Once Upon A Time Series. Books 1 & 2 Complete. Book 3 in progress!
Chapter One - CoronationIt’s Coronation Day in the Kingdom of Eleabeth. King Leonardo Daynes, loyal and beloved Patriarch of the kingdom, has crowned his new Queen. It’s a beautiful sunny day in the courtyard of their palace. The entire Kingdom bates their breath for her reveal.
The Queen prepares for her entrance, her blue silk dress billowing in the wind. She smiles as it blows against her face. The air tastes sweet and bitter at the same time. She can hear the crowd of subjects awaiting her introduction.
“Presenting her Royal Highness, your Queen. Regina Daynes.” The Grand Knight to the King proclaims loudly.
The entire Kingdom erupts in thunderous applause.
The people babble among themselves,”Isn’t the Queen beautiful?”
“Did you see her hair?”
“She holds the crown so well”
The crowd is so loud they cannot hear the Grand Knight announce their King. He joins his wife on the balcony, to renewed applause from the crowd, and takes her hands in his.
“I’m so happy today.” he whispers to her with a smile.
He glances back at his daughter Sno, standing just out of view; anxiously awaiting her entrance as well. Just thirteen years old, and already so grown up. Her silk midnight blue gown flows elegantly around her.
Regina responds,”I too am thrilled husband. This day is one of my happiest. May we eternally feel this joy from this moment forward.”
The King nods and kisses her hand, before approaching Sno.
She stands with tears in her eyes.
“Father, I am so scared… worried… frightful. Today is the day I am to become the official Princess of the people. How can I lead such a large group? How will I know what to do? What they’ll need?” Sno asks, fixing her father a fearful gaze.
Leo looks lovingly at his daughter. Barely thirteen. He can feel the pain and the worry in her voice. He smiles comfortingly.
“Dearest Sno, I know someday you will make a fine Queen. You will be a benevolent leader, an inspiration to the people. They will love you and they will trust you. I have the utmost faith in you my daughter.”
With his kind words steering her nerves, Sno steps onto the balcony in view of the kingdom.
The Grand Knight to the King proclaims loudly, “It is my honor, Kingdom of Eleabeth, to present your Princess! Her Majesty, Sno Daynes!”
As Sno waves graciously to the crowd, Regina appears to stiffen. She furls her brow and tightens her lips. As the new Queen, Regina has taken on the role of Sno’s stepmother, A necessary appointment, though Regina sees Sno as weak and soft.
“She will never be strong enough to rule this land..” Regina murmurs quietly to herself.
Sno raisies her arms to quiet the boisterous crowd. “My loyal subjects, thank you for accepting me as your Princess. I know that one day, I will be your Queen…”
Regina’s face contorts with disgust as Sno continues her speech.
“…But I can only do that with your help. Every single one of you is special and a valued asset to our kingdom. I need all of you working with me, to help ensure our Kingdom’s continued reign of peace and prosperity. Thank you.”
The Kingdom erupts in deafening applause for Sno. King Daynes is pleased with her introduction to the Kingdom. As the royal family draws back inside the castle, the Queen pulls Sno aside.
“Just because you have a tiara now, doesn't mean you know anything about being a Queen.” Regina snarls ferociously.
Sno hangs her head in embarrassment.
“Step Mother, I regret if I have in some way offended you. That wasn't my intent. I hope that as we rule together, we can also grow together, and you can teach me to be a respectable and beloved Queen, as I hope you will be.”
Regina rolls her eyes in disapproval, she doesn't care what Sno says, it will never be enough. Without another word passing between them, Sno takes her leave and heads for her chambers, It has been a long and exciting day and she is eager to climb into her bed.

Regina seems mean... I'm pretty sure she'll plot against her stepdaughter.

Once Upon A Time Series. Book One: There Was. Chapter Two - The Whites
Chapter Two - The Whites
The sunrise begins its climb into the morning sky; It’s rays licking the land and peeking through the window of Sno’s bedroom. Sno opens her eyes and hears voices outside her window. She quickly leaps from bed and peers out. She sees a family whom she has never seen before. Her Father is already awake and speaking with the family.
“Another Royal family no doubt..” she utters to herself.
She notes the beautiful Crimson color of their clothing. This small and unassuming difference only means they are not of her land. The royal color of the kingdom of Eleabeth is midnight blue. All Eleabethian royalty wear it.
Sno gazes at the crimson clad family. First noting an older gentlemen, who appears to be wearing a crown. He has long blond hair to his shoulders. A beautiful woman, no doubt a Queen, stands next to him, displaying her beautiful crown. Her brunette hair wound tight. In her arms a small girl, no older than two, clutches her mother’s shoulder tightly. Sno smiles to herself, observing the tiny crown upon her head.
Continuing her examination of the family, she peers upon the the last figure. A young boy who appears to be about her age. He’s very handsome with blond hair and blue eyes or…were they green? Sno can’t be sure from the window. Her view is further obstructed by his large hat adorned with a feather.
As Sno watches, she sees her Father shake the gentlemen’s hand once more as they get into their carriage, ready to leave.
Sno quickly dresses and makes her way downstairs, she’s eager to talk to Father about this new family. Once downstairs, Sno seats herself at the breakfast table. Breakfast isn’t quite finished yet and Sno quietly sits alone until her father comes into the dining hall.
“Good morning Father.” Sno chirps giddily.
“And good morning to you my Daughter.” The King heartily replies, as he joins her at the breakfast table.
“May I inquire as to whom you were meeting with this morning? Sno asks quickly. Seeing her father’s knowing glance toward her, she continues, “My apologies, Father, I was awaken by the voices outside my bed chambers this morning. When I looked outside, I saw you were speaking with a family I did not recognize. I’m simply wondering who they are.”
The King smiles.
“Oh yes! That is the White family. King and Lady White have moved into The Kingdom of Aciemma across the river from here, about a 3 days ride. They have two children, a son, Charming, who is your age, and their young daughter, Mila, who’s only two years old.
Sno cannot hide her excitement.
“A Son? And he is my age?” she asks enthusiastically.
Leo laughs.
“Yes Dearest, a son your age. I have asked them to attend your Coronation Ball in the coming days. Is that alright?”
Sno’s face lights up.
“Of course Father! Please invite the whole kingdom! I’m so excited for the ball!” Sno replies with a big smile.
“It pleases me that you are so excited to throw this party for our subjects Daughter.” The King says in reply. “However, I wish you to know, the only subjects who will be attending, are those of your age. This is a ball to honor your Coronation, and a chance to meet with others who have shared the same amount of time on Earth as you.” The King replies returning her smile.
Just then Regina plods into the dining hall, “And what party is this..?” she interrupts suspiciously.
“Oh Stepmother, Father is throwing a Ball in honor of my Coronation. Isn’t that exciting?” Sno squeaks with joy, leaping out of her seat, as Regina takes hers.
Regina bites her tongue as she tries to hide her furled brow.
“Oh. Yes. That does sound like fun.” she lies excitedly, crossing her arms.

