nicely now with no more levitating sims.

Made with s3oc, S3PE and Sims 3 Object Tool.

Tested with Delphy's Sims 3 Dashboard for 'Blue Lot Syndrome' and came up clean.

Don't forget to Thank the creator after downloading! Use the Thanks button located above the screenshots above.
Quick Guide:

1. Click the file listed on the Files tab to download the file to your computer.
2. Extract the zip, rar, or 7z file. Now you will have either a .package or a .sims3pack file.

For Package files:

1. Cut and paste the file into your Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 3\Mods\Packages folder. If you do not already have this folder, you should read the full guide to Package files first: Sims 3:Installing Package Fileswiki, so you can make sure your game is fully patched and you have the correct Resource.cfg file.
2. Run the game, and find your content where the creator said it would be (build mode, buy mode, Create-a-Sim, etc.).

For Sims3Pack files:

1. Cut and paste it into your Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 3\Downloads folder. If you do not have this folder yet, it is recommended that you open the game and then close it again so that this folder will be automatically created. Then you can place the .sims3pack into your Downloads folder.
2. Load the game's Launcher, and click on the Downloads tab. Find the item in the list and tick the box beside it. Then press the Install button below the list.
3. Wait for the installer to load, and it will install the content to the game. You will get a message letting you know when it's done.
4. Run the game, and find your content where the creator said it would be (build mode, buy mode, Create-a-Sim, etc.).

Extracting from RAR, ZIP, or 7z: You will need a special program for this. For Windows, we recommend 7-Zip and for Mac OSX, we recommend Keka. Both are free and safe to use.

Nope, that animation does not look at all right with this mesh. (Also, having a vampire hovering over an open coffin rather than sleeping in it doesn't really make sense anyway! )

As far as I know, SN doesn't add a new floating animation, seems to be the same as the one that came with LN.

It might be possible, but it would be very difficult and time-consuming and require a lot of knowledge of animating, and the relevant software to do it with. If you do want to try doing it yourself, you would extract the animations from the original Sims 2 item and remake them for Sims 3. Coincidentally, a thread has just been started on that subject here, which you might want to take a look at in case it points you in the right direction: http://www.modthesims.info/showthread.php?t=513329

Does this bed still work after Supernatural? Mainly with the 1.67 update.

Yes. Despite its unusual appearance it's just a regular bed, so it will work with any update that doesn't specifically change the coding of regular beds. Just make sure you're using the PETS version and not the old original version.

It was cloned from a regular single bed, so if your children are of an age that they can sleep in a regular single bed, then they should be able to use this (I hope - it's been a long time since I played TS3).

I love this item! Thanks so much for sharing it with us

Is it possible to make the platform using it's own color channels?
Right now it is using the same as the coffin, at it looks very weird. I'd love to be able to make a stone platform, for example.

Don't know what you mean about the platform using the same colour channel as the coffin, because it is not the same channel, as is clear from both the screenshots and the description. In any case, it would probably be possible to add an additional colour channel to the platform, but no more than one, because a TS3 object can only have a maximum of 4 colour channels and this item already has 3. If you want to try doing it yourself, feel free. (I no longer support my TS3 creations.)

Glad you like the item anyway, thank you

I've read the description, and looked at the pictures. But in my game, this is what the object looks like

4 channels, coffin and platform uses the same channel, and there are 2 channels that seems to be re-coloring nothing.

I have your most recent update of the pets version.

I fired up my old TS3 game and saw what you mean - this was the first object I ever made, nearly 6 years ago, and you are the first person (including me) to notice this! Yes, the base and coffin shell are indeed mistakenly using one channel instead of two as intended - I guess the reason nobody ever noticed was that the shell is so much darker than the platform.

Unfortunately I've just spent the last couple of hours trying to fix it (having thought it would be a quick easy fix) but nothing I tried worked as expected, all resulting in worse problems than the original. I retired from TS3 creation 3 years ago and am completely rusty at TS3 creation techniques, and totally not interested in 'going there' ever again, hence why my profile page says I no longer support my TS3 creations. Really sorry - as mentioned, if you know how to work on TS3 objects you're very welcome to have a go at remasking it. Sorry not to be of help.

Ah, bummer =/
I was also hoping it was something that was easy to fix. I have no experience what so ever working with TS3 objects - other than changing a few things in sp3e, so I wasn't looking forward to try to fix it myself. :P
I have tried to find some kind of tutorial for how to fix something like this, but as I don't really know the first thing about creating objects, I wasn't able to find anything I could understand.

Thanks for looking into it though!
I will continue to try to solve the problem, maybe look for someone else that knows how to do it.

Thanks anyway, I will still use the bed, because it's awesome!

Someone else may have converted this same item - after all, it's a TS2 item converted to TS3, not my own creation, and many creators did TS2 to TS3 conversions, so it might be worth Googling to see if there's another conversion on some other site which was colour-masked better. This was my first object and I was very inexperienced back then - rather embarrassing really, to find out it had that flaw all this time!

I have already googled it - and yours is the only one I've been able to find thus far.

I understand that you feel embarrassed, but hey, as you said, you were inexperienced! It's totally ok. And the bed works as a bed, which is most important.
I know of objects from experienced people, that doesn't even work as intended, so don't feel bad!

Hee hee, yes, at least I've always fully tested my creations on three different PCs with three different settings, to make sure they work correctly! I was just too new at the technique of TS3 texturing back then to make the CaST channels properly on this item. I've now changed the text in the description to say that it has two channels, not three - thank you for discovering the problem!

All my sims are vampire so this will be the perfect bed for them. I do find that the animation is quite off when using this bed. Still it does look good.
