Default Game Guide: Death
How does one die in The Sims 2? What are all the methods of death, including the ones that come with EPs? What death types can each life stage have? What's the quickest way to kill off a sim? What's the most entertaining? What are the ghost colours, and what do ghosts in different colours do once dead? How do you stop ghosts from haunting and get rid of them entirely? How about move gravestones to a community lot?

Please post your info here! You may post new tips, links to old threads that contain lots of good information, etc.

It will be added to this game guide, with credit to the original poster:

In the base game, there are 9 different ways for a sim to die.

OLD AGE
The most simple is for an elder sim to die of old age. This happens naturally when an elderly sim reaches the end of his life. There is no escaping death and for sims that live normal, happy lives this is how they will go. The grim reaper arrives telling your sim time is up before the sim dissapears forever, leaving a gravestone where he died.

DROWNING
Another way for sims to die is by drowning. Children and up can drown when they are swimming in a pool when mysterious, the ladder goes missing. They eventually get tired and after a lot of whining, they drown. Without the ladder, the sim can't get out so they just stay there in the pool, swimming around.

ELECTROCUTION
Electrocution is another death but only for teens and up. This can happen when a sim is fixing an electrical item like a computer or TV. If the sim's moods are low and they get electrocuted, they die.

BURNING
Burning is a traditional yet simple way to kill teens, adults and elders. Burning sims was a favourite in sims 1 and still is in sims 2. Starting a fire can be deadly, and if a sim stands too close, they may catch fire. While on fire, a sim's moods will constantly drop rapidly and if they get too low, the sim dies.

STARVATION
A time-consuming way to kill teens and up is starvation. It is simple but takes a long time to do. Simply keep a sim away from food either by giving them no access to a fridge or any other source of food or by locking them in a room so they can't escape. After a long time, a sim's hunger motive will hit the bottom and they will die.

DEATH BY SATELLITE
A very tricky way to kill a sim is death by satellite. This is a way fro teens and up to die while doing the Watch Cloud or Stargaze interactions outside. While they are laying outdoors, there is a very small random chance that they will be crushed by a falling satellite. When it does, all that is left behind is the satellite and a pile of ash. The satellite can be sold in but mode for around $2000 which isn't bad.

DEATH BY FLIES
Death by flies is another way to kill sims off teens and up. If a lot is so messy with so many dirty objects, especailly things like plates with flies around them, all the flies could merge into one big swarm which can surround a sim and kill them. Each time a sim steps over a fly-infested object there is a chance they will die by flies.

DISEASE
Disease is a way to kill sims child and up. When they catch a disease, if they aren't cured in a certain ammount of time a sim may get too ill and die, after coughing and collapsing.

SCARED TO DEATH
If you have a ghost on the lot, sims can be scared to death. Teen and up, being scared by a ghost causes a serious drop to all moods and if 3 needs fall too low, a sim could die of the shock.

In EP1 (University)we were given a new way to kill sims off.

COWPLANT
If a sim on the Natrual Scientist career reaches level 6, they unlock a career reward object- the cowplant! This living plant gets hungry, just like sims. If left un fed for too long, it decides it has to catch its own dinner. The cow plant tricks a sim by using bait- a piece of cake on its tongue. Sims who get tricked attempt to grab the slice of cake, but sadly, get eaten by the cowplant. Its not all bad news though, the cowplant's meal will go right to its udders which can be milked and the milk produced can be drunk to give a sim and extra few days to their life. Its not all bad getting sims eaten then.

EP2 (Nightlife) brought in the supernatural beings known as vampires. They had an extra way they could die.

DEATH BY SUNLIGHT
If a vampire is outside or near a window during the day, their motives will drop rapidly as they burn in the sunlight. If they are left out too long, they will die.

In EP5 (Seasons) we were given 4 new ways for sims to die!

HIT BY LIGHTNING
If a sim is outside during a rain storm and is in water (stood in a puddle, in a hot tub, pool, etc) there is a chance that they will be hit by lightning. This can kill teens and above by lowering most needs too low for a sim to survive.

HIT BY HAIL
In the middle of a hail storm, if a sim is stood outside there is a small random chance that they will be hit by big chunks of hail and die. This is again only for teens and up and only happens in heavy hail storms.

FREEZE TO DEATH
If a sim's temperature drops to -100 they will freeze. While frozen, their motives still drop and they can't do anything. If they are frozen for too long, they get hungry and end up dying. This is only for teens and up since cold children and toddlers get taken away by the social worker before they can freeze.

HEATSTROKE
This is pretty much the same as freezing to death but the other way round. If a sim gets too hot (+100 temperature) they will pass out. While on the floor, their motives still drop and if they are out long enough, they will die. A way to prevent teens and up from dying from heatstroke is to hope for rain or to cool the down by splashing water on them.

I think that the quickest way to kill sims off is BURNING as it doesn't take too long to start a fire and then it's rather easy getting a sim to walk near to the fire and eventually catch fire. Don't have a fire alarm so the fire brigade don't arrive and you'l easily have your sim/s dead in no time!

The most entertaining death is probably the COWPLANT. The animations for it are very fun to watch and it is simple. Its a great way to kill sims off, but you have to watch out because sims will sometimes try and grab the slice of cake autonomously.

You can also download the scissors from the Exchange and get "Death by Scissors" from playing with the "run with scissors" option.

I am Ghost. My husband is sidneydoj. I post, he downloads, and I wanted to keep my post count.

