Picked Upload! This is a picked upload! It showcases some of the best talent and creativity available on MTS and in the community.
Some of you might have followed the "making" of this, but it's finally here! No more blinding snow textures or icicles, and more frost! Whee!

Now, I started this project entirely by accident. Or more like curiousity. No one seemingly had made a snow mod or replacement mod in that regard which made me more curious as to why! When I went in checking the textures, I noticed they were "Uncompressed". Meaning, that S3PE wouldn't preview the images but opening them up in a graphics editor also didn't do the job. It took a bit of research as to what could potentially make it "compressed" and funnily (And I guess supposedly because of the nature of this mod, ironically?) the skyrim community had been dealing with these sorts of textures for so long, there was so much on what to use and how to properly export it into something useful! So that's what I did

And thus, I started gathering some pictures I took previous winter but also checked out some references and what was the best method to approach this and what exactly did I want to change?

Version 1 info

Quote:
An override filled with textures to make your game more frosty looking and even more realistic if you're into those sorts of things!

What's being overwritten?
  • The terrain snow textures are entirely redone.
  • Frosty windows and glass now has more detailed frost on it
  • A fix for that annoying and ugly "Grass" patches.
  • Icicles no longer need sunglasses to be looked at. Also has a new texture!
  • Roads got bumpier and more detailed (For the tech people among us, it now has a different normal map)

Since I had to edit a lot of texture files, it could happen that I overlooked something while testing and might not look good. In that case, please make sure to leave a comment and feedback and I'll try to fix it as soon as possible! Overall I didn't see anything that would potentially break/make ugly. But again, if you do I would really appreciate it!

This mod will work with 1.67/1.69! and any patch version that doesn't go as far back as seasons. This also means Seasons is required!

NOTE: This is an override mod meaning, that EA's textures are overwritten with mine. This means that if someone ever were to make their own snow texture replacement mods, it WILL conflict with this mod.

Thanks for this. I am totally an environmental/lighting mod junkie. I haven't used a snow replacement before, but you're right—EA's is weirdly, blindingly white. Really looking forward to seeing yours!

For those of you that are saying that this is "better" it literally looks the same as the EA version and not worth downloading. It could be better.

Either the override of package folder should work! I've always tested it in my package folder, but for the sake of organisation, I'd suggest putting it in your override folder

hrm it's more of a retouch, that's true. The colours are a tad less whiter than EA's, I've fixed a few bug fixes (See the porch for example). However, the snow does come with an entirely new texture, which is also 2k. (Ea's wasn't) Now, retexturing snow is... an interesting one. Because snow by itself doesn't *necessarily* have a texture to begin with. Here are the textures:

EA'S default snow texture:

This replacement's Snow texture:

So mine just indeed has more details added to it, whereas EA's is just more flat . Now I do get that at first glance you can't really see it since over time I lowered the contrast and highlights by a lot...

Here are version 1 and 2 I made before deciding the currently uploaded one looked better:

I could always release one of those versions though in the future! So that people who want a somewhat 'harder' texture of snow, can actually get it.  So if any of you would like such a thing, I'd love to know!