Once Upon A Time Series. Book One: There Was. Chapter Three - The Coronation Ball
Chapter 3 - The Coronation Ball
The coming days are busy to say the least. Sno is working hard alongside Marian and Esther to make sure everything is perfect for the guests when they arrive. Marian has never been much of a cook, so she has busied herself with the cleaning and organizing. She has swept and mopped the grand hall and the dining hall twice. She has found the best players of musical instruments in the land, and she has made sure that all the proper guests received their invitation to the Coronation Ball.
Meanwhile, Esther has prepared a great roasted Hog, with plenty of fresh vegetables and fruits from the royal garden. She has prepared the cider and gathered the nicest center piece for the table. Finally, everything is ready.
As the guests start to arrive, Sno greets them individually. She gives each of them a warm hug. Then takes their hand, and thanks them for coming. Most of them smile and bow or curtsy to her, since she is the Princess.
This evening feels different from the other balls thrown by the royal family. It might be the ages of those in attendance. Maybe it is her nerves. Either way, Sno has butterflies in her stomach. She feels nauseous and dizzy all at the same time.
Regina is ever present in the background, quietly judging all the guests in their formal attire without their knowledge. Then, Charming arrives. Sno graciously approaches him and pulls him into a hug.
“I’m Sno. Thank you so much for coming, please enjoy your evening.” she utters politely, Charming continues into the castle.
Sno is then startled by a beautiful woman, who follows behind him. She remembers her from the other morning. Bowing her head the woman stops and smiles.
“You must be Sno. I’m Lady White. I’m very pleased to be here with you tonight.” she states with a large smile.
“I’m pleased you are joining us tonight Lady White.” Sno says as she gives the foreign queen a warm hug.
Sno is surprised that Charming has brought his Mother, especially since this is a Ball for children in the kingdom, those who are her age. Regardless, she smiles back and hopes to make the best of the evening.
As the night progresses, Sno feels a connection with Charming she cannot explain. At dinner, she sits near him and she could swear her heart is going to flutter right outside her chest, because its beating so fast. After dinner, she knows she has to talk to him. As he makes his way to the cider table, she casually ambles closer to him.
“Enjoying yourself?” she asks quietly, attempting to catch his glance.
Charming, who is staring at the floor, looks up. He meets her eyes and smiles.
“Why yes. Thank you for asking.” he replies still smiling.
Sno looks away. She can’t explain this feeling inside of her, but she isn’t sure how to talk to him. He seems so standoffish, almost like he doesn’t want to be there. Twirling a strand of her hair, Sno prepares herself on what to say next, Suddenly, there is a loud ruckus in the main hall.
“I don’t even know why you are here!” Regina yells loudly.
“Well, of all the rude, inconsiderate, over bearing…” Lady White replies
Sno cannot focus on what on her thoughts because she is distracted by the commotion. Sno can’t believe it. Regina is having a heated argument with Charming’s Mother, Lady White! She hangs her head in mortification.
“This cannot be happening right now..” she mutters to herself.
Charming looks just as embarrassed as Sno feels. He is ashamed and he wants to say something and stick up for his Mother, but that means he would have to stand up to the Queen of another land. He knows that is improper and and would strain the tenuous relationship their families have built.
So instead, he puts his head down and makes his way to the dining hall, leaving the older women to argue with each other. Sno also makes her way to the dining hall. She hides near the counters shaking her head. She tries to pretend it isn’t real, that she is imagining it, but the arguing is loud and can be heard by everyone.
“And what is with your gown!? Surely you could have found something more appropriate than that!? Our servants wear nicer garments than those!” Regina continues.
Lady White is almost in tears at this point, and excuses herself to the garden. Regina nods in satisfaction before retiring to her bed chamber.
“I’m so sorry about my stepmother.” Sno squeaks as she and Charming stand together in the kitchen.
“This was not how I imagined this night” she offers further.
“Don’t worry about it.” Charming replies demurely. “Surely they know it was inappropriate and will make amends somehow. Although I don’t think my Father is going to take too kindly to someone being so mean and nasty to my Mother. Even if she is a Queen herself.” Charming says with a chuckle
Sno smiles ruefully.”Its a shame, That a fight its the last thing I will remember about tonight..” she adds hanging her head.
Charming grins. “I think I can change that. Would you dance with me?’ he asks putting out his hand.
Sno thinks she is going to faint, when she places her hand in his hand, it is like a bolt of lightning shoots right through her. The dance is over before she realizes it ever started. Charming brings her hand to his lips and kisses it. Sno wonders if he too had felt that jolt.
“Goodnight, fair lady..” Charming whispers in her ear as everyone begins to leave.
All Sno can do is blush.

