This user has the following games installed:

Sims 2, University, Nightlife, Open for Business, Pets, Seasons, Bon Voyage
Default Any way to clean install Sims2Pack files for Mac? MacUnpac does not work
Hey! I have a similar problem to many people in that i can't download some Sims2Pack files because "this content requires expansion pack data that is not installed" (even though I have all the EPs required). I know for Windows you can use the Clean Installer, and people say the alternative for Mac is MacUnpac. Thing is, the MacUnpac doesn't work - at least for me. Upon use all it does is ask for me to input the download and lot catalog paths, restart once I do, and upon restarting the download and lot catalog paths are cleared. Rinse and repeat. Once, I managed to bypass this and actually upload my Sims2Pack file to Mac Unpac and it still didn't work. Nothing happened.
So I'm wondering, is there any way i can clean install/unpack Sims2Pack files for Mac? Or is it now just a case of hoping creators will convert the Sims2Pack file to an archive file? Or, is there any way I can bypass "this content requires expansion pack data that is not installed"? Thanks!

If you happen to have access to a PC, all you'd need to do was to install the Clean Installer on it, and then open and install the files to a folder you selected. Those installed files (all ".package" files) should work for the Mac.

One alternative could be to use some sort of emulator that lets you run a version of Windows for things like this.

There is no Clean Install for Macs, your options on Your Mac are try with the Standard Installer or try with Mac UnPac, note sometimes Mac Upac does work...It sort of depends. Note if you get the message that says "this content requires expansion pack data that is not installed" you can probably figure that the message is accurate...Even if you think that you have all of the EPs required you most likely do not in fact have all of the EPs required. The Standard Installer does work with the Sims2Pack files that are supported by Macs most of the time, in the cases where the Standard Installer fails and gives you that message, you can try Mac UnPac, but Mac UnPac will likely fail too.

I use an iMac, what I do is try using Mac UnPac first because it does open some Sims2Pack files and if it does then it will do a better job than the Standard Installer does as it does not munge the name of the file like the Standard Installer does. If you can't get Mac UnPac to do the thing, then try the Standard Installer, but first have all of your content in sub folders and then if the installer does install the file it will be loose in the Downloads folder and thus easy to find and rename.

If you have tried both it is likely that it just won't work on a Mac, that message is accurate most of the time.

^ You get that message sometimes with the default installer, too. Probably if the item is made with an EP (installed) you don't have. This is a problem for lots (you should never use a lot made with AL or M&G in a game that doesn't have them, for instance), but unless the sim actually require an item from a particular EP, they should work fine.

The default installer is a bit borked (renames files, adds ".package" x several, occasionally doesn't properly install lots, etc.), which is why people are encouraged to use the Clean Installer on a PC.

I have never tried to install a Sim, doubt that one can if the Sim was made with an EP that is not included on Macs. I have only installed one Lot {it was the Apple Store...I just could not resist} I did not have any problems with that though. Most recently it was a few walls that had adult murals that I wanted. They were a bit of a pain, but I managed them...Most of them worked with Mac UnPac. The default installer defiinitely renames files, since I have hardly ever tried to install a lot {just one} I don't have much to say about the problem installing lots, other than I am sure that simmer22 is correct about the issue. Too bad there is no Clean Installer on Macs, but I am not going to switch. I rarely try to use the default installer, and I usually don't need to as I don't install lots and I don't install Sims...as I create my own Lots and I create my own Sims.

I won't use Clean Installer, I prefer to open Sims2Pack files with SimPE and extract the bits I want.

If you can open/edit files in a hex editor (I've no idea what's available for a Mac) you can alter the EP requirements for Sims2Pack files
You'll find the EP requirements in the file's header under <GameVersion>, followed by <CodeVersion>
Sims2Pack files use the same complicated EP definitions as Story Telling files

2141707388.153.1-Basegame
2141707388.182.1-University (EP1)
2141707388.222.1-Nightlife (EP2)
2141707388.272.1-Open For Business (EP3)
2141707388.1.5---Family Fun (SP1)
2141707388.1.6---Glamour Life (SP2)
2141707388.1.7---Pets (EP4)
2141707388.1.8---Seasons (EP5)
2141707388.1.9---Celebration! Stuff (SP4)
2141707388.1.10--H&M® Fashion (SP5)
2141707388.1.11--Bon Voyage (EP6)
2141707388.1.12--Teen Style (SP6)
2141707388.1.13--(Old) Store Edition
2141707388.1.14--FreeTime (EP7)
2141707388.1.15--Kitchen & Bath (SP7)
2141707388.1.16--IKEA® Home (SP8)
2141707388.1.17--Apartment Life (EP8)
2141707388.1.18--Mansions (EP9)
2141707388.1.32--(New) Store Edition

Code Version shouldn't be higher than your Highest EP, which for Bon Voyage is 10

Generally you shouldn't delete anything in a hex editor as that destroys the file's table but you can change every EP required that you don't have to one that you do have.
The following example enabled a Sims2Pack created for all EPs up to (New) Store Edition to be opened by PackageInstaller where Bon Voyage is the highest EP installed
Original
<GameVersion>2141707388.153.1,2141707388.182.1,2141707388.222.1,2141707388.272.1,2141707388.1.5,2141707388.1.6,2141707388.1.7,2141707388.1.8,
2141707388.1.9,2141707388.1.10,2141707388.1.11,2141707388.1.12,2141707388.1.14,2141707388.1.15,2141707388.1.16,2141707388.1.17,2141707388.1.18,2141707388.1.32</GameVersion>
<CodeVersion>31</CodeVersion>

After editing
<GameVersion>2141707388.153.1,2141707388.182.1,2141707388.222.1,2141707388.272.1,2141707388.1.5,2141707388.1.6,2141707388.1.7,2141707388.1.8,
2141707388.1.9,2141707388.1.10,2141707388.1.11,2141707388.1.11,2141707388.1.11,2141707388.1.11,2141707388.1.11,2141707388.1.11,2141707388.1.11,2141707388.1.11</GameVersion>
<CodeVersion>10</CodeVersion>

As an aside these complicated EP values translate to the following:-
[2141707388 = 0x7FA7DC7C = UIText].[Text list Instance].[Line number (where the first line is 1)]
So for BaseGame the first line (line 0) in Text list 153 (0x0099) in UIText.package is The Sims 2.
The fifth line (line 4) in Text list 1 (0x0001) in UIText.package is The Sims 2 Family Fun Stuff. Etc.

Hi Chris! I am trying to edit via a Hex Editor, and see my GameVersion, but I dont see CodeVersion. Have you ever seen that before?

What I've found from using MacUnpac is that the path preferences may not stick but the files are still getting extracted to ...somewhere. In my case, I've found them at Computer > [Hard Drive name]. From there, I move them where they should be.
