Here's the finished, furnished version of TheFlyingRaccoon's shell
Object: Hipster Barstool by Big Daddy
Assigned colors: Pale Yellow, Bright Red, & Pale Blue
Style: '50s
I'll admit right up front that I'm not as happy with this design as I'd hoped to be, but I've tried a lot of different designs, and this was the only one that didn't seem ridiculous in one way or another. My style was just 50's, instead of 1950's, but my object was the diner bar-stool, so that made short work of my first (sarcastic) idea of doing an 1850s kitchen!
My first REAL idea was the traditional stereotype of the 1950's- i.e., lots of brushed aluminum and molded plastic, and I tried LOTS of variations on this theme. Unfortunately, none of them ended up looking like a place that someone could ever actually call home... they all just felt like I was pretending that someone had made their own kitchen into a diner. I thought about justifying it by saying that it was someone who was a huge fan of that style and CHOSE to make their kitchen feel like it was beating you over the head with 1950's diner-style, but that didn't really seem to be in the spirit of the contest.
My next thought was the one that eventually led to this design- a 1950's kitchen for a family that was still kind of working its way up the social ladder. They wouldn't have all the nicest, newest things, (maybe Dad was hurt in WWII and wasn't able to work as much as someone else would have) but they would still want to be "keeping up with the Joneses," as it were, so things like a TV and a good-sized record player were a must! To give myself a little more freedom in the creative process, I imagined this kitchen as also being the room off the back door to a house, so it would function as a living space off the back yard, instead of just a cooking and eating area.
The colors are all used, just not as obviously as the might perhaps be in other shells... The pale blue is on the tiles in the actual kitchen space, the pale yellow is on the curtains, the appliances, and (sort of) in the light woodgrain on many surfaces, like the TV or table and chairs, and the bright red is on the two recliners on either side of the record player (and on one of the cereal boxes too ). The stools are naturally placed at the bar... I really can't imagine any other use for them, can you? Overall, while the style might not scream 1950s, I feel like this room wouldn't be at all out of place during that decade.
As with EVERYTHING I make, there's no CC here, and as with my Round 1 submission, John Doe lived on the lot during my creation of it, so everything is playtested and functional. (and unfortunately, unsharable, thanks to his evil, lot-corrupting presence!)