Once Upon A Time Series. Book One: There Was. Chapter Four - Selena
Chapter Four - Selena
After the fiasco at the ball, things get pretty quiet around the castle. Sno learns the cause of Regina’s embarrassing display was because she isn’t in the right state of mind. Specifically, Regina is with child. All the castle is busy in preparation for the new baby. The King orders the woodcarver to fashion a new cradle with a matching dresser. He then charges the royal seamstress to weave a rug for the child’s nursery. Marian and Esther are working hard to ensure Regina has the most nutritious veggies and fruits available. There is to always be sustenance available to Regina, if she decides she is hungry.
Regina has since apologized to Lady White. She, being gracious and understanding, forgave her immediately. It inevitably helps that Regina is pregnant, and therefore in less control of her hormones. Lady White understands that stress that comes with growing a child, and holds none of Regina’s transgressions against her.
On a stormy, rainy night in Summer, Regina goes into labor.
The King waits outside the room as the handmaidens assist Regina in her bedchamber. Sno waits with her Father, though she can go in and assist, she decides that her place should be with her Patriarch. She holds his hand and gives him a hug when they finally hear the baby let out a loud strong cry.
“Congratulations Father!” Sno exclaims happily. “You’ve a child.”
“The King smiles.”And congratulations to you Daughter, you’re an elder sister.”
As they stand conversing, Marian comes out of the room, she wipes her hands on her apron and smiles wide.”My King, it’s a healthy baby girl.” she says happily bowing her head.
“Oh! A sister!” Sno cries enthusiastically. “When can we see her?”
“The Queen is ready now, if you would like.” Marian replies.
Sno bows her head. “Thank you Marian, so very much.”
“Yes, Marian, your service is greatly appreciated..” The King says graciously.
Sno smiles at Marian once more, then creeps to the door of the bedchamber. She opens the door slightly. “Step Mother, may I enter?”

Once Upon A Time Series. Book One: There Was. Chapter Five - Love Grows
Chapter Five - Love Grows
Autumn leaves are falling. The ground is speckled with a vast array of red, yellow, and orange. King and Lady White, Charming, and little Mila have made the journey from their kingdom to meet the new baby, Princess Selena.
After the obligatory ogling over the new baby, Charming decides he would much rather be getting to know Sno. He takes his leave and begins to search for her. He finds her in the kitchen doing her homework and asks to join her.
“Wouldn’t you rather see my new sister?” Sno asks, while hoping his answer will be no.
“Well, perhaps, but my teacher will fail me if I come back and my homework isn’t done.” Charming says, thankful that he could come up with a convincing motive.
“…Are you sure that’s the reason?” Sno asks, laughing.
“What else could it be?” Charming replies, laughing as well.
“My friend, Jade, came over today to do homework with me. She’s not feeling very well and has taken a moment to compose herself. Maybe you could help me with this next problem. I’ve been having difficulty with it.” Sno says.
Soon, both Sno and Charming are bent over their homework. Though they try not to let each other see, they’re more focused on the close proximity between one another. Sneaking glances at each other, while continuously trying to appear deep in thought over the complex problems before them.
Suddenly there is a loud commotion from the hall. It gets louder as the participants grow closer to the kitchen
“Your Highness, I’m so sorry. I didn’t know. I beg your forgiveness, Highness. I promise I would not have engaged in this event, had I known.” Jade pleads.
"Bah. I don't believe you! I ought to throw you in the dungeon. You are endangering my little girl with your selfish nonsense!" Regina snarls.
Jade had requested assistance in the lavatory when she became sick. Of course Esther and Marian were there to assist her. When Regina found out, she became furious. She feels personally attacked. As though Jade has purposely jeopardized the health of her young baby. Regina is angry and feels taken advantage of.
"You only came here because Charming was going to be here!" Regina continues on her tirade, as the argument finally makes it to the dining hall where Sno and Charming sit "You don't come here to enjoy my castle, or drink my cider, or sit at my table!" Regina continues.
Sno worryingly looks at Charming. "Please excuse me." she says regretfully.
She moves toward the arguing pair and bravely interrupts,
"Mother, that is quite enough! "Jade did not know she was sick. She did not come here tonight with the intention of harming anyone. Now can we please stop?" Sno implores.
Regina sneers angrily at Jade."Fine! But she leaves! Now!'
"Guards!" she yells.
The knights lead Jade out of the castle while Sno helplessly watches. She fears her stepmother is abusing her power. Maybe she has been given too much power, too quickly.
Regina, satisfied that the threat had been eliminated, retreats to her study in the basement. She prefers the solitary atmosphere down there by the dungeons. She faces the mirror attached to the wall. “There’s one way I can ensure Selena will be safe from harm.” She mutters to herself, “It’s my only hope.” Raising her arms, she says the words to the spell quickly.

Once Upon A Time Series. Book One: There. Was. Chapter Six - Unfit
Chapter Six - Unfit
It’s early morning as Sno arrives in the dining hall. She sees that Regina is already there waiting for her.
“Sno, we need to talk..” she says seriously.
Sno frowns, but follows her stepmother away from the table anyway.
“Sno, I want you to concede the throne to your sister, Selena. After all, she is the proper daughter of the King and Queen of Eleabeth. She’s bound to be a strong leader, she’ll do what needs to be done without fear of repercussions. You? Well, you are too nice. Too…pleasant. The kingdom needs someone they can fear! And my dear, that is not you!” Regina reasons loudly.
Sno is shocked that Regina feels that she is unfit to be Queen.
“Mother, the kingdom needs a leader. A royal they can look up to, someone with values and ambition. They need a ruler they can respect and love. You have it all wrong…I’m sorry. I am the rightful Queen.” Sno continues “It’s my birth right to be Queen when my father passes. I will not step aside for Selena. Though, I will not hinder her birth right either. She shall be Queen, and a fine one, but when it’s her turn.” Sno finishes proudly
Regina looks as though she is going to explode.
“You think you’re a ruler; that you make the decisions; when you really don’t.” she replies coldly.
Stewing with anger that Sno would deny her request, Regina seeks out the King. She finds him playing his early morning chess game in the far tower.
Regina thrusts herself angrily into the chair across from the King, who doesn’t notice her.
Enraged she hollers, “Darling! We need to talk about Sno! I don’t think she is fit to be Queen! I want her to let Selena take the throne first!”
The King is taken back by this request.
“My Queen, what’s brought about this preposterous appeal? Surely Sno will make a fine Queen. She will be a ruler the people can look up to, someone to admire. Why do you ask that she forfeit her birth right? Why would you deny Sno the throne?” The King asks stunned, standing and coming around to her side, as she stands.
Regina continues her tirade.
“Sno has no business ever being Queen! She’s too, nice. The kingdom needs someone strong enough to make the hard decisions! Someone who isn’t afraid to do what needs to be done, and Selena will be that Queen. She ought be the Monarch! Sno is nothing but a disappointment to me! She’s no ruler!” Regina continues in rage.
“Calm yourself my Queen, It’s true that Sno has much to learn and Selena’s still so young. We have time to prepare for this role. If it will make you happy, I will have the blacksmith fashion a tiara just for Selena in honor of her birthday. It will speak of the promise that she will one day be the Queen. My dear, all I ask in return is you resign yourself from speaking such hurtful things about Sno. If she ever found out how you feel, it would break her heart..” The King implores.
Regina realizes there will be no convincing the king.“ Of course, you’re right, my apologies Darling. Please Forgive me. I’m not sure what came over me. No doubt Sno is fit for the kingdom.”Regina says backing out of the room.
“… but after Selena.” Regina mutters under her breath, as she closes the door.