In OFB

There is death by the "Rally Forth" action. As the rally forth action lowers a sim's needs, using this interation too much can have deadly consequences. If killed this way, the ghost haunts the lot with a loudspeaker in their hands. Teens and above for this one.

Sims can also get stuck by lighting in OFB if they are using the bad kite and get electrocuted by a broken servo. The poisonous snapdragons (another bad result from the crafting stations) can also fatally lower a sims needs.

The simplest way to stop a ghost from haunting your sims lots at night is to delete the gravestone/urn. If you don't want to part with the grave though, you could always place it in one of your living sim's inventories. This stops the ghost haunting your sims but keeps the grave. Just make sure you take the grave out of the inventory of the sim with it before they die or its gone forever.

I always create a 'cemetery' lot in my neighborhood, and then move urns/graves there. That way, I build up a kind of 'story' with the graves as they fill in the area slowly, and I can -- over time -- turn it into a beautiful, serene park that knowledge sims with their see a ghost wants will love to go dating in.

In OFB I think (please correct me if I'm wrong) you can die if an elevator crashes. I'm not sure what that would be called, "death by elevator" maybe...

Edit: Also, when a sim dies by drowning their ghost will leave puddles when they come back to haunt.
And those poor sims who starve to death can sometimes go and take stuff from the fridge.

has anybody tried a graveyard yet?

I've made a few graveyards. Once you've built your community graveyard, you can either click on the gravestone and chose "move this grave" (or "move all graves") then pick where you want it sent, or you can load it into a sims backpack, send them to the community graveyard and have them place it there themselves.

If you're playing the Legacy challenge, and you rely on your ghosts being "free roaming" ghosts, meaning that they aren't restricted in any way, then here's another tip for keeping them out of your house. The ghosts will be drawn to their old beds first and foremost. Put the beds in storage somewhere near your cemetary/mausoleum. I have mine over the garage, while the family cemetary is behind the garage. Others build a two story mausoleum, with bed storage on the top. The ghosts head there first, check on the bed, then roam only in the area where the beds are. Mine never enter my house because they're always roaming around the beds, which are above the garage. Deleting the last bed they slept in (pre-death), makes them angry and causes them to haunt more. So does moving their gravestone.

And easy way to get Death by Flies: Corridor off an area that is 1 tile x 20 tiles. Place a chair at one end, and a counter at the other. Then have your Sim order a pizza, and place it on the counter. When they do that, block them in the area (remove door/gate). Instruct your sim to clean up the pizza. With nowhere to go, they'll drop the pizza (now a pile of trash) on the ground. Continue to instruct them to do this until you have all the tiles filled with trash. Then instruct your sim to sit and wait. When the trash turns green and the flies appear, instruct your sim to walk from one end to the other. They'll have to walk thru the trash to do this. Sometimes it takes a stroll or two, but by the end of the walk, they should be eaten by flies. Don't forget to clean up or you'll have roaches. Ick.

The best way to learn how to do all the deaths, is to read PeeWee's Death Tutorial.

PLATINUM DEATH

If a sim dies of Old Age while in Platinum Aspiration, the Grim Reaper will show up wearing a bright pink flower lei and accompanied by two dancing Hula Zombies, presents the dying sim with a mixed drink and a suitcase, and escorts them away as if they've won a free trip to a tropical paradise. The gravestone/urn produced by this death is white with gold trim and an embossed golden symbol of the deceased sim's Aspiration (Knowledge, Romance, etc.), referred to as the "platinum grave". This death is frequently awarded bonus points in challenges like the Legacy Challenge.

EP 5

Sims who overheat may also spontaneously combust, leading to death by fire. Sims who die by lightning have essentially been electrocuted.

Contemplating making Golden Sun stuff for TS2.

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER DEATH?
Left object: Fly-eaten sims turns to ash (dust). A sattelite crash leaves the sattelite, etc.etc.

Urn Appearance: A regular urn appears if the sim did not die by Old Age. An Old Age death may cause an appearance of a platinum grave if the dead sim is in Platinum (assured appearance of platinum grave) or Gold (chanced appearance of platinum grave). You can still get a platinum grave even if you're under grilled cheese aspiration (EP 2 only)

Insurance: Family members and friends gets a pile of money. (Even if they are in another subhood)

Mourning period: Sims close to the dead will mourn and cry for some time.

Ghost Appearance: Depending on its type of death, ghosts will have different colors and abilities. Old Age death sims are attracted to their beds and will spook frequently if you lost it, Rally Forth death sims wakes up other with a megaphone, and drowned sims will leave HELL lots of puddles everywhere they go.

P.S. Graveyards are cool. If you wish to make it more functional, add a park. I based that on a real-life area.

EDIT: Thanks to: yamikuronue for the better word for "other neighborhood"

The blue ghost is annoying. I had a female sim die this way, and the WHOLE yard was filled with puddles and weeds every night, and the ghost made poor grandma wet herself... The blue ghost is NOT fun at all. :P

Isn't that a girl's name?

Well, you DID drown her, Baby Ronno. That's why Drowned ghosts have such a negative appearance efffect

Are you sure they get money if they're in another neighborhood and not just if they're in another subhood?

I didn't think sims could meet people in other neighbourhoods, properly anyway. Dillitru probably meant subhood.

I have a question. If a sim dies in platinum mode, do they still haunt around their old bed, turn on TVs move objects around or do they do float around house? Basically I'm asking is there such thing as good hauntings instead of scaring sims(I ask b/c i dont like killing sims to find out)
