Storybook style was a unique and short-lived variety of architecture that was briefly popular in the 1920s. That’s not to say that this unusual little house was built in the 20s, of course. In fact, it’s unclear how this house came into being, or if the street on which it was built even officially exists. An especially intrepid journalist attempted to look into this about a decade ago, but the particular filing cabinet in the Moonlight Falls Hall of Records that she needed (Department of Housing and Landownership – Zone M Surveys ca. 1850 – 1950) mysteriously burst into flames.

A mystery for the ages, to be sure.

As you can imagine, this home’s neither-here-nor-there nature has attracted a variety of eccentric owners over the years. Its current occupant is a gentleman known simply as The Professor. What exactly he is a professor of is as unclear as the origin of his house, although he does spend a great deal of time gardening and collecting artifacts on foreign expeditions. The same journalist who had investigated the property records posed as a house sitter during one of The Professor’s many trips abroad, and had this to report:

Reporter: What exactly are you a professor of?
Professor: Well, I suppose I’m what your kind might call an anthropologist.
R: My “kind”?
P: Err… yes. House sitters.
R: And what would that make your kind, then?
P: A magi—[indecipherable coughing noise]—millinery historian.
R: You study… hats. You need to go abroad to study hats.
P: Sure.

The journalist went on to describe how after giving her a tour of the house The Professor advised her against opening up the wardrobe in the bedroom. “You can’t be too careful with those things… you never know where they’re going to take you. And anyway this one’s just full of old winter coats.” Before the journalist could ask him anything further, she reported that the portrait over the fireplace rolled its eyes and remarked that it “wasn’t expecting the Spanish Inquisition.”