Once Upon A Time Series. Book 1: There Was. Chapter Seven - 16 Years
Chapter Seven - 16 years
An argument is unfolding near Regina’s basement study. Though loud, the participants are deep in the castle, and their voices carry no further than the hall they stand in.
“…You can’t be serious?” Esther asks dumbfound
“You. Did not. See. Anything. Do I make myself clear?” Regina states with a deadly expression on her face.
“I love my King. I am loyal to my King. Something you obviously know very little about! I have raised Sno since she was a tiny little babe wrapped in swaddling clothes. I will not turn a blind eye to this! I saw you Regina! I heard you plotting! I heard that you intend to hurt her!” Esther says outrage evident in her voice.
“Now. You listen to me, you peasant! You are fed by MY hand. You eat from MY table. Sno is MY daughter. This is MY business! And you WILL stay out of it!” Regina shouts.
…
“Happy Birthday dearest Daughter.” King Daynes heartily exclaims, pulling Sno into a tight hug. “I know today will be a special day, I have invited all your friends in Eleabeth to enjoy the festivities tonight.”
“Oh Father. I cannot believe I am finally sixteen years old. Tonight is sure to be a momentous occasion.” Sno beams excitedly.
Daughter, you’ve become such a beautiful woman. I have many great plans in mind for you… so many talents you have, and so much love in your heart. I cannot wait to see where life will take you…”
…
That evening, the castle is very busy. A table had been erected to hold the precious gifts that Sno will receive.. A roasted Pig is set out with many precious delicacies and sweet treats. All her friends are in attendance. And then Charming walks into the grand hall.
“Announcing his Royalty, Prince Charming White..” The Grand Knight proclaims from the hall.
Sno becomes nervous. Her palms start to sweat. She looks around and catches the glance of another guest, she quickly bows her head and smiles; gracefully making her way to the nearest lavatory to gather herself.
“Sno?” Someone calls, as she walks away quickly. The call diverts her attention. Sno turns to look, and runs right into Charming.
“Oh my… Your Highness. My apologies.” she starts first.
Charming reddens. “Certainly not. Undoubtedly you deserve my apologies Princess. Clearly I should watch where I am walking.” he continues.
Sno giggles. “I’m sure we can make this less awkward if we try…” she whispers into his ear, smiling demurely.
“Why Princess… I’m sure you are quite right.” Charming replies, holding out his hand. “Would you honor me with a dance?” he asks complacently.
Sno smile widens. “But of course Your Highness.” she replies, placing her hand in his.
Charming, struggling for conversation, asks about Sno’s sister.
Sno answers calmly, “Selena is a welcome addition to our kingdom. She is already a strong willed child. You should hear my stepmother talk about her.”
Sno then realizes bringing up her stepmother, may not be the best idea. She blushes and stops talking.
Charming smiles and looks toward the table of gifts.
“So many gifts Highness. Whatever do you think you’ve received?” he asks looking back at her.
Sno bows her head. “But of course, I wouldn’t know, Highness. There are so many gifts I have received and what could possibly be in all of them, I could not even begin to fathom. But if you would, you could humor me and whisper into my ear what it is you have brought me..” Sno finishes blushing.
In an instant, Charming leans down and kisses her. It happens so fast, Sno doesn’t even have time to react, and so she pulls him back in for another, longer kiss.
“Happy Birthday Princess. Please accept this, my gift to you. Naught but a simple kiss.” Charming whispers into her ear.
Sno smiles wide, covering her mouth in an attempt to hide the blush creeping over her face.
…
The evening continues and soon the guests are ready to leave. Charming has danced with Sno all evening. They have talked, laughed and simply enjoyed the company of one another. As the music stops, and the other guests make their way to the castle doors, Charming stops and pulls Sno aside.
“Darling Sno, it would make me…so very happy, …if I could… court you… Highness.” he asks with a slight cough, obviously nervous.
Sno’s face lights up.”But of course your Highness. It would be an honor.” Sno replies.
Charming kisses her lips once more before heading home for the evening.

Once Upon A Time Series. Book One: There Was. Chapter Eight - Then One Day
Chapter Eight - Then One Day
Two years have passed. Sno and Charming’s love steadily blossoms. Selena learns to walk and talk. The kingdom is at peace. Regina appears happy, raising Selena has softened her heart. Then on the day after Sno’s eighteenth birthday, everything changes.
“I can’t let you do it!” Esther yells loudly in the main hall.
“Keep your voice down, peasant! You dare presume to tell me what I can or cannot do? I will be performing a service to the kingdom.” Regina spits out, anger evident in her voice. “She isn’t fit to rule. She should never have been ordained. If you dare tell anyone, I’ll make sure you’re the next to go.” she promises, pointing a long finger at Esther.
With her threat hanging in the air, she pushes past Esther. Esther stands contemplating what the Queen had said. Memories flood her mind: Sno wrapped as a babe…handing the new child to the King…of the first Lady Daynes, Sno’s Mother. Esther recalls the King taking her in as a teenager. Shortly after her own mother had passed away, he had given her work and a place to live.
“I cannot sit idly by and watch this happen.” she resolves to herself, and sets out in search for the King.
Esther finds him, entertaining guests in the dining hall.
“Your Majesty, my deepest apologies, but I need to speak with you immediately.” she says quietly, bowing her head.
The King, noting the worried expression on her face, sets down his goblet and stands. He joins her a short distance from the table.
“I’m sorry again Sire. but I have urgent news. The Queen is plotting an evil against Princess Sno. She has a plan to make it so Sno shall sleep forever. I am grieved to bring this news to you because I am loyal to my Queen, but this is a great evil she has perpetrated, and I cannot not sit idly by and watch it happen.” Esther frantically gasps.
“Esther, dear. How have you come upon this information? By what means has this troubling matter come to involve you?” The King asks worried. “Surely you have misheard, My Queen would surely not hurt the Princess?”
Esther stares at him in shock. “You don’t believe me?” she asks shaken. She had been so sure that the King would listen and trust her word.
The King smiles, a distant look in his eye. “Sweet Esther, thank you for bringing this knowledge to me. I shall get to the bottom of this egregious misunderstanding. Please return to your duties.
Esther bows her head and leaves his presence. The King holds his smile until she is out of his presence, then he takes leave of his guests and hurries to the highest tower. There he finds his most trusted messenger.
“Make haste and send a message to Prince Charming White, our dear Princess is in grave danger! Going by Horseback will take far too long…I know not how much time we have. Please use the fastest Pigeon we have. Tell no one what I have entrusted of you”
“It will be done your Highness.”
The Messenger bows his head and hurries off.

