So after a bit more redecorating and fiddling, I used up the budget.

The classic red barn colors appealed to Sarah; and there is plenty to do outdoors with a play area for Daniel with some cozy chairs for Tom and Sarah, a swing, and a small garden complete with a small barn shaped shed for garden supplies. The interior is classic country, comfortable and toddler friendly with lots of open space.