Once Upon A Time Series. Book One: There Was. Chapter Nine - Gold and Glass
Chapter Nine: The Gold and Glass
Charming is resting in the royal garden. The sun has just peaked and is slowly rising into the sky. Birds and butterflies flutter about. He sighs in contentment. Everything is perfect.
Then a royal messenger from the castle rushes into the garden.
"Your Highness, please forgive the intrusion, I have an urgent message from King Daynes of Eleabeth."
The messenger hands Charming the small scroll that arrived by Pigeon moments before.
As Charming reads, his blood grows cold. His heart feels like it has stopped beating, he drops the scroll and runs from the garden, leaving the messenger there alone. He rushes into the palace main hall.
"Father! Mother!" He shouts from the center of the entrance.
King and Lady White are enjoying a quiet breakfast in the nook tower, when they hear Charming's calls. Quickly, they rush from the tower, to the main hall.
"Son? What is the matter? Are you alright?" Lady White asks frantically.
"We've received a message from Eleabeth. I must leave at once for King Daynes castle, Sno is in great danger!"
Lady White gasps. King White frowns.
“What kind of danger? It must have something to do with Lady Daynes. Do not worry, my son, she will not get away with it.” he assures Charming.
Charming nods in agreement, and then runs to the stables.
"Bernard!" he calls loudly. But the stable hand is no where to be found.
Charming decides that he doesn't have time to wait. He grabs the saddle himself and saddles his Horse. Once the saddle has been securely fastened, he leaps on. Impatiently he waits for the castle knights to raise the strong metal gate before galloping swiftly toward Eleabeth.
Back in Eleabeth, King Daynes and his Queen find Sno lying on the floor in the master hallway near her room. The King feels haunted by what Esther told him earlier. Was Sno’s condition his fault? Perhaps he had not acted quickly enough. The Queen denies any involvement, but the King can’t resist blaming her in his heart.
Though Sno appears dead, they notice that she is still breathing. All efforts to raise her produce no results. Try as they might, Sno does not awaken.
The King continuously pressures Regina to reveal her part in this travesty. She remains steadfast in her denial of any involvement. Because the King believes what Esther has told him, he knows that Sno is unlikely to wake.
That same morning, The King calls upon his most loyal blacksmith. Although he is more known for making his swords and armory, he tasks him with the mission of creating a casket for Sno. He wants the casket to be made of glass and gold.
The Queen voices her concerns against a casket that makes Sno visible, but the King is unyielding, and so the casket is made.
The blacksmith fashions a beautiful golden frame and employs the glassmaker to create flawless glass to the exact dimensions. Both craftsmen work diligently and the casket is finished by that evening.
The next morning, the King has her body placed into the casket. He orders his most trusted Knights to keep watch night and day. He finds himself at her side frequently, crying and begging Sno to wakeup, but it is no use.

After two days with no response from Sno, the king resigns himself to the fact that she may never awaken. He is desperate for answers. He feels angry and grieved.
The Queen watches from a distance, counting down the days. She knows that if the spell is not broken within 7 days, her breath will cease and she will die.
Esther also watches from a distance. She is fearful that the Queen will kill her next. Because of the King’s incessant questioning of the Queen, Esther fears that Regina may know that she has told. She is too scared to even come to Sno’s side. She doesn't know that Sno still breathes. She thinks that Sno is dead.
As the sun sets over the hilltop at the end of the second day, Charming finds himself exhausted. His horse is also completely worn out. Charming knows they should stop and rest, or they might never make it.
Charming resigns himself to stop and unsaddles his horse. The only food he can find are some apples from a nearby tree. His horse eagerly devours them from his hand. Charming pulls the horse to his chest.
"I'm sorry girl." he says quietly. "I know I'm pushing you. I know you're tired. I am too, but Sno's life is on the line. I'll never forgive myself if something happens to her before I can get there... ' he trails off.
He stands motionless for a moment, before slumping to the ground, his Horse nuzzles him softly. Charming feels defeated. As he sits, he thinks back to the happy memories he has shared with Sno. He thinks about their dance, their first kiss. He thinks about her smile and her laugh. A lone tear drips down from his eye, down his cheek and lands onto his cloak.
and in that moment, Charming realizes that he loves Sno, and he resolves that when he arrives in Eleabeth, he is going to ask her to marry him.
Then a royal messenger from the castle rushes into the garden.
"Your Highness, please forgive the intrusion, I have an urgent message from King Daynes of Eleabeth."

Chapter Ten- The Third Day
The King stands at his window. Staring blankly down at Sno’s casket , tears fill his eyes yet again. He closes his eyes and lets them streak down his face. The sun is just coming up; another day is starting. The King feels like all his hopes and dreams are vanquished. . He is unsure of the future. Unsure of himself and the future of his Kingdom.
...
Regina is in her basement study. Through the small window, she sees the sun rising for the third time since Sno fell into her enchanted sleep. She laughs manically to herself.
“Another day is gone.” she says happily to herself. “Soon Sno will never wake up, it will be too late, and then Selena can take the throne. There’s no way that silly young boy, Charming, could possibly love her. When he arrives, he’ll see her body and assume her dead. Sure, he’ll mourn her, as her father does. But he won’t know that a simple kiss will wake her. No one, save myself, knows that. By the time anyone can figure it out, it will be too late.’ Regina cackles once more.
Unbeknown to Regina, Esther is hiding in the hallway. Esther had been following Regina for days trying to prove Regina’s involvement and discover a way to awaken Sno. Upon hearing about the kiss, Esther immediately flees the cellar to inform the King.
Knowing the King’s habits sends Esther to the tower where the he usually plays chess. The King has played chess there every morning since the death of his first wife, Sno’s mother, Abagail. Paranoid that Regina will discover her, Esther continuously gazes over her shoulder, and checks out each window as she passes it. Her heart is racing when she finally arrives at the door.
“Your Majesty?” she asks cautiously, pushing open the door to the tower. The King is not there. Esther enters the room, and closes, the door leaning against it.
“Where could he be..” she asks herself aloud.
Suddenly, a yell echoes from wall to wall, “ESTHER!”
Esther freezes. Her blood grows cold. She recognizes the voice immediately. It belongs to Regina. She bites her lip and runs to the window, where she sees the King weeping at Sno’s casket. The window is too small to climb out, sealed tight, and no way to pry it open, to even call out to the King. She looks around the room, hoping for a place to hide, but sees nothing. There is only a single chess table with two chairs sitting on a rug Esther collapses to her knees, as Regina and 2 guards throw open the door to the tower.
“Esther! We’ve been looking all over for you! The poison used on the Princess was found in your quarters. Now everyone will know it was you that tried to kill her!” she states, malice evident on her face.
Esther’s eyes fill with tears.
“I would never harm my Princess. You did this, Regina. I know you did. I heard you in the cellar. You said… ” Esther stops herself, comprehending what she had just revealed.
“Ah. It was you in the cellar! I thought I felt a presence of someone …unwanted.” Regina laughs. She pauses. then demands loudly,”Guards! Remove this traitor from my presence!”
The Guards take hold of Esther. Though they witnessed the exchange between the two, they dare not disobey the Queen.
…
The King, kneeling in front of Sno’s casket, is still begging her to awaken. Regina arrives silently, startling him him. She speaks forcefully,”Dearest Husband, I have uncovered the identity of the traitor who did this to Sno.” Shock evident on the King’s face.
It was Esther. The poison was discovered in her chambers, while you have been grieving, casting the blame on me, I’ve been seeing out the true culprit.” Regina blurts out.
The King stands and turns to face Regina. He knows in his heart that Esther could never perpetrate such a crime. He had taken Esther in when she was just a teenager. She had nothing, no one to look after her; No place to live. Esther had helped raise Sno since infancy. She wouldn’t hurt the Princess.
“Aren’t you pleased?” Regina asks, shocked at the lack of response from the King.
“Oh yes my Queen. You have done a fine job of getting to the bottom of what has happened. The kingdom is in your debt. Have you questioned Esther about the curse? Did she explain why Sno is still breathing? Has she told you how to break this enchantment?” he asks anxiously.
Regina fixes her face into a convincing frown and looks toward the ground.
“No my King, I’m sorry.”
The King wipes away another tear and then heads towards the castle. He stops suddenly and turns around.
“Regina, where is Esther? I haven’t seen her since ..we found Sno.. like this.” he gestures toward the casket.
Regina presses her lips together and quickly thinks of a lie.
“Why didn’t you hear? She’s fled the Kingdom. She must have known we’d discover her misdeed. I’d wager she sought to escape our wrath.” Regina says quickly.
The King turns slowly, and begins toward the castle again.
“Have you sent anyone out after her?’ he asks hopeful.
“But of course Darling. I want to find her just as badly as you do. We never know when Sno may quit breathing.” she answers
The King bites his lip and walks quickly to the castle, once inside, he hurries to the guard towers.
“My loyal knights.” he begins. “Who has been sent on the search for Esther?” he implores.
The Knights look toward one another. Under their helmets, the King cannot see the questioning looks on their faces. they are making faces. The King asks the same question, and again receives no response. The Knights just stare at him solemnly. Finally, one brave Knight steps forward.
“Your Highness, Please forgive me for not speaking sooner. We were told to put the handmaiden, Esther, in the dungeon. Her Highness the Queen, said you had instructed her to be kept there, after the poison was discovered in her chambers. We were instructed not to speak of her whereabouts to anyone. To do so, would ensure our death.” the Knight says, bowing his head.
The King stands, astonished.
“I did nothing of the sort. Your Queen is a Traitor. By my hand, none of you will meet death in my kingdom. Now bring me to Esther immediately.” he demands, irate.

Once Upon A Time Series. Book One: There Was. Chapter Eleven - The Truth
Chapter Eleven - The Truth
“… I’m so sorry My King, I should have said something sooner, but I was frightened. She said she would kill me next. When I heard that Sno was not dead, I went immediately to and find you. You weren’t in the tower, and she found me there. Then she had the guards place me here” Esther explains tearfully, through the bars of the dungeon cell.
The King nods his head. “Let her out..” he orders the guard at the door of the dungeon.
The guard pulls the keys from his belt and inserts one into the lock. The dungeon door creaks open and Esther stumbles out. The King smiles softly, pulling her into his arms.
“Esther, child, I regret that you were put through this hardship. I’m sorry that the Queen tried to unjustly punish you for something she’s done. I need you to show me where her study is.”
Esther leads the way to the basement study. She pushes open the door and walks inside. The room is dark and gives them the impression its unused. As the King enters, he notices the room appears nearly empty. The only things in the room are a couch, a dresser with a vase of peacock feathers atop the dresser, a mirror and a large tapestry.
“I don’t understand. There was a large black pot. There were books. There were..” Esther stammers.
“So you’re saying my Queen is a witch?” The King demands, horrified.
“My King, I’m not accusing her of being anything. I know she tried to hurt Sno, I don’t know why this room is empty. You must believe me. When Charming arrives, he need only kiss Sno to break the curse.” Esther says breathlessly.
The King’s eyes widen. He isn’t sure what he should believe anymore. He is fairly certain that Regina is behind it all. But without proof, how is he supposed to know the truth. Perplexed, he leads Esther from the cellar study and up the stairs to the highest tower within the castle.
“Esther, I want you to stay in this tower. Remain out of sight. You will be safe here..” he instructs her, as he closes the door.
…
Meanwhile, Charming is nearing the edge of Eleabeth.
“Just a little further..” he says aloud, patting his Horse.
He can tell she is tired, and thirsty. He knows he will need to stop soon. It is nearly sundown, he knows the Kingdom of Aciemma is a full three days ride. He still has another night before he will arrive at the castle. In disgust, he pulls up on the reins, slowing the Horse down.
“Just a little longer, and we will stop and rest.” He promises the Horse. She neighs in objection, and slows to a walk. He sighs bitterly and tugs on the reins, allowing her to stop. He pats her neck and climbs down.
There is a river nearby, and he ambles over to fill up his canteen. The Horse neighs loudly and trots over to the river, lowering her head to drink. Charming starts a fire and sets out his animal skins to be made into a makeshift bed. The stars begin to shine. His stomach growls loudly. In his haste to leave Aciemma, he hasn’t brought nearly enough food for himself.
The river besides him flows steadily and Charming wonders if there might be some fish in it. He fashions a pole and begins to fish, thoughts of Sno go through his mind. A tear runs down his cheek. He fears he may already be too late.
As the stars completely fill the darkening sky, Charming catches small fish. He roasts it over the fire, while silently wishing this night was already over.
The King nods his head. “Let her out..” he orders the guard at the door of the dungeon.
The guard pulls the keys from his belt and inserts one into the lock. The dungeon door creaks open and Esther stumbles out. The King smiles softly, pulling her into his arms.

Once Upon A Time Series. Book 1: There Was. Chapter Twelve - Too Late
Chapter 12 - Too Late
As the sun begins to wake, Charming’s Horse neighs loudly, waking him. He sits up and rubs his eyes, pushing the animal skins hes covered with.
“Guess we getter get a move on girl.” he says aloud patting the Horse, he loads up his animal skins and makes sure the fire is out and then is on his way. He digs his heel into his horses’ flank, forcing her into a run. They don’t stop until reaching the gates of King Daynes castle.
Leaping off his Horse, Charming rushes into the courtyard. He stops dead in his tracks when he sees Sno lying in the glass coffin, motionless.
His heart seems to stop. His breath catches in his chest. He feels a large lump in his throat. He slowly approaches her casket and falls to the ground in anguish, erupting in tears.
“I’m too late..” he sobs “She’s gone.. and I’m too late..” his voice is filled with despair.
He sits up and wipes the tears from his face.
“I have to hold you one last time, I have to say goodbye.” he says drawing closer to the casket.
He gazes lovingly at Sno. She is so beautiful, clutching a bouquet of flowers. He picks her up, gently cradling her motionless body in his arms. Tears fall from his eyes and land on her cheek, she doesn't even flinch. He grimaces and attempts to stifle his sobs. He lifts her face to his for one last kiss.
He watches her, hoping for a miracle, but there’s no change.
Hopelessness overtakes him and, he falls to the ground, clutching Sno’s motionless body.
If I could, I would trade places with you my love…” he whispers to her sweetly. “And if it were truly my choice, I would have you as my Queen..I love you..” he trails off. Tears fall freely from his eyes, grief overtaking him.
“I love you too Charming..” Sno replies sleepily.
Charming jerks up his head and looks at Sno, who gazes at him affectionately. He can’t believe his eyes.
“You’re alright? Sno? You’re alright!” Charming exclaims, smiling wide.”My Sno, I thought I had lost you forever…” he confides.
Sno smiles and brings her hand to cups his face lovingly. He sets her on her feet and she pulls him into a hug.
“You saved me Charming. Without you, I would have been lost forever.” she whispers sweetly.
The king has been informed of Charming’s arrival and rushes from the castle. He is accompanied by Marian. Regina trails slowly behind them. She is bitter, knowing Charming’s arrival only confirms that her plan is thwarted.
“Sno! My daughter! You’re alive! You’re awake! You’re alright!” he says, gathering her into a tight embrace.
Regina speaks softly, faking concern,”Why Sno, we never thought you would awaken..”
“I bet you didn’t..” Sno replies glaring at Regina.
Esther comes running out into the courtyard.
“Sno! Your Majesty Sno! Princess! You’re safe! You’re alive! Charming arrived in time!” she calls loudly as she runs to hug her.
“Yes Esther, I am alright. Everything is as it should be.” Sno says smiling She is unaware Esther was the one who truly saved her.
“Come come! Let’s go inside! We must celebrate! I will make a lamb! Come on everyone!” Esther chimes excitedly.
In the excitement, no one has noticed that Regina has slipped away. She stands, alone, in her study. She peers briefly into her mirror, before looking away.
“It failed! I FAILED!” she yells loudly. She doesn’t fear being overheard. With everyone celebrating upstairs, there is no one present to witness her anger.
She begins to ramble, trying to justify her anger.
Who is to blame for this!? Esther? If Esther had not told the King, he would never have had the foresight to send for Charming. The King? By sending that message, he encouraged the boy to hurry to Sno’s aid. Charming? Without the message, Charming would not have arrived in time!”
“I have to construct a new plan. A plan no one can know about..”

Once Upon A Time Series. Book One. There Was. Chapter Thirteen -
Chapter 13- My Wish, My Hope, My Dream.
Esther quickly prepares a fabulous lamb leg. There are fresh rolls and a roasted jelly sauce. Everyone eats more than their fill. Everyone present in the dining hall is happy and content that Sno is safe. As Esther and Marian begin to clear the table, Charming approaches the King.
“Your Highness, could I have a word with you?” he asks. The King stands and leads Charming out to the balcony.
...
“Sno, I’m so happy that you are alright.” Esther sings coming over to her and pulling her into another tight hug.
“As am I Esther.” Sno says returning the loving embrace. “Do you know where my Father and Charming are going? ” she asks curiosity overtaking her.
Esther smilies, “My dear, I’m sure they are just having a moment together.” she says as she wipes her hands on her apron.
…
That night, Charming stayst in the guest tower. Sno sleeps in her room with guards posted outside her door. The King, fearful that her life may still in danger, is taking no chances. In the morning, everyone gathers for breakfast in the dining hall.
“After the meal, I would like everyone to join me in the garden. I have something I’d like to give to Sno.” The King announces.
Sno glances up from her plate curious. She looks at her Father, but his face is un-telling. Regina doesn’t even try to fake her excitement, and glares at Charming.
When the meal is over, Esther and Marian clear the table while the royal family gather outside. The King and Queen walk together leading the way while, Sno and Charming trail behind.
“Charming, what are you doing? We have to keep up.” Sno laughs, pulling him. But Charming stops.
He pulls her to him, and gazes into her eyes.
My love…Sno, you mean the world to me. You are my heart…my wish…my hope. Will you make me the happiest man alive and consent to be my Queen?”
“Oh! Yes, of course!” she replies, jumping into his arms. “Yes, Charming, I will be your Queen.”
Charming takes her into his arms, lifts her from the ground and kisses her deeply.
By now the King and Queen have returned to their side. Sno looks at them with love and admiration in her eyes. The King begins to applaud enthusiastically. Regina rolls her eyes, but politely begins clapping as well.
The King smiles wide and pulls Sno to him to hug her.
“Dearest Daughter, the gift I have for you is my blessing. I know you will be happy with Charming, and that he will be able to keep you safe. You shall be married tomorrow.”
He then whispers in her ear. “Once you are married, you will leave Eleabeth. It is the only way I can be sure that you are out of harm’s reach.” he says lovingly, tears filling his eyes.

Once Upon A Time Series. Book 1: There Was. Chapter Fourteen - As I Command
Chapter 14- As I command. (PIC HEAVY)
News of Charming and Sno’s wedding spreads quickly. Pigeons are sent rapidly to the surrounding kingdoms. They bear invitations to all the royal couples, requesting their presence to witness this happy occasion. Marian and Esther soon become overwhelmed with organizing the large number of servants who arrive with the nobles.
“Surely his Majesty could have given us more time to organize such a momentous event!” Marian laughs. Esther pulls yet another cake from the oven.
Esther smiles. “His Majesty is very worried about Sno. He wants her out of the Kingdom as soon as possible. The sooner they marry, the sooner she can leave, and the sooner we can all breathe again…” Esther finishes.
…
The King sends for Sno to meet him in the library tower. She arrives quickly, as she always does when her father bade her to him.
“Precious Sno, the ceremony preparations are almost complete. Soon it will be time for you to begin your life as a married woman.” The King says, smiling. “I know that you and Charming will be happy together. I see the love you both carry for each other.”
“Of course, Father. When I think of spending my remaining days with Charming, I’m filled with a joy I cannot describe. I can hardly wait to join in marriage to him.” Sno replies.
She’s been smiling continuously since Charming’s proposal.
...
Meanwhile, up in the reading tower, The King has called a meeting with Sno.
"Dearest Sno, Congratulations on your engagement to Prince Charming my love. I wish you many happy years together." The King says smiling.
"Oh Father, thank you so much. I cannot wait to join in marriage with Charming." Sno replies smiling back.
“Dearest, I called this meeting with you today because I know not what the future holds. I have received word that your dowry has been completed. When you were born, I ordered a castle be built for you. It’s in the Kingdom of Ethireth. Merely one days’ ride from here. I want you and Charming to leave as soon as your reception is concluded.” The King commands.
Sno looks at him wide eyed, “You don’t even want us to wait for morning?” she asks stunned.
“My Dearest Sno, no. Darling, I do not want you stay any longer than absolutely necessary. I want you to leave this Kingdom. I want you safe.” He pauses. “I need to know that you are safe.” he says, tears filling in his eyes.
Sno bites her lip and nods. “Yes Father, I will do as you command.” she nods.
“Dearest, there is one other request I have of you…Your sister, Selena. Please, I want you to take her with you when you go. Raise her as your own. I do not want the evil that your stepmother engages in to corrupt her. Could you give your word that you will do me this service?” The King pleads.
This request takes Sno by surprise. “Oh Father, surely you know not what you ask? You couldn't mean for me to take Selena from you? Assuredly, Regina would wage war on anyone who dares to remove Selena from her. I beg you to reconsider.”
The King hangs his head, “My daughter, this is the only way I will know that both of my precious children are safe from harm. Please? It’s essential you leave immediately after your wedding…and you must take Selena with you.” The King repeats his request; this time though, it is more of a command.
With a heavy heart, Sno nods, cementing her acceptance of her Father’s directive.
...
The day of the wedding arrives. The guests flock to the castle, eager to see the kingdom of Eleabeth and the kingdom of Aciemma come together as one. The many tables are loaded with a great number of sweet treats. They are also crowded with fruits and vegetables, a roasted lamb, a roasted pig, even a turkey has been prepared.
Sno and Charming were unaware there were so many other rulers. Though the service is to be a simple one, no one wanted to miss the opportunity to witness such a special ceremony. The castle grounds are soon full.
…
In Sno’s bedchamber, Esther helps Sno into her bridal dress. It’s the dress that Sno’s mother wore at her own wedding. Gazing upon it brings tears to Esther’s eyes. The thought of Sno’s mother in the gown brings that special day to the front of her mind.
“Sweet Highness, I was but a teenager when I helped your mother into this gown.” Esther begins, “She wore it when she was given into marriage to your Father. I know she would be honored that you chose to wear it for your own wedding.” Esther squeaks, wiping away a tear.
Sno is overcome with emotion, and pulls Esther into a hug.
“Esther, you have always been so kind to me. You’ve remained in my life, almost as a…mother…to me. You’re so caring, understanding, helpful, and patient. Thank you for this.” she says, smiling softly.
Esther smiles back.
“It has been my sincere pleasure to watch you grow, Child.”
“Esther, I do have one favor to ask of you. Please, do not tell Regina about the dress. I fear if she knew, her anger would overtake this glorious day” Sno says quietly.
Esther bows her head. “To the grave will I take this secret.” she promises.
Esther then takes her leave. Sno stands before the mirror
As she stands there, she tries to envision what her Mother may have felt on her own wedding day. Was her mother as nervous as Sno was? Was she expected to immediately leave her home for an unknown castle? Sno takes a minute to look around her room. Memories fill her before the thought of Charming casts aside all doubts. She imagines her mother felt the same about Sno’s father.
“I’ll have to ask Father what it was like.. ” she says aloud smiling to herself.
“Princess?” a knock on the door jolts her back to reality. The door opens. Esther peeks her head in.
“Princess, it is time. Are you ready?”
Sno nods and allows herself to be led from her room.
